Irani, the BJP MP from Amethi in Uttar Pradesh managed a spectacular win this election against Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi. Irani, who held the Information and Broadcasting Ministry (I&amp;B) before the country went into elections, had been shuffled around many times in the cabinet. She had held the Human Resource Development Ministry and also Textiles later. The former television actress had entered politics in 2003, as she joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Though she had lost to Rahul Gandhi at Amethi during the 2014 general elections, she managed a stunning turnaround with her relentless campaigning this time around. Smriti Irani gets two portfolios – Women & Child Development and Textiles

HRD minister <keyword id="6612" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Smriti-Irani">Smriti Irani</keyword> has asked <keyword id="49737" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IITs">IITs</keyword> to teach Sanskrit language so that study of science and technology can be facilitated as reflected in its literature. 
 
A panel was set up, chaired by former CEC N Gopalaswami, which has submitted its report in the Lok Sabha, saying that IITs may facilitate study of science and technology as reflected in Sanskrit literature along with inter-disciplinary study of Sanskrit and modern subjects, as per HRD Minister Smriti Irani. 
 
 
"Accordingly, IITs have been requested to teach Sanskrit language especially with reference to study of works which contain scientific knowledge," Irani said.

In the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=modi+cabinet+reshuffle&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Modi Cabinet rejig</a>, her demotion to Textiles Ministry is also stunning, but many predicted that she won’t be able to hold on to education ministry for long. 
 
Several issues eclipsed her stint at the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=HRD+ministry&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">HRD ministry</a>, starting with her degree controversy.

Irani was mired in a controversy over her claims of possessing a Yale degree. Secondly, she scrapped the four-year format at the Delhi University and went back with the three-year format, which was against the wishes of the VC and UGC. 
 
The HRD Ministry was also at loggerheads with the Niti Ayog over accreditation and other issues. Experts say Irani took Niti Ayog as interference. 
 
Her handling of suicide case of Dalit scholar at Hyderabad Central University, Rohith Vemula, was also criticised by many. 
 
The recent Jawaharlal Nehru University row involving Kanhaiya Kumar also didn’t add to her sheen. Irani also played with fire when replaced German with Sanskrit as the third language in Kendriya Vidyalayas in 2014. 
 
Irani was also at the centre of the controversy when she was accused of intervening in the affairs of IIT-Delhi prompting the resignation of Director RK Shevgaonkar, two years before his term.

These are the possibilities why Smriti Irani was removed from education ministry

<keyword id="6356755" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Madras">IIT Madras</keyword> has been picked as India's best engineering college by Smriti Irani's Ministry of Human Resource and Development. 
 
The announcement was made on Monday under National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) – a first-of-its-kind indigenous ranking framework for higher education institutions. 
 
IIT Madras topped the list followed by IIT Mumbai and IIT Kharagpur. 
 <keyword id="60501" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIM-Bangalore">IIM Bangalore</keyword> was declared the best management institute followed by IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Calcutta as the first and second runner up respectively. 
 
The top 3 in Pharmacy were announced in this order: MCOPS (Manipal), UIPS (Chandigarh) and Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi as the top 3 in this segment. 
 Then came the top 3 in Universities Category where IISc Bangalore topped the list followed by Institute of Chemical Technology and <keyword id="6356383" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="JNU">JNU</keyword> ranked third. 
 The report by Smriti Irani's department - <keyword id="3309858" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="India-Rankings-2016">India Rankings 2016</keyword> - seeks to "empower students and parents" while creating healthy competition among educational institutes, the ministry said. 
 
The rankings -which cover government and private institutions -have been released ahead of the next academic year which starts in the summer for college students.

Irani might have gained from the Modi wave in the state and exasperation of the public against the Gandhi family who has been showing up only for elections. In fact, this time around Rahul who has been busy campaigning across the country, never even bothered to show up at his constituency. He sent his sister, Priyanka Gandhi to take up the mantle. Priyanka was welcomed with posters asking on her brother’s no-show. And, she too was criticized for showing up once in every five years. The tide has turned Irani who garnered a margin 49.7% votes, had countered a lack of Gandhi disinterest, with spirited campaigning. She had reached out to people, spoke to them, challenged dynasty politics and asked why Rahul was missing at the constituency for 15 years. When Rahul sensed the turning tide, he decided to contest from Waynad when she accused him of “running”. The stage for this victory was set in 2014 itself when BJP fielded Irani against Gandhi. Until then, few parties ever bothered to field their best candidates which includes regional parties like Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Samajwadi Party (SP). BJP refused to back down on this Congress stronghold which brought on this victory today. Last elections too, she managed to reduce Rahul’s margin who won only by a lakh votes. The firebrand Irani is a well-known face across the country, thanks to being a lead star in a soap opera which ran for over 15 years, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi (Every mother-in-law was once was a daughter-in-law) She had played a soft spoken and hence an ideal wife in the hit TV series. But she blossomed to become one of the most outspoken of ministers in Modi’s cabinet which is not actually known for diplomatic people. She had come down on people in favour of Narendra Modi, the prime minister. Her speeches ranged from angry to emotional to exasperation; taking her leader’s word to media channels across issues. However, it is interesting to note that Irani who is mentored by late union telecom minister Pramod Mahajan never started as a Modi fan.  The Cabinet has seen some major changes as <keyword id="6612" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Smriti-Irani">Smriti Irani</keyword> is no more the education minister and has been moved to textiles.

In Amethi, Congress’s Rahul Gandhi and BJP’s Smriti Irani are up against 25 other challengers

NEW DELHI: <keyword id="58687" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Bharatiya-Janata-Party">Bharatiya Janata Party</keyword> is considering a suggestion to field former Madhya Pradesh CM <keyword id="42642" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Uma-Bharti">Uma Bharti</keyword> and TV actor and Rajya Sabha MP <keyword id="6612" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Smriti-Irani">Smriti Irani</keyword> against <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword> president <keyword id="689" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Sonia-Gandhi">Sonia Gandhi</keyword> and <keyword id="5268" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Rahul-Gandhi">Rahul Gandhi</keyword> in Rae Bareli and Amethi respectively. 
 
Party sources said a decision could be expected on Friday itself as BJP considers where to turn up the heat on the Congress's prestigious seats. 
 <keyword id="6464304" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Senior-BJP-leader">Senior BJP leader</keyword> M Venkaiah Naidu confirmed the party had received suggestions and was considering them. Uma Bharti was earlier given a ticket for Jhansi. 
 The suggestion that Bharti should take on Sonia in Rae Bareli was made by yoga guru <keyword id="6355107" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Baba-Ramdev">Baba Ramdev</keyword>, and has found traction among those who feel the sanyasin's entry in the fray will help pin Sonia down in her constituency. 
 
This school of thought has been encouraged by the assessment that the anti-Congress mood may have rendered even Sonia and Rahul vulnerable: an estimate strengthened by Congress's desperate wooing of erstwhile Amethi royal Sanjay Singh and his wife Amita. 
 According to BJP sources, Sanjay was ready to cross over before Congress lured him back by offering a RS seat from <keyword id="6354915" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Assam">Assam</keyword> 
 
This was followed by his wife being given the Congress ticket for the neighbouring Sultanpur seat. 
 
However BJP sources also indicated that only one of the two — either Bharti or Irani — could take the field against the Gandhis. 
 "There is no point in fielding two <keyword id="624" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Women">women</keyword> in adjoining constituencies," said a party source. 
 
Moreover, there are also signs to suggest that Bharti may not like to give up her ticket for Jhansi. The constituency bordering MP is considered to be safer. 
 
However, the party does not seem inclined to give her two seats in the same state.

BJP May Field Uma Bharti, Smriti Irani Against Sonia And Rahul

<ul><li><keyword id="6612" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Smriti-Irani">Smriti Irani</keyword>, Minister for Women and Child Development along with 30 participating organisations launched ‘<keyword id="8282463" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="yuwaah">YuWaah</keyword>’ — <keyword id="8282462" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="generation-unlimited">Generation Unlimited</keyword>’ — to train youth between 10 and 24 years of age. </li><li>The initiative supported by <keyword id="56000" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="UNICEF">UNICEF</keyword>, aims to engage over 300 million youngsters in education, skill training or employment over the next decade. </li><li>In 2018, UNICEF initiated the Generation Unlimited partnership, globally. India is one of the first countries to partner with the initiative. </li></ul>Every month a million people in India turn 18, ready to take up jobs. To help them, Smriti Irani, Minister for Women and Child Development launched ‘YuWaah’ — Generation Unlimited’. The government partnered with 30 participating to train the youth between the ages of 10 and 24. The initiative is supported by UNICEF. It aims to engage over 300 million youngsters in education, skills training or employment over the next decade. “The government is determined to make YuWaah a transformational alliance that brings a national step change in preparing young people for the transition from education to 21st century work,” Irani said at the launch. India is in dire need of skills training as its efforts have to be intensified by ten fold. Skilling needs to be much more aspirational, KP Krishnan, Secretary, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship said. In 2018, UNICEF initiated the Generation Unlimited partnership globally. “An engineering degree has a validity of 18 months to 5 years. Hence, the youth today should learn agility — learn, unlearn and relearn. Soft skills — creativity, teamwork, growth mindset — are the future. This can only be learnt experientially, said Ravi Venkatesan, UNICEF representative. The programme is focused to create economic opportunities for 100 million youth through job matching and entrepreneurship. India will start skilling its youth starting from those who are ten years old

The government has said that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Wi-Fi">Wi-Fi</a> would be provided in all <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=central+universities">central universities</a> under the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). 
 
The Human Resource Development Minister<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=+Smriti+Irani"> Smriti Irani</a> has said that two <keyword id="6435699" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Central-Universities">central universities</keyword>, Allahabad University and North Eastern Hill University are already covered under Department of Electronics and Information Technology programme. 
 
For the other 38 universities, Project Approval Board of NMEICT has approved the proposal at the cost of Rs 335.85 Crores.

NEW DELHI: TV star-turned-BJP politician <keyword id="6612" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Smriti-Irani">Smriti Irani</keyword> will take on Rahul Gandhi in Amethi turning the contest into a high profile clash with Aam Aadmi Party’s Kumar Vishwas already in the fray.

 But BJP has not found a high profile candidate to contest against Congress chief <keyword id="689" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Sonia-Gandhi">Sonia Gandhi</keyword> in Rae Bareli and has settled for Ajay Agarwal, a Supreme Court advocate who has filed PILs on cases like Bofors and Telgi scams. 
 
BJP was considering pitching Uma Bharti against Sonia but the saffron leader made it clear that she did not want to leave Jhansi, where she is already contesting, and refused to budge even when she was given the option of contesting both seats. 
 
Agarwal recently protested what he alleged was a bid by BJP to field a “weak” candidate against Sonia. He has now been picked for the seat that he sought on the grounds of being a “crusader” against corruption. He is based in Ghaziabad and has been seeking the Rae Bareli ticket for some time. 
 The decision to pit Irani, a <keyword id="6364961" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Rajya-Sabha-MP">Rajya Sabha MP</keyword> seen to be close to Narendra Modi, comes after BJP decided that it should try and raise the ante against Rahul and Sonia in their boroughs that have been Gandhi bastions. 
 
The move is also based on an assessment that the going may be tougher than usual for Congress’s top duo with BJP staging a comeback in Uttar Pradesh on the back of perceived support for Modi. 
 
There is a view that given Congress’s desperate wooing of leaders like Sanjay Singh, who had threatened to switch to BJP, the party’s prospects in the two seats may not be all that robust. Singh’s wife Amita has been given a Lok Sabha ticket. 
 
Even during the previous assembly poll, Priyanka Gandhi had camped several days in the area to try and ensure a positive result.
