According to analysts, the plan to build ships with mobile nuclear power sources would raise tensions with its neighbours and pose risks to the environment. Chinese media reports described the <keyword id="21696232" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="marine-nuclear-power-platforms" source="Orion">marine nuclear power platforms</keyword> as small plants inside ships that would act as mobile "power banks" at sea for stationary facilities and other ships, VOA reported. However, Beijing had suspended the project a year ago over safety and effectiveness concerns, according to the South China Morning Post. But this month, the outgoing commander of the US Indo-Pacific Command and State Department Admiral John Aquilino said that China is still building the floating reactors to supply power to disputed islands, the Washington Post reported. Although the US officials said that the deployment of such reactors would take several years, Admiral John Aquilino said their development would undermine regional security and stability, VOA reported. Following this, last week, the Philippines echoed those concerns. Philippines National Security Council Assistant Director General Jonathan Malaya said that China would use its floating reactors to power military bases it has built on artificial islands, including those within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone. He added that China's nuclear plants would further militarize disputed areas of the South China Sea. "Anything that supports their military presence in those islands is technically a threat to our national security and against our interests," he said, adding that Australia and the US would be among Manila's allies conducting joint patrols in the South China Sea, as reported by VOA. According to Beijing's claims, they have control over almost the entire South China Sea, putting it in dispute with Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam. Moreover, China has already built artificial islands with airport runways to strengthen its claims. The analysts said that Beijing's floating reactors would not only strengthen its military presence in the area but also give it an excuse to extend its reach through security actions, VOA reported. Song Yanhui, director of the International Law Society of the Republic of China, Taiwan, said that the current military security zone for China's artificial islands is a radius of 500 meters (1,640 feet), which means, other aircraft and ships that enter this radius can be legitimately expelled. Song continued that if China deploys a floating nuclear power plant in the South China Sea, it could use the excuse of protecting the environment from radioactive pollution to drive away ships from a larger area or to take defensive measures. For Beijing, he said, "It kills two birds with one stone. It is a win-win strategy. It can strengthen its military presence, civilian use and claim to sovereignty." But the potential for radiation leaks is a real concern, analysts said, reported VOA. Pankaj Jha, dean of research at the School of International Affairs of India's Jindal Global University, highlighted that China's lack of experience in operating such floating reactors could spell disaster. "It is a threat because it will contaminate water and also surrounding areas," he said. "Any radiation leak would make the island uninhabitable and might also impact fishermen from the South China Sea." In the event of a conflict with China, the analysts further noted that the floating reactors could also become military targets, reported VOA. China has deployed radars, anti-ship and anti-aircraft missiles, and fighter jets, among other weapons, on the disputed territories of Mischief Reef, Subi Reef and Fiery Cross, the three largest artificial islands in the Spratly Islands. Richard Fisher, senior fellow with the International Assessment and Strategy Center, stressed that floating nuclear power plants could also one day extend China's weapons capabilities. "If they were protected, these nuclear power plants could also potentially power future energy weapon devices," Fisher said. "Laser weapons that could knock down missiles and aircraft or very powerful microwave weapons could also disable missiles and aircraft that would get within their range." Notably, China is not the first country to think of building floating nuclear reactors. The US took the lead in proposing the concept in 1970 but due to safety concerns, they did not quickly pursue development, reported VOA. Meanwhile, Russia is the only country that has brought a floating nuclear power plant to fruition, with the Akademik Lomonosov plant producing electricity and heating since 2020 from a harbour in Pevek, a town in the Arctic Circle. Earlier in November last year, the International Atomic Energy Agency at a forum in Vienna expressed concern about the development of floating nuclear reactors, particularly when they cross international borders or operate in international waters. "The IAEA is working with our member states to determine what further guidance and standards might be needed to ensure the safety of floating nuclear power plants," IAEA Deputy Director General Lydie Evrard said in a press release. "At Rs 1,189 crore, growing 31 per cent YoY (year-on-year), the company reported its highest ever and 19th consecutive quarter of PAT growth on the back of strong operational performance and execution excellence across all its businesses of generation, transmission &amp; distribution, and renewables," Tata Power said in a statement. According to the statement, these businesses contributed 84 per cent of the PAT (net profit) in Q1FY25, compared to 72 per cent in the same period in FY24. The statement showed that the consolidated net profit before exceptional items was Rs 906 crore in the quarter ended June 30, 2023. The company's revenue rose 12 per cent YoY to a record high of Rs 16,810 crore (from Rs 15,003 crore in Q1 FY24), and EBITDA grew 11 per cent to Rs 3,350 crore in the reported quarter (from Rs 3,005 crore in Q1 FY24). EBITDA refers to earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization. "All our businesses have grown profitably on the back of operational efficiency, execution excellence, and sustained business momentum," said Praveer Sinha, CEO and Managing Director, Tata Power. He informed that the planned capex for this financial year is Rs 20,000 crore and the company is committed to adopting and leading the new and emerging clean energy technologies, including pumped hydro projects, hydropower projects in Bhutan, and opportunities to develop small modular nuclear reactors as the government policy evolves. The company has recorded a capex investment of Rs 4,000 crore in Q1FY25. Tata Power net profit up 31% to ₹1,189 crore in June quarter

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday announced a cut in customs duty on minerals such as lithium, copper and cobalt, which are critical for nuclear energy, renewable and other sectors, to give a fillip to the energy transition. In her budget speech in Lok Sabha, Sitharaman recalled that in the interim budget she had announced a strategy to sustain high and more resource-efficient economic growth, along with energy security in terms of availability, accessibility and affordability. "We will bring out a policy document on appropriate energy transition pathways that balances the imperatives of employment, growth and environmental sustainability," she said. Noting that minerals such as lithium, copper, cobalt and rare earth elements are critical for sectors like nuclear energy, <keyword id="19895602" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="renewable-energy" source="keywords">renewable energy</keyword>, space, defence, telecommunications, and high-tech electronics, she proposed to fully exempt customs duties on 25 critical minerals and reduce BCD (basic customs duty) on two of them. This will provide a major fillip to the processing and refining of such minerals and help secure their availability for these strategic and important sectors, she said. She stated that energy transition is critical in the fight against climate change. To support energy transition, she proposed to expand the list of exempted capital goods for use in the manufacture of solar cells and panels in the country. Further, she stated that in view of sufficient domestic manufacturing capacity of solar glass and tinned copper interconnect, I propose not to extend the exemption of customs duties provided to them. Noting that steel and copper are important raw materials and to reduce their cost of production, she proposed to remove the BCD on ferro nickel and blister copper. "I am also continuing with nil BCD on ferrous scrap and nickel cathode and concessional BCD of 2.5 per cent on copper scrap," she said. About the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, which was rolled out earlier this year, he informed the House that in line with the announcement in the interim budget, PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana has been launched to install rooftop solar plants to enable 1 crore households obtain free electricity up to 300 units every month. The scheme has generated remarkable response with more than 1.28 crore registrations and 14 lakh applications, and we will further encourage it, he stated. She further stated that a policy for promoting pumped storage projects will be brought out for electricity storage and facilitating smooth integration of the growing share of renewable energy with its variable &amp; intermittent nature in the overall energy mix. She stated that nuclear energy is expected to form a very significant part of the energy mix for Viksit Bharat. A roadmap for moving the 'hard to abate' industries from 'energy efficiency' targets to 'emission targets' will be formulated, she stated adding that appropriate regulations for the transition of these industries from the current 'Perform, Achieve and Trade' mode to 'Indian Carbon Market' mode will be put in place. FM cuts customs duty on minerals critical for energy transition

The company plans to bring the nuclear plant online in 2030, he added.TerraPower, which has raised $1 billion from backers, will use liquid sodium rather than water to cool its Natrium reactors, making them cheaper to run. Most of the initial work at the Kemmerer site won't be related to nuclear activity, Levesque said. "When you use liquid sodium as a coolant instead of water it's a game changer," he told the FT."Natrium plants will cost half of what light water reactor plants cost … and we are moving our project along pretty aggressively."Gates helped found TerraPower in 2006 and has been its chairman since then. After arriving in Bengaluru, Johnson is set to visit Pune to meet investors and leading Indian businesses, including Infosys and Zensar, to drum up investor interest in the UK, the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) said. The visit coincides with Round 9 of negotiations this week between officials working on the UK-India free trade agreement (FTA). "It is fantastic to be in India again visiting the vibrant cities of Pune and Bengaluru to find out how our strong cultural and economic ties mean investors and business leaders continue to choose the UK," said Johnson. He visited Mumbai and New Delhi in October last year when he met with investors and businesses including Apollo Hospitals, Prodapt and Wockhardt. "From life sciences to AI [artificial intelligence], now is the time to invest in the UK as we are determined to be the undisputed number one investment destination in Europe," he said. On the eve of the ministerial visit, the DBT described India as a "priority market" for the UK with Johnson's visit seen as helping to build momentum behind the ongoing FTA negotiations between the two countries. India was the UK's 12th largest trading partner in the four quarters to the end of Q3 2022, accounting for 2.1 per cent of total UK trade. UK investment minister Jo Johnson begins India visit with focus on tech ties

Plus, the solid waste from providing you that energy would also be the size of a lollipop.That's the advantage of nuclear power, Gary Was, a nuclear engineering professor emeritus at the University of Michigan, wrote in a 2020 paper published in the journal "New Labor Forum." "The energy density [of nuclear power] is just phenomenal compared to fossil fuels or renewables," Was told Insider. "It's a huge amount of energy from just a tiny, tiny volume."<keyword id="12188569" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="nuclear-energy" source="Orion">Nuclear energy</keyword> currently accounts for about 20% of all power in the US. Natural gas still outpaces nuclear, accounting for roughly 40%, while a mix of coal, hydroelectric, and other renewables make up the rest, <a href="https://www.eia.gov/energyexplained/nuclear/us-nuclear-industry.php">according to US government data</a>. But experts say that relying more on nuclear power could reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, especially as Russia's invasion of Ukraine continues to <a href="https://www.cfr.org/in-brief/could-nuclear-power-cut-europes-dependence-russian-energy">roil the global energy markets</a>. Widely considered a clean, cheap, and reliable alternative to fuels like oil, gas, and coal, nuclear could be the answer to our problems — but decades of rising costs and roadblocks still stand in the way. <h2>How nuclear power plants became so expensive to build </h2><div type="image" title="Three Mile Island shortly after meltdown in 1979 with police car and person passing in front" height="1642" width="2190" msid="90715350" hostid="261"></div>Nuclear power plants began cropping up in the US in the 1960s. Back then, they were cheap to build. By some measures, building a nuclear plant was cheaper than building a modern gas plant, <a href="https://www.vox.com/2016/2/29/11132930/nuclear-power-costs-us-france-korea">according to Vox</a>. But over time, nuclear power plants became more expensive for a variety of reasons: The plants are constructed on site, which can be costly and time-consuming; there's no standard design used by the entire industry; and government regulations around security and staffing have made the plants significantly more expensive to operate, Was said. These days, there are 28 states with at least one commercial nuclear reactor and most of them are east of the Mississippi River. Illinois leads the US with 11 reactors at six plants throughout the state — two new reactors are under construction in Georgia, though those, too, are <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/southern-delays-startup-new-georgia-nuclear-reactors-boosts-costs-2022-02-17/">experiencing delays and mounting costs</a>.<h2>The possibility of a meltdown</h2><div type="image" title="Employees walk past damaged reactor building at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant" height="1662" width="2217" msid="90715353" hostid="261"></div>What critics often point to as the biggest risk of nuclear power is radioactive waste.The total amount of waste is "very, very small," Was said — in fact, all the used fuel produced by the nuclear industry would only cover the length and width of a football field and reach about 10 yards high.But the fact remains that the waste is highly radioactive. The federal government had planned to create a permanent site to store all the waste in Yucca Mountain, Nevada, but <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/12/18/nuclear-waste-why-theres-no-permanent-nuclear-waste-dump-in-us.html">political maneuvering derailed the plan</a>. For now, waste is stored at nuclear plants across the country, which experts say will work for another 100 years or so. And then, of course, there's the possibility of a reactor melting down. In 1979, an equipment malfunction caused a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-happened-three-mile-island-worst-us-nuclear-disaster-2019-8">partial meltdown at Three Mile Island</a> in Pennsylvania. No one at the plant was killed, and scientific studies in the decades since have been <a href="https://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/doc-collections/fact-sheets/3mile-isle.html">unable to find any long-term health impacts.</a>In 2011, an earthquake and tsunami led to a meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi plant in Japan — the meltdown resulted in one radiation-related death, <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-45423575">the Japanese government announced</a> in 2018. A <a href="https://www.who.int/news-room/questions-and-answers/item/health-consequences-of-fukushima-nuclear-accident">2016 World Health Organization report</a> said the workers who were most exposed to radiation have an increased cancer risk, but that the risk to the population surrounding the plant is small. A <a href="https://www.unscear.org/docs/publications/2020/UNSCEAR_2020_AnnexB_AdvanceCopy.pdf">2020 United Nations report</a> found that there have been no adverse health effects among local residents in the decade since the meltdown. Still, the Fukushima accident in particular was a public relations disaster for the nuclear power movement and led governments around the world to curtail their nuclear programs.Gregory Jaczko, the former chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, wrote in <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/i-oversaw-the-us-nuclear-power-industry-now-i-think-it-should-be-banned/2019/05/16/a3b8be52-71db-11e9-9eb4-0828f5389013_story.html">a Washington Post op-ed</a> in 2019 that the meltdown led him to leave the nuclear industry altogether."Despite working in the industry for more than a decade, I now believe that nuclear power's benefits are no longer enough to risk the welfare of people living near these plants," he wrote. "The current and potential costs — in lives and dollars — are just too high."<h2>'A rock-solid source of electricity' </h2><div type="image" title="Steam rises from nuclear plant surrounded by wind turbines" height="1541" width="2056" msid="90715354" hostid="261"></div>The <a href="https://www.npr.org/2022/01/18/1073726137/the-us-is-divided-over-whether-nuclear-power-is-part-of-the-green-energy-future">clean energy community is divided</a> on whether nuclear power should be a key part of our future energy mix. But Michigan's Was told Insider that nuclear is essential because it's the most reliable energy source we have. Nuclear power plants operate at 100% capacity about 93% of the time, according to <a href="https://www.energy.gov/ne/articles/nuclear-power-most-reliable-energy-source-and-its-not-even-close">US government data</a>, making them more reliable then wind and solar, and even natural gas and coal. "These things have been just sort of a rock-solid source of electricity for us for at this level for probably 20 years now," Was said. "They've quietly been building up an extremely impressive history of providing 100% CO2-free electricity to this country, and that's something that if you stand up and take note of it, you gotta ask the question, well, what else do we have that can do that?" That sentiment is gaining traction in the startup world where companies like <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/nuscale-to-go-public-via-merger-with-spac-spring-valley-acquisition-in-deal-valued-at-about-$1-9-billion-10842276">NuScale</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bill-gates-terrapower-wyoming-coal-town-natrium-nuclear-power-plant-2021-11">TerraPower</a>, which is founded and backed by <keyword id="45830" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="bill-gates" source="Orion">Bill Gates</keyword>, are experimenting with smaller or more modular reactors that cost less to build. Gates <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/02/25/bill-gates-nuclear-power-will-absolutely-be-politically-acceptable.html">told CNBC's Andrew Ross Sorkin</a> last year that he sees a future where reliance on nuclear power will "absolutely" be politically palatable."As we solve these engineering problems and cost problems," he said, "I hope people will be open-minded to see how incredibly safe the next generation will be."

Nuclear power could transform the US energy grid — but decades of roadblocks and rising prices are standing in the way

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Nearly 50 years after its first flight, the <keyword id="59059" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="F-16">F-16</keyword> remains in service with air forces around the world.</li><li>The <keyword id="6404246" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="us-air-force">US Air Force</keyword> was set to get rid of its F-16s in the coming decade, but delays on its new fighters mean the <keyword id="10788762" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="fighting-falcon">Fighting Falcon</keyword> will fly on.</li></ul>February 2 was the 47th anniversary of the first official test flight for the F-16 Fighting Falcon.Designed by General Dynamics in the 1970s, the Falcon - or the Viper, as it is commonly and affectionately known by its American pilots - quickly became one of the best fighter jets in history.Its lightweight, powerful engines, and groundbreaking electronics gave it an edge over almost all of its contemporary adversaries. Its modular airframe proved so adaptable that over a dozen different versions of the fighter have been made since its first flight.About 4,600 F-16s have <a href="https://www.airforcemag.com/lockheed-new-demand-for-f-16s-could-push-type-past-5000-mark/" target="_top">been built</a> since 1974, and the fighter is currently in service with 26 countries.<h2>The 'fighter mafia'</h2><div type="image" title="Air Force F-16 YF-16 YF-17" height="1500" width="2000" msid="81101293" hostid="261"></div>The F-16 came about as a result of requests from a group known as the "fighter mafia," a group of Air Force officers and civilian defense analysts who were unsatisfied with the performance of the F-4 Phantom II in Vietnam, and believed that the Air Force's emphasis on larger, heavier fighters armed only with missiles was a mistake.What was needed, they argued, was a cost-effective <keyword id="70380" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Fighter-jet">fighter jet</keyword> that was small, lightweight, fast, and highly maneuverable. The need for a cheaper and lighter fighter grew when the operating costs of the new F-15 became apparent.In 1969, after intense lobbying, the group was able to secure funding for the Lightweight Fighter program. By 1974, two prototype models from two companies were shown to the Air Force: the YF-16 from General Dynamics and the YF-17 from Northrop Grumman.The YF-16 was selected as the winner in 1975, though the YF-17 would eventually see service with the Navy and Marine Corps as the F/A-18. By 1980, F-16s were in service with the US Air Force as well as with NATO members Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway.<h2>A modern design</h2><div type="image" title="Air Force F-16 fighter jet canopy pilot cockpit" height="1200" width="1800" msid="81101294" hostid="261"></div>The Falcon featured a number of new technologies and systems that put it above its competitors. Its engine could push it to twice the speed of sound, and the cropped delta wings gave it incredible maneuverability, including the ability to pull 9g turns - the first US fighter to do so.The bubble canopy gave the pilot unobstructed forward and upward vision and improved side and rear vision. The cockpit seat-back angle, set at 30 degrees instead of the usual 13, increased pilot comfort and gravity force tolerance, enabling high-g turns and maneuvers.The F-16 was the first production aircraft to replace manual flight controls with a digital "fly-by-wire" system, increasing response time and pilot control. It also featured side-stick controls with a hands-on throttle-and-stick set up, giving better ergonomics and allowing the pilot to fly and perform multiple functions at the same time.Brand-new radar systems and electronics, like concurrent head-mounted and heads-up display, enabled pilots to track and engage enemy aircraft quickly and efficiently with its large arsenal: up to 17,000 pounds of air-to-air missiles and bombs mounted on 11 hardpoints, as well as a 20 mm Vulcan rotary cannon.<h2>A long service record</h2><div type="image" title="Israeli F-16" height="1362" width="2000" msid="81101295" hostid="261"></div>The F-16's combat debut was with the Israeli Air Force, shooting down a pair of Syrian Mi-8 helicopters in April 1981 and a MiG-21 in July that year.On June 7, 1981, the Israelis showed the F-16 could conduct airstrikes, when, during <a href="https://www.timesofisrael.com/38-years-later-pilots-recall-how-iran-inadvertently-enabled-osiraq-reactor-raid/" target="_top">Operation Opera</a>, they destroyed Iraq's unfinished Osirak nuclear reactor. In <a href="https://theaviationgeekclub.com/operation-drugstore-when-iaf-fighters-shot-down-88-syrian-aircraft-during-air-battles-over-the-bekaa-valley/" target="_top">one engagement</a> in 1982, during the Lebanese Civil War, Israeli F-16s shot down 44 Syrian aircraft, 11 more than the Israeli F-15s that took part in the battle.The F-16 saw combat in American service for the first time during Operation Desert Storm in 1991, when 249 Air Force F-16s <a href="https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/gulf/appendix/whitepaper.html" target="_top">flew</a> over 13,000 sorties, more than any other aircraft during the campaign. Only seven were lost, three to enemy fire.The Desert Storm missions were mostly airstrikes, but American F-16s did score their first air-to-air kills during the ensuing Operation Southern Watch, downing a MiG-25 in December 1992 and a MiG-23 in January 1993.US F-16s have seen action in Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Libya. F-16s in service with other countries have flown combat missions over Lebanon, Pakistan, Syria, Venezuela, and Yemen.F-16s are also seen regularly over the <a href="https://theaviationist.com/2020/09/05/portuguese-f-16s-deployed-to-malbork-poland-for-nato-enhanced-baltic-air-policing/" target="_top">Baltic</a> and <a href="https://www.airforcemag.com/inside-natos-enhanced-air-policing-mission/" target="_top">Black Sea</a> as part of NATO's air-policing operations and over the <a href="https://www.military.com/daily-news/2021/01/24/us-reaffirms-taiwan-support-after-china-sends-warplanes.html" target="_top">Taiwan Strait</a>, where Taiwan regularly scrambles its F-16s to intercept Chinese military aircraft.<h2>Future fighters</h2><div type="image" title="Taiwan air force F-16 fighter jet" height="932" width="1400" msid="81101296" hostid="261"></div>About 1,300 F-16s are in service with the US Air Force, and the jet is still loved by its pilots.The Air Force originally planned to retire its F-16s in 2025, but budget constraints and the slow delivery of its intended replacement, the F-35, forced the service to initiate a Service Life Extension Program for its F-16s, enabling the fighters to fly until at least 2048.The Air Force is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-air-force-is-considering-buying-new-f16-fighter-jets-2021-2" target="_top">reportedly</a> interested in buying brand new F-16s, as both F-16s and F-15EXs were in the service's fiscal year 2023 budget request. These would be the first new F-16s to enter US service since 2005.F-16s are still being built for <keyword id="6356001" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="international">international</keyword> customers, and "that system has some wonderful upgraded capabilities that are worth thinking about as part of our capacity solution," Will Roper, former assistant secretary of the Air Force for acquisition, <a href="https://aviationweek.com/defense-space/aircraft-propulsion/us-air-force-talks-new-f-16-orders-latest-acquisition-shake" target="_top">told Aviation Week</a> in January.It is not known what type of F-16 the Air Force may buy.
