Overseas travel no longer means the ritual rush through <keyword id="6357117" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="bangkok">Bangkok</keyword> or <keyword id="6356662" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Singapore">Singapore</keyword> – the global destinations closest to home and perhaps the least expensive. Of course, these places are not yet marked off the list, but the experienced and the well-heeled seem to have caught the travel bug of a different kind.<br />

They're finding solutions for operating without helping hands.<br /></strong></li><li><strong>Some restaurant that look like full-service spots have diners seat themselves, fetch their own water, bus their table, and more.</strong></li></ul><p> </p><p>There's something different about San Francisco's restaurant scene these days.</p><p>Its workers are vanishing.</p><p>A new report in <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/25/dining/san-francisco-restaurants-service.html">The New York Times</a> posits that in San Francisco, one of the most expensive cities in America, rising rents and labor costs have forced some restaurants to go without servers. In their absence, diners at popular restaurants such as Souvla and RT Rotisserie seat themselves, fetch their own water, bus their table, and more. </p><p>Restauranteurs call it the "fast-fine" or "fine-casual" model of dining.</p><p>Part of the problem is that restaurant owners can no longer afford staffing their front-of-house. Commercial rent prices have soared alongside <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/why-people-are-leaving-san-francisco-2018-3">housing costs</a>.</p><p>But the Bay Area also faces a dire shortage of restaurant workers, as those who can't afford to live near their place of work <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/san-francisco-housing-so-expensive-people-leaving-2018-4">move away to more affordable regions</a>.</p><p>Restaurant workers in San Francisco earned a median income of just over $30,000 in 2017. That makes them some of the highest-paid restaurant workers in America, according to a study by <a href="https://www.trulia.com/research/affordable-housing-occupation-2018/">real-estate site Trulia</a>. But their income still isn't enough to buy a home.</p><p>Approximately 0.1% of homes on the market are affordable for the city's restaurant workers, Trulia found. The median list price in San Francisco was <a href="https://www.trulia.com/research/affordable-housing-occupation-2018/">$1.477 million</a> at the time the study was conducted. By comparison, restaurant workers in Detroit can afford 50% of homes on the market, while only 2% of homes are affordable in New York.</p><p><span>"We can sit around here, and we can complain and whine and moan," said Charles Bililies, owner of Greek restaurant Souvla. "We can be very negative about this."</span></p><p><span>"Or we can sort of turn this on its head and see an opportunity," he told the Times.</span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.facebook.com/souvlahayes/">Facebook/Souvla</a></span></p><p class="caption">There are no servers at Souvla, though runners do bring food to your table.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p><span>At Souvla, the counter-service restaurant has the look of a full-service spot. Diners sit at copper tables and wood counters under the windows, which flood the airy, high-ceilinged dining room with natural light. Copper pans and fresh herb sprigs hang on the walls.</span></p><p><span>A <a href="https://www.souvla.com/menus/">simple menu</a> offers just two entrées - a sandwich and a salad - made with diner's choice of meat or vegetables. Prices range between $12 and $15 a plate.</span></p><p><span>There are no servers at Souvla, though runners do bring food to your table.</span></p><p><span>"Souvla was the beginning of this whole new onslaught of things that in every single way look like a full-service restaurant - nice décor; good wine list; tasty, healthy foods. It's much more chef- and ingredient-driven," Gwyneth Borden, the executive director of the Golden Gate Restaurant Association, told the Times. "But it's 'take a number and go to a table.'"</span></p><p><span>One restaurant in San Francisco has hatched a more surprising way to operate without restaurant workers. The buzzy new burger joint, Creator, which soft-opens for lunch on Wednesday, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/robot-burger-restaurant-creator-opens-in-sf-2018-6">uses a robot to prep, cook, and assemble hamburgers</a> with no human help.</span></p><p><span>Founded in 2009, the startup formerly known as Momentum Machines has been quietly tinkering with its mechanical line cook out of a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/momentum-machines-is-hiring-2016-6">vacant retail space</a> in SoMa for almost two years. While dozens of the largest tech companies,- like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-highest-paying-internships-in-the-us-2017-5">Facebook, Google, HP, and Cisco</a> - are headquartered on the outskirts of the city, in the heart of Silicon Valley, spending time in San Francisco is a must.</p><p>To help you make the most of your summer in the city, Business Insider has put together a list of some of the best places to eat, drink, and hang out in San Francisco this summer. Once you're there, get ice cream from <a href="http://www.lapperts.com/">Lappert's</a> and fish and chips from <a href="http://www.oursausalito.com/restaurants-best/restaurants-best-lunch-only/fish-and-chips-of-sausalito.html">Fish and Chips</a>.</li><li><a href="http://sfrecpark.org/destination/twin-peaks/">Twin Peaks</a> and <a href="http://www.parksconservancy.org/visit/park-sites/lands-end.html?referrer=https://www.google.com/">Lands End</a> - less tourist-y hikes with spectacular nature views.</li><li><a href="https://offthegrid.com/">Off the Grid</a> - a family style picnic with food trucks and local vendors; located at Fort Mason in the Marina every Friday night, and at the Presidio greens every Sunday afternoon.</li><li><a href="https://www.gocartours.com/">Go Car Tours</a> - Rent Scoots or Go Cars and ride across the Golden Gate Bridge.</li><li><a href="http://sfrecpark.org/destination/mission-dolores-park/">Dolores Park</a> - have a picnic here and bring mimosa supplies, but expect a crowd.</li></ul><p>Transportation and general tips:</p><ul><li>Get a <a href="https://www.clippercard.com/ClipperWeb/index.do" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Clipper card</a> for public transit (MUNI and BART). If you lose it, they'll replace it with a card pre-loaded with your remaining dollars for just $5. If you lose a paper ticket, you lose all the money on it.</li><li>There's <a href="https://www.sfmta.com/">the MUNI bus system and the MUNI train system</a>. If it's a letter, it's underground in the city center. If it's a number, it's a bus above ground. Unless it's the F, then it's always above ground and filled with tourists.</li><li>Shopping bags are taxed in California, so stock up on some reusable cloth bags to save a few cents.</li><li>When you're checking Google Maps to get somewhere, double check the public transportation route. If it tells you to take the Powell Street cable car, you'll be waiting half an hour among tourists just to get on.</li><li>Always carry a jacket. The wind can gust up at any time and fog is a mainstay. It even has a name - <a href="https://twitter.com/KarlTheFog">Karl</a> - and an <a href="http://instagram.com/karlthefog">Instagram</a>.</li><li>Make sure your bank has branches or at least ATMs in the city, because you'll want to start carrying cash. A relatively high number bars and coffee shops don't take cards.</li><li>When your heart sinks walking by the many homeless people and addicts, you can do something about it. Some great places to volunteer are <a href="http://www.glide.org/">Glide</a>, <a href="http://www.sfmfoodbank.org/">SF Food Bank</a>, <a href="http://hamiltonfamilycenter.org/">Hamilton Family Center</a>.</li><li>Late night eats are near impossible to find - most restaurants close at 10 p.m.</li><li>Watch out for hills. If you Google Map something and it says it's only a few blocks away, you might end up walking up a cliff face to get there. <p class="p1"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Photo by: John Chiala/CNBC/NBCU Photo Bank via Getty Images</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Twitter recently started <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/jack-dorsey-makes-first-change-as-twitter-ceo-2015-7">sharing unedited notes from engineering meetings </a>with the entire company, an unusual practice in transparency that it imported from digital payments company Square.</p><p class="p1">The note-sharing could be the first of many such cross-company cultural exchanges, given that Square CEO Jack Dorsey recently took on the additional job of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/twitter-ceo-dick-costolo-will-step-down-2015-6">serving as interim CEO at Twitter</a>. Dorsey co-founded both companies, but for the past couple of years, his main operational focus has been at Square, where he has created a unique corporate culture.</p><p class="p1">Here are a few of the other interesting customs at Square:</p><p class="p1"><strong>Details from board meetings are shared with employees.</strong> Every quarter, Square's board of directors convenes to discuss the state of affairs. The side deck that the board reviews, which contains key business metrics and product roadmaps, is emailed to every employee ahead of the meeting.</p><p class="p1">After the board meeting, employees are invited to an all-hands meetings where feedback from the board is shared and employees can ask questions about the slide decks.</p><p class="p1"><strong>Employees work at local shops.</strong> Employees on product teams are expected to work a few shifts at nearby cafes and restaurants to become familiar with how Square's products perform in the real world and to get a better sense of the needs of merchants. Engineering head Alyssa Henry recently rolled up her sleeves and worked at Souvla, the popular Greek sandwich restaurant in San Francisco's Hayes Valley, for instance.</p><p class="p1" style="text-align: left;"><strong>An in-house coffee shop serves as testing lab.</strong> To ensure that its latest retail payment features are up to snuff, Square built an in-house coffee shop where the company can simulate a real-world retail environment and beta test new software and hardware products. Square employees can order espresso drinks or chai tea lattes from the on-site baristas who sling brews based on local favorites such as Blue Bottle, Sightglass and Four Barrel coffee.</p><p class="p1">Square secretly tested its new wireless credit card reader at the in-house shop for several weeks before announcing it at Apple's developer conference in June.</p><p class="p1"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Square</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p class="p1"><strong>Weekly survey about feelings.</strong> Each new week at Square begins with company executives working with their team to answer a few key questions. Two questions that get asked every week: What are we not talking about? And How do we feel? A Google Doc with all the answers is then shared across the company.</p><p class="p1"><strong>Interns get a wish when they finish.</strong> When interns finish a tour of duty at Square, they do two things: A. share their proudest accomplishments and B. make a wish, which Square usually tries to grant.</p><p class="p1">One departing intern asked for a verified Twitter account, for example. But the most popular wish among departing interns is apparently to be invited to the Square holiday party.</p><p class="p1"><strong>Roaming robots:</strong> Video "windows" provide live video streams of the goings-ons at all of Square's various remote offices, from Tokyo to Toronto. To have a conversation with a far-away colleague just walk up to the screen.
