The recent deal signed between Australia and India that ensured sale of uranium to India and supply of conventional fuel, including coal, to help India ride over acute energy shortage, has revived debates. People are questioning in which direction India’s <keyword id="53710" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nuclear-energy">nuclear energy</keyword> policy is headed and the safety and feasibility of depending on <keyword id="43462" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nuclear-power">nuclear power</keyword> for the country’s power requirement. 
 
First, the deal signals improved thaw in the relationship between two countries that share trade worth AUD15 billion annually. It may be noted that India is the first country to buy Australian uranium without being a signatory to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. Australia seems to be convinced that India will use nuclear fuel only for non-military and peaceful purposes. 
 
The pact with Australia assume special significance after India’s attempt to forge a similar tie-up with Japan failed. Though Japanese companies produce vital reactor components and are keen to supply them to India, India’s status as a non-signatory to the non-proliferation treaty has prevented positive developments in this direction. Civil nuclear energy talks were also hit after the Fukushima disaster in 2011. 
 Secondly, the pact—which marked the culmination of talks started two years ago after Australia lifted a long-standing ban on selling uranium to power-starved India—means that India is one step closer to gaining global acceptability for its nuclear programme despite its refusal to ratify the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. The country virtually became an ‘untouchable’ when it came to global initiatives to control use of nuclear power for hostile purposes and exchange of nuclear technology after it conducted its second nuclear test in Pokhran in May 1988 (the first, code-named <keyword id="858028" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Smiling-Buddha">Smiling Buddha</keyword>, being conducted in May 1974). However, the restrictions virtually fizzled out following a US deal signed in 2008 that underlined India’s burgeoning economic weight. 
 
Critics say with two-thirds of the country’s power stations being fired by coal and more than half of them are about to run out of stock, the government should have given preference to tapping into Australia's coal reserves. Nuclear power accounts for just 3 per cent of the country’s every output, compared to 3.7 percent three years ago. In fact, nuclear energy is the fourth-leading source of energy in the country behind coal (68 per cent), gas (15 percent) and hydro (12 percent). 
 
However, with 25 percent of the country’s total population having little (or no) access to electricity, the government feels that it has to increasingly rely on nuclear power as dependence on fossil sources for energy is not sustainable as reserves get depleted at a faster pace. 
 
Nuclear energy is underpenetrated, which is amply reflected by the fact that the 20 reactors that the country operates now has a combined capacity of 4,780 MW against the target of 63,000 MW by 2032 by adding nearly 30 reactors at an estimated cost of $85 billion. In line with this target, the country has signed nuclear energy agreements with 11 countries including France, Russia and Kazakhstan from where it imports uranium. 
 
However, protest from civilian groups pose the biggest threat to government’s ambitious nuclear energy targets. Both Kudankulam nuclear power project in Tamil Nadu and the 9,900 MW Jaitapur nuclear power plant to be executed by French firm Areva are stuck due to local protests. A string of hydro-power projects are also stalled due to local opposition on the basis of environmental concerns. 
 
However, with India’s status as the second-large populous nation with more than 1.2 billion people, with enormous needs—it is already the world’s fourth-largest energy consumer, behind only the US, China and Russia—the country has no option but to try and forge similar nuclear pact with other nations or face the perilous consequence of being left out in its race for being an energy-dependant country.

Soon after the tests, former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee declared India as a ‘nuclear state’, making it the sixth country to possess nuclear weapons and the first country that was not part of the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons Treaty (NPT). It is to be noted that this is not the first time when India conducted nuclear tests. India had conducted the first nuclear tests during May 1974 as part of ‘Operation Smiling Buddha’. The day also celebrates the country’s first indigenous aircraft ‘Hansa-3’ which made its first flight in Bengaluru. India's National Technology Day is a celebration of its nuclear prowess after the Pokhran test

Hotel <keyword id="3804605" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="tibet-international-pvt-ltd">Tibet International Pvt Ltd</keyword>. Managing Director Dorje Lama Lama was born in Kathmandu, Nepal, an area that dates back to the 12th century AD, during the time of the Malla dynasty. Squeezed in-between the Tibetan plateau and the plains of China and India, Nepal has long prospered from its location as a resting place for traders, travelers and pilgrims. 
 
Growing up in this storied culture, Lama was aware of Nepal’s potential to evolve into a burgeoning metropolis with a strong hospitality sector. In recent years, young Nepalis have done just this, creating a diverse capital replete with stylish boutiques, organic restaurants featuring home-grown vegetables, nightclubs and a wildly popular “creative collaborative work space” culture that rivals that of many major cities. 
 A member of the <keyword id="3804606" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ypo-nepal">YPO Nepal</keyword> Chapter since 2014, he discusses Nepali culture, the steel girders of leadership and some of the challenges of running a hotel when the lights go out. 
 
What initially drew you to the hospitality industry? 
Between Tibet’s beautiful landscape with Mount Everest as its backdrop, the novelty of it being Lord Buddha’s birthplace and the potential of religious tourism (not to mention the fact that it is located between two growing Asian economies), I believed it was a prudent sector to invest in. 
 
Unlike many industries, a hotel must cater to people from all over the world with all manner of needs, desires and demands…how do you train your staff to accommodate? 
The mantra for our staff is, “service with a smile.” Keeping guests from across the globe from different age groups, cultures, backgrounds, languages and tastes satisfied is a Herculean task, but not impossible. Using compassion and kindness in dealing with any kind of situation or any kind of person is the best way. The human touch should never be lost. 
 
What is different about managing a hotel in Nepal than one in the UK, Argentina or the United States? 
Primarily because the hotel is situated in Nepal, we have certain issues regarding managing and running the property, which I believe other countries do not, i.e., issues with electricity (we have frequent power outages and must always have working generators) and fuel and cooking gas (we need to always maintain a good stock because they are imported from India). These things create hindrances for a smooth operation, but despite this, the country has much to offer. Hotel Tibet International was created on the foundation of Tibetan culture and hospitality, which makes you feel like you are in the most mystical place yet with familiar, smiling, faces always ready to serve and help create beautiful memories to take back home. 
 
How much do you rely on customer feedback to comprehend their experiences? 
Customer feedback is very important to us because we are in the service industry. We want to understand human needs and expectations and be able to adjust to the changing times. That is one reason I travel and become a guest myself – in order to experience the various pros and cons of a property so that I can improve service for my own guests. 
 
How do you stay on top of industry trends? 
By reading national and international newspapers and business magazines, attending conferences and seminars related to the industry and by traveling to at least one new destination every year. 
 
What is the best piece of leadership advice you have received? 
It’s not advice, but a quote I live by, “Leadership is not a position or a title, it is action and example.” –Donald McGannon 
 
What is the most difficult leadership lesson you have learned? 
A leader is nothing without a good team, and to build a loyal and efficient team demands a lot of effort and patience. To create a team that can not only work together, but trust each other, is a big challenge. 
 
What is one must read book for business leaders and why? 
“Cold Steel-Lakshmi Mittal and the Multi-Billion-Dollar Battle for a Global Empire,” by Tim Bouquet and Byron Ousey. It’s an interesting read because of the nature of steel this man is made up of; not giving up and fighting until the end is what creates a great leader. 
 
Do you have a hobby, talent or interest that might surprise people? 
I have a flair for interior decorating. 
 
If you were not in the hospitality industry, what would you be doing? 
I would be in construction. I love construction and creating properties. 
 
How has being in YPO positively affected your business or leadership? 
YPO has exposed me to a bigger scene in the business sector. It has positively motivated me to dream big and to think of the world as a playing field and not just limit myself to one place. 
 
What are the top three insights you’d like to share?

Bringing A Mystical, Hospitable Experience To Nepal

By now, it is a foregone conclusion that <keyword id="71" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Prime-Minister">Prime Minister</keyword> <keyword id="6354642" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Modi">Modi</keyword> is among the most popular politicians in the world. What makes him stand a class apart and highly regarded on the world stage? Well it is his clear cut strategy that has evolved over a period of time. Those who saw him as the Chief Minister of Gujarat have also seen the way he has moved on to different roles in the journey that has spanned across a decade and half now. 
 Modi is among those world leaders who do not wield power, but ooze the confidence and share the energy on world stage. You must believe it if reports say Modi is third-most popular person on Internet with highest number of followers on twitter, only next to Pope and American President <keyword id="15962" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Barack-Obama">Barack Obama</keyword>. No mean feat this, really. 
 
As the first anniversary of his Prime Ministership draws to a close, Modi continues to rule the roost across the world. Media isn’t his most favourite place, because he believes in being a doer, and not a mere interviewee. 
 
In a rather candid interview with none other than TIME magazine, Modi comes across as a ‘no frills’ Prime Minister who speaks of his vulnerabilities and strengths with equal confidence. That he was new to the system of federalism, and that various departments across the government structure worked like independent silos is something only Modi could have come clean on. Any other leader with a rather ‘political’ demeanor would have made an effort to appear cool and all informed about it. But, no. That isn’t Modi. He says since he did not understand it completely in the beginning, he took time to study it well and come to terms with the intricacies of a federal state. He calls it cooperative federalism. 
 
Is there another country where a leader may have had as humble a beginning as Modi’s and yet has made efforts to study things more systematically than rely on the man Fridays around? 
 
Perhaps it is an easy route for many politicians, but Modi does not believe in that. He would like to learn things by himself, so that he can ask right questions when needed. Be it his visit to the US, calling the nation as natural allies; his understanding of China, or issues that have become a thorn in the flesh of Srilanka, reaching out to Maoists and inviting them to have an exchange of thoughts – all along, Modi has proven he is here to stay for a long time. 
 
At the world stage, rebranding of Modi has happened systematically and across the board. His reaching out to Nepal soon after a massive earthquake hit that land of Buddha simply earned a lot of praise across the world. PM Modi was at his best and worked swiftly at times when the tiny neighbor needed the help. 
 
From being a Hindutva poster boy, Modi has sure come a long way on the road that leads to statesmanship. His chair may be in India, but his eyes are on the world stage. Like Shakespeare said, the world is a stage and we are all actors; Modi has mapped his next steps rather too well. 
The icon that he is, today, Modi is more approachable and highly focused. He isn’t worried about exhibiting his vulnerable side, especially when it comes to talking about his humble roots. He gets emotional, smiles and regains his composure at the blink of an eye. Modi, the statesman, is about being a ‘different’ leader who plays on the world stage. 
 
Which is why, the branding exercises have undergone a massive change. He now looms large over the horizon of world map. His trips abroad to various countries may be the butt of most jokes or criticism but Modi has a goal that is much larger than India. His ‘Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas’ is a non-sectarian approach to secularism. 
 
President Obama’s high-profile visit, the second one during Obama’s term in office, has created some sort of deep confidence among Indian people about Modi’s potential to take the country on the right road. A few elections in states may have brought some damaging results, but that’s not for Modi to worry about. He has moved far from the politics of roots, such as Sangh, or VHP or for that matter, even BJP. Today, he is almost the single handed authority to arrive at decisions on what would work with people and the kind of messaging it would send on international arena. 
 
In an interview with TIME magazine, Modi spoke of bilateral relations with over 16 countries that he managed to visit during the first year in office. The clarity and the alacrity with which he has spoken on various issues make him a leader truly in charge, and a leader India would be proud of.

"Getting off on the right foot isn't just important with relationships, it's important with the start of any workday, as well - particularly busy ones," says Michael Kerr, an international business speaker and author of "<a href="http://www.humoratwork.com/">You Can't Be Serious! Putting Humor to Work</a>." "The first 10 minutes can also set the tone and your attitude for the day - so it's imperative that you start it off right, with a clean slate."
Lynn Taylor, a national workplace expert and the author of "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Tame-Your-Terrible-Office-Tyrant/dp/0470457643/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1248186483&amp;sr=8-1">Tame Your Terrible Office Tyrant: How to Manage Childish Boss Behavior and Thrive in Your Job</a>," agrees. "Those brief moments can predict your all-important mindset because they're the first impression of your day ahead," she says. "The first few minutes at the office can be the most stressful because there's a level of anxiety about what you may face: a sudden onslaught of urgent emails; last minute crises or meetings; a call to stop by the boss's office; a cranky coworker, and so on. It takes greater self-awareness, a positive mindset, and self-training each morning to counter what feels like negative gravity pulling you down as you face overwhelming demands."
She says you can, and should, choose to proactively resist the temptation to succumb to chaos by viewing morning developments as new challenges that you're equipped to handle. "You'll have a much more positive outcome by day's end, and in general," she says. "This is how the most successful people typically start their workdays."

"Creating consistent habits is largely what makes them successful," he explains. "And a key time for habit-forming practices is at the start of the day." 
Taylor concurs. She says successful people most often follow a routine each morning to add some level of predictability to an otherwise unpredictable time of day. "They're about to face an array of new and unexpected issues, and they counter this with a strong positive mindset; a reliable, doable set of actions; discipline; and ability to focus." Once you've set a strong foundation for a productive day, you're in better stead to get meaningful results. 
Here are 13 things the most successful people do in the first 10 minutes of their workday:
1. They reflect.
Achieving your best results requires you to reflect on where you've been, where you are, and where you're going, says Taylor. "Successful people build in quiet time and solitude to do this first thing. They ask themselves: 'What did I accomplish toward my goals so far this week - or last week?' 'What is the status of my current projects?' 'What do I need to accomplish today in light of this?'"

'This may sound very 'Buddha-like,' but it's important," Kerr says. "If you arrive and walk into a tumultuous situation with phones ringing and people clambering to see you, you run the risk of starting off on the wrong foot, getting derailed both emotionally and time-wise, and letting other people set the agenda for you." Centering yourself and being fully present will help make sure you manage the day ahead, rather than allowing it to manage you.
3. They get comfortable.
Successful people take a minute at the beginning of the workday to make sure their chair is adjusted properly and the items they frequently access - keyboard, phone, computer mouse - are all in comfortable reach, Taylor says. "Ensure that you have proper lighting," she adds. "Your day will go well if you have an ergonomic environment that's functional."
4. They review their to-do list, make any necessary adjustments, and mentally map out their day. 
"This helps them remember the need to stick to the plan and focus on the things that are truly important, and not simply urgent," Kerr explains. Mentally running through their day also helps successful people visualize success, which can boost confidence levels tremendously. "It can also help you see where potential challenges may lie with how you've scheduled your day, so you can make the necessary adjustments."
They also review their calendars to assess if anything needs changing or rearranging with how their day is planned, and to see if there's any preparatory work that might need scheduling in before a call or meeting.
5. They prioritize.
A positive outcome of some big picture reflection is the ability to better prioritize your "to do" items, Taylor says. "Go beyond just making a list, and challenge yourself to create a realistic <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-prioritize-2012-12">hierarchy for your projects</a>." 
6. They stretch, stand, and walk.
Successful people make sure to stretch and get their circulation going before they get into a sedentary sitting position. "Consider walking or standing in the first few minutes of your workday," Taylor suggests. "This can give you a feeling of greater control, too, as you tackle the day's agenda - much as speakers establish authority by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/jesus-pose-key-to-powerful-speech-2014-6">standing before their audience</a>."

This is especially critical if you are a leader, Kerr says. "But no matter what role you're in, it's important." 
Taylor says visiting and checking in with your boss and team will help yourself and others kickstart the day. "To advance in your career, you just can't skimp on your people skills. You can be the most technically savvy person in the room, but your attitude can amplify or chip away at the value of your technical skills." Being friendly first thing in the morning makes the workplace more pleasant for everyone - "and your humanistic approach will be contagious."
8. They take a temperature read of their staff/coworkers.
Strong managers take a moment in the morning to talk briefly with their staff to ensure they seem engaged and motivated. "At a glance, these savvy professionals can often get a cursory reading of the energy level and job satisfaction of their staff," Taylor says. "If things seem awry, they are best tackled later on in the day."
9. They organize their workspace area.
Not being able to find things is a huge office time waster. "So while you may pride yourself on jumping into the fray with no down time, clutter will catch up to you," says Taylor. "Facing a clean or cleaner slate on your desk and desktop will better clear your mind for the day's tasks." 
10. They strategically check email. 
"I emphasize 'strategically' because email can quickly become a time-wasting, distracting quagmire," Kerr explains. "Checking email can become one of those tasks that make it feel like you are accomplishing things, wherein the danger is you are not attending to priority action items and you're letting others set your agenda."
Successful people understand this, and are extremely efficient with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/email-etiquette-rules-everyone-should-know-2014-9">email</a>, which means their first 10 minutes of the day may simply mean a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/prevent-email-from-taking-over-your-life-2014-6">quick scan and prioritizing of emails</a> to answer later as part of your pre-planned day - not necessarily diving into the entire mass at once.

We all face some of the same anticipated distractions at the start of the day. "Successful business professionals know how to mitigate them to maximize their first few minutes at their office," says Taylor. "These may include low priority calls, unnecessary optional meetings, chatty coworkers, new incoming emails or texts, social media, or other low priority notifications - all of which challenge you to focus on your day's plan."
12. They smile and laugh.
"Many successful people I know have a routine of starting their morning with a simple chuckle - whether it's from a 'joke of the day' email they subscribe to, or some tradition they've created to give themselves a chance to laugh each morning," says Kerr. "starting their day with a smile has become a must-do for them as a simple way to check their attitude and start with the right frame of mind."
Taylor notes that studies consistently show that by using your "smile muscles," your mood becomes more positive. "You don't need to create a phony smile, but a pleasant expression will have the added benefit of reminding you of your power."
13. They take a moment to be grateful. 
"A great way that successful people start their day is to identify something they're grateful for, and it may be personal or business-related," Taylor notes. "It's motivational and reminds them to put small things in perspective. 
Taylor says all successful people take advantage of the first few minutes of their workday to get grounded and focused. "Once you've adopted the right mindset and routine for success, the rest of the day flows much more smoothly."
