<b><br /></b><ul><li><strong>Taiwanese company <keyword id="16129" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="HTC">HTC</keyword> announced a new phone, based on <keyword id="6355684" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Blockchain">blockchain</keyword> technology.</strong></li><li><strong>The new phone will apparently be called Exodus.<br /></strong></li><li><strong>The company wants to support the entire blockchain ecosystem through its new projects led by <keyword id="6532160" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="phil-chen">Phil Chen</keyword>.</strong></li></ul>Smartphone manufacturer, HTC, is planning to launch a blockchain-based phone in the upcoming months, <a href="https://thenextweb.com/hardfork/2018/05/15/htc-blockchain-powered-phone/">according to recent reports</a>. The Android-powered smartphone is still under development and will apparently be named “Exodus”. The phone is being designed especially for cryptocurrency and decentralised apps (D-app) users. D-Apps are open sourced applications used for cryptocurrency related activities.<br /><br />The smartphone will feature a Universal wallet and a built-in secure hardware enclave to support cryptocurrencies and decentralized applications. The company’s blockchain smartphone project is being led by Phil <keyword id="296675" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chen">Chen</keyword>, the man behind HTC’s Vive VR headset. Chen will also be leading future efforts around this device. <br /><br />In order to facilitate cryptocurrency trading among the Exodus phone users, HTC plans to create a native blockchain network with all the new phones acting as nodes.<br /><br />Chen said that company would like to support the entire blockchain ecosystem and also, will be announcing many more partnerships in the upcoming months. HTC might even accept cryptocurrency as payment for the phone, but the price is still to be decided.<br /><br />That said, we don’t yet have word on how much HTC will sell this smartphone at. A startup called <keyword id="3337110" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sirin-Labs">Sirin Labs</keyword> had announced a blockchain smartphone in September last year. While that phone is expected to arrive in October 2018, it had been priced at $1000, which may give us an inkling to what HTC may charge for its device.<br /><br />Using the blockchain theoretically allows HTC to make the Exodus more secure than regular devices. Although the features offered by Exodus can be integrated into an average smartphone with the help of software. We have to wait for one of these blockchain phones to be available in the market to see if they offer any improvements in the user experience of browsing through the decentralized web and cryptocurrency trading, over a regular smartphone.<br />

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Courtesy of Sirin Labs.</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Israeli startup <a href="https://www.sirinlabs.com">Sirin Labs</a> on Wednesday unveiled a new smartphone called "Solarin," which boasts an application that allows users to wipe the phone from remote locations and encrypted calls, texts, and emails.</p><p>This "military-grade" security isn't cheap. The phone costs a whopping $17,000.</p><p>Solarin is currently available for purchase online and at Sirin Labs' store in London. The phone will make its way to high-end London department store Harrods on June 30.</p><p>Considering the phone's hefty price tag - and its launch event peppered with celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio and Victoria's Secret models - it's no surprise that the phone is marketed at the rich. Solarin's desired customer, per its press release, is an "t<span>he international business person who carries a </span><span>lot of sensitive information but doesn't want to compromise on usability, </span><span>quality or design."</span></p><p><span>But the phone's high-level security also has some concerned that the phone could fall into the wrong hands. According <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2016/05/31/sirin-labs-shows-off-14k-super-private-solarin-smartphone-on-sale-june-1/">to TechCrunch</a>, customers will need a valid passport in order to purchase the smartphone, and the phone won't be sold in a number of countries. Sirin Labs did not respond to Tech Insider's inquiry on which countries would be barred from buying Solarin.</span></p><p><span>Here's a look at Solarin's key features.</span></p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Mirage</span></p><p class="caption">Moshe Hogeg and eam</p></div><p></p></div></div>People in Israel's tight-knit startup community are talking about the reported death, and the odd life, of once high-flying startup Mobli.</p><p>Mobli raised $86 million in venture funds in six years, some from some big names. </p><p>Mobli's layoffs were first reported by <a href="http://www.calcalist.co.il/internet/articles/0,7340,L-3689411,00.html"> Israeli business Calcalist,</a> and confirmed by Business Insider.</p><p>Mobli's CEO Moshe Hogeg told us the company has cut 15 employees this week and is closing its Israeli R&amp;D center.</p><p>Sources are telling us this represents all of Mobli's remaining Israeli employees, although Hogeg insists that the company is not being closed down entirely. He says he's retaining an R&amp;D team in Europe.</p><p>At its height Mobli employed about 50 people and now only a handful remain, sources tell us.</p><p>In Israel, the shock isn't so much that Mobli is struggling. People don't understand how the company has stayed alive as long as it has. It jumped from one failed product to the next.</p><h2>How is this company still alive?</h2><p>Mobili sprung to life in 2010 as a photo-sharing social media site backed by starangel investors like Lance Armstrong, Serena Williams, and Tobey Maguire. It later landed $60 million from Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim, it said, for a total of $86 million raised.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.mobli.com/watch/22700756">Mobli.com</a></span></p><p class="caption">Lance Armstrong</p></div><p></p></div></div>For instance, Armstrong used Mobli to share that famous photo of himself with his <span>Tour de France jerseys after he was banned for life by the International Cycling Union </span><span><a href="http://www.usatoday.com/story/gameon/2012/11/12/lance-armstrong-yellow-jerseys-picture/1699693/">for doping</a>.</span></p><p>But then Instagram came along, Facebook bought it, and that pretty much killed Mobli as a photo sharing social network.</p><p>The company pivoted to other apps. For instance in 2015, it launched an app called EyeIn, a photo service for publishers that let them find photos of events shared on social media sites, launched last year.</p><p>It shut EyeIn down just two months after it was launched when Instagram blocked the app from using Instagram photos.</p><p>"We had to shut down EyeIn two months after launch because Facebook/Instagram blocked us from their API rendering our technology useless," <span>Hogeg confirmed to us.</span></p><h2><span>See 'ya later Slant?</span></h2><p>Mobli then moved on to Slant, a news site based in New York for freelance articles. Writers got professional editing and Slant took a 30% cut of any advertising revenue their articles generated. Slant hit 4 million readers in a month, published 9,000 stories from 1,400 writers, its editor Amanda Gutterman said her farewell letter in April announcing Slant was being shut down, as <a href="http://www.politico.com/media/story/2016/04/publishing-start-up-slant-news-stops-publishing-004461">reported by Politico.</a></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.galaxia.co/">www.galaxia.co</a></span></p><p class="caption">Mobli's Galaxia</p></div><p></p></div></div>A former employee told us that much of this traffic was generated through paid ad campaigns via services like<a href="http://www.outbrain.com/"> Outbrain</a>.</p><p>Slant later told Politico that it was not closed for good but will be back once the company figures out a new business model. Meanwhile,<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/amanda-gutterman-0692a053"> Gutterman </a>has moved on to a new job at The Dose and the site is not functioning.</p><p>Mobli now has a new thing, <a href="http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20160317005906/en/Backed-Carlos-Slim-Oscar-Winner-Leonardo-Dicaprio">a new social network app called Galaxia</a> launched in March, where people are encouraged to take on different "personas."</p><p>Mobli says Galaxia's tech came from a startup it acquired called Pheed. The rumor was it paid $40 million in cash for Pheed, but <span>Hogeg tells us that the true price was really "just a few million."</span></p><p>The people we talked to has marveled that Mobli says it is still in business and can't understand how. </p><p>Hogeg says that Mobli has been clear where its money has come from: venture investors.</p><p>"We've always been very transparent about our funding. Amongst are investors: Carlos Slim, Leo DiCaprio and Kenges Rakishev and all that info is readily available. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Sam Shead/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">Israel chief scientist Avi Hasson.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Israel is poised to launch a dedicated immigration visa for tech entrepreneurs "within weeks," according to Avi Hasson, the Chief Scientist of the Ministry of Economy of the State of Israel.</p><p>Several hundred entrepreneurs from around the world will be welcomed to Israel - often dubbed the "Startup Nation" - under the new visa, said Hasson during an interview with Business Insider at his office in Tel Aviv on September 26.</p><p>"We need more people to come in and generate," said Hasson at the DLD Innovation conference the following day. "We're working with the Immigration Authority and the Ministry of Finance to set up a fast track to bring in entrepreneurs from abroad."</p><p>Israel's entrepreneur visa has been in the pipeline for more than a year, based on <a href="http://www.jpost.com/Business-and-Innovation/Tech/Israel-to-issue-start-up-visas-for-foreign-entrepreneurs-429857" target="_blank">a report from The Jerusalem Post</a> which was published last October.</p><p>Hasson added: "We will be launching a new programme in the next few weeks: a visa for entrepreneurs."</p><p>Before being handed a visa, the overseas entrepreneurs must first of all complete a stint at one of 12 accelerators and incubators in Israel. This will apparently help them to navigate their way around Israel's tech ecosystem, according to Hasson. "After that, you get a visa to set up company and work here for five years," he said.</p><p>Hasson, who is also keen to get more ultra orthodox Jews and women into tech in Israel, was unable to specify exactly how much the visas will cost but he said they should be less than $1,000 (£817).</p><p>But some in the Israeli tech ecosystem think that more entrepreneurs is the last thing that the country needs. Moshe Hogeg, cofounder and president of luxury smartphone company Sirin Labs, said the Israeli government should be focusing on trying to attract more highly-skilled engineers, adding that startups have to compete with Silicon Valley giants like Google, Apple, and Facebook when it comes to hiring.</p><p>Hogeg said there's more of a need for an engineer visa than there is for an entrepreneur visa. "We're not building big companies, we're building small companies," he said. "The average exit in Israel is $30 million (£25 million). It's tricky.
