Covered by the tractor trolleys, the central stage of the protest site at Singhu resonated with the words of the Gurus (Gurbani) as the farmers who are addressing the gathering included them in their speeches. As the morning sun rose, the sloganeering against the farming laws began by the protesters. On the order end, the briefing of the security forces have also begun at the border to ensure that the peace and harmony remains intact while the protests continue. The farmers on Sunday rejected a proposal by the Centre to shift all the agitation to Delhi's Burari ground and lift the blockade at the borders. The farmers said the offer of talks is conditional and they will not move to the Burari. <ul class="summary-list"><li>I went to public school in Ohio, and now my three kids are going to school in New Delhi. </li><li>There's a lottery system to get into the most sought-after schools, which puts pressure on parents.</li></ul>My foray into the Indian school system began with education — not my children's, but my own. I met my husband during my study-abroad semester in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/india-g20-summit-cardboard-cutout-monkeys-scare-macaques-new-delhi-2023-9">New Delhi</a>. We got married in 2010 and made our home there. We now have three sons, aged 10, 8, and 4, who are enrolled in an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/school-classrooms-around-the-world-2017-7">Indian school</a>.I grew up attending a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/best-public-high-schools-in-america-2019-8">public school </a>in suburban <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/glad-i-accidentally-went-to-ohio-university-instead-of-florida-2023-10">Ohio</a>. My experience living in the megacity of New Delhi and navigating the school system here vastly differs from what I grew up with.Here are my firsthand perspectives on the disparities between schools in India and the US.<h2>Formal schooling starts early</h2>One of the most striking differences I noticed is the age at which formal schooling begins for children in India.In our case, my kids started in a formal pre-K program when they were 3 years old. The immense demand for quality education, especially in India's cities, where competition for school admission is fierce, drives this early start. This leads to the prevailing notion that if you don't enroll your child in the formal school system early, you might miss the window of opportunity to secure a spot in one of the more coveted institutions later.<h2>There's a lot of pressure to get into some schools</h2>School admissions in New Delhi are a high-stakes endeavor, unlike the public-school system I grew up with in the US, where your address mostly dictates which school you attend.The admissions process here is complex and multifaceted, incorporating factors such as proximity to the school and alumni status. But schools also consider things like parents' education levels, giving preference to better-educated parents with the idea that it may signal the family prioritizes education. Even factors like a child's gender are taken into consideration. Historically in India, many families prioritized the education of sons over that of daughters because the sons would continue to care for their parents in old age. Schools, in awarding additional points in admissions consideration to girls, are trying to advocate for girls' education and correct that longstanding gender bias. After students meet these criteria, schools select them through lotteries. The acceptance rates at some of the most sought-after schools are staggeringly low, hovering at around 1%. The pressure on parents to secure their child's admission begins months, if not years, in advance, and this intense competition can be incredibly stressful.<h2>There are more one-day school holidays</h2>I remember growing up with leisurely summer and winter breaks that ranged from three weeks to three months in length. My kids, on the other hand, only enjoy a six-week summer hiatus from mid-May to late June, and a 10-day break in January.However, the Indian school calendar compensates with frequent one-day holidays throughout the year. These single-day "chuttis"— "holidays" in Hindi — encompass an array of religious and public holidays, including Eid, Christmas, Buddha's Birthday, Mahatma Gandhi's birthday, Diwali, various Hindu gods' birthdays, Sikh gurus' birthdays, and national holidays such as Independence Day and Republic Day.<h2>My kids are learning several languages</h2>Most Indian schools adopt a bilingual approach to education. In our case, instructors teach our kids in English, our kids have studied Hindi since kindergarten, and they'll begin learning a third foreign language in the fourth grade. This multilingual approach reflects the diverse linguistic landscape of India and prepares students to communicate effectively in both a country as diverse as India and in the wider world.<h2>There's more emphasis on STEM subjects</h2>Indian schools place significant emphasis on STEM subjects. While they do teach basic grammar, there is often less emphasis on reading full books as part of the curricula.In my children's English textbooks, there are excerpts from works such as "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," "Treasure Island," and "The Jungle Book," but teachers assign few full novels as reading. In contrast, in his environmental-studies class, my fifth grader is delving into topics including human and plant anatomy that I didn't encounter until my freshman year of college in the US. This focus on STEM subjects sometimes comes at the cost of arts and humanities education, requiring parents to supplement their children's learning in these areas outside school.While navigating the Indian education system — and the education system in any country, for that matter — has its own set of challenges, our family has embraced this adventure. We are excited to see how it shapes our children's futures, and opportunities for growth, learning, and adaptation.

Born in 1666, he found himself pushed into the role of a leader at the age of nine after his father — Guru Tegh Bahadur — was beheaded for refusing to convert to Islam. A little over thirty years down the line, he made his first pivotal move to cement <keyword id="65418" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sikhism">Sikhism</keyword> as a religion. He established an armed force of dedicated Sikh warriors called the <keyword id="26937" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Khalsa">Khalsa</keyword>. They fought 14 wars under his leadership. New Delhi, Apr 22 () Describing religion as "probably the most powerful means for mobilising human conscience to serve common good", over 20 spiritual gurus of different faiths on Wednesday jointly urged people to "come together as a singular force" to overcome COVID-19 pandemic.They also strongly condemned unscientific beliefs and practices being propagated in the name of religion, exposing thousands to the virus and vitiating "public discourse with half-truths, falsehoods, conspiracy theories and doomsday narratives". "Today, the spread of coronavirus provides a testament to the oneness and inter-connectedness of the human family where the well-being of one is dependent on the well-being of all."As the past few weeks have shown, among the biggest obstacles that stand in our way as we strive to find a way out of this crisis, is the tendency to be selfish or self-centred whether as an individual, a community or a nation," the statement said, "This tendency has proven to be a dangerous and life-threatening delusion," it added. As many as 22 leaders and representatives of various religious and interfaith organisations in the country issued the joint statement on the constructive role religion should play in uniting people of all faiths in the fight against coronavirus, said the Baha'i office of public affairs, that initiated this initiative. The statement was issued in response to the urgent need for all religions in the country to "speak with one voice" in emphasising the importance of unity, service to the common good and the need to follow scientific prescriptions at such a difficult time, the Baha'i office of public affairs said. Calling for clarity of thought, the religious leaders emphasised that true religion is in harmony with science and reason and it does not endorse superstitious and fanatical beliefs. Discussing the principle of oneness of religion, they said this principle provides "the foundation on which people of all religions can learn to draw upon a common spiritual heritage to fight collective challenges" and to reject religious prejudices which, as recent events in the country have shown, can flare up during times of crisis and aggravate social tensions."To be religious then is to be an active servant of humankind here and now, to use one's talents and capacities to address contemporary challenges and to contribute to the well-being of all without distinction," the religious leaders said. No greater embodiments of this spirit of selfless and sacrificial service can be found than those doctors, health workers, policemen, media persons and government functionaries who, at great risk to their personal lives, are carrying out their duties," they said in a joint statement."Finally, a word of clarification is in order about the cases of religious fanaticism, superstition and contempt for science that are being expressed in the name of religion in the context of the pandemic," it said. "These have done incalculable harm not only by exposing thousands to the virus but also by vitiating public discourse with half-truths, falsehoods, conspiracy theories and doomsday narratives which hang as a thick cloud of gloom over the hearts and minds of people and obscure clarity of thought," the statement said. "Our faith in an all-loving creator and in the nobility of the human race convinces us that humanity will emerge from this ordeal stronger and more united, with a deeper appreciation of its inherent oneness and inter-connectedness," the religious guru said in the statement.
