And the combination of its strength and stretch is exactly why scientists are obsessed with cloning spider silk. Now, there are seven types of spider silks, but one has caught the eye of scientists worldwide.</p><p><strong>Randy Lewis: </strong>It's called dragline silk, and it's the silk that they use to make the framework of the web and the radii, but they also, the reason it's called dragline is that whenever they walk they leave the silk behind.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> This is Randy Lewis, a molecular biologist at Utah State University known for his pioneering efforts in producing synthetic spider silk. Now, Lewis and other scientists say that silk is so strong, it could be used in advances in artificial ligaments, surgical sutures, and hernia meshes. While other spider threads rely on one protein, this one combines two, with protein structures that build and lock onto each other, almost like Legos. This builds up the strand's strength and elasticity, with bonds so strong even water can't penetrate them. But you can't just take these silks from <keyword id="23924" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Spiders">spiders</keyword>. Spiders are actually notoriously bad at spinning their own threads. They'll make strands that are inconsistent in diameter, making them fine for this, but not necessarily for this. So Lewis and his team have had to turn to other methods.</p><p><strong>Lewis:</strong> In terms of the spider silk protein, we've got to find a cheap way to make it.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> Randy and his team took the spider silk gene from their lab and decided to transfer it into other organisms to see if protein production could happen through other processes.</p><p><strong>Lewis:</strong> Now, we started with bacteria, because they're easy, they're fast.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> But researchers also tried to see if they could grow it in plants like alfalfa or insert the spider-silk-laden bacteria into goats.</p><p><strong>Lewis:</strong> We moved the gene from our bacteria into goats, and so they produce the spider silk protein in the milk, and we collect the milk and purify the spider silk protein from that.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> But the most efficient method they discovered? Silkworms. This method is still being used today, with Lewis' lab both making and spinning synthetic spider thread. The next step is actually using it.</p><p><strong>Lewis:</strong> We know that that certainly has possibilities for artificial ligaments and artificial tendons, because we know that we can make material right now that's stronger than a human tendon for the same diameter.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> And it's not just tendons and ligaments. Researchers have been experimenting with using spider threads to reconnect severed nerves. Traditionally, nerve repair is often limited to gaps smaller than three centimeters, using transplanted nerves or hollow conduits to fill the space. But spider silk can actually extend beyond that length without becoming brittle and breaking.</p><p><strong>Christine Radtke:</strong> This makes it very, very special.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> This is Christine Radtke, who led a team of researchers to develop a technique using spider silk to connect damaged nerves.</p><p><strong>Radtke:</strong> We had a gap in a nerve, and in that gap we put in longitudinal direction of a spider silk, and we could see nerve regeneration over that gap.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> The team tested this method on sheep, since they found that sheep's nerves closely replicated those of humans, and they discovered that the nerve cells would use the spider silk almost like a trellis, growing along the thread.</p><p><strong>Radtke:</strong> And on spider silk, they go crazy. They proliferate. That's exactly what we need for repair. For regeneration. So, if the extremity is moving, it doesn't rupture, and on the other side, it's flexible as well, and that's exactly what we need. And the Food and Drug Administration still have yet to approve the biomaterial for use in the medical industry and beyond. Some simply see it as risky.</p><p><strong>Radtke:</strong> The next step will be that we have to do clinical studies and obviously as well financing.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> Spider silk is also extremely expensive to make, so businesses would need to discover another cheaper way to make it. So, all this research, and then nothing?</p><p><strong>Lewis:</strong> I think the whole idea of being able to design a fiber with properties that we want it to have rather than just taking what the spiders have given us so far is also a big deal.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> And that work is still happening. Other startups are looking to use the silk in medicinal fields, military applications, and even as biofabrics for things like bulletproof clothes. So scientists can continue to learn from cloning spider silks and designing the proteins knowing that spider silks do hold a promising place in the future.</p>

But making this silk isn't easy. Extracting enough lotus silk for one scarf can take two months, and the final product can cost 10 times as much as regular silk. So just how is it made, and what makes it <keyword id="9073273" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="so-expensive">so expensive</keyword>?</p><p>Phan Thi Thuan's family have been making silk for generations, growing and harvesting the threads from silkworms themselves to create luxury garments. But making lotus silk is different. Silk usually comes from silkworms. They're kept on wide trays and need to be fed almost 24 hours a day with mulberry leaves.</p><p>The caterpillars delicately spin threads to create their cocoons, and it can take hundreds of silkworms to make a kilo of silk. But while the insects require careful looking after, they do most of the hard work themselves. The key difference between the bright yellow silk and the paler lotus version is that every single strand of lotus silk must be extracted by hand. Narrator: Each thread of lotus silk starts with the stem of the lotus flower.</p><p>The lotus is Vietnam's national flower and a plant that's grown across the country. While this <keyword id="6407740" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="fabric">fabric</keyword> has been made for years in Myanmar, Phan Thi Thuan only started experimenting with this fiber in 2017. Narrator: Once the stem is selected and picked by hand, the silk inside can be extracted. Each stem contains a minuscule amount of thin, sticky fibers, which must be rolled together and dried.</p><p>The threads need to be processed within 24 hours while they're still wet; otherwise, they'll break. And so harvesting has to be done each day. And the lotus plants are only available to harvest between April and October. Once you've gone through the hard work of extracting these fibers, they're incredibly delicate, too. Narrator: Once dry, these threads are carefully weighed down and delicately hand-spooled. Then they're put into the loom.</p><p>These fibers are fragile, but once woven, can be as durable as traditional silk. Phan has a team of 20 workers creating these fibers each day, allowing them to produce 10 to 20 scarves each month. But when a 25-centimeter scarf can sell for just over $200, the hard work is worth it. The final product is unlike any other fiber. It's soft like silk, breathable like linen, and slightly elastic.</p><p>These luxurious traits have made it popular with tourists searching for rare souvenirs. It's also recently been picked up by international fashion brands searching for new luxury fiber. But its scale has been limited, as there are still few trained in the making of these silk threads. But despite the work involved, Phan Thi Thuan is hoping that this skill could one day grow to become a larger industry.</p>

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Not a physical newspaper, of course - the SR Courier, as it's being called, would run online and feature stories relevant to the Silk Road marketplace and community.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The effort is being spearheaded by the pseudonymous user <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raoul_Duke">Raoul Duke</a>, who suggests that the paper could have regular features like horoscopes, opinion pieces, scammer alerts to prevent users from getting ripped off, and tales of above and beyond service from SR merchants.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">This is still in the works as users figure out how/what a Silk Road "newspaper" should be. <p>Last week, Silk Road was seized by the <keyword id="6355946" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="FBI">FBI</keyword> and 29-year-old <keyword id="1889140" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Ross-Ulbricht">Ross Ulbricht</keyword> was charged with running the virtual drug warehouse. His lawyer has since denied all charges, but the story has set off <a href="http://gawker.com/silk-road-arrests-in-seattle-britain-sweden-as-crackd-1442440730">a string of arrests in the last week all over the world</a>, Gawker reports.</p>
<p><span><a href="http://gawker.com/silk-road-arrests-in-seattle-britain-sweden-as-crackd-1442440730"></a></span><span style="line-height: 1.5em; color: #000000;">In Seattle, the FBI arrested 40-year-old Steven Lloyd Sadler of Seattle, who operated on Silk Road under the username "Nod" and was an alleged Silk Road darling, dealing cocaine, meth, and heroin, <a href="http://krebsonsecurity.com/2013/10/feds-arrest-alleged-top-silk-road-drug-seller/">according to Brian Krebs</a>. Sadler's arrest followed the arrest of one of his customers in Alaska. </span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><a href="http://www.aftonbladet.se/senastenytt/ttnyheter/inrikes/article17617871.ab">In Sweden, two men were arrested</a> for selling cannabis on Silk Road, while <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-24443216">three</a></span><span style="color: #000000; line-height: 1.5em;"><a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-24443216"> men were arrested in the UK</a>. </span><span style="color: #000000; line-height: 1.5em; font-size: 15px;">British authorities say more arrests are coming, according to the BBC.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">One of the reasons Silk Road was able to stay under wraps for so long was due to its use of Bitcoin, an online currency that is dependent from any regulated currency. It was also only accessible using a special Web browser called TOR, which was supposed to let users anonymously surf the Internet.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The FBI has already seized about 26,000 Bitcoins belonging to Silk Road customers and is <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2013/oct/07/fbi-bitcoin-silk-road-ross-ulbricht">still searching for over 600,000 Bitcoins</a>, worth $80 million, that Ulbricht himself is believed to have amassed while running the site, according to The Guardian.</span></p>

More Arrests Have Been Made In Connection With Online Drug Market Silk Road, And Authorities Say More Are Coming

<p>Drug-starved Internet users were able to rely on <keyword id="621419" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Silk-Road">Silk Road</keyword> to get their fill of whatever vice they wanted until today, when the anonymous marketplace was <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/silk-road-seized-ross-ulbricht-arrested-2013-10">seized and shut down by the FBI</a>.</p>
<p>But the Silk Road is just one of a few black markets online. It certainly took almost all of the spotlight, but that never stopped others from continuing to operate in the background. Now that the slot for top dog is vacated, let's meet the contenders for the title of new go-to drug marketplace.</p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">First up is Black Market Reloaded, or BMR. <p>BMR's administrator, who calls himself "Blackopy" told site visitors that the site is going offline for a while and will refund their money and protect their accounts, according to photo of the forum post published by Atlantis Blog.</p>
<p>Like Silk Road, BMR sold all sorts of illegal things, particularly <keyword id="14721" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Drugs">drugs</keyword>. BMR was also known for selling weapons.</p>
<p>This follows news earlier this month that the FBI <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/silk-road-seized-ross-ulbricht-arrested-2013-10">seized and shut down Silk Road.</a> In arresting the people allegedly running Silk Road, authorities gained <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ross-ulbricht-silk-road-tor-2013-10">a treasure trove of information</a> on the criminal network involved.</p>
<p>But that's not why BMR closed. Instead it was a technical issue, Blackopy said.</p>
<p>When Silk Road closed, its customers flocked to BMR, causing BMR to have to expand and use web servers owned by a third-party service, BMR's administrator told users.</p>
<p>Someone at the third-party service leaked some website code and the owners of BMR closed down as a precaution to keep the leaked code from causing damage, like revealing their identities or allowing hackers to steal stuff. BMR promises it will be back, though.</p>
<p>In the meantime, there's still at least <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/silk-road-alternatives-2013-10">one other black market site around</a>, Sheep Marketplace. We'll see how it fairs.</p>

<p>The <keyword id="334157" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Reddit">Reddit</keyword> community built around Silk Road, <a href="http://www.reddit.com/r/silkroad">located here</a>, is an active hub of conversation for all things Silk Road - reviews of drugs, strategies on how to best send weed through the mail, etc. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">But in light of the seizure and shutdown, the Silk Road subreddit has been cordoned off to the public.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Only registered users who are members of the subreddit can browse its contents and make new posts. Where it used to be a public-facing community, it's now members-only.</span></p>
