They wanted to wipe out their utility bill, but the price seemed too steep.Then, in late 2016, the couple came across a deal they felt they couldn't refuse.A salesman from Powerhome Solar visited their home and offered them a solar-<keyword id="6357014" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="energy">energy</keyword> system for no upfront cost that he said would nearly erase their utility bill, according to the Rickenbaughs. They'd just have to make monthly payments for the panels that would be no more than the savings on their electricity bill from Duke Energy, they said.In 2017, the Rickenbaughs signed up, agreeing to pay more than $15,000 for their system. How a major solar company uses misleading tactics to sell energy systems that can cost $40,000 or more, according to insiders, legal claims, and leaked memos

Todd Pederson, CEO of solar installer Vivint, had some harsh words for rival <keyword id="411133" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="SolarCity">SolarCity</keyword> when I spoke to him on the phone last week.
He says SolarCity is constantly trying to poach his employees because it has no idea how to cost-effectively acquire customers and build out a big national solar business. 
Pederson is one of the more interesting executives that we've come across. He started off selling pest control out of a trailer in Arizona. After doing pest control sales for a few years, he pivoted into home security. From there, he started doing home automation.
Today, Vivint is working on solar installation, wireless internet, home automation, and much more. Blackstone paid $2 billion for Vivint in 2012. 
Both SolarCity and Vivint do solar insallation. That is, installing solar panels on people's homes, and wiring up the systems. 
Over the phone, we asked Pederson how he feels about going up against Elon Musk's solar company. 
Here's his full response:
We've got to where SolarCity took 8 years to get to in 2.
Elon Musk's cousin, whatever his name is, Lyndon or whatever, he spends his entire day doing what? Recruiting Vivant's sales guys. I'm not joking. Every day, day in, day out, trying to recruit our people away from us. Because all they know how to do is raise capital and run a company.
What we know how to do? Customer acquisition, field service expertise, installation of equipment, integration of services. They don't know how to do - this is not what they're good at - literally I laugh, this is the biggest form of flattery.
We've never tried to recruit one SolarCity person. We don't need to. We're incredible at recruiting, training, sales people, providing incredible service for our consumers. We dominate on SolarCity at that stuff. I'm not even kidding.
So, yesterday, five people are flying out to meet with Lyndon and Elon Musk and hear their stories. I'm like, "Sweet!" I've got the largest solar company - who knows what Elon's considered, everything to every one? - recruiting my employees. That's pretty awesome.
They realize that we're the best in the industry at residential solar. Or else they wouldn't be hiring my people, trying to hire my people - they're going to get a few.
I'm not afraid of Elon Musk and SolarCity. I'm telling you right now, we will pass them up. We have 800,000 customers on a platform, they have 85. We have a sales force that dwarfs their sales force.
We have a nationwide footprint for field service and technical service. They have a teeny little, probably 15% of field service coverage in the U.S., we have 98%. We're a substantially larger company, not by market cap, but by size, true capable size. So, [SolarCity is] no problem. 
Pederson added later in our conversation:
If they wanted me to hire and train people for them, I'd do it for them, I'm that nice of a guy...
We fired our president of solar six months ago, he went to work there. Instead of trying to figure out how to do it themselves, they're just hiring our sales managers, which is fine...
Obviously, we're better at customer acquisition and targeted sales acquisition than they are. 
The solar business is so big and so massive, it doesn't really matter. It's less than 3% of penetration in the residential market. They'll probably be big, we'll just be bigger is the bottom line. 
In response to Pederson's comments, SolarCity gave us the following comment:
This is a small industry. We compete, but we don't take shots at our competitors. We all share the same goal-more clean energy, and the good thing is that whatever competition we inspire in one another will further that cause.

SOLAR WAR: CEO Of Upstart Solar Company Vivint Takes A Huge Shot At Elon Musk's SolarCity

<a href="https://twitter.com/juleshyman/status/392289890710212608">Bloomberg's Julie Hyman</a> noted the stock has the 13th largest short interest as a percentage of float in the S&amp;P 500. In other words, there are a lot of people betting against the company.
On Thursday, the company <a href="http://news.investors.com/technology/101613-675347-first-solar-to-build-plant-for-nextera.htm">announced</a> it was building a 250-megawatt <keyword id="45681" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Solar">solar</keyword> farm in Riverside, Calif. for power plant developer NextEra.
First Solar has climbed more than 56% YTD and 110% over the past 12 months.

First Solar Shares Are Surging

<keyword id="358452" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="First-Solar">First Solar</keyword> shares are up 18.75% after the largest <keyword id="45681" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Solar">solar</keyword> panel manufacturer in the U.S. <a href="http://investor.firstsolar.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=803279">crushed</a> earnings forecast.
The company reported adjusted earnings per share of $2.28, compared with $0.99 expected. Unadjusted earnings came in at $1.94/share.
Net sales were $1.3 billion in the quarter, up 74% from Q2 and from the prior quarter and 204% from Q3 2012.

First Solar Shares Are Going Totally Nuts

<ul><li><keyword id="44734" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Government">Indian government</keyword> had set a target to achieve 100 GW solar energy by 2022. However, a Crisil report said that India can achieve 70-80% of its aim. </li><li>India will need to create a platform for domestic manufacturing along with favourable policies. </li><li>India recently imposed 25% safeguard duty on imports from China and Malaysia, which also hurt Indian manufacturers. </li></ul>The Indian <keyword id="163297" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="solar-industry">solar industry</keyword> has been shining bright over the years with the government pre-achieving its initial target of 20 GW solar energy by 2022. Now, even with a renewed target of 100 GW by 2022, it is looking increasingly unlikely the country will hit the number unless the government steps up efforts. According to a recent <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Industry/HEugjBRI2zsNDyVzB2E1kJ/India-may-not-reach-100GW-solar-power-target-by-2022-Crisil.html">Crisil report</a>, if India wants to head towards the 100 GW goal, it has to bring in policies in the <keyword id="7190005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="interim-budget-2019">Interim Budget 2019</keyword> that will change the fate of the solar industry. Thus far, the industry has seen a favourable push by the Indian government such as the development of solar parks. But also faced setbacks with an added <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/energy/power/sc-lifts-stay-on-safeguard-duty-on-solar-imports/articleshow/65759673.cms">safeguard duty</a> on solar panels imported from China and Malaysia, which is adding to the costs of the manufacturers. Platform for domestic manufacturing Specifically, India will need to reduce import duties or push the growth of manufacturing in India of solar equipment, to boost growth. “The decrease in import of solar equipment will only be possible if domestic manufacturers are given a platform, through subsidies and schemes that allow us to showcase our capabilities compete with the global best. Currently, most solar manufacturers in India have to channel their focus on competing with low quality imports at unsustainable prices, said Sunil Rathi, Director, Waaree Energies. China’s dominance in the manufacturing of solar modules has resulted in many Indian manufacturers depending on them for the implementation of solar projects in India. <a href="https://www.chinabusinessreview.com/how-china-is-forging-a-new-global-clean-energy-landscape/">In 2017, </a>Chinese solar manufacturers alone were responsible for 68% of global solar cell production and more than 70% of the world’s production of solar panels or modules. “The required financial support will help, as most solar cells are imported, adding to the manufacturers’ costs,” said Rathi. Reduced taxes Experts believe that the upcoming Interim Budget will be crucial, as it not only would help manufacturers to gauge the support that the Government plans give the sector, but also understand how it envisions the way forward for the industry. “We hope that the government continues to focus on reducing the corporate tax rate to help the country move towards a lower tax regime,” said Andrew Hines, Co-Founder, CleanMax Solar. Taxes and duties remaining stable is a big hope from Indian players. “A universal anti-dumping policy and a more stringent safeguard duty would curb an influx of low quality products, and also instil confidence within the sector,” said Rathi. Rathi added that the recent proposal regarding the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Certification has been welcomed by the solar industry and will ensure quality raw materials are made available to manufacturers. It is likely to also attract more investment from players, both national and international. Rooftop solar capacity According to a report by <a href="https://bridgetoindia.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/BRIDGE-TO-INDIA-India-RE-Outlook-2019-1.pdf">Bridge to India</a>, the rooftop solar capacity addition in India is projected to be 2,368 GW in 2019, 49% higher than in 2018. To expand the rooftop industry to other customer segments, Hines believes that incentives could be more productively redirected to the residential and MSME segments. This could help develop those segments that are nonexistent today but have huge potential. “A transparent and consumer-friendly feed-in-tariff for residential consumers would be a great way to spur growth in this segment, but the policy should be well thought through to be effective,” said Hines. With India taking the lead along with France in the <a href="https://www.thebetterindia.com/160476/india-france-modi-solar-alliance-news/">International Solar Alliance</a>, an alliance of more than 121 countries, the government will have to make way for growth by bringing forward policies the industry wants for progress.
