Indian Oil Corporation is hiring 300 apprentices across southern states of India

<ul><li>77 (35%) of the 221 newly-elected <keyword id="6354780" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Karnataka">Karnataka</keyword> MLAs have declared criminal cases against themselves.</li><li>42 MLAs from the <keyword id="58687" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharatiya-Janata-Party">Bharatiya Janata Party</keyword> (<keyword id="14666" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword>) have criminal backgrounds. </li><li>While 34% of the previous assembly (2013) had a criminal background the percentage was significantly lower in 2008 at 24%. </li></ul>Karnataka Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) analysed affidavits submitted by the newly-elected MLAs (Member of the Legislative Assembly) in the Karnataka assembly. The results of the analysis were hardly surprising - 77 (35%) of the 221 newly-elected MLAs have declared criminal cases against themselves. Of these, 54 MLAs have declared serious criminal cases against them, which could include anything from murder to kidnapping. While 34% of the previous assembly (2013) had a criminal background the percentage was significantly lower in 2008 at 24%. The elections in the southwestern Indian state of Karnataka this week has been fraught with high drama. The results of 222/224 seats were as follows - the BJP won 104 seats, the <keyword id="190679" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-National-Congress">Indian National Congress</keyword> bagged 78 seats and the <keyword id="123462" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Janata-Dal">Janata Dal</keyword> (Secular) won 37 seats. Needless to say, a battle ensued as to who would claim the throne but just today the BJP legislature party leader B S Yeddyurappa was sworn in as the chief minister. According to the ADR analysis, 42 of the 104 MLAs from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have criminal backgrounds, while 23 of the 78 MLAs from the <keyword id="1571" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Congress-party">Congress party</keyword> and 11 out of 37 Janata Dal (Secular) MLAs declared criminal cases against them in their affidavits. Other shocking but not-so-shocking revelations from this report include: Assets <ul><li>215 out of 221 MLAs declared assets of over Rs 1 crore. </li><li>15 MLAs from the three leading parties declared assets of more than Rs 100 crore.</li><li><keyword id="28100" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="MLA">MLA</keyword> N. Nagaraju declared the highest assets of over Rs 1,015 crore whereas D.K Shivakumar (Rs 640 crore) came in second and Suresh B.S. (Rs 460 crore) third - all three belong to the Congress Party.</li><li>SA Ramadas from Krishnaraja constituency in Mysuru is the poorest MLA with assets to the tune of just ₹39 lakh. </li></ul>Gender <ul><li>There are only seven women among the 222 newly elected MLAs.</li></ul>Education <ul><li>61% declared that they are graduates or above, 36% declared themselves as Class V-XII pass</li><li>One MLA has declared he is ‘literate’ while “one did not give his educational qualification in his affidavit."</li></ul>Age <ul><li>135 MLAs are between 41 and 60 years old</li><li>64 are between 61 and 60 years old</li><li>15 MLAs are between 25 and 40 years old </li><li>Three are above 80 years old.</li></ul>

35% of newly elected members of parliament in this Indian southern state just declared a fairly criminal past

New investor registrations witnessed a 2.5 times growth in four months of FY22, compared to the corresponding period of the previous fiscal. "From the geographical presence point of view, 36 per cent new investors registered are from north Indian states, While west Indian states accounts for 30 per cent, southern Indian states accounts for 22 per cent and the remaining 12 per cent are from the east Indian states," the NSE said in a note. "Another interesting trend is that, 53 per cent of new investors registered are from states beyond top 5 ranked states." The NSE's overall registered investor base has now crossed 4.5 crore. New investor registrations on NSE grew 2.5 times to cross 50 lakh mark

Surya, 31, decked in a bright red saree, tied the knot with Ishan, 34 on Thursday under the country’s Special Marriages Act. This first-of-its-kind wedding was celebrated with much fanfare and was attended by many dignitaries, including some influential politicians. We hope this marriage will set the ball rolling.” In 2014, Surya, the bride, underwent sex change surgery and became a woman after which her family ousted her. Her husband, Ishan, being a Muslim, met with a similar, if not worse fate, when he underwent sex change surgery in 2015 to become a man. However, both families accepted their decision and were a part of the wedding celebrations that had over 1000 guests. The couple met each other while working at an NGO for the welfare of transsexuals. Ishan is a businessman and Surya is a well-known <keyword id="1925624" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Malayalam-TV">Malayalam TV</keyword> artiste and activist. Both the bride and groom are members of the government-appointed transgender justice board. “It is just the beginning. We will be a role model for others. We will show the world trans-sexual people can also lead a decent life like others. Society’s attitude is slowly changing,” the bride told the <keyword id="6518498" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="hindustan-times">Hindustan Times</keyword>. After the Indian Supreme Court decided to recognise "Third Gender" in 2014, the state of Kerala was the first to draw up a transgender policy, in 2015. This policy is aimed at upholding the transgender community's freedom from discrimination and right to equality.

The local police have been trying to aid the women trying to trek up to the temple, sometimes even in riot gear, but hasn’t had much luck. According to the state’s chief minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, two women did break through the gates and <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/sabarimala-temple-live-updates-shrine-shut-for-purification-after-2-women-enter-1971269">prayed at the temple</a> — but immediately after, priests shut down the hill shrine to perform ‘purification rituals’. India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, appears to have taken the side of the conservative protestors. In an <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/india/story/pm-modi-ani-interview-triple-talaq-sabarimala-issue-smita-prakash-1421336-2019-01-01">interview</a> with ANI, he pointed to the fact that certain temples do not allow the entry of men, though he did not cite any specific examples. His political party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has previously spoken out against the Supreme Court’s decision in favouring women’s equality. <ul><li>In 2016 alone, about <a href="http://pib.nic.in/newsite/PrintRelease.aspx?relid=178274">427,000</a> foreigners visited <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> to seek medical treatment. </li><li>In 2017, foreign nationals underwent about 25% of the heart transplants and 33% of the lung transplants in Tamil Nadu. </li><li>As on June 9, 2018, the number of active patients on the <keyword id="6402106" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="organ-transplant">organ transplant</keyword> list has 53 foreigners in contrast to 5310 Indians.</li></ul> It is no secret that India’s healthcare sector is desperately shoddy, at least for those who lack resources (read: money). For those who do have ‘resources’, India is an absolute haven with brilliant doctors and top-notch facilities. Take, for example, the country’s booming medical tourism industry. In 2016 alone, about <a href="http://pib.nic.in/newsite/PrintRelease.aspx?relid=178274">427,000</a> foreigners visited India to seek medical treatment. The income from the Indian medical tourism sector was estimated to be around a staggering $3 billion in 2015 and is expected to grow upwards of $7 billion by 2020. And while these numbers may just make one feel proud, a fact to be recognised is that an average Indian is paying a deadly price for all of this. In the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, an organ transplant racket has been unearthed. A report in <a href="http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/tamil-nadu/three-of-four-hearts-harvested-were-given-to-foreigners/article24139531.ece">The Hindu</a> states three out of every four hearts that were harvested from brain-dead patients in <keyword id="12864" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chennai">Chennai</keyword>, the capital of Tamil Nadu, were given to foreign nationals, bypassing the Indian entries on the waiting list. Prof. Bhandari, the director of National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (<keyword id="6399613" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="NOTTO">NOTTO</keyword>), told <a href="http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/chennai/organ-transplant-racket-surfaces-in-tamil-nadu/article24139506.ece?homepage=true">The Hindu</a> that the protocol mandates that an organ should first be offered to an Indian on the waitlist. And if no Indian requires the organ, an NRI should be considered. An international patient can only receive the organ when both of the above options have been visited. However, in 2017, foreign nationals received about 25% of the heart transplants and 33% of the lung transplants in Tamil Nadu. In total, foreigners underwent 31 heart transplants, 32 lung transplants and 32 heart and lung transplants in 2017. In the same year, Indians received 91 heart transplants, 75 lung transplants and 6 heart and lung transplants. Unsurprisingly, securing an organ transplant is a luxury mostly reserved for the rich. Currently, most hospitals in the country charge about Rs. 2 to 2.5 million for a heart transplant, while a kidney transplant can cost around Rs. 200,000 to Rs. 300,000. As on June 9, 2018, the number of active patients on the organ transplant list has 53 foreigners in contrast to 5310 Indians. In a recent high-level <a href="http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/chennai/organ-transplant-racket-surfaces-in-tamil-nadu/article24139506.ece?homepage=true">meeting</a> in New Delhi on the allocation of organs to foreigners, authorities observed that the cost of a heart transplant was so high in Chennai that only foreigners were able to afford it. While the number of organ donors has <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/organ-donation-up-4-fold-in-india-but-still-a-long-way-to-go/articleshow/59855757.cms">increased</a> fourfold, if this trend continues, Indians will not be reaping the benefits.

Xinhua <a href="http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/china/2014-03/22/c_133206426.htm">reports</a> that the Chinese government has spotted an object floating in the Indian Ocean measuring 22 meters in length and 13 meters in width.
The Chinese news agency says the location of the object "is along the southern corridor missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 might have taken, and about 120 km south by west from the location of a suspicious object Australia found before."

<ul><li>Every 4 in 10 people that commit suicide around the world are Indian, and every 7 in 10 are between the ages of 15-39.</li><li><keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>’s suicide death rates (SDRs) not only vary by gender, but also by state, where southern states exhibit a higher percentage of SDRs in comparison to northern states. </li><li>Learning from its Asian neighbors, like <keyword id="6355572" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="sri-lanka">Sri Lanka</keyword> and <keyword id="1334" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="China">China</keyword>, India needs to implement policies to curb the current trend on the rise. </li></ul>It’s normally diseases like cancer, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS that considered to be the biggest threat to life. But, a new study by <keyword id="6361830" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="lancet">Lancet</keyword> Public Health shows that there may be a bigger health crisis looming at the horizon for India - suicide. Every 4 in 10 people who commit suicide around the world are from India. And, between the ages of 15-39, 7 out of 10 individuals are Indians. India may be a big country, but it only accounts for 17.8% of the global population so even in a relative sense, the suicide rates are high. Considering that suicide was a criminal offence up until 2017, it’s possible that these figures are on the low side due to the incidence of under-reporting. The study put forward by Lancet is a part of the India State-Level Disease Burden Initiative carried out in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) and the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) under the <keyword id="191419" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Health-and-Family-Welfare">Ministry of Health and Family Welfare</keyword>. Age differentials The overall suicide rate may be high, but it’s particularly worrying when looking at India’s younger generation between the ages of 15 years to 39 years. Not only is it at 71.2%, but it’s also the leading cause of death for that age group. Road accidents, heart disease and tuberculosis all fall short in comparison to the threat posed by suicides. Gender differentials The incidence of suicide is higher among women in India than it is between men. Where Indian women account for 36.6% of global suicides, Indian men account for 24.3%. According to the report, the majority of the suicides are committed by married women in comparison to the proportion of unmarried women. The report also explains that this may be because, in cases of arranged marriage or early marriage, the environment is less protective against suicide for women. Not to mention the pressure of young motherhood, low social status, domestic violence and economic dependence. Geographical distribution When looking at the state-wise distribution of suicides, the southern states have higher incidences of suicides than the northern states of India. The suicide death rate (SDR) per 100,000 in Karnataka is 30, in Tamil Nadu is 29.8 and in Andhra Pradesh, it’s 25. The states of Jammu and Kashmir, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Delhi, Punjab, Jharkhand and Bihar all recorded an SDR of less than 10 people per 100,000. The report wasn’t able to determine the exact causal relationship as to why the SDRs vary from state to state. One theory is that because some of the states with a lower rate of suicide also exhibit better socioeconomic indicators, the states with a higher rate of suicide have young people who face greater challenges when trying to achieve their life goals. Possible solution It wasn’t long ago that China and Sri Lanka were also staring at high suicide rates. Those countries faced <a href="http://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2012/09/sril-s28.html">similar challenges</a> like poverty, joblessness and high debt burdens creating rampant suicide. Targeting the means of suicides is an effective way to reduce the mortality rate. And, in lower/middle-income countries, a case can be made for the ease of access to highly toxic pesticides. In Sri Lanka, implementing pesticide bans drastically reduced the number of suicides in the country. In China, the age of urbanisation drastically reduced the SDR showing a 20% drop in 10 years. Different research attributes this to higher incomes, better education, less family pressure and, especially, reducing the ease of access to pesticides. Perhaps India needs to embark on similar policy measures in order to control its increasing SDR as well as focus on social measures that will improve the quality of life for the worst affected segments. For the younger generation, particularly, an increase in employment opportunities and better access to education would go a long way in helping them reach their aspirations and lead happier lives.

 In fact, in October, ₹6.7 million businesses filed their GST returns. The ₹1 trillion threshold was initially breached in April, after which collections have consistently been above ₹900 billion but never quite reaching that mark again. The Indian government expects that this time around tax collections will increase further with the festive season just around the corner. Aside from Diwali, Christmas and New Year’s, it’s also wedding season when consumer demand typically increases. The Ministry of Finance also added that the revenue in October pertains to the sales activities for the month of September. In the coming months, the government is hopeful that the increase in demand for consumption will lead to a rise in revenue at an even faster rate. So much so that it’s confident about meeting the <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Companies/209TWMGXqbauGBcvFmiv6K/GST-collection-rises-in-September-still-short-of-Rs-1-trill.html">fiscal deficit of 3.3%</a> of its <keyword id="6354971" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="gross-domestic-product">Gross Domestic Product</keyword> (GDP). State by state Kerala tops the list of ‘extraordinary growth’ with respect to its GST collection with a 44% contribution to total tax deposits across India. The southern state was followed by Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Maharashtra contributing 20%, 14%, 13% and 11% to the total tax collection, respectively. The<a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/economy/finance/gst-collections-cross-the-1-lakh-crore-mark-in-october/articleshow/66457681.cms"> total gross GST</a> revenue collection in October constitutes Central GST of ₹164.64 billion, state GST of ₹228.26 billion, IGST of ₹534.19 billion and cess amounting to ₹80 billion . While the tax regime has yielded positive results for a select few states — Mizoram, Arunachal, Manipur, Nagaland, Sikkim and Andhra Pradesh — others have faced a<a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/business/economy/gst-collections-cross-in-october-5429010/"> shortfall in revenue</a> ranging from a mere 3% to a whopping 42% in states like Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. The GST system in India may have avoided inflation from setting in and widened the tax base, but basic obstacles like registration and compliance are still in play.
