Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> will inaugurate the strategically important all-weather Atal Tunnel, the world's longest highway tunnel, at Rohtang in <keyword id="6358126" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Himachal-Pradesh">Himachal Pradesh</keyword> on Saturday. The function will be held at 10 am, said a statement from the Prime Minister's Office. The Atal Tunnel, which reduces the distance between Manali and Leh by 46 kms and the travel time by four to five hours, is a 9.02-km-long tunnel. It connects Manali to Lahaul-Spiti valley throughout the year. Earlier the valley was cut off for about six months each year owing to heavy snowfall. The tunnel is built with ultra-modern specifications in the Pir Panjal range of Himalayas at an altitude of 3,000 metres (10,000 feet) above Mean Sea Level (MSL). The South Portal (SP) of Atal Tunnel is located at a distance of 25 km from Manali at an altitude of 3,060 metres, while the North Portal (NP) of the tunnel is located near village Teling, Sissu, in Lahaul Valley at an altitude of 3,071 metres. It is a horseshoe-shaped, single tube double lane tunnel with a roadway of eight metres. It has an overhead clearance of 5.525 metres. It is 10.5-metre wide and has a 3.6 x 2.25 metres fire proof emergency egress tunnel built into the main tunnel itself. Atal Tunnel has been designed for traffic density of 3,000 cars per day and 1,500 trucks per day with a maximum speed of 80 km per hour. It has state-of-the-art electromechanical systems including semi transverse ventilation system, SCADA-controlled firefighting, illumination and monitoring system. The historic decision to construct a strategic tunnel below the Rohtang Pass was taken on June 3, 2000 when late Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the Prime Minister. The foundation stone for the access road to the South Portal of the tunnel was laid on May 26, 2002. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) worked relentlessly to overcome major geological, terrain and weather challenges that included the most difficult stretch of the 587-metre Seri Nalah Fault Zone. The breakthrough from both ends was achieved on October 15, 2017. The Union Cabinet, under chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on December 24 last year decided to name the <keyword id="166207" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rohtang-tunnel">Rohtang Tunnel</keyword> as Atal Tunnel to honour the contribution made by former Prime Minister Vajpayee. After attending the inauguration function of the Atal Tunnel at the South Portal, Manali, Prime Minister Modi will be participating in public functions at Sissu in Lahaul-Spiti and at Solang Valley.

The CMO said that all the 17 jawans had come to Kinnaur in an Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) vehicle from Jammu and were already quarantined. Earlier on Wednesday, ITBP's Reckong Peo Battalion in Kinnaur district was sealed after declaring the area as cantonment zone after five ITBP jawans had tested positive, Kalpa sub-divisional magistrate Avaninder Sharma said. In Shimla, six ITBP jawans of 43rd Battalion in Jeori of Rampur tehsil also tested positive on Thursday, Rampur sub-divisional magistrate Narendra Chauhan said. The jawans, who had recently returned to Rampur after leave, were placed under quarantine in SJVN premises, he added. You can also venture further to Udaipur (3 hours from Manali), a town on Chandrabhaga River bank in Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh. (Eds: Updating figure) Shimla, Jul 5 () Seventeen more people including an Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) jawan tested positive for COVID-19 in Himachal Pradesh on Sunday, pushing the state's tally of infected cases to 1,064. Seven of the fresh cases were reported from Una, five from Kangra, two each from Solan and Kullu and one from Mandi district, Additional Chief Secretary (Health) R D Dhiman said. In Kullu, two of the fresh cases included a 33-year-old Chandigarh-returned ITBP jawan and a 34-year-old Bhutnar woman, who returned from Rajasthan, Superintendent of Police Gaurav Singh said. The SP said the ITBP jawan had returned from Chandigarh on June 24 and was quarantined. With this, 30 ITBP jawans, 23 in Kinnaur, six in Shimla and one in Kullu district, have tested positive for the disease in the state this month so far. All these ITBP jawans were asked to return to their battalions as their leaves had been cancelled after the violent physical clashes between Indian and Chinese troops in Galwan Valley in Ladakh on June 15. In Kangra, three of the five new patients are women while two are men, Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Prajapati said. The three of five new patients had recently returned from Mumbai, Delhi and Ludhiana respectively, while two had come in contacts of a COVID-19 patient, he added. A 61-year-old Mumbai-returned man from Rajot village in Baijnath tehsil, a 46-year-old Delhi-returned woman from Spail village in Jawali tehsil and a 25-year-old Ludhiana-returned woman from Bilaspur village in Dehra tehsil tested positive for COVID-19, he added. The DC said a 52-year-old man and his 25-year-old daughter from Kehrian village in Jawali tehsil also tested positive. They had come in contact of a COVID-19 patient, he added. In Mandi, a 34-year-old man from Kharoh village in Sarkaghat tehsil, who had returned from West Bengal, tested positive for the novel coronavirus, a district official said. He was asymptomatic and kept in home-quarantine, he added. Twenty-eight more patients -- eight each from Hamirpur and Solan, seven from Kangra, three from Bilaspur and one each from Mandi and Una -- recovered from the infection, ACS R D Dhiman said. A total of 10 people have died of the viral infection so far in the state. The number of active COVID-19 cases in the state stands at 315. As many as 724 people have recovered from the infection so far, while 13 have migrated out of the state, Dhiman said.
