Mumbai may witness less intense showers from August 6, says Indian Meteorological Department

Late Thursday, the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) received the Delta Plus positive sample reports of a 60-year-old woman from the eastern suburbs of the city, who had passed away on July 24. Prior to that, the first patient of Delta Plus in the state -- an 80-year-old man -- had expired in Ratnagiri on June 25, said the officials. On Wednesday, the Maharashtra Health Department had pegged the number of Delta Plus variant patients in the state at 65 till date, as per data from the Institute of Genomics Integrative Biology lab. Among these 65, the highest 13 are from Jalgaon, 12 from Ratnagiri, 11 from Mumbai, six each in Thane and Pune, three in Palghar, two each in Raigad, Nanded, and Gondia, and one each from Sindhudurg, Aurangabad, Kolhapur, Sangli, Beed, Nandurbar, Akola, and Chandrapur. The patients include 33 women and 32 men, and a whopping 33 cases -- or nearly half -- of those infected are in the 19-45 age group, while 17 are 46-60 years and seven in above-60 age group. As a precaution, the Health Department has started searching for the close contacts of these infectees on a war footing, their travel history, vaccination status, recent medical status and other relevant details to prevent more infections, said the officials. Mumbai, Mar 8 () With the COVID-19 pandemic putting a huge strain on healthcare sector in the state, Maharashtra Finance Minister Ajit Pawar on Monday announced of a Rs 12,500 crore package for health-related institutions in the Budget. Rs 7,500 crore would be spent over four years on upgradation of health institutions while Rs 5,000 crore would be spent for improving the quality of health services in municipal councils and nagar panchayats, he said. "Under both the schemes, Rs 800 crore each will be spent in the financial year 2021-22," Pawar said. New medical colleges will be set up in Sindhudurg, Osmanabad, Nashik, Raigad and Satara district in the public- private-partnership mode, he said. "The Centre is also promoting PPP model for setting up government medical colleges. These colleges are attached to hospitals as well. It means with every new college, a 700-bed hospital is coming up in these areas which will predominantly cater to the economically weaker sections," the finance minister said. Cancer diagnosis facilities will be set up at 150 hospitals and physiotherapy and occupational therapy colleges will be set up in all 17 medical colleges in phases. (Updating with latest weather report) Mumbai, Jun 3 () Severe cyclonic storm 'Nisarga' hit Maharashtra coast near Alibaug in Raigad district with a wind speed upto 120 kmph, but weakened into a cyclonic storm in the evening, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday. IMD's regional centre in Mumbai said the "severe cyclonic storm" crossed Maharashtra close to south of Alibaug with a maximum sustained speed of 100-110 kmph gusting to 120 kmph between 12:30 pm and 2:30 pm. "The system weakened into a cyclonic storm and lay centered at 16.30 hrs near lat 19.0 deg N and Long 73.7 deg E (Pune District) over interior Maharashtra about 100 km east north east of Alibaug, 90 km east of Mumbai (Colaba) and 50 km north northwest of Pune," it said in the statement. Earlier in the evening, an IMD official had said that the cyclone was moving north-east and was likely to affect Nashik, Dhule and Nandurbar in north Maharashtra apart from north-west part of Pune district. The coastal district of Ratnagiri reported 38 mm rainfall since 8.30 am on Wednesday, the IMD bulletin said. Colaba and Santacruz weather stations in Mumbai reported 46 mm and 22 mm rainfall during the same period, the statement said. Colaba and Santacruz stations reported maximum wind speeds of 50 kmph and 58 kmph, respectively, the IMD said. The department has predicted that it is very likely that Palghar will receive "heavy rain" (64.5-115.5 mm) at isolated places on Thursday. It was also "very likely" that Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, which also came under the influence of the cyclone as did Palghar, will receive "light to moderate rains" (2.5 mm to 64.4 mm) on Thursday. Nashik, predicted to be hit by the cyclone, is very likely to receive "heavy rain at isolated places" on Thursday, while Pune may see "light to moderate rain", the IMD said. "Gale wind, speed reaching 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph, is prevailing over eastcentral Arabian sea and off north Maharashtra coast (Raigad, Mumbai and adjoining Thane), 60-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph along and off Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Palghar and remaining areas of Thane," the statement said. The IMD also advised fishermen to not venture into the eastcentral and northeast Arabian sea and along and off Karnataka-Goa-Maharashtra-south Gujarat coast during the next 12 hours. ENM KRK KRK

'Nisarga' weakened into cyclonic storm, moved towards Pune:IMD

New Delhi, June 2 (IANS) A week after a raging cyclone wreaked havoc in West Bengal, the country is now bracing to face another cyclone which is headed towards the coastline of Maharashtra and Gujarat. "Nisarga" currently lies as a depression 490 km from Mumbai, 280 km from Goa's capital city and 710 km from Surat district in Gujarat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that the depression intensifed into a deep depression at 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday. It is now slated to further turn into a cyclonic storm in 12 hours and then into a severe cyclonic storm in subsequent 12 hours. Low pressure, depression and deep depression are the first three levels used by the IMD to classify cyclones based on their intensity. It is likely to cross north Maharashtra and south Gujarat coasts between Harihareshwar town in Raigad district and Daman as a severe cyclonic storm on Wednesday. IMD's Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra has said that the severe cyclonic storm will have a wind speed of 90-105 kmph when it crosses the coast on June 3. According to Roxy Mathew Koll, a climate scientist at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, it will be the first-ever cyclone in recorded history to hit the Maharashtra coast in June. Whereas, as per another researcher at the same institute, 'Nisarga' will be only the second cyclone in recorded history that will be hitting the Maharashtra coast in the pre-monsoon season i.e. April-June. "The one and only cyclone in the past that hit Maharashtra coast in the pre-monsoon season was May 1961 cyclone," Vineet Kumar said. The IMD Director General also said that the cyclonic storm will affect the coastal districts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, more than Gujarat and neighbouring states. "As per our predictions, Maharashtra coastal districts like Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Thane, Raigad, Mumbai and Palgarh will be more affected by it." The Central Water Commission has sounded flood alert for Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Thane, Mumbai, Palgarh and Nasik districts of Maharashtra, Daman district of union territory of Daman and Dui, Silvassa district of Dadar and Nagar Haveli and Valsad district of Gujarat. There could be inundation in low lying areas, townships, and city areas. Wind speed could also cause damage to trees, telephone, and electric poles, Mohapatra warned. Due to its influence, the east central Arabian Sea and south east Arabian Sea is currently rough.
