The Enforcement Directorate has issued fresh summons to American millionaire <keyword id="271260" type="General" weightage="90" keywordseo="neville-roy-singham" source="Orion">Neville Roy Singham</keyword> for questioning in connection with a <keyword id="6355008" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="money-laundering" source="Orion">money laundering</keyword> investigation linked to online news portal <keyword id="10731773" type="General" weightage="70" keywordseo="newsclick" source="Orion">NewsClick</keyword>, official sources said Thursday. The businessman, who is accused of spreading Chinese propaganda in India, is stated to be currently based in Shanghai, China. The <keyword id="12163" type="General" weightage="30" keywordseo="ed" source="Orion">ED</keyword> has issued fresh summons to <keyword id="213658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="singham" source="Orion">Singham</keyword> under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). This is a fresh notice issued to him after the agency got issued Letters Rogatory (LR) from a local court seeking to record his statement, the sources said. The summons have been sent to Singham on his email id and through the Chinese government channels, after the ED routed them through the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). This is understood to be second summons issued to Singham by the ED after one was issued last year after the investigation was launched in 2021. Singham's name hit the headlines again few months back in a New York Times article. The Delhi Police, following this news piece and some "evidence" shared by ED, had also filed a FIR against him and the founders of NewsClick after this news report came to light. In a statement issued to The Hindu newspaper in October, Singham had said that the language used in the FIR filed by the Special Cell of Delhi Police "strongly suggests" that the claims were "influenced by misinformation from an article published by The New York Times." "The NYT intentionally chose not to publish all the factual rebuttals that I provided to them on July 22, 2023, prior to their publication date," Singham had charged. He also rejected the allegation of fraudulent infusion of funds through a "complex web of several entities" as mentioned in the FIR and in the NYT article. The New York Times report claimed that NewsClick was part of a global network that received funding from Singham, who allegedly works closely with the Chinese government media machine. The Enforcement Directorate had first raided the premises of NewsClick in Saidulajab area of the national capital in September, 2021 on charges of money laundering. The agency has recorded the statements of more than 25 people in this case, including that of NewsClick founder and Editor-in-chief Prabir Purkayastha. It last year attached a flat in south Delhi's Saket worth Rs 4.52 crore, which is linked to Purkayastha apart from fixed deposits worth Rs 41 lakh as part of this investigation. NewsClick had said the allegations being made against it "by certain political actors and sections of the media are unfounded and without basis in fact or law".

The Rohit Shetty-directed cop drama was originally scheduled for a release on March 24 last year, but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. In a statement, the makers said Shetty attended a meeting with Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday and decided to push the April release date owing to the situation in the state. "The Honorable Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Mr Uddhav Thackeray had a discussion with director Rohit Shetty yesterday. But are Indian filmmakers fully harnessing the potential of cinematic universes? Let’s find out. <h2>What’s a cinematic universe?</h2>A cinematic universe allows for expansive storytelling, where characters can evolve across multiple films, and plotlines can interweave to create a grand narrative arc. There’s no better example that the <keyword id="19985514" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Marvel-Cinematic-Universe" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Marvel Cinematic Universe" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Marvel Cinematic Universe">Marvel Cinematic Universe</keyword> (<keyword id="20189664" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="MCU" source="keywords">MCU</keyword>), where each major hero got their own or co-starred movies, before all the Avengers reuniting in Avengers: Endgame (2019). The build-up to this 2019 blockbuster was hugely successful, with the earliest storyline of Iron Man dating back to 2008. It was followed by the 23 movies including the Thor trilogy, Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain America films, Black Panther, Spider-man, Doctor Strange etc. The anticipation built over years of interconnected films repeatedly drew audiences back to theatres, creating a loyal fan base and a secure investment for filmmakers. The MCU, despite the recent setbacks, continues to be one of the most successful film series. Avengers has the best average world-wide gross out of all MCU film series, with an average of nearly $1.9 billion per film. Hence, the appeal of cinematic universes lies in their ability to build complex worlds that draw audiences back time and again, creating a sense of anticipation for how stories will unfold and interconnect. The Lokesh Cinematic Universe started with Kaithi (2019) and established itself with Vikram (2022). All of the films in this shared universe are inspired by popular folk-legends. While Stree took inspiration from Naale Baa of Karnataka, where people would write the phrase on walls to prevent the entry of a malevolent spirit into their homes. Bhediya was inspired by Arunachal Pradesh's legend of a shape-shifting werewolf (Yapum), who wants to protect the jungle, even if he or she has to kill somebody. Munjya, which surprised the trade pundits and audiences alike, focuses on the Konkani legend of munjya. Varun Dhawan will also make a cameo appearance reprising his role of Bhaskar from Bhediya. <h2>Can Indian Cinema sustain this trend?</h2>Unlike the MCU which is based on existing comic books, the majority of these Indian projects and characters have no reference point and hence, concepts have to be established from scratch. Moreover, it is possible that the audiences may not readily embrace new and unfamiliar characters. Another significant hurdle is the high cost associated with these ventures. A good chunk of their budgets goes into VFX and the subsequent creation of intellectual properties or IPs. When news around Brahmastra’s humongous budget of 410 crores was doing the rounds, Ranbir Kapoor was quick to clarify that it was allocated for the entire trilogy, and not just for Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva. Cinematic Universes in India face an additional barrier of independent distributors, where the trajectory of a franchise is lopsidedly dependent on the success of the studio’s latest offerings. For instance, there were reports of Tiger Vs Pathaan being shelved, following the lukewarm reception of Tiger 3. <h2>Can Indian cinema witness a commercially successful cinematic universe?</h2>Cinematic universes can flourish in India as they have in Hollywood, only if they are treated as long-term investments to be made over multiple movies and decades. It is regrettable that a nation with such a rich literary and cultural history barely has any good films rooted in its culture. There is immense potential for stories rooted in regional Indian folklore and literature, and it continues to remain underutilised. However, it is important to note that Maddock’s Supernatural Universe is a promising start towards bringing to the audience stories that are grounded in our country’s culture. However, the movies in this universe have been a roller coaster journey for the audience in terms of quality. As Stree 2 prepares for release, there is hope that it will continue to build on this success and pave the way for more culturally grounded cinematic universes in India. While the concept of cinematic universes is still relatively new in Indian cinema, it holds great promise. If nurtured with patience and passion, these universes could become great assets for the industry, offering audiences compelling narratives, and the studios substantial returns.

Beyond Stree 2: Exploring the potential of Indian Cinematic Universes

A few days back, we told you about the release of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/The-motion-poster-of-Ki-Ka-is-here/articleshow/50534086.cms">motion poster</a> of R. Balki’s upcoming movie <keyword id="3018653" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ki-Ka">Ki &amp; Ka</keyword>, starring <keyword id="2165" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kareena-Kapoor">Kareena Kapoor</keyword> Khan and <keyword id="114453" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Arjun-Kapoor">Arjun Kapoor</keyword> in the lead roles. The poster showed Kareena tying a mangalsutra around Arjun Kapoor’s neck, while the tagline said that streeling (female) and pulling (male) is the same thing. 
 
It pretty much gave us the idea that Arjun, who plays Kabir would be a house husband while Kareena, who plays Kia, would be the one minting money in the big bad world out there. Now, the official trailer of the movie is here, and we couldn’t be more correct about the storyline of the movie. 
 
The trailer starts with someone asking Kabir if Kia is the man in their relationship, to which he says that even though in the Indian culture, a man means someone who earns the bread of the family, in their case, it’s just the opposite. 
 
The scene then moves to Kia, who is the marketing manager of a big corporate house, and is expecting quick promotions in the near future. When Ki and Ka talk about their future, Ka, i.e Kabir reveals that he wants to be like his mom, who, to Ki, i.e Kia’s surprise was a housewife. 
Kabir then clarifies that he is a normal man, who just wants to stay away from the rat race in his professional career. 
 
We also meet Swaroop Sampat and Rajit Kapur, who play Kia and Kabir’s family. As the two get married, the famous mangalsutra scene arrives, along with some steamy scenes between the two stars. 
 That Kabir likes to cook is evident from the trailer, as he makes tea, breakfast and dinner for his working wife, while asking money from her to manage the house. However, he can beat some goons in pure macho style too, a stereotypical must for a <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> hero after all, but in the next scene, he wears red sandals as Kareena plays the lead in their couple dance. 
 
Good, different and fun, but even the movie that talks about breaking the stereotypes somehow manages to establish them again, in a role reversal manner though. 
 
Why does Kabir take off his wife’s sandals as she is too tired to take them off herself after a hectic day at work? Why is he the one who makes the breakfast as she sleeps soundly? Why doesn’t she care about his headache when she is in the mood to do it? 
 
These questions make us think if Balki meant to just reverse the roles amongst genders and not show gender equality through this movie, which could have been path breaking, but sadly, isn’t? 
 
Nonetheless, the chemistry between Kareena and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Watch-Varun-Dhawan-and-Arjun-Kapoors-real-introductory-film/articleshow/47526025.cms">Arjun</a> looks sizzling, and it’s after quite some time that Kareena would be seen delivering a performance and not just being in the movie for the sake of glamour. Remember <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Box-Office-Singham-Returns-Manages-A-Smashing-Weekend/articleshow/40367987.cms">Singham Returns</a>, Gabbar Is Back and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Just-Three-More-Days-For-The-Trailer-Of-Bajrangi-Bhaijaan/articleshow/47676499.cms">Bajrangi Bhaijaan</a>, anyone? Even though the first trailer didn’t give us any glimpse of the role that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Jaya-and-Amitabh-Bachchan-shoot-for-Ki-and-Ka-inside-Jalsa/articleshow/48512138.cms">Jaya and Amitabh Bachchan</a> would be playing in the movie, it does manage to raise the curiosity levels to some extent.
