And these shorter ads are getting better if a report by marketing analytics company Kantar is to be believed. As of 2022, 17% of the shorter ads that were tested, cleared the threshold for creativity and effectiveness— as opposed to 7% a year earlier. The rampant popularity of short form video content has made it tougher for advertisers to keep it sharp and singular with vivid dramatisations. <keyword id="169310" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-advertising" source="Orion">Digital advertising</keyword> is growing but those ads that are customised to the platforms are the ones which do better, Soumya Mohanty, managing director and chief client officer at Kantar, tells Business Insider India. Content can be the same, but it has to be customised. “Earlier, a TV ad used to be put online – that’s changing. It has to be customised to the platform, but the challenge is to do so in a way without losing coherence. When I see an ad on FB (Facebook) or YouTube, they turn out to be totally different and that doesn’t help, so integration has to be there,” Mohanty says, explaining how the ad world is fast-evolving. The importance of coherence in the performance of an ad has doubled in importance since 2015, as compared to the pre-2014 era, the Kantar report says. While mediums are different, communication should be similar across TV, YouTube, OOH, print and banner videos. OOH refers to out-of-home advertising and includes billboards, posters etc. What does Bharat want? The eyeball share of ads have been suffering as the number of screens are rising, but the essence of what India wants in ads is the same, observes Kantar. “India wants stories and emotions,” says Mohanty. Then there is an emerging area of buyers who necessitate brands to customise it to their sensibilities too — Bharat. The pie of rural and small town consumers is rising. The market is seeing 2.4x faster growth in rural areas compared with urban areas across premium segments in home, personal and food &amp; beverage (F&amp;B) categories, says the Kantar report. The rural consumer wants her product first and entertainment next; and the ad message needs to be clear and simple without metaphors, and should signal cultural familiarity. “It’s not that you can’t show them an aspirational product or a lifestyle, but do not show them something they are not comfortable with,” says Mohanty. In the last few months, a lot of ads have failed both at the urban, rural and even national level. Mohanty believes that the reason for the same is low testing of ads. “It’s because people decide to go with their gut feeling instead of testing. During testing, red flag ads always get caught. And brands should never do anything that they have to take back,” Mohanty says. Kantar has assessed a multitude of ads to pick the most effective ones across categories. Hindustan Unilever won the most laurels with wins across three categories — ‘food and beverage’, ‘home care’ and ‘un-stereotype’ for Red Label, Surf Excel and Bru, respectively, for TV medium. Welspun walked away with the top honours in the digital category for its QuickDry towel ad.

Kantar’s Managing Directors tell us why ‘Purpose’ is an important contributor to brand equity in India

<ul><li>Tech brands have fared badly in 2023 due to global headwinds, recession threats and more.</li><li>Banking and financial services companies including fintechs saw their value swell during the year.</li><li>PhonePe and Cred were the new entrants into Kantar’s list of Top 75 Indian brands.</li><li>Auto companies made a comeback from Covid-lows with TVS and Mahindra being among the fastest risers. </li></ul>It is not just the share prices of technology services companies that are falling, even their brand value has taken a beating. India’s top brands have borne the brunt of the global economic downturn in 2023. The combined value of Kantar BrandZ’s top-75 Indian brands shed 4% of their value to $379 billion in 2023. Yet, they have fared better than their global counterparts, as its global list has shed 20% of its value. Most of this loss in brand value was seen in Indian tech brands whose value shrunk by 14%. The brands have a major presence in international markets, and have been impacted by global pressures, recession threats and geopolitical instability, says Kantar. “If you exclude tech, the combined brand value is quite stable,” said Soumya Mohanty, managing director and chief client officer, South Asia, Insights Division of Kantar. TCS on the top, as usual The spot of India’s most valuable brand, however, is retained by tech giant TCS. It has shed 6% of its value but has fared better than tech as a sector. “TCS has a strong corporate reputation which makes it more likely to retain clients and business. It can also help enable customer retention which is also a factor that adds to brand value,” Deepender Rana, executive managing director of South Asia Insights Division at Kantar told Business Insider India. Infosys’ brand value dropped by 17%, while HCL Tech’s brand value rose by 3%. Both these brands made it to the top 10. Wipro’s brand value dropped by a sharp 42%. The rest of the list is dominated by banks, telecom companies with only one consumer company, Asian Paints in the top 10. risers of the year. TVS, valued at $1.9 billion, occupies the 51st rank. The company has gained 59% in value and leapt 24 places thanks to a number of successful product launches and a 10-year partnership with BMW that gives it leverage in markets such as Europe, the US and Canada. Mahindra is valued at $2.01 billion and occupies the 47th rank. Mahindra, which grew its value by 48%, made itself incredibly meaningful in consumers’ eyes, and also significantly boosted its salience. The sector saw the second highest category growth of 19%, after tobacco. Royal Enfield’s value also swelled, thanks to Indians’ preference for premium products. A lot of Indian auto brands, like Tata Motors, also entered EV markets and are able to meet consumer needs better, observes Rana. “Auto companies’ value declined during Covid and made a comeback after they dealt with supply chain issues and dealt with bottlenecks,” said Mohanty. India’s largest auto company Maruti Suzuki, however, shed 5% of its brand value, while Bajaj Auto’s brand value went up by 9%. The value in finance Financial services brands have grown their brand value by 6% with 16 brands and contributing to the biggest chunk of the total brand value. Their growth is attributed to growth in digital banking and Axis Bank whose value swelled 28% and now ranks at 17. ICICI Bank which ranks at no 6 also has seen its brand value swell by 18%. Two of this year’s new entrants also belong to the fintech sector — PhonePe and Cred. This is in spite of the fact that tech as a sector saw its value go down during the year. PhonePe has made its debut on the list at No.21 with a value of $4.4 billion. It has quickly become India’s leading digital payment app by investing heavily in the strength of its infrastructure, building connections with partner banks, and developing a huge network of merchant acceptance points, said Kantar. Meanwhile, Cred has entered at no 48 with a brand value of $2 billion. “Growth of credit and other digital trends are adding to the value of fintechs. There is a need for these services and brands are doing a good job of providing them,” Mohanty tells Business Insider India. PayTM, Zomato, Swiggy, Flipkart, Naukri, Oyo and Nykaa have shed value; while Byju’s hasn’t been included in the list this year. These are the findings from the fifth wave of Kantar’s COVID-19 Barometer, the largest global study tracking people’s attitudes, behaviours and expectations across more than 50 markets. Post-pandemic recovery delayed Only one third of people (37%) expect to return to non-essential <keyword id="139079" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Consumer-behaviour">consumer behaviour</keyword> before 2-3 months. Even as many countries relax lockdown laws and commercial businesses reopen, across the world 66% of people say they will continue to avoid busy places, meaning a drag on physical retail environments. Beyond mandated hygiene and social distancing measures, 50% of people want regular testing for all and 43% want mandatory facemasks, led by demand in Asia, but more reluctance in western markets. Nearly everyone is experiencing increased anxiety over money. 56% of households across the world have now experienced a loss of income due to COVID-19. In India, the impact is even more acute, with 74% of households having experienced a loss of income due to COVID-19. This rises to 68% of the Millennial generation and 65% of GenZ. A further 19% expect an impact on their income in the future. In the short-term brands and retailers need to prove their value As the financial impact of the crisis becomes increasingly apparent, across the world consumers consistently speak of a sense of pride in finding value, making smart decisions, and quietly enabling their own long-term success. 53% of consumers are paying more attention to products on sale (vs 36% in wave1). Offering discounts and promotions is now the third highest expectation of brands, (vs 5th in wave 2). 69% of consumers say a shopping list is more important now globally as well as in India. Beyond pricing strategies, consumers expect brands to keep advertising and acknowledge the crisis; three in four (74%) are happy with the volume of advertising, and only 14% want to see pre-pandemic ‘normal’ advertising. Two thirds of consumers are looking for help and advice - for themselves (64%) and their communities (65%) in the adverts they see and in actual brand behaviour. In India too, more than half of consumers would like to see lot more of advertising which shows what brands are doing to help the community (57%) and the people themselves (54%). Grocery stores are recognised as delivering value in the short term. 40% of consumers globally and 60% in India perceive their grocery store experience to be more positive while 69% perceive employees to be friendly and helpful and grocery stores to be acting on their promises; both metrics significantly outperforming CX benchmarks. Ecommerce usage continues to soar. 40% (vs 33% in wave 3) of consumers now say they have increased or significantly increased their online purchasing, rising to 48% for households with children and millennial households. India too shows a positive trend for Ecommerce usage (45% vs 40%) in Wave 3). Low pricing and promotions rank as the biggest reasons. Innovate to align with the new rhythms of life People have started to like their lockdown habits. More than half (52%, 57% Millennial, 55% GenZ believe they will maintain lockdown behaviours post-pandemic. In India too, (53%, 56% Millennial, 61% - 35+ year olds) likely to maintain behaviours adopted during the pandemic. Increased hygiene, healthier eating, spending time with the family and personal development are most likely to be maintained. More than half the world (51%) now claim to be trying to exercise more. These changes all lead to different needs and spending patterns, and with more than half the world also feeling financial pressure, brands need to ensure their products make the cut in being considered vital in the new rhythms of life. The basic premise of CX+ is that brand and customer experience have become synonymous, in this increasingly connected environment. New Delhi, Mar 4 () Even as awareness for insurance has increased in the country over the last one year, urban India continues to feel financially insecure, according to a survey.Max Life Insurance Company (Max Life) on Wednesday unveiled the findings of the second edition of its flagship survey 'Max Life India Protection Quotient' 2.0 in association with KANTAR.The sample size of the survey conducted between December 2019 to Januayr 2020 was 7,014, wherein 25 cities were covered -- 6 metros, 9 tier I and 10 tier II cities.Of the other parameters, the survey asked questionnaire from people (between 25-55 years) having annual household income of Rs 2 lakh and above, as well as those who were decisions makers or influencers of financial products.India Protection Quotient moved up by 2 points to 37, as per the survey.The survey witnessed an increase in India's level of term insurance awareness, term insurance ownership and protection quotient over the last 12 months.However, with a movement of 2 points on the protection quotient scale from 35 to 37, it indicated that urban India continues to feel financially insecure.The knowledge Index at 48, rose 9 points and life insurance ownership surged 500 bps to 70 per cent from last year. Term insurance ownership increased 700 bps to 28 per cent, whereas term awareness jumped 1,000 bps to 57 per cent.Also, the knowledge index across cities moved up by at least 6 points and Delhi continues to lead with protection quotient of 47.The study said that while South India continued to outperform other regions with protection quotient of 40 and life insurance ownership of 77 per cent, Western India witnessed the most significant growth of 7 points in life insurance ownership at 64 per cent.Delhi and Hyderabad led with the Protection Quotient of 47 and 46, respectively, while Ludhiana despite witnessing the maximum growth from last year, continued to have the lowest level of 27 this year. Chennai is the only city to witness a decline from last year on the quotient.Term insurance products witnessed the highest rise in awareness (1,000 bps to 57 per cent) and ownership (700 bps to 28 per cent) among different product categories such as market linked insurance and endowment products.Over the year, millennials have grown more anxious about financial security with their top anxieties being day to day medical expenses and sustaining lifestyle.When compared, women remained more anxious about financial security than men across several parameters. The survey also revealed that Tier II cities focus more on savings than protection, and demonstrated a preference of endowment polices over term insurance, as per the findings of the survey."Outcomes of IPQ 2.0 gives me the confidence that Indian Life Insurance industry is moving in the right direction. Sharp increase in awareness and ownership of life insurance and term insurance can be seen as a precursor to higher protection quotient in the years to come," Max Life Managing Director &amp; CEO Prashant Tripathy said.The survey also gave the industry some deep insights for future such as the growing reception towards health apps in return for discounted premiums that young India is reflecting preference for, return of premium as the key feature, continued preference for human sellers and growing awareness about insufficiency of cover among other such findings, he said."It has been observed that Indians do not give much thought to this basic element of financial planning due to which awareness level about life insurance products for financial protection is low.
