<ul class="summary-list"><li>On a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-i-took-switzerland-beautiful-train-for-cheap-glacier-express">trip to Switzerland</a>, I made a few mistakes that would be easy to avoid next time.</li><li>I visited Zurich, the country's largest city, and two towns in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ancient-wealthy-traveler-discovered-thawing-glacier-archaeology-2024-3">the Swiss Alps</a>: Sion and St. Moritz.</li></ul><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/asked-chatgpt-plan-trip-switzerland-budget-2023-11">I went to Switzerland</a> for the first time last year, riding trains out of Zurich and through the Swiss Alps.</p><p>Though I<strong> </strong>have<strong> </strong>lots of experience <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-you-should-visit-fewer-countries-cities-when-backpacking-europe-2023-9">traveling in Europe</a>, some norms in the country caught me off guard during the nine-day trip.</p><p>As I made my way first to Zurich, then Sion, and finally to St. Moritz, I made a few traveling blunders that I'll be sure to avoid next time.</p><h2 id="3f3dba19-05a3-4128-84ea-2330b94b7d63">Trying to walk into restaurants without a reservation</h2><div type="image" title="inside a restaurant with tables full under a midieval wood beam ceiling" height="1500" width="2000" msid="111494370" hostid="261" sizebytes="252638"></div><p>Multiple people told me to eat at Restaurant Zeughauskeller, the most famous classic Swiss <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trying-most-expensive-mcdonalds-switzerland-disappointing-fries-best-burger-2023-12">restaurant in Zurich</a>, so on my second night there, I strolled over.</p><p>Even though it was a Wednesday, the former medieval armory was packed. I joined a huddle of about a dozen other reservation-less people waiting outside.<br /><br />When I peeked into the huge dining room with high wood-beamed ceilings, where each long table was filled with people eating and drinking, a server told me over the din of voices that the wait could be over an hour.</p><p>When I arrived in Sion, a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/switzerland-village-roggwil-hidden-gem-destination-backpacking-europe-2023-9">small town in the mountains</a>, I thought I'd be fine without any restaurant reservations. But each high-rated Sion eatery I went to turned me away, saying they were full.</p><div type="image" title="brick-paved pedestrian-only street lined with lamposts and four-story pastel-colored buildings with mountains swiss alps in the distance" height="1500" width="2000" msid="111494368" hostid="261" sizebytes="492712"></div><p>By the time I got to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/st-moritz-secret-gem-ski-resort-luxury-swiss-alps-photos-2018-11">St. Moritz</a>, I'd learned my lesson and called ahead to make reservations. I had no issues getting into those restaurants.</p><h2 id="22dc9dc5-0db1-4232-a35d-a35004e4d526">Not realizing water costs extra</h2><p id="22dc9dc5-0db1-4232-a35d-a35004e4d526">I made another gaffe<strong> </strong>inside the Swiss restaurants. Coming from the US, I assumed water was free with any meal.</p><p>Later, when I looked at my receipts, I realized flat or sparkling water at almost every restaurant cost an extra 3 to 5 Swiss francs.</p><p>According to the restaurant directory <a target="_blank" href="https://www.swissrest.ch/good-to-know/tap-water-in-restaurants/">swissrest.ch</a>, only one of the country's 26 cantons (similar to states in the US) has a law requiring restaurants to provide free water. The directory asks customers to consider tap water a "hospitality service."</p><h2 id="606a6c04-5740-4756-8351-00e0cb23d30f">Using Airbnb instead of a hotel</h2><div type="image" title="wide river lined with old zurich buildings with yellow lights on in the windows on a cloudy evening" height="1500" width="2000" msid="111494371" hostid="261" sizebytes="319598"></div><p>When I was booking my trip, I checked Airbnb first because it was much cheaper than hotels when I recently visited France.</p><p>I didn't have many options, but I snagged an Airbnb in Zurich that ended up being the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gave-up-airbnb-for-hotels-2023-7">worst place I stayed</a> during the entire trip.</p><p>The tiny studio apartment featured an uncomfortable bed with scratchy sheets, a small table with chairs, a kitchen sink, and a bathroom.</p><p>I either had to leave the windows open and expose myself to direct sunlight and noise from the busy road below or close them and let the room get stuffy.</p><p>Thankfully, I only stayed there for two nights. I think I would've been better off in a cheap hotel room, which likely would've had a better bed and no kitchen area, which I didn't need.</p><p>The city has a lot of Airbnb options, though, so I probably could've gotten a nicer studio if I'd spent more money or booked further in advance.</p><p>Plus, there may be even more options in the future. In its Q4 2023 <a target="_blank" href="https://airbnb2020ipo.q4web.com/files/doc_financials/2023/q4/Airbnb_Q4-2023-Shareholder-Letter_Final.pdf">earnings report</a>, Airbnb said it was expanding its "playbook" in a few European countries like Switzerland, continuing its efforts at "investing in under-penetrated international markets."</p><p>In Sion and St. Moritz, I had booked rooms in boutique hotels instead and they were lovely.</p><h2 id="96ba8b98-88cd-418a-a422-00197eed4979">Using Google Maps to locate bus stops</h2><div type="image" title="view from the side of a street beneath a building with a ramp leading out to the sunny street above" height="1500" width="2000" msid="111494372" hostid="261" sizebytes="293722"></div><p id="96ba8b98-88cd-418a-a422-00197eed4979">Switzerland lived up to its reputation for efficient, on-time trains with clear signage, but I can't say the same for the buses.</p><p id="96ba8b98-88cd-418a-a422-00197eed4979">In Zurich, I struggled to find bus stops. I would walk to the exact spot where Google Maps said the bus stop was and see no signs or benches. I'd wander around looking for the bus stop while watching several buses drive past me without stopping.</p><p>Each time, I had to ask a local or two where the bus stop was. It was usually at least a block away from the location I saw in the app.</p><p>Plus, the buses didn't arrive nearly as often as they were said to on Google Maps.</p><p>Next time, I wouldn't rely solely on Google Maps to get around. I'll probably use the SBB <a target="_blank" href="https://www.sbb.ch/en">website</a> or mobile app to find bus stops and public transit routes.</p><h2 id="c26e013d-6c30-4e5c-8c16-88066586f74c"><span>Buying a one-device outlet adapter at the airport</span></h2><p>I forgot to pack an adapter to plug my American devices into Swiss outlets, so I had to buy one once I landed at the Zurich airport.</p><p>Unfortunately, it only charged one device at a time.</p><p>Since I was carrying a phone, a portable phone battery, AirPods, two laptops, an electric toothbrush,<strong> </strong>and a camera, I would've preferred some extra charging capacity.</p><p>Every moment I was in a hotel room or café, I was plugging something in. Several nights, I brushed my teeth manually with my dead electric toothbrush.</p><p>I could've saved a lot of hassle and<strong> </strong>about $15 by ordering an adapter with multiple USB ports on Amazon ahead of my trip.</p>

I loved my first visit to Switzerland — but my trip would've been better if I hadn't made these 5 mistakes

<ul class="summary-list"><li>I <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/mom-two-sets-twins-planned-trip-to-asia-with-chapgpt-2023-3">asked ChatGPT to plan my 10-day trip</a> to three cities in Switzerland on a $3,500 budget.</li><li>I hoped the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/everything-you-need-to-know-about-chat-gpt-2023-1">AI chatbot</a> could save me some time that I usually spend researching before a trip.</li></ul><p>There's been a lot of hype about artificial-intelligence chatbot ChatGPT and how it can make tasks easier — and I wondered if that usefulness could extend to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/woman-used-chatgpt-to-plan-europe-trip-2023-5">planning trips</a>.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/how-i-check-hotel-mattresses-for-bedbugs-paid-off-2023-10">I went to Switzerland in October</a>, traveling to three different cities on a budget and a time crunch. I hoped ChatGPT would help me skip some time-consuming research on all the logistics.</p><p>But I learned that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chatgpt-travel-itenerary-vacation-costa-rica-errors-logistics-advisors-2023-3">the AI chatbot isn't quite the personal assistant and travel agent</a> some TikTokers made it out to be.</p><h2>I asked ChatGPT to plan my Switzerland travel and broke down my request into a few categories</h2><p>Here's the prompt I gave ChatGPT:</p><p>Because ChatGPT can't check the internet live, I wasn't expecting it to scrape the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/chatgpt-ai-guidegeek-travel-bali-los-angeles-travel-fly-2023-8">current prices of flights</a> or hotels.</p><p>OpenAI <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/OpenAI/status/1707077710047216095">announced</a> that it added an internet-browsing feature to the chatbot in late September (after I'd already booked my trip). For now, it's only available to paying subscribers.</p><p>Even without access to live internet, I hoped ChatGPT would tell me my airline options, when the cheapest flights might be, or which hotels might combine to fit my budget.</p><p>It didn't.</p><h2>ChatGPT's suggestions for my Switzerland trip weren't super helpful</h2><p>For flights, ChatGPT was pretty vague and only gave me an estimated budget of $800 to $1,200. I ended up paying more than that for the cheapest direct flights, $1,398.95.</p><p>It noted that early October — the only time I said I was considering — might be a nice time of year to visit because of the weather, but didn't suggest days to book flights to save money.</p><p>One good piece of advice the bot gave me was to purchase a Swiss Travel Pass and take the train everywhere I went. I already knew from skimming a couple travel blogs that this was probably my cheapest and most efficient option.</p><div type="image" title="selfie of the author sitting in a train seat smiling and holding up a small cookie tart" height="1650" width="2200" msid="105478370" hostid="261" sizebytes="450244"></div><p>For accommodations, ChatGPT broke my trip down into chunks — three nights in Zurich, two nights in Sion, and four nights in St. Moritz — but didn't provide a ton of detail for each place.</p><p>Many suggestions were simple to the point they weren't useful, just stating "hotel" or "hostel" as places to stay on a budget.</p><p>The AI bot's suggestions ended with some travel reminders, but many of them were things I already knew, such as packing layers of clothing and getting a travel adapter for Switzerland's outlets.</p><p>The one truly helpful part of the response was the food suggestions.</p><p>ChatGPT basically told me the same regional specialties that I learned about from watching a 20-minute YouTube video: Go to Zurich's Old Town for dinner, try raclette in Sion, and eat barley soup in St. Moritz.</p><div type="image" title="fondue pot full of melted cheese on a restaurant table beside plate of pickles glass of white wine cup of water and basket of bread cubes with a plate holding a cheesy fondue fork" height="3024" width="4032" msid="105478371" hostid="261" sizebytes="856856"></div><p>I also liked that it gave me three different budget levels of lodging for each city.</p><p>Ultimately, though, I chose my stays by searching Navan and Airbnb for what was available for the dates I wanted and choosing the cheapest one with a central location in the city where I was staying.</p><h2>I gave ChatGPT a second chance to act as a personal assistant — but it still flopped</h2><p>After I returned from my trip, I thought maybe I hadn't been clear enough about what I wanted. Perhaps I'd needed a more precise prompt.</p><p>After all, ChatGPT has never gone on a trip before. It doesn't really know all the flight-searching and number-crunching and time-scheduling that can entail.</p><p>So, I tried to push it to its travel-planning limits. Here's what I wrote:</p><p>That prompted the bot to give me a line-by-line budget breakdown, which was closer to what I was looking for. Still, its lodging recommendations were as basic as "hostel" or "guesthouse."</p><p>It also underestimated the cost of flights (saying the round trip would be about $1,000) and meals.</p><p>It suggested just $50 per day for food. That could maybe work if I were grocery shopping and cooking every dinner and most lunches, but when I was in Switzerland, almost every restaurant meal cost about $50 on its own.</p><p>I've confidently concluded that I'm a better travel planner than ChatGPT. It also didn't save me any time.</p><p>In the future, I think I'll stick with travel blogs, YouTube videos, and websites like Skyscanner for planning my travels.</p>

I'm not in bad shape, but I would have moved much, much slower on a regular bike.</p><p>Some ski schools are diversifying their business and offering guided biking and hiking in the winter, too, as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mountains-switzerland-collapsing-from-permafrost-melt-2023-8">the planet warms</a> and less snow falls.</p><h2>Gondolas offer unique views of the mountains</h2><div type="image" title="inside of a gondola, a wooden bench beneath a glass wall with a small swiss town in the mountains" height="2000" width="1500" msid="105497920" hostid="261" sizebytes="325086"></div><p>On a different day, in the town of Nendaz in the French-speaking region of the Swiss Alps, I paid 15 Swiss Francs (about $17) to ride a gondola up the mountain.</p><p>I got a view over the Alps that I could never in town or on the train. I could see glaciers in the distance.</p><p>There are a number of gondolas like this throughout Switzerland, and you can ride them most of the year for a small fee.</p><h2>Skydiving and paragliding offer an even grander view</h2><div type="image" title="paraglider under a green yellow parachute above swiss cabin-style hotels" height="1500" width="2000" msid="105497921" hostid="261" sizebytes="93332"></div><p>If I were really ambitious I probably could've gone skydiving or paragliding.</p><p>I saw a lot of people doing that as I looked out over the mountains.</p><h2>Hiking was easy and beautiful — and I stopped at a restaurant in the middle</h2><div type="image" title="woman wearing backpack blue shirt taking selfie in front of mountain slope with peaks in background" height="1500" width="2000" msid="105497922" hostid="261" sizebytes="350978"></div><p>I stayed in the valley town of Sion for a few days.</p><p>There were hiking trails through the vineyards and hillsides there, but I wanted to take advantage of the mountain views, so I took a 30-minute bus ride up the mountain to the town of Nendaz.</p><p>From there, the gondola took me to the top of the ski slope, where there were a number of trails to choose from.</p><p>I could've trekked 14 miles over a mountain ridge, but I only had a few hours before sunset, so I chose an easy 7-mile stroll down the mountainside back to Nendaz.</p><p>The trail went through a few small villages and past one restaurant with stunning views. It was seven hours of stunning views.</p><div type="image" title="swiss alps green valley with a small town beneath mountain peaks with train tracks running through" height="1500" width="2000" msid="105497928" hostid="261" sizebytes="355578"></div><p>The views were incredibly lush and green, a perk of visiting in the offseason. </p><h2>My takeaway: Switzerland is probably lovely in any season</h2><div type="image" title="ski lifts hang empty all the way down a slope over a pond with large shaded mountains in the distance" height="1500" width="2000" msid="105497929" hostid="261" sizebytes="292748"></div><p>Switzerland was incredibly scenic and I loved visiting in the fall.</p><p>The weather was pleasant, the towns were adorable and weren't full of tourists, and I had a lot of options for exploring the mountains.</p><p>Plus, many of these "fall" activities I enjoyed may become common for winter as well as the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.meteoswiss.admin.ch/weather/weather-and-climate-from-a-to-z/snow/snow-and-winter-becoming-warmer.html">season has begun starting later</a> and more hiking and biking trails are becoming available year-round.</p><p>Overall, I'd recommend visiting the country in any season —and you could do a lot worse than going in the fall.</p>

Besides, the company’s financials have been healthy and it has posted revenue/PAT CAGR of 7%/32% over FY19-21. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Two voters in <keyword id="11899150" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="wisconsin" source="Orion">Wisconsin</keyword> sued to ban ballot drop boxes for absentee ballots last year. </li><li>On Friday, the state's Supreme Court sided with them. </li></ul><p>The Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled to allow a ban on the use of ballot drop boxes in the state's April election, <a href="https://www.jsonline.com/story/news/politics/2022/02/11/wisconsin-supreme-court-allows-ban-ballot-drop-boxes-april-election/6755914001/">The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported</a>. </p><p>The ruling follows a wave of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-companies-oppose-voting-restriction-laws-who-signed-who-didnt-2021-4">restrictive voting laws</a> being enacted across the country. <a href="https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/research-reports/voting-laws-roundup-december-2021">The Brennan Center for Justice</a>, a <keyword id="11899820" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="law" source="Orion">law</keyword> and public policy non-profit, reported in December that over 440 bills with provisions that restrict <keyword id="11899852" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="voting" source="Orion">voting</keyword> access were introduced in all but one state last year. </p><p>Altogether, there were 34 restrictive voting access laws passed in 19 states in 2021, according to the Brennan Center. </p><p>In Wisconsin, two voters sued with the help from the Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty, a conservative group, to block the use of drop boxes for absentee ballots. A Waukesha judge ruled in their favor, but an appellate court ruled to allow the use of the drop boxes for the February primary election since it was so close, the Journal-Sentinel reported. </p><p>The state's Supreme Court took over the case and on Friday, in a 4 to 3 ruling, kept the appellate court's ruling to allow the use of the ballot drop boxes in the February election but denied a request to extend that for the April 5 general election, <a href="https://www.fox6now.com/news/drop-boxes-not-allowed-election-april-5-wisconsin-supreme-court">the Associated Press</a> reported. </p><p>The ruling would apply to the April election and onward, but the court has not ruled on the underlying case, which seeks to ban the boxes entirely, the Journal-Sentinel reported.</p><p>A verdict is expected in the upcoming weeks or months, the Journal-Sentinel reported.</p><p>The ruling also prohibits the delivery of absentee ballots by a third party in the April election. Barbara Beckert, director of the Milwaukee office of Disability Rights Wisconsin, told the Journal-Sentinel this could disenfranchise disabled voters who need help filling out and delivering their ballots. </p><p>"People who cannot get out of bed, people who cannot move their arms, people who are paralyzed, people who do not have hands — they must have someone else assist them with returning their ballot," Beckert said. </p><p>Voters can still have their ballots delivered by someone else in next week's primary election. </p><p>The four Justices who voted to block the use of the drop boxes were elected with the help of Republicans and the three dissenters were elected with the help of Democrats, the Journal-Sentinel reported.</p>
