Picking low unit mutual schemes doesn't always mean higher returns While investing in mutual funds, investors tend to think mutual fund schemes with low net asset value (NAV) are more attractive and may give higher returns. NAV represents a MF fund’s unit price at which investors buy fund shares from MF houses and sell them. The NAV of a fund is basically like the share price of a company. The story starts when one has to choose among thousands of schemes. To put it straight, if you were to pick up ones of these mutual funds on the basis of NAV which one will you pick: A) NAV - ₹100 B) NAV - ₹10 Gill explains how the correct answer is neither. “Let’s say you invest ₹10,000 in both of these funds then in fund A you will get 100 units and fund B you will get 1,000 units. After one year both funds give a return of 10% and your holding value in both the funds will be ₹11,000. This means a lower NAV does mean more units but it doesn't mean more returns.” <div type="javascript" title="Custom" contenttype="Video"><cdata><![CDATA[ ]]></cdata></div> NAV is total assets managed by the company divided by total number of units. So more units means lower the NAV and fewer units, higher the NAV. A fund may have a low NAV if it is not too old or could be because of the poor performance of the market in the past. Here’s why lower unit price of a mutual fund doesn't mean higher returns

As India has emerged as the one of the fastest growing civil aviation markets of the world, it is time that the government take steps to make the aviation sector globally competitive beginning with reduction on its tax structure, the head of a low-cost airline has said. Ajay Singh, Chairman and Managing Director, <keyword id="6358032" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="SpiceJet">SpiceJet</keyword>, in an interview to rued that the civil aviation sector in India is highly taxed and identified it as one of the major stumbling blocks in making it globally competitive. "I think lowering of taxes and looking at aviation in a holistic sense as a job creator, as something that connects India to itself and to the world. It's important that we take a more holistic approach to aviation," he said Singh was in Washington DC last week as part of a business delegation that accompanied Union Finance Minister <keyword id="129243" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nirmala-Sitharaman">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> who was here to attend the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. "What we have been asking for a very long time now is that the government should make Indian aviation competitive with its peers around the world. We should make sure that our costs are in line with our peers around the world," he said. India, Singh said, is the only country which taxes aviation fuel at an average of about 35 per cent while no other significant aviation country in the world taxes fuel at all. As such Indian carriers are paying a much higher cost of operation and, therefore, they are not competitive with others. That is one big issue, he said. "The second big issue is on the maintenance and repair operations. In maintenance and repair operations as well, we pay a GST of 18 per cent," he added. MROs (Maintenance, Repair, Overhaul) is one space where India can be doing exceedingly well, Singh said. "We can be repairing our own aircraft. We have the engineering skills. We have the people in India to do this. We have the infrastructure to do it. We have the skills. And despite that a lot of repair and overall active activity actually happens overseas because of the high tax in India," he said. "As such, it is important to understand that if one imposes such high taxes, then nobody gets any work done and therefore there is no revenue. And when there is no revenue, there's no tax either, he observed. "So you have to moderate taxes. India can be a huge global base for repair and overall not only for the airlines within India, but for for airlines outside India. So that's a space that we certainly need to look at," Singh said. He asserted that it is also important that India should build its own international hubs like Dubai, <keyword id="63248" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Abu-Dhabi">Abu Dhabi</keyword>, Doha, Singapore and Bangkok and stop exporting traffic into these hubs and allowing them to distribute traffic around the word. "It's important for a large country like India to have people go directly from Delhi, Bombay, Bangalore and <keyword id="6354552" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="hyderabad">Hyderabad</keyword> to Europe and the US and the far east. So, we need to ensure that a policy action is taken on that front," Singh said. He said India has to start looking at the aviation sector in a holistic sense and try and make sure that the system does not make it burdensome to operate the businesses. "We have to ensure that aviation, the airlines themselves succeed," he said. Of the BRICS countries, Singh said India remains the only one where there is no major assembly facility of either Boeing or Airbus. That's a space that the government definitely needs to work on, he said. Observing that India is a very large market, he said there is need to encourage people to come and start build something within India. "I think the on engine repair for example, again, we need to ensure that a larger engine makers like CFM or Pratt and or Rolls Royce, start by setting up at least the maintenance and repair facilities within India," Singh said. In the aviation sector, a lot is possible and a lot can be done especially if it is small planes, helicopters, aircraft components, etc, he said. "But I think we have to work as one team India. The corporate sector as well as the government have to work aggressively with foreign companies that own the technology to encourage them to build in India," Singh said. LKJ AQS AQS

Coal India Four trade unions have served a one-day strike notice to the company and its arms on November 26; the company informed investors. Efforts would be made to avert the strike and conciliatory process is going on, it said, without giving out further details. Coal India State-run Coal India Ltd on Wednesday reported a 16 per cent fall in its consolidated net profit to ₹2,951 crore in the second quarter ending September 30. The miner had posted a net profit of ₹3,523 crore in the year-ago period. Although, the company’s revenue from sales was at ₹19,484 crore during the quarter under review as against ₹18,986 crore in the year-ago period. The shares of Coal India ended 1% higher on Wednesday. Power Grid State-owned Power Grid posted an over 20% rise in consolidated net profit to ₹3,094.10 crore in the September quarter, mainly due to higher revenues. Total income during the period under review rose to ₹9,831 crore from ₹9,260.46 crore in the same period a year ago. The shares of Power Grid ended 2.14% higher on Wednesday. Apollo Hospitals Corporate hospital major Apollo Hospitals is set to acquire the remaining 50% stake in Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals held by Gleneagles Development PTE Ltd, Singapore for ₹410 billion. Consequent to this development, Apollo Gleneagles would become a 100% wholly-owned subsidiary of the city-based Apollo Hospitals. The shares of Apollo Hospitals ended 8% higher on Wednesday. PVR Limited PVR Limited reported a net loss of ₹225.6 crore for the quarter ended June 30. The company’s overall revenue was down 98.6% to ₹12.7 crore compared to the same period last year. The shares of PVR Limited closed 5% higher yesterday. Indiabulls Housing Finance Indiabulls Housing Finance raised about ₹1,205 crore over the last few days through its qualified institutional placement (QIP) and partial stake sale in UK-based OakNorth Bank Ltd. The non-banking finance company (NBFC) has raised ₹682.87 crore through the QIP and ₹522 crore from the partial stake sale. The shares of Indiabulls Housing Finance closed 5% higher on Monday. Raymond Limited Apparel maker Raymond reported a net loss of ₹247.6 crore compared to last year loss of ₹12.2 crore. The company’s consolidated revenue declined by 88.6% to ₹163.2 crore. The shares of Raymond Limited closed 3% higher on Monday. SAIL: Steel Authority of India Steel Authority of India reported a net loss of ₹1,226.5 crore for the quarter ended June 30. The company’s overall revenue was down 38.8% to ₹ 9,067.5 crore compared to the same period last year. The shares of SAIL closed 2% higher yesterday. Ashok Leyland Hinduja Group-owned Ashok Leyland launched a new light commercial vehicle (LCV) yesterday. Chairman Dheeraj Hinduja said the new LCV comes with the right and left-hand drive options, enabling the company to look at international markets. While Jet fuel prices are at a five-year low, <keyword id="44023" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="airlines">Airlines</keyword> say prices have already hit rock bottom with the lean July-September travel season. They are not slashing fares any further. 
 
"Domestic fares are up to 20% lower than same time last year. Airlines are very aggressive with promotional offers to drive up occupancy levels in the lean travel season. Due to the low fares, we are again witnessing a resurgent domestic passenger growth", Sharat Dhall, President, Yatra told ET. 
 The main reasons for these low fares in the lean season are the addition of new competition like <keyword id="2467342" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vistara">Vistara</keyword> and AirAsia India. There is also <keyword id="6358032" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SpiceJet">SpiceJet</keyword> adding new planes to its existing fleet. 
 A senior official of a leading Indian airline said, "<keyword id="6375796" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="airfares">Airfares</keyword> are very low these days. Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Bengaluru one-way tickets are coming for Rs 3,400 and Rs 4,000-5,000, respectively. The current low oil prices will help airlines reduce their losses. Also, the low fuel price is a cushion for airlines against low aircraft occupancy that is recorded in lean travel months."

Airlines won’t cut fare even as fuel prices at 5-year low

<keyword id="6358032" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SpiceJet">SpiceJet</keyword>, the low-cost airline headquartered in Gurgaon, is minting money because of low fuel prices. It announced profits of Rs 238 crore during the third quarter of the current fiscal year. 
 
This is special for the company even more, because last year, in the same period, the airline had reported losses of Rs 275 crore. 
 
The company has also reported about 35% decline in the costs during the third quarter as compared to Q3 last year, the financial turmoil also led to its closure for a day during last December. 
Even though it has lower capacity, the airline registered about 11% increase in revenues during the third quarter. 
 
IndiGo too announced its third quarter results yesterday, where in it reported a net profit of Rs 657.3 crore, as compared to Rs 531.6 crore last year.

SpiceJet registers a profit of Rs 238 crore in Q3

The beleaguered carrier, <keyword id="6358032" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SpiceJet">Spicejet</keyword>’s is back with delightful offers for the air travellers. And this has resulted in a spurt of flight bookings on online travel portal. 
	 
	“With flight ticket prices lesser than train fares from SpiceJet, this is by far the best deal for travellers this year. SpiceJet is looking to aggressively regain market share and we have seen their bookings on our website grow exponentially by over 300%,” said Sharat Dhall, president of Yatra.com. 
	 
	He further added, “Sectors like Goa, Kerala, Pune and Hyderabad as well as intra-metro routes have seen the most bookings. We expect SpiceJet bookings to continue to grow in the next couple of days and anticipate other airlines to follow suit with offers of their own.” 
	 
	The carrier, which went through a serious financial crisis by the end of 2014, has once again come up with flash sale, this time selling the tickets lower than the railways. Spicejet is now offering tickets at Rs 599. 
	 
	However, questions are being raised about the feasibility of the flash sale especially at a time when the airline is going through a financial crunch. 
	 “It is misconception to say that discounted prices are not a feasible idea for the airline. Low-cost carriers across the globe come out with such offers and they are still in existence. According to <keyword id="64233" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IATA">IATA</keyword>, Indian domestic market grew 6% in July year-over-year and we feel that market stimulation efforts led by us had some contribution toward this growth,” a SpiceJet spokesperson told BI India in an email response a while back. Reiterating a similar sentiment, aviation expert Amber Dubey noted that <keyword id="961660" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="flash-sales">flash sales</keyword> of air tickets actually help a carrier recover the cost incurred on seats that generally fly empty on a route. 
	 
	“Flash sales of air tickets are a good way to stimulate buying, bring in non-flyers and sell unsold seats, which are anyways likely to remain unsold in non-peak hour flights. The cost structure of airlines is mostly of a fixed nature–fuel wages, airport charges, aircraft lease and maintenance among others. The incremental cash that flash sales generate helps defray part of the fixed cost. Flying an empty seat is the biggest pain-point for an airline”, added Dubey. 
	 
	BI India feels that while it may be an attractive proposition for the air passengers, it would be interesting to see which Indian carriers follow suit and offer such heavy discounts on their tickets.

This may sound little bizarre but it is true. Airfares were cheapest this year in 2015 as compared to last three years. 
 
As per airlines and travel firms, ticket prices were 40 per cent cheaper when compared to past three years. 
 "The reason for this is primarily two - the decline in fuel costs being passed on to passengers and the advent of new carriers which has led to an increase of supply in airline seats as well as competition," Amit Taneja, chief revenue officer at <keyword id="132652" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cleartrip">Cleartrip</keyword> told ET. 
 
According to the Cleartrip survey, average annual ticket prices for the current financial year ranged between Rs 5,857 and Rs 4,018. 
 
In past few years, airliners have been aggressively rolling out deals to attract fliers. According to a survey by GoEuro, Indian local ticket prices as a fraction of what is charged in Finland, Switzerland, Austria and Estonia, apart from much-developed markets such as the US and UK. 
 From <keyword id="6358032" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SpiceJet">SpiceJet</keyword> to <keyword id="2467342" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vistara">Vistara</keyword>, airlines changed tracks to gain more consumers and fill their flights. 
 
Another factor why airlines lowered prices was cost of jet fuel. The per kilolitre rate at Delhi airport, India's busiest, is currently 26 per cent cheaper than December last year, 40 per cent cheaper than 2013 and 34 per cent cheaper than 2012.

It will give <keyword id="6359180" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sia" source="Orion">SIA</keyword> a 25.1 per cent stake in the enlarged Air India group following its takeover by Tata and merger with <keyword id="2468721" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="vistara-airlines" source="Orion">Vistara Airlines</keyword>. The November 2022 deal between Singapore Airlines and Tata Sons to further inject USD 267 million into Air India is one of the key strategic initiatives for future growth mentioned in the quarterly financial report. This agreement is still subject to regulatory approval. SIA in the statement said, "The merged entity will be four to five times larger in scale compared to <keyword id="2467342" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="vistara" source="Orion">Vistara</keyword>, with a strong presence in all key airline segments in India. The proposed merger will bolster SIA's presence in India, strengthen its multi-hub strategy, and allow it to continue participating directly in this large and fast-growing aviation market." The airline further said, "Deeper collaboration with like-minded airlines is an integral part of the SIA Group's partnerships strategy. This enables SIA and its partners to drive more traffic to their hubs, offer more options to customers, and increase the Group's global footprint." Last week, Singapore Airlines (SIA) announced that net profit for Q3 which ended in December, came in at Singapore dollar (SGD) 628 million (USD 465 million) and financial year-to-date profits touched SGD 1,555 million (USD 1,152 million). They are the highest the airline has ever earned in a quarter as well as for the first nine months of a financial year. The airlines said in a statement that this is due to "the robust demand for air travel continuing into the third quarter of FY2022/23, building on the momentum that began after Singapore relaxed its border restrictions in April 2022." SIA financial year starts in April. This comes on the back of Singapore's announcement that from February 13, it will relax all remaining Covid restrictions for travellers as well as locals. Travellers who are not fully vaccinated against Covid will no longer need to show proof of a negative pre-departure test before entering Singapore and do not need to buy travel insurance to cover Covid treatment if they fall ill on the island. Those who are vaccinated no longer need to show proof on arrival. The use of a face mask on public transport which was the last remaining local Covid-era protocol is no longer mandatory as of the same date. Singapore was one of the first Asian countries to reopen after the Covid pandemic and that has aided its tourism industry along with its national carrier. Besides government grants to affected industries during Covid, the airline was the beneficiary of its shareholders and financial institutions' confidence in its business as it managed to raise SGD 22.4 billion (USD 16.6 billion) during Covid including SGD 15 billion from shareholders (largest of which is state investment firm Temasek Holdings) through sales of shares and convertible bonds. As of December 2022, it still holds a cash balance of SGD 15.4 billion. This allowed it to keep most of its staff and fleet and facilitated restoration of routes quickly once travel resumed. This was unlike other regional airlines which had to let staff go and sell aircraft to keep afloat.SIA reported that its group passenger capacity reached 80 per cent of pre-Covid levels in December 2022, higher than the average of 51 per cent for the Asia-Pacific region. Its two main airline brands carried 7.4 million passengers in the third quarter, up 17 per cent from the second quarter. When added to the first two quarters, the SIA Group served 18.8 million passengers for the first nine months of the financial year. This is a nine-fold increase from a year earlier (2021) when most of the world's borders were still closed. Passenger load factors for the Group improved by 0.8 percentage points to 87.4 per cent, the highest for any quarter, on the back of record load factors for both premium airline, SIA (87.3 per cent) and low-cost carrier, Scoot (87.8 per cent). SIA reported that its cargo performance moderated compared to the previous quarter due to softening demand, as well as an increase in belly hold capacity as more passenger aircraft returned to service globally. While yields were weaker quarter-on-quarter, they remained elevated -- almost double -- compared to pre-Covid levels. Overall, SIA's revenue for the three months to December rose SGD 358 million (USD 265 million), an 8 per cent quarter-on-quarter increase to SGD 4,846 million (USD 3,589 million), a record. Passenger-flown revenue increased by 14 per cent or SGD 463 million to SGD 3,767 million as traffic grew 12.2 per cent for the quarter, outpacing the 11.1 per cent expansion in capacity. Revenue per available seat-kilometre (RASK) was 10.6 Singapore cents, the highest quarterly RASK in the Group's history. Cargo flown revenue fell 14.1 per cent or SGD 141 million (USD 104 million) to SGD 862 million (USD638 million), with the lower yields which were down 14.6 per cent partially mitigated by a slight uptick in loads, up 0.6 per cent. Expenditure increased 7.4 per cent or SGD281 million (USD208 million) quarter-on-quarter to SGD 4,091 million (USD 3,030 million). This comprised an SGD 371 million (15.5 per cent) rise in non-fuel expenditure that was partly offset by an SGD 90 million decrease (-6.3 per cent) in net fuel cost. The increase in non-fuel expenditure was higher than the increase in capacity, mainly driven by higher foreign exchange losses of SGD 194 million (USD 144 million) recorded at the end of the current quarter with the US dollar weakening 6.1 per cent against the Singapore dollar. Net fuel cost fell to SGD 1,333 million (USD 987 million) mainly due to a 13 per cent drop in fuel prices. This was partly offset by higher volumes uplifted (+USD 103 million) and lower fuel hedging gain (+USD 19 million).
