Hyundai Sonata now offers Android Auto system in the US

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Kia and Hyundai are rolling out a free anti-theft software upgrade for models targeted by thieves.</li><li>A group called the "Kia Boyz" started a viral TikTok challenge showing how to start the cars using a USB cord.</li></ul><p>Kia and Hyundai are starting to roll out free anti-theft software upgrades for car models that have been targeted by a viral social media challenge that teaches people how to steal them.</p><p>Some Kia models from 2011 to 2021 and some Hyundai models from 2016 to 2021 use traditional keys, which means they <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/glitch-in-hyundais-and-kias-makes-them-easy-to-steal-2022-9">don't have electronic immobilizers in them to prevent</a> the cars from starting if there's no key present.</p><p>A group of teens from Milwaukee, Wisconsin called the "Kia Boyz" started a TikTok challenge <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/glitch-in-hyundais-and-kias-makes-them-easy-to-steal-2022-9">teaching people how to start the cars</a> using just a screwdriver and a USB charging cable, the <a href="https://www.stltoday.com/news/local/accident-and-incident/tiktok-video-sparks-a-rash-of-kia-and-hyundai-auto-thefts-in-st-louis-area/article_cd93c87f-c848-5411-b8af-3ea72c153f72.html">St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported</a>. Police started noticing the car-stealing trend in late 2020, Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/police-car-owners-wrestle-with-growing-thefts-of-kias-hyundais-11662638401">told The Wall Street Journal</a>.</p><p>Eligible car owners are being notified by Kia and Hyundai about how to get the free upgrades. The upgrade takes less than an hour to install, both vehicle manufacturers said. </p><p>In <a href="https://www.hyundainews.com/en-us/releases/3768" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a press release from Hyundai</a>, the car manufacturer said the upgrade "modifies certain vehicle control modules on Hyundai vehicles equipped with standard 'turn-key-to-start' ignition systems."</p><p>"As a result, locking the doors with the key fob will set the factory alarm and activate an 'ignition kill' feature so the vehicles cannot be started when subjected to the popularized theft mode," Hyundai said.</p><p>Car owners can deactivate the "ignition kill" feature by unlocking their car with the key fob. </p><p>Some Kia car owners have already received a software upgrade, and other owners will be able to get the upgrade in the next few months, Kia said in a statement shared with Insider. The car manufacturer added that steering wheel locks are also available at no cost through some local law enforcement agencies.</p><p>"The company remains concerned about incidents of car theft targeting certain Kia models, encouraged in some cases by social media content promoting criminal conduct, and is committed to supporting law enforcement and<br />owners in addressing these crimes," Kia said in the statement.</p><p>Hyundai said in its press release that the upgrade will go out to almost 4 million vehicles beginning February 14. The 2017 to 2020 Elantra, 2015 to 2019 Sonata, and 2020 to 2021 Venue vehicles will get the upgrade first.</p><p>"We have prioritized the upgrade's availability for owners and lessees of our highest selling vehicles and those most targeted by thieves in order for dealers to service them first," Randy Parker, CEO of Hyundai Motor America, said in the press release. </p><p>Cars that receive the software upgrade will also get a window decal "to alert would-be thieves that the vehicle is equipped with enhanced anti-theft technology," Hyundai said. Other vehicles will be eligible for the upgrade beginning in June, <a href="https://www.hyundainews.com/en-us/releases/3768">including different models</a> of the Elantra, Sonata, and Santa Fe.</p><p>Since 2021, thefts of Kia and Hyundai vehicles have been climbing throughout the country, according to <a href="https://www.iihs.org/news/detail/hyundais-kias-are-easy-targets-amid-boom-in-vehicle-thefts">a report from the Highway Loss Data Institute</a>.</p><p>Car thefts in Denver have risen by 160% since 2018, and most of the thefts are Kia and Hyundai cars, <a href="https://www.denver7.com/news/local-news/why-some-kia-and-hyundai-vehicles-top-denvers-most-stolen-list">Denver7 reported</a>. Claims of stolen cars were almost twice as common for Kia and Hyundai models from 2015 to 2019 compared to all other car makes, according to <a href="https://www.iihs.org/news/detail/hyundais-kias-are-easy-targets-amid-boom-in-vehicle-thefts">the HLDI report</a>.</p><p>Theft rates for some Kia and Hyundai models are so high that State Farm and Progressive <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/state-farm-progressive-insurance-policies-kia-hyundai-car-thefts-2023-1?IR=C">temporarily stopped writing insurance policies</a> for some of the models in some cities last month.</p><p>"Given that we price our policies based on the level of risk they represent, this explosive increase in thefts in many cases makes these vehicles extremely challenging for us to insure," Jeff Sibel, a spokesperson for Progressive, <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/27/business/progressive-state-farm-hyundai-kia/index.html">told CNN</a> last month. "In response, in some geographic areas we have increased our rates and limited our sale of new insurance policies on some of these models." </p><p>The insurance companies did not reply to requests for comment from Insider.</p>

We've heard that it values the company at over $1 billion.</strong></li><li><strong>The company has pivoted from a music identification app, into building out Houndify - a platform that lets companies quickly build their own voice assistants, like Apple's Siri or Amazon's Alexa. </strong></li><li><strong>With this round, the company's roster of investors now includes Hyundai, Daimler, and European carrier Orange. </strong></li><li><strong>The CEO of SoundHound tells us that it's building a strategic alliance of these kinds of big companies, providing them with an alternative to working with Amazon or Google.</strong></li></ul><p>Chinese tech giant Tencent is leading a huge $100 million funding round for SoundHound, the startup announced on Wednesday.</p><p>Hyundai, Daimler, European carrier Orange, and Chinese appliance maker Midea are some of the other companies contributing to this sizable round. SoundHound did not disclose its valuation following this round, but a person familiar with the company says it's worth over $1 billion, making it a unicorn.</p><p>It's going to use those funds to go up against some of the biggest names in technology, including Apple, Amazon, and Google. SoundHound CEO Keyvan Mohajer tells us that he's not afraid of those 800-pound gorillas, though.</p><p>"We said, don't be afraid," said Mohajer. "I always tell my team members, think of your competitors are variables in a complex set of equations."</p><p>SoundHound used to be best known for its eponymous music-identifying app, but now its main product is called Houndify. Basically, Houndify lets any software developer quickly and easily build a voice assistant, using technology built by SoundHound over the 13 years since it was founded.</p><p>There are already several voice assistants, but Mohajer says that SoundHound is a better fit for integration with established brands who may be worried that the tech giants would "hijack their users." </p><p>"If you're Mercedes Benz, and you work very hard to create this really good brand, and you integrate Amazon Alexa in your Mercedes Benz, then your user has to log into an Amazon account when they buy the product, or they might have to create one, and they have to call your Mercedes Benz 'Alexa,' and the data goes to Amazon and there's no differentiation," Mohajer said.</p><p>But unlike Apple's Siri or Amazon's Alexa, developers can rename Houndify's assistant - so, in a hypothetical example, Hyundai could let its drivers summon their assistant by saying the brand name "Sonata," rather than invoke Amazon's Alexa. </p><p>"Big companies don't like to adopt these assistants made by Amazon and Google and Apple. They want to have their own, they want to customize, they want to differentiate, they want to keep their users," he continued. "The Houndify platform offers exactly that." </p><h2>Strategic friends</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>SoundHound</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>This is the second large round SoundHound has raised that comes mainly from strategic partners - that is to say, companies that make money on their own - as opposed to financial vehicles like venture capital funds. In 2015, it raised money from <span>Samsung, NVIDIA, HTC, and several other companies. </span></p><p>There's a good reason for that, Mohajer said. He's building an alliance of companies that may be worried about giants like Amazon or Apple eating their lunch. </p><p>In fact, he says his funding strategy is the opposite of Amazon's $100 million <a href="https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/startups/the-alexa-fund-and-the-new-alexa-accelerator/">Alexa Fund</a>, which funds small early-stage startups that are building out the market for the Alexa agent.</p><p>"Their response to us was the Alexa Fund, $100 million and basically they're gonna bribe companies to adopt the Alexa platform,"  Mohajer said. </p><p>Instead of investing in small companies, SoundHound wants big companies to invest in it. The idea started in 2015, when SoundHound released Houndify, and Amazon launched Alexa. They were competing for the same thing: People who wanted to build voice apps. To grab developers, Alexa started to give them money. </p><p>"We developed a strategy that was the reverse of Alexa Fund. So Alexa Fund gave $100 million to small startups that are not yet successful and hope that they will succeed. The Houndify alliance fund went to big companies that are already successful, that already have successful products, we let them invest in us, to encourage them to adopt the Houndify platform," he explained.</p><p>"If you think about it, Amazon cannot copy that idea!"</p><p>Now, Mohajer says that it actually had to fend off investors as it raised this round. <p>The two services are both designed to make driving safer by allowing users to plug their smartphones into the built-in displays on their car's dashboard.</p>
<p>A new video from <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCAWLKcohGE&amp;feature=youtu.be">9to5Mac's Dom Esposito examines how the two competing services work</a> in the 2015 Hyundai Sonata, a car which offers both CarPlay and Android Auto.</p>
<p>Android Auto, while still in beta, looks quite polished.</p>

You can see the weather, dictate and receive messages, make phone calls, listen to music and podcasts, and access navigation with Google Maps.</p>
<p>Apple's CarPlay features a much simpler interface and relies heavily on Siri for responding to notifications and dictating and listening to messages.</p>

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">For now, both services offers a lot of the same features, so it will probably come down to personal preference. Luckily, if the trend of offering both services in the same cars continues, you'll be able to switch between the two even if you change devices.</span></p>

Here Are The Main Differences Between Apple CarPlay And Android Auto

<p>Last week we reported on <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-testing-street-view-competitor-2015-2">a mysterious Apple van</a> making its way around San Francisco.</p>
<p>After writing about how the van <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/cameras-atop-mystery-apple-van-could-be-self-driving-car-2015-2">could be used for a self-driving car</a>, we got an unsolicited email from an employee at Apple about "vehicle development" at the company.</p>
<p>This person said Tesla employees were <span>"</span><span>jumping ship" to work at Apple.</span></p>
<p><span><span>"</span><span>Apple's latest project is too exciting to pass up," the person said. "I think it will change the landscape and give Tesla a run for its money."</span></span></p>
<p>Apple has about 50 employees who previously worked at Tesla, according to LinkedIn. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Many of those hires were engineers who interned at Tesla. </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Most of the engineers Apple has hired from Tesla specialize in mechanics, manufacturing, and robotics.</span></p>
<p>We can think of a couple of possibilities here. Apple may indeed be building some kind of vehicle, although this seems way outside the company's core.</p>
<p>More likely, it's working on new iPhone-to-car experiences that will be better than what Tesla offers in its own vehicles. Apple has an initiative called CarPlay that lets you control certain a car's entertainment and other systems with your smartphone. It was supposed to come out in 2014, but has been delayed, and has only just started to emerge on cars like the <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/cars/2015/02/08/apple-car-play-hyundai/23079259/">2015 Hyundai Sonata</a>.</p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">So perhaps this Apple employee is talking about things like using your iPhone to unlock and drive a CarPlay-partner car without needing a key - <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_eC7CURfG2U">Tesla began offering this with its 6.0 system update last year</a>. Or perhaps a much deeper set of integrated experiences with navigation, audio, and other systems.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Whether or not Apple is working on a car of its own, the company seems to compete with Tesla for top talent.</span></p>
<p>Tesla has hired about 150 people from Apple so far, <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-02-05/want-elon-musk-to-hire-you-at-tesla-work-for-apple">according to Bloomberg</a>, and <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Apple has reportedly tried to appeal to potential Tesla hires with $250,000 signing bonuses and huge salary hikes.</span></p>
