The monsoon period is expected to end by September, when the last of the winds leaves the western state of Rajasthan. Jatin Singh, managing director of Skymet, told Reuters that India would receive, “93% rainfall of the long period average in 2019.” Singh added that central India would get 91% of the average rainfall while eastern India would get 92%. South India, meanwhile, should get 95% of the average. Skymet’s prediction clashes with forecasts from the government-run India Meteorological Department (IMD), which said last month that there would be average rainfall this season - which provided <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/stocks/news/sensex-rises-139-points-nifty-at-11690-tata-motors-tcs-rally/articleshow/68889490.cms">a strong boost to stock markets</a> the day it was announced. The monsoon reportedly accounts for <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/stocks/news/imd-projects-near-normal-monsoon-but-how-big-a-factor-is-it-for-market/articleshow/68888435.cms">70-80%</a> of India’s water requirement for agriculture which is why people will keep a close eye on forecasts in the immediate future. Latest monsoon projection may take the wind out of India's markets

In contrast to its earlier prediction, private weather forecaster Skymet stated it might revise its forecast as rains across country stood 32% below average. 
 
Vice-president, meteorology at Skymet, GP Sharma said that by July-end, they might come with a revised forecast for the season and the months of August and September. 
 The forecaster had earlier forecast above normal monsoon rains this year while most other forecasters, including the official <keyword id="6355166" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="India-Meteorological-Department">India Meteorological Department</keyword> (IMD), predicted less than normal rains. 
 
However, he said that Skymet would not bring its forecast down, adding that he didn't expect July rains to be 104% of normal as forecasted earlier. 
 
"It will surely be in the minus side. But considering there is a margin error of ± 9 per cent in the monthly forecast, we are not wrong in our forecast," Sharma told Economic Times. 
 
The financial daily reported that as of July 15, the monthly monsoon rains across the country were 32% below average while the deficit for the whole season stood at 6%. 
 
Skymet says that monsoon rains will be 102% of its Long Period Average (LPA) this year, whereas IMD predicted only 88% of the average. 
 
"Northwestern India is the only region which has a cumulative rain surplus till now. We expect some improvement in the second half of July, but the deficit will prevail,” DS Pai, head of long-range forecasting at IMD, told ET. 
 
IMD is expected to release its next forecast on July 31. It has forecast July rainfall over the country to be 92% of its LPA. 
 
"Rainfall deficit for the country in July is 44 mm. We should get 12-13 mm rain daily to catch up with the normal," Skymet's Sharma told ET. 
 
He added that monsoons could spring a surprise anytime. "Heavy widespread monsoon showers for a few days can wipe out the deficit as happened in the previous year. Monsoon rains were 40% below normal across India till July 15 in 2014 and with spell of heavy rains the deficit came down to 22% by the month end," Sharma told the financial daily. 
 
Meanwhile, Skymet expects August rains to be 99% of the average with good rainfall in the first ten days of the month.

Monsoon to hit Kerala tomorrow, heatwave in Northern India to last another week

The <keyword id="55209" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Indian-Meteorological-Department">Indian Meteorological Department</keyword> (IMD) said the southwest monsoon had arrived in Kerala against the normal date of June 1. 
 
"The rainfall over Kerala has been fairly widespread to widespread for the last 48 hours. Out of the 14 rainfall monitoring stations for monsoon onset over Kerala, more than 70% of stations have reported rainfall higher than 2.5 mm for last consecutive two days," IMD said in its statement. 
 
IMD said monsoon has further advanced into entire south Arabian Sea, some parts of Central Arabian Sea, entire Lakshadweep area and Kerala, some parts of Coastal &amp; South Interior Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, remaining parts of southeast Bay of Bengal and some parts of central &amp; northeast Bay of Bengal. 
 As IMD as predicted a deficient monsoon this year, private weather forecaster <keyword id="6376779" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Skymet">Skymet</keyword> rejected IMD's forecast of likely drought. 
 
Skymet predicted that there would be a good monsoon season this year as the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) phenomenon counters an El Nino weather event. 
 
This should dismiss concerns of farmers who have already been hit hard by unseasonal rains earlier this year. 
 
Skymet, which claims its predictions have been correct for the past three years, forecast rains at 102% of the long-term average over the June-September monsoon season, as against IMD's 88%. 
 
Skymet’s chief meteorologist, G.P. Sharma, said the El Nino threat remains, but the positive IOD effect could prove beneficial. 
 
Skymet said positive IOD creates a barrier in the eastern Indian Ocean and all the southwesterly winds blow towards the Indian sub-continent, causing rains there but leading to droughts in parts of Indonesia and Australia. 
Even Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has downplayed fears of a drought. 
Meanwhile, the Indian Government prepared on war footing to implement the MNREGA plans so that livelihood of farmer is not affected.

Private weather forecaster Skymet rejects drought forecast in India

Despite predictions of an above normal <keyword id="6358301" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Monsoon">monsoon</keyword> so far, Agriculture Ministry has been asked to take care of any situation if rains remain deficient, Minister of Science &amp; Technology Y S Chowdary said today. 

	"Government is ready with contingency plan in some states. We have already informed the Agriculture Ministry to take care (of that). And by and large is it very positive now," Chowdary said on the sidelines of an event organised by Yes Bank promoted Yes Institute that works towards attracting funds for social innovation. 

	"Monsoon definitely not only revived but it is very encouraging. In few pockets, there may have some issues but across the country it is going to be very good,” he added. 
 Meanwhile, <keyword id="6355166" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="India-Meteorological-Department">India Meteorological Department</keyword> (IMD) has predicted deficient rains for the June-September season this year. However, private firm <keyword id="6376779" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Skymet">Skymet</keyword> has predicted an above normal monsoon. 

	Chowdary said the Ministry has many areas under its ambit, including power saving, solar, structural design, green energy and landscape. 
 

	"In the Ministry, we have many areas, power saving, solar, structural design, all these areas are very crucial. We can participate in many areas from green energy to landscape. Our Ministry has a very broad spectrum,” he said. 
 

	The Minister also said that the government is thinking of connecting with various countries on a collaborative working model to work towards these goals.

While the rest of the country is reeling through dry spell, the average rainfall in Mumbai in June was above its long-term average, according to Skymet. Heavy rains on Sunday night caused water logging and traffic snarls, slowing down one the metropolis on Monday (July 1). "A monsoon depression movement will be approaching near Maharashtra and the Konkan coast so we could get a little heavier spells, little respite in between before we have the next one again," GP Sharma, vice president of meteorology, <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/expert-view/monsoon-gains-second-wind-after-driest-june-expect-heavy-downpour-in-july-gp-sharma/articleshow/70025756.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">Skymet told a television channel</a> on Monday. And another bout of rain of over 200 mm or more could bring the congested city with creaky infrastructure and the country's two biggest stock exchanges to a standstill. Mumbai must brace for floods this week, says a private weather forecaster

Untimely shower in April is definitely taking a toll on the fresh sows in the northern parts of India. The ravi harvest in North and West India including onions in Maharashtra have been badly affected due to unseasonal rain and storm. However, a recent survey by a <keyword id="2808232" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="private-weather-forecaster">private weather forecaster</keyword> comes as a breather for the farmers. The <keyword id="6376779" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Skymet">Skymet</keyword> conducted survey points out that that the country will receive normal rains during the June-September monsoon season. 
 
As per a news report by The Economic Times, the government's India Meteorological department (IMD) is expected to forecast on the same by April 23. Local authorities use IMD's prediction to decide on their monsoon preparations. However, global forecasters are of opinion that 2015 in Indian agriculture might be largely impacted bby El Nino. El Nino has a history of adversely impacting monsoon rain. In the past decade, 2002, 2004 and 2009 were drought years due to the phenomenon 
"2014-15 has become an El Nino year as the Oceanic Nino index has crossed the threshold value of 0.5 for five consecutive times since September 2014 till March end. We expect it to last till May 2015 and thereafter go down, thereby not making any impact on Indian monsoon," GP Sharma, vice-president of meteorology at Skymet told the ET. 
 
Skymet expects a few dry patches in parts of northwest, central and south India but on the whole it is optimistic of normal rains in 2015. In its March forecast it has said that the monsoon rainfall might be 102 per cent of long-period average for the period June to September. 
As per the news report in the financial daily, average rainfall over India for June-September would be 89 cm. The long-term average is the average rainfall for the past 50 years. A deviation of up to 4 per cent on both sides is considered as normal. Anything beyond 10 per cent is excess rainfall, or drought. 
 
DS Pai, head of the long range forecast at IMD told the ET, that they were analysing the latest forecast and by April 22-23 come with their first forecast for the Indian monsoon. "We are monitoring data and will not like to comment on El Nino impact at this stage," he said. More than half of the population in India being directly or indirectly dependent on farms, rain is indispensible element of survival. The ET predicts deficient rains could drive up inflation, especially <keyword id="67286" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Food-inflation">food inflation</keyword>, affecting the steps to put the <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword> back on track. In 2009, the country's worst drought in nearly four decades drove up food inflation to as much as 20 per cent and it took years for it come to bearable levels. 
Land preparation and sowing of kharif crops, largely paddy, soyabean, cotton, pulses such as pigeon peas (arhar) and green gram (moong), coarse cereals like bajra and jowar, pick up with the onset of the monsoon in the country.

Apart from online warnings, Kalyan and Dombivili municipal corporations have gone offline and into the public with speakers on autorickshaws playing a message asking people to stay safe and at home.

 Apart from a bevy of volunteers, all of city’s emergency services are chipping in to aid stranded people --- like Fire Brigade, National Disaster Response Force (NRDF) too are in high alert mode, in case the city floods like it did in 2006. In Navi Mumbai and Western suburbs too experienced heavy rains overnight. Western express highway is flooded with Versova and Andheri are water logged already. Low lying areas of Dadar and Sion are also water-logged. Lifeline Stalled The train service which is referred to as ‘Mumbai’s lifeline’, has stopped early morning today as all the three lines—Western, Central and Harbour lines have been shut down. In fact, around 11:52 am, the city is expecting a high tide of 4.5 meters by 11:52 am. Over 50 flights from the Mumbai airport have been cancelled and over 50 others are diverted due to heavy rains, <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/india/mumbai-rains-live-updates-waterlogging-suburban-local-trains-traffic-monsoon-4148461.html">say reports</a>. While the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted intermittent to moderate rains this week, private weather forecaster Skymet sounded off an alarm saying that there could be flooding in the city between July 3 to 5 as it expects 200 mm or more of rainfall.
