Corporates team up for skills Indian corporates are also taking up training programme, as a part of corporate social responsibility projects. Only one in five people trained under government's Skill India Mission found jobs

Nearly 93% of the population in India lacks vocational and technical skills: Report

New Delhi, Feb 18 () Union Minister Mahendra Nath Pandey on Tuesday held a meeting with states representatives to review skill development activities and sought their suggestions on streamlining the upcoming initiatives, a release said. In a move aimed at increasing the role of states in skill development, it was decided that district skill committees will work closely with the Centre to drive demand-driven training initiatives, it stated. Short-term training courses would be introduced in industrial training institutes (ITIs) in consultation with state skill development missions, the release added. The Union ministry also proposed entrepreneurship development unit in each state which will be anchored with state skilling mission. It also proposed developing mentorship and handholding of existing and new entrepreneurs, through district entrepreneurship incubation lab in existing skilling institutions. The discussions were also held on developing an action plan for better implementation of skilling initiatives under 'Skill India Mission' and for creating employment opportunities for the youth. During the day-long workshop, Vision 2025 was also discussed which lays the ready-to-implement road-map for promoting skill development and entrepreneurship in the country. "Our endeavour is to move away from the low skill equilibrium and contribute towards economic growth and wealth creation through skill development and entrepreneurship. This will eventually lead to increased employment prospects for the youth of the nation," the Union Minister for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship said. RSN MRMR

India’s electric mobility mission expected to originate 10 million jobs: Report

Even today, when you put up a job on Naukri platform, there are over 1,000 applications. But it's still hard to find even five people that the employer is actually looking for,” Oberoi said. K P Krishnan, former secretary of the <keyword id="2485309" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Skill-Development">Ministry of Skill Development</keyword> and Entrepreneurship also agrees with the demand-supply gap in the job market. “India’s unemployment challenge is partly because of a low level of education, high dropout rates, labour market asymmetries, a mismatch between the supply of skills and demand and the high aspirations of young people,” he said. Quality of education and government initiatives Poor quality of education is one of the many risks that India faces — adding to its unemployment crisis.“What we have to do as an economy is focus on imparting the right set of skills and education at the university level. If that is done, there are enough jobs for these graduates to get hired,” he added. Even the ambitious Skill India mission is unable to plug the gap. This joblessness is hitting the youth the most. Only 37% of people in the 20-24 age group are employed. This is despite the fact that India has 35% of its working population in the 5 to 30 year age bracket. “This should get much more attention from policymakers. There would be more layoffs in India if not for this irony

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=skill+india&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Skill India</a> is one of the most ambitious programmes launched by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=prime+minister+narendra+modi&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Prime Minister Narendra Modi</a>, which aims at bridging the gap between demand and supply for <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=skilled+manpower&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">skilled manpower</a>, thereby increasing the skilled workforce in the country. 
 
As per Indian government statistics, 65% of Indians are under the age of 35 and by 2025, almost 1 in 5 of the world’s working age population will be an Indian. 
 The government record also stated that in last one year, more than 1.04 crore youth have been trained under the <keyword id="6569577" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Skill-India">Skill India</keyword> Mission. 
 
“The biggest achievement of the Modi Government was the formation of a separate Ministry for Skills, which has covered considerable ground since its formation in the field of skills. This brought Skills, Vocational Training and Livelihoods as an important means of nation-building to the forefront, which was much required in our country,” said Siddharth Chaturvedi, Director, AISECT, one of India’s skills based educational network. 
 
In India, skill development is an important milestone as the fad over traditional degrees still exists in the country. As the cut-offs are increasing and so are the drop-out rates, it has become pertinent to skill the youth and make them fit for <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=employment&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">employment</a>. 
 
“There is wide mismatch in industry demand and labour force supply. Globalization and competition has intensified the need of skilled work force in India. It is important to scale up skill development initiatives of Indian government and partner organizations. Studies show that countries with highly skilled human capital have high GDP and per capita income level. So, there is a need for both, skill development and formal education,” said Chaturvedi.

In the era of increasing automation, the demand for skilled workers remains at an all time high across sectors in the country. <keyword id="28120" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="linkedin">LinkedIn</keyword> has announced its partnership with <keyword id="5277690" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="ilfs-skills-development-corporation-limited">IL&amp;FS Skills Development Corporation Limited</keyword> to help up skill blue-collar workers and job seekers in the sector. IL&amp;FS Skills is India’s leading vocational and employability training company whose aim is to train four million people by 2022 in manufacturing, agriculture, services, engineering and construction sectors. The company currently has a placements network of 1000+ employers and provides Sector Skills Councils (SSC) certification.The Indian government has a target to train over 400 million people in India in different skills by 2022. With LinkedIn, IL&amp;FS has devised a digital vocational training program that provides a vocational skilling ecosystem which includes the LinkedIn platform and helps bring the offline blue-collar workers online enabling them to access opportunities and training courses simultaneously.

Skill with LinkedIn India This partnership is an initiative by LinkedIn to support the Indian government’s ‘Skill India’ mission and also expand its growing Indian member-base. India is the second biggest market for LinkedIn after the U.S. In India, some states have labour shortages and others have labour surplus which makes job placements challenging. <keyword id="1770138" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="allen-blue">Allen Blue</keyword>, Co-founder, LinkedIn told Business Insider, “Employers on the LinkedIn platform hire across management levels and while LinkedIn is known for discovering great white-collar jobs, there is a need for high skilled blue collar workers.  The course of time Under this partnership, IL&amp;FS will design and provide the skilling modules and training while LinkedIn will help the students cover the last mile from up-skilling to getting a job using the platform. LinkedIn has designed a separate interface for the students where they are able to create a profile, access learning content, build their network by connecting with classmates, seniors and instructors and get a job and the instruction is in a Hindi voice-over. The program starts this month at IL&amp;FS Skills Development Centres across India with the initial batch of 400 job-seekers looking for careers in hospitality. A single batch will undergo 45 days of training and LinkedIn aims to expand it to ten batches in 120 days.

Here’s why LinkedIn is training blue collar workers in India

India is one of the first countries to partner with the initiative. </li></ul>Every month a million people in India turn 18, ready to take up jobs. To help them, Smriti Irani, Minister for Women and Child Development launched ‘YuWaah’ — Generation Unlimited’. The government partnered with 30 participating to train the youth between the ages of 10 and 24. The initiative is supported by UNICEF. It aims to engage over 300 million youngsters in education, skills training or employment over the next decade. “The government is determined to make YuWaah a transformational alliance that brings a national step change in preparing young people for the transition from education to 21st century work,” Irani said at the launch. India is in dire need of skills training as its efforts have to be intensified by ten fold. Skilling needs to be much more aspirational, KP Krishnan, Secretary, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship said. In 2018, UNICEF initiated the Generation Unlimited partnership globally. “An engineering degree has a validity of 18 months to 5 years. Hence, the youth today should learn agility — learn, unlearn and relearn. Soft skills — creativity, teamwork, growth mindset — are the future. India will start skilling its youth starting from those who are ten years old

<ul><li>India’s leather sector — which is the second largest leather garment and footwear producer globally — is believed to originate nearly 2 million jobs by 2024. </li><li>The statement was made during an award ceremony certifying candidates with Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) in the leather sector. </li><li>India contributes 13% to the total leather production, globally. </li><li>As of now, the sector employs over 2.5 million people in India. </li></ul>Indian government is betting on the leather sector to create jobs. “The leather sector is an export driven sector and has the potential to create 2 million jobs in the next 5 years,” said Dr. Mahendra Nath Pandey, Minister for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (<keyword id="2952126" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="MSDE">MSDE</keyword>) at an award ceremony. India’s leather sector — is the second largest leather garment and footwear producer globally. “The Government of India has allowed 100% foreign direct investment (FDI) in the sector and rationalized export duty on raw and semi-finished leather. The sector employees over 2.5 million people,” he added. The government extended Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Certificates under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) of Skill India mission, in <keyword id="12864" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chennai">Chennai</keyword>. Over 2 million candidates have received the certification so far. India contributes 13% to the total leather production, globally. Given that, the exports in the sector are expected to hit $9 billion by 2020. Recognising the RPL certified candidates, Pandey said that “India has always had a rich heritage of leather crafts like footwear and accessories, prepared by highly skilled craftsmen from various clusters like <keyword id="6356295" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="agra">Agra</keyword>, Kanpur, <keyword id="293385" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ambur">Ambur</keyword> and other regions.” “Fashion and trends have a great influence in this industry. There are many opportunities for entrepreneurship in traditional leather trades and new forms of leather substitutes. We need to cater to basic needs as well as luxury segments, with vast potential for exports.” The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship jointly with Leather Sector Skill Council (LSSC) has been providing skill training to professionals in the sector. As of now, the sector employs over 2.5 million people in India. The Skill Development ministry also announced “Mochi Swabhimaan” Initiative. India believes that its export duty rationalization on leather goods can create 2 million jobs

Skilling is one of the major challenges facing India today. India has at present roughly 65 percent of the population below 35 years of age. It raises the possibility of economic growth provided India can leverage its <keyword id="576921" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="demographic-dividend">demographic dividend</keyword> by empowering people with skills. Over the next five years, the present 9-14 age group people will enter the workforce. In addition, a large proportion of people drop out of the formal education process in India. Skilling also imparts opportunities to these people who have not been able to pursue formal education. Four points are critical for '<keyword id="6569577" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Skill-India">Skill India</keyword>' to be successful and being fully equipped to leveraging India's demographic dividend. 

	First, the focus should be on mapping skills across various sectors for employment. It's means that the industry, as well as the government, should look at enlisting the skill requirements of the country. The industry should also interact frequently with institutions is telling them their requirements so that there is no mismatch between industry expectations and institutional curriculum. It also ensures that people who go to these institutions and imbibe the skills become job ready. The focus of skilling should be on future skills and jobs of the future and not on curriculum that is outdated and redundant in the industry.
 Second, mapping the skills with location's requirements, and institutions is very important. At a national level, the need is to map the skill requirement of the world and impart skill training appropriately where there is a huge demand for the workforce at the international level. It also means that states and, in particular, cities should identify areas in which they have conventional strength. For instance a location like Hyderabad that is good in the <keyword id="189164" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="pharmaceutical-industry">pharmaceutical industry</keyword> should focus on providing skills for that particular sector. Similarly, a place like Shimla, which attracts tourists, should focus on skills for development of its tourism cluster. These have to be locally identified and then taken to appropriate institutions that can provide training in these areas. Third, it is important to build institutions that not only provide formal training but also provide certification to people. It is often a neglected dimension of skilling. An automobile technician working in a factory in say <keyword id="87" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Germany">Germany</keyword> takes pride in his job. In India, one often find low self-esteem and low worth of such individuals in the society. Certifications and instilling a sense of confidence and pride is a must for development of skill potential of India. Certifications should also be provided to people who can pass basic tests but have no formal recognition at present. Finally, formalizing the process of skilling and provision of multiple skilling are the need of the hour. It is because formalization would lead to a better and a systems-oriented approach to skilling that to date has been a largely informal process. For instance, driving is often learnt not by training institutions but by some other driver teaching the newer one. If the process is formalized, it would certainly lead to better outcome during the process of learning and even post that once the driver has finished training. Similarly, a large number of people often face problems in operating mobile phones. If training is provided for learning the basic functionality, a large number of problems will be taken care of. In the present time, the need is to look for multiple skills and constant up gradation of existing skills. The issue of <keyword id="107737" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Entrepreneurship">entrepreneurship</keyword> is also related to the issue of skilling with people having multiple skills often wanting to start their venture. Thus, skilling empowers and at the same time is necessary for realizing the aspirations of people. If India focuses on these broad points, it can surely leverage its demographic dividend at the same time solving the problem of <keyword id="6358907" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="unemployment">unemployment</keyword> of youth. It would require a concerted effort on the part of policymakers at various levels, technical institutions as well as the industry in understanding the skill gap and in taking steps to reduce the gap. In the years ahead India has the potential to become the human capital of the world. Realizing this dream cannot be achieved without systematic thinking and implementation of the 'Skill India' mission.

To ensure that the unemployed rural population of India also fulfils its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=entrepreneur&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">entrepreneurial dreams</a>, a new programme is going to be launched soon on the lines of ‘<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=startup+india&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Startup India, Standup India’</a>. 
 
The Deen Dayal Upadhyay Swaniyojan Yojana will be launched soon in which rural poor will be able to explore self-employment opportunities. 
 
The programme, which will be funded by the National Rural Livelihood Mission of the rural development ministry, will have skill sets such as driving, plumbing, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=agriculture&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">agriculture</a>, horticulture, etc. 
 
In case of funding, the Micro Units Development and Refinance Agency, or the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=mudra+bank&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">MUDRA Bank</a> will oversee it. 
 
As per the Socio Economic and Caste Census (SECC) data, one third of India's rural households are landless and depend on manual labour for an income, highlighting the need for <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=skill+development&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">skill development</a> in these areas.

Unemployed rural-poor to get desi version of ‘Startup India, Standup India’, fulfil entrepreneurial dreams

Matching job creation with industry demand is the key to end <keyword id="6358907" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="unemployment">unemployment</keyword>, said Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> at the launch of <keyword id="6569577" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Skill-India">Skill India</keyword> Programme on the occasion of the World Youth Skill Day. 

	Here are the highlights of his speech:

	• Every poor Indian is my soldier. I have to win the war of over poverty with them.
 

	• Skills not only put money in your pocket, it give you self-confidence.
 

	• This mission is for those people who are left behind. And who are these people? People with money aren't left behind, these are the poor.
 

	• This initiative is not merely to fill pockets but to bring a sense of self-confidence among the poor.
 

	• 65 per cent of the Indian population is under the age of 35. And if they don't have skill, they will become a challenge for us rather than an opportunity.
 

	• Through this mission we want to fulfil dreams of people and we want to do it in a structured way, taking states together.
 

	• We have to create structures and mechanisms to nurture youngsters, enabling them to find employment.
 

	• We want that a person should be capable of multiple activities (skills).
 

	• We have not restricted ourselves to skill development, we've focused on entrepreneurship.
 

	• We want to give opportunities to apprentices who want to become entrepreneurs.
 

	• We have to make all our training institutions dynamic. Technology is changing so rapidly that it is necessary to be dynamic to remain relevant.
 

	• We have to map the strategy for the next 10 years of development.
 

	• We have to have a futuristic vision; need to think what technology will be there in the next 10 years.
