Indian states are finally experiencing signs of the winter’s arrival, marked by noticeable weather shifts across various regions. The <keyword id="19897673" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India-Meteorological-Department" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="India Meteorological Department" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="India Meteorological Department">India Meteorological Department</keyword> (IMD) reports that northern parts of the country, including Jammu &amp; Kashmir, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi, have started seeing foggy mornings. Alongside this, a gradual dip in maximum and minimum temperatures has been observed. Amid the delayed winter, IMD has forecast neutral El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) conditions prevail over the equatorial Pacific, with below-average sea surface temperatures in the east equatorial region. Recent models also suggest the possibility of <keyword id="624823" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="La-Nia" source="Orion">La Niña</keyword> emerging during the post-monsoon season. La Niña, meaning "Little Girl" in Spanish, is usually associated with cooler-than-average sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific and especially severe winters. It typically strengthens between October and February, potentially leading to harsher winters and heavier rainfall, which could impact agriculture, especially in regions reliant on winter crops. However, the La Niña is expected to be remarkably weak this time around. “Due to climate change, normal temperatures are already elevated, and the La Niña anomaly isn’t sustaining itself,” explained OP Sreejith, head of climate monitoring at the IMD. Its mild intensity could translate to a warmer-than-usual winter for India, especially in northern regions. La Niña can only be officially confirmed if the Oceanic Niño Index drops consistently to at least -0.5°C, a condition not yet met this year. Forecasters, including the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), had anticipated a clearer shift to La Niña by mid-year, but predictions fell short. This “spooky weather,” as described in NOAA’s latest blog, reflects the challenges of predicting precise ENSO patterns amid changing climate dynamics. La Niña conditions to take hold post-monsoon; models predict weak winter in North India

<keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> is expected to experience a '<keyword id="43788" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="normal" source="Orion">normal</keyword>' <keyword id="6358301" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="monsoon" source="Orion">monsoon</keyword> between June and September this year according to private <keyword id="6359992" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="weather" source="Orion">weather</keyword> forecasting agency Skymet which on Tuesday said that <keyword id="165344" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="monsoon-rains" source="Orion">monsoon rains</keyword> are expected to be 102 per cent of the long-period average (LPA) of 868.6 mm for the four month period. From June to September, there will be above-normal rains over central and western parts. There will be normal rains over northern and southern parts and below normal rains over North-east India and Eastern parts, the weather forecaster said. The '<keyword id="142964" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="monsoon-forecast" source="Orion">Monsoon Forecast</keyword> 2024' report suggests that India will experience favourable rainfall in the South, West, and Northwest regions of India. Core monsoon rainfed areas like Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh are expected to receive adequate rainfall. However, eastern states including Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and West Bengal face the risk of deficit rainfall during peak monsoon months, while Northeast India may experience below-normal rains in the first half of the season. There will be above-normal rains over Kerala, Konka, Karnataka and Goa, and normal rains over central parts, Skymet said. "The significant transition from Super El Nino to strong La Nina has historically tended to produce a decent monsoon," said Jatin Singh, MD, Skymet. Singh said, "However monsoon season may start with a risk of impairment, attributable to the remnant effects of El Nino. The second half of the season will have an overwhelming edge over the primal phase". The Skymet report highlights that apart from the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO), other factors such as the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) also influence the monsoon. The report suggests a positive IOD, which is expected to complement La Nina, enhancing the prospects of a better monsoon. The rapid transition from El Nino to La Nina is anticipated to disrupt the onset of the season, while rainfall distribution throughout the season may be uneven. Geographically, the report predicts favourable rainfall in the South, West, and Northwest regions of India. Core monsoon rainfed areas like Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh are expected to receive adequate rainfall. However, eastern states including Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and West Bengal face the risk of deficit rainfall during peak monsoon months, while Northeast India may experience below-normal rains in the first half of the season. According to the report, the monsoon probabilities for June to September indicate a 10 per cent chance of excess rainfall, a 45 per cent chance of normal rainfall, with a 20 per cent chance of both above-normal, 15 per cent chance of below-normal rainfall, and a 10 per cent chance of drought conditions. On a monthly scale, June is forecast to receive 95 per cent of the LPA, July 105 per cent, August 98 per cent, and September 110 per cent. Despite the challenges posed by transitioning climatic conditions, the report predicts a normal monsoon season this year.

India likely to experience normal monsoon this year: Skymet

The southwest monsoon reached the Indian mainland on Thursday, a week later than it normally does, with the <keyword id="6355166" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india-meteorological-department" source="Orion">India Meteorological Department</keyword> declaring its onset over <keyword id="28504" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="kerala" source="Orion">Kerala</keyword>. Meteorologists earlier said Cyclone '<keyword id="13860733" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="biparjoy" source="Orion">Biparjoy</keyword>' had been impacting the intensity of the monsoon and that its onset over Kerala would be "mild". In a statement on Thursday, the <keyword id="6366970" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="imd" source="Orion">IMD</keyword> said, "The southwest monsoon has set in over Kerala today, June 8." "The monsoon has advanced into remaining parts of south Arabian Sea and some parts of central Arabian Sea, entire Lakshadweep area, most parts of Kerala, most parts of south <keyword id="20154" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tamil-nadu" source="Orion">Tamil Nadu</keyword>, remaining parts of Comorin area, Gulf of Mannar and some more parts of southwest, central and northeast Bay of Bengal today," it added. The southwest monsoon normally sets in over Kerala on June 1 with a standard deviation of about seven days. In mid-May, the IMD said the monsoon might arrive in Kerala by June 4. Skymet had predicted the monsoon onset over Kerala on June 7, with an error margin of three days. IMD declares monsoon onset over Kerala

Jatin Singh, managing director of Skymet, told Reuters that India would receive, “93% rainfall of the long period average in 2019.” Singh added that central India would get 91% of the average rainfall while eastern India would get 92%. South India, meanwhile, should get 95% of the average. Skymet’s prediction clashes with forecasts from the government-run India Meteorological Department (IMD), which said last month that there would be average rainfall this season - which provided <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/stocks/news/sensex-rises-139-points-nifty-at-11690-tata-motors-tcs-rally/articleshow/68889490.cms">a strong boost to stock markets</a> the day it was announced. Latest monsoon projection may take the wind out of India's markets

In contrast to its earlier prediction, private weather forecaster Skymet stated it might revise its forecast as rains across country stood 32% below average. 
 
Vice-president, meteorology at Skymet, GP Sharma said that by July-end, they might come with a revised forecast for the season and the months of August and September. 
 The forecaster had earlier forecast above normal monsoon rains this year while most other forecasters, including the official <keyword id="6355166" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="India-Meteorological-Department">India Meteorological Department</keyword> (IMD), predicted less than normal rains. 
 
However, he said that Skymet would not bring its forecast down, adding that he didn't expect July rains to be 104% of normal as forecasted earlier. 
 
"It will surely be in the minus side. But considering there is a margin error of ± 9 per cent in the monthly forecast, we are not wrong in our forecast," Sharma told Economic Times. 
 
The financial daily reported that as of July 15, the monthly monsoon rains across the country were 32% below average while the deficit for the whole season stood at 6%. 
 
Skymet says that monsoon rains will be 102% of its Long Period Average (LPA) this year, whereas IMD predicted only 88% of the average. 
 
"Northwestern India is the only region which has a cumulative rain surplus till now. We expect some improvement in the second half of July, but the deficit will prevail,” DS Pai, head of long-range forecasting at IMD, told ET. 
 
IMD is expected to release its next forecast on July 31. It has forecast July rainfall over the country to be 92% of its LPA. 
 
"Rainfall deficit for the country in July is 44 mm. We should get 12-13 mm rain daily to catch up with the normal," Skymet's Sharma told ET. 
 
He added that monsoons could spring a surprise anytime. "Heavy widespread monsoon showers for a few days can wipe out the deficit as happened in the previous year. Monsoon rains were 40% below normal across India till July 15 in 2014 and with spell of heavy rains the deficit came down to 22% by the month end," Sharma told the financial daily. 
 
Meanwhile, Skymet expects August rains to be 99% of the average with good rainfall in the first ten days of the month.

Monsoon to hit Kerala tomorrow, heatwave in Northern India to last another week

The <keyword id="55209" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Indian-Meteorological-Department">Indian Meteorological Department</keyword> (IMD) said the southwest monsoon had arrived in Kerala against the normal date of June 1. 
 
"The rainfall over Kerala has been fairly widespread to widespread for the last 48 hours. Out of the 14 rainfall monitoring stations for monsoon onset over Kerala, more than 70% of stations have reported rainfall higher than 2.5 mm for last consecutive two days," IMD said in its statement. 
 
IMD said monsoon has further advanced into entire south Arabian Sea, some parts of Central Arabian Sea, entire Lakshadweep area and Kerala, some parts of Coastal &amp; South Interior Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, remaining parts of southeast Bay of Bengal and some parts of central &amp; northeast Bay of Bengal. 
 As IMD as predicted a deficient monsoon this year, private weather forecaster <keyword id="6376779" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Skymet">Skymet</keyword> rejected IMD's forecast of likely drought. 
 
Skymet predicted that there would be a good monsoon season this year as the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) phenomenon counters an El Nino weather event. 
 
This should dismiss concerns of farmers who have already been hit hard by unseasonal rains earlier this year. 
 
Skymet, which claims its predictions have been correct for the past three years, forecast rains at 102% of the long-term average over the June-September monsoon season, as against IMD's 88%. 
 
Skymet’s chief meteorologist, G.P. Sharma, said the El Nino threat remains, but the positive IOD effect could prove beneficial. 
 
Skymet said positive IOD creates a barrier in the eastern Indian Ocean and all the southwesterly winds blow towards the Indian sub-continent, causing rains there but leading to droughts in parts of Indonesia and Australia. 
Even Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has downplayed fears of a drought. 
Meanwhile, the Indian Government prepared on war footing to implement the MNREGA plans so that livelihood of farmer is not affected.

Private weather forecaster Skymet rejects drought forecast in India

The much-awaited Southwest <keyword id="6358301" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="monsoon">Monsoon</keyword> finally arrived in Delhi Tuesday morning bringing respite from scorching heat, with weather officials saying the onset has been 16 days behind the usual date, making it the most delayed in <keyword id="2351148" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="19-years">19 years</keyword>. In 2002, the monsoon had covered Delhi on July 19. Mahesh Palawat of Skymet Weather, a private forecasting agency, said the monsoon made a "weak onset" over Delhi and only patchy rainfall is predicted in the city over the next three days. He said the monsoon trough, which ran along the foothills of the Himalayas, has now shifted over the central parts of India due to low-pressure systems over the Bay of Bengal and Gujarat. "After the low-pressure systems dissipate in two to three days, the monsoon trough will again shift towards north, increasing rainfall in the region," he said. The weather department has had a tough time forecasting the advance of monsoon over Delhi this year. After several wayward forecasts, the IMD Monday acknowledged that "such type of failure by numerical models in the prediction of monsoon over the capital is rare and uncommon". The IMD had earlier said monsoon would hit Delhi on June 15, which would have been 12 days early, but the wind system entered a "break" phase. In early June, the <keyword id="6410326" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="met">Met</keyword> office said the conditions will become favourable for the monsoon to advance to Delhi and other parts of northwest India by July 7. Later, it said Delhi will get its first monsoon rains around July 10. The weather department revised the forecast yet again on Saturday, saying the monsoon may reach the capital in the next 24 hours. But it kept the city waiting on Sunday and there was hardly any rainfall on Monday too. According to Kuldeep Srivastava, the head of the IMD's regional forecasting centre, the monsoon had reached the capital on July 7 in 2012 and on July 9 in 2006. "In 2002, Delhi received its first monsoon showers on July 19. The city had recorded the most-delayed monsoon arrival on July 26 in 1987," he said. Central Delhi is the most rain-deficient district in the country this monsoon, receiving only 8.5 mm rainfall against the normal of 132 mm since June 1, when the season starts. It has recorded a shortfall of 94 per cent. Overall, Delhi has so far received 67 per cent less rainfall than normal, putting it in the category of "large deficient" states. Despite predictions of an above normal <keyword id="6358301" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Monsoon">monsoon</keyword> so far, Agriculture Ministry has been asked to take care of any situation if rains remain deficient, Minister of Science &amp; Technology Y S Chowdary said today. 

	"Government is ready with contingency plan in some states. We have already informed the Agriculture Ministry to take care (of that). And by and large is it very positive now," Chowdary said on the sidelines of an event organised by Yes Bank promoted Yes Institute that works towards attracting funds for social innovation. 

	"Monsoon definitely not only revived but it is very encouraging. In few pockets, there may have some issues but across the country it is going to be very good,” he added. 
 Meanwhile, <keyword id="6355166" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="India-Meteorological-Department">India Meteorological Department</keyword> (IMD) has predicted deficient rains for the June-September season this year. However, private firm <keyword id="6376779" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Skymet">Skymet</keyword> has predicted an above normal monsoon. 

	Chowdary said the Ministry has many areas under its ambit, including power saving, solar, structural design, green energy and landscape. 
 

	"In the Ministry, we have many areas, power saving, solar, structural design, all these areas are very crucial. We can participate in many areas from green energy to landscape. Our Ministry has a very broad spectrum,” he said. 
 

	The Minister also said that the government is thinking of connecting with various countries on a collaborative working model to work towards these goals.

 Mumbai, India's financial capital, witnessed over above 200 mm rainfall in 24 hours on Friday. While the rest of the country is reeling through dry spell, the average rainfall in Mumbai in June was above its long-term average, according to Skymet. Heavy rains on Sunday night caused water logging and traffic snarls, slowing down one the metropolis on Monday (July 1). "A monsoon depression movement will be approaching near Maharashtra and the Konkan coast so we could get a little heavier spells, little respite in between before we have the next one again," GP Sharma, vice president of meteorology, <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/expert-view/monsoon-gains-second-wind-after-driest-june-expect-heavy-downpour-in-july-gp-sharma/articleshow/70025756.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">Skymet told a television channel</a> on Monday. Mumbai must brace for floods this week, says a private weather forecaster

Untimely shower in April is definitely taking a toll on the fresh sows in the northern parts of India. The ravi harvest in North and West India including onions in Maharashtra have been badly affected due to unseasonal rain and storm. However, a recent survey by a <keyword id="2808232" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="private-weather-forecaster">private weather forecaster</keyword> comes as a breather for the farmers. The <keyword id="6376779" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Skymet">Skymet</keyword> conducted survey points out that that the country will receive normal rains during the June-September monsoon season. 
 
As per a news report by The Economic Times, the government's India Meteorological department (IMD) is expected to forecast on the same by April 23. Local authorities use IMD's prediction to decide on their monsoon preparations. However, global forecasters are of opinion that 2015 in Indian agriculture might be largely impacted bby El Nino. El Nino has a history of adversely impacting monsoon rain. In the past decade, 2002, 2004 and 2009 were drought years due to the phenomenon 
"2014-15 has become an El Nino year as the Oceanic Nino index has crossed the threshold value of 0.5 for five consecutive times since September 2014 till March end. We expect it to last till May 2015 and thereafter go down, thereby not making any impact on Indian monsoon," GP Sharma, vice-president of meteorology at Skymet told the ET. 
 
Skymet expects a few dry patches in parts of northwest, central and south India but on the whole it is optimistic of normal rains in 2015. In its March forecast it has said that the monsoon rainfall might be 102 per cent of long-period average for the period June to September. 
As per the news report in the financial daily, average rainfall over India for June-September would be 89 cm. The long-term average is the average rainfall for the past 50 years. A deviation of up to 4 per cent on both sides is considered as normal. Anything beyond 10 per cent is excess rainfall, or drought. 
 
DS Pai, head of the long range forecast at IMD told the ET, that they were analysing the latest forecast and by April 22-23 come with their first forecast for the Indian monsoon. "We are monitoring data and will not like to comment on El Nino impact at this stage," he said. More than half of the population in India being directly or indirectly dependent on farms, rain is indispensible element of survival. The ET predicts deficient rains could drive up inflation, especially <keyword id="67286" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Food-inflation">food inflation</keyword>, affecting the steps to put the <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword> back on track. In 2009, the country's worst drought in nearly four decades drove up food inflation to as much as 20 per cent and it took years for it come to bearable levels. 
Land preparation and sowing of kharif crops, largely paddy, soyabean, cotton, pulses such as pigeon peas (arhar) and green gram (moong), coarse cereals like bajra and jowar, pick up with the onset of the monsoon in the country.

New Delhi, Jun 25 () Even as monsoon reached the national capital on Thursday, two days earlier than the usual date of June 27, rains are likely to remain subdued over Delhi, Haryana and Chandigarh over the next few days. The India Meteorological Department on Thursday declared the onset of monsoon here and said the monsoon has further advanced into "some more parts of Rajasthan, remaining parts of Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh, entire Delhi, some parts of Haryana and most parts of Punjab". However, rainfall activity over Delhi, Haryana and Chandigarh is likely to remain weak for the next three days, said Sathi Devi, the head of National Weather Forecasting Centre (NWFC).Mahesh Palawat of Skymet Weather, a private weather forecasting service, said the monsoon has reached Delhi but the rains will remain subdued. "We can expect light, patchy rains on Thursday evening and Friday. Dry weather will prevail on June 27 and 28," he said. However, the overall monsoon is likely to be normal in Delhi this year. Normally, the wind system reaches Delhi on June 27. From this year, the IMD revised the onset date for monsoon. Earlier, the date for monsoon's arrival in the national capital was June 29. Kuldeep Srivastava, the head of the regional forecasting centre of the IMD, said the northern limit of the monsoon now passes through Nagor, Alwar, Delhi, Karnal and Ferozepur. Monsoon clouds had led to rains in some parts of the city on Wednesday but the weather department had said the onset would be declared on Thursday. Rainfall data from all weather stations for 24 hours till Thursday 8.30 am is required to declare the onset of monsoon, Srivastava had said. The southwest monsoon advanced further to cover most parts of Punjab and some parts of Haryana on Thursday, the Meteorological Department in Chandigarh said. The wind system had reached the northern parts of Punjab, and Chandigarh, on Wednesday, bringing rains at many places. "The monsoon has advanced into most parts of Punjab and some parts of Haryana. The northern limit of monsoon passes through Nagore, Alwar, Delhi, Karnal and Ferozepur," the MeT department said Thursday. The maximum temperatures settled a few notches below normal limits in the two states and at their common capital Chandigarh. Chandigarh recorded a high of 34.1 degrees Celsius, three notches below normal limit. In Haryana, Narnaul's maximum settled at 34.8 degrees Celsius, five notches below normal, while Hisar recorded a high of 36.5 degrees Celsius, three notches below normal. Karnal, which received light rain during the day, recorded a high of 35 degrees Celsius, a notch below normal. Ambala recorded a maximum of 34.7 degrees Celsius, two notches below normal. Patiala in Punjab recorded a high of 35 degrees Celsius, two notches below normal. Amritsar and Ludhiana, which received light showers, recorded maximum temperatures at 33.5 degrees Celsius 33.2 degrees Celsius and, respectively. The MeT has forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers at isolated places in Haryana and Punjab over the next two days. Meanwhile, thunderstorms wrought havoc in Bihar claiming more than 80 lives, leaving many injured and causing widespread damage to property since the previous day, the state's disaster management department said Thursday. According to a statement put out by the department, a total of 83 people have died in 23 districts of the state upon being struck by lightning, with Gopalganj accounting for the maximum number of 13 casualties. Reports from the districts said more than 20 people were injured and admitted to hospital upon receiving injuries in lightning which has caused widespread damage to houses and belongings of the residents. The weather department has predicted that the inclement weather could persist for some time to come. An IMD release said thunderstorms were likely to lash all the 38 districts of the state over the next few days along with "heavy to very heavy rainfall" in the northern, flood-prone, districts bordering Nepal. Monsoon reaches Delhi early; over 80 killed in thunderstorms in Bihar

New Delhi, May 28 (IANS) The national capital on Thursday evening witnessed some relief from the rising mercury with light rains and dust and thunderstorm with no heat wave witnessed in the day. According to the weather office, the Safdarjung Observatory recorded a maximum of 40.3 degrees Celsius, normal for the season, down by 5 notches from Wednesday. The Palam Observatory recorded the maximum temperature at 41.8 degrees Celsius, down from 47.2 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. "Heat wave abated from Delhi," the India Meteorological Department said on Thursday. The IMD said the observatories at Lodhi Road and Ayanagar recorded their respective maximums at 38.4 degrees Celsius and 40.4 degrees Celsius, below the season's average. It said the weather changed due to the effect of the easterly winds. The IMD predicted thunderstorms along with lightning, hail, squall/gusty winds likely over the Delhi-NCR region during May 28 and June 1. According to the Skymet, pre-monsoon rains are expected between May 29 and June 1. "Temperatures to drop further," it said. The national capital on May 23 witnessed maximum temperature at 46.2 degrees celsius -- new highest for season -- with the weather office predicting severe heat waves in the coming days.
