The Nasdaq listed <keyword id="113494" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sify" source="Orion">Sify</keyword> Technologies Ltd will be setting up 200 MW capacity data centres over the next four years with a mix of hyperscale and retail facilities, said a company official. The new data centres will come up in Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru where the demand is expected to be more both for colocation and cloud space given the concentration of financial traffic. Entering the data centre market in 2000, Sify over the years has built and operates 10 carrier-neutral data centres, currently offering more than 70 MW at Vashi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Airoli, Noida, Rabale, Hyderabad and Kolkata. Through CloudCover, Sify also services a network of 49 data centres across India. The company said on 21.9.2021, its first data centre at Vashi completed 21 years of uninterrupted operations. "Sify has pioneered and set high standards in the Data Centre space in India ever since the launch of country's first concurrently-maintainable data centre at the Infotech Park in Vashi, Mumbai in September 2000," Raju Vegesna, Chairman said. Sify Technologies to set up new data centres in Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru

Yet, private equity investments in the sector remained muted. In the first nine months of FY24, i.e. April to December 2023, <keyword id="189346" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pe-investments" source="Orion">PE investments</keyword> in the sector registered a 26% decline, says a report by Anarock. Investor activity remained tepid due to geopolitical uncertainties as well as a high interest rate environment. The size of domestic investments however declined to 14% of total capital flows to $360 million as compared to $717 million in the same period last year. "Domestic alternate investment funds (AIFs) have seen lower activity levels as their favoured asset class — residential real estate debt – witnessed lower demand for high-cost funds. Strong residential pre-sales and an accommodative stance by state-owned banks have led to reduced demand for capital from the more expensive AIFs," said Shobhit Agarwal, MD &amp; CEO of Anarock Capital. The average ticket size marginally increased to $95 million from $91 million in the same time last year. This is largely due to a mega $1.4 billion deal in which Brookfield India Real Estate Trust REIT and Singapore’s GIC together acquired two commercial assets in Mumbai and Gurugram. The deal also aided the sharp rise in multi-city transactions. Otherwise, Mumbai Metropolitan Region led the transaction league tables in city-specific transactions. The region saw investments flows to the tune of $694 million. Data centers also became an emerging new asset class for investors. Domestic debt funds also showed interest in commercial projects. Varde Partners had invested $91 million in a Hyderabad based project by Phoenix Group. “The sector’s reliance on IT/ITeS diminished, with manufacturing, BFSI, and co-working spaces contributing to resilient demand. Anticipated growth in the IT/ITES sector is expected as more employees shift to working from offices for 3-4 days weekly,” said Anarock. Residential real estate was also one of the key sectors which saw large deals in 9M FY24. HDFC Capital as well as PAG invested over $60 million in CCI Projects and Kalpataru Group respectively. In times when overall flows softened, large deals dominated the scene. Top ten deals accounted for 87% of the total value of PE investments. In the same period last year, they accounted for 76%. While debt capital also flowed in, equity investments are preferred route for PE investors, which is visibly healthy at 84% of total deals.

Real estate hit its highs in 2023 but slipping PE investments a worry

<ul><li><keyword id="14238168" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="cloudextel" source="Orion">CloudExtel</keyword> took over old gas pipelines, excavated and cleaned them and laid over 200 kilometres of fibre in South Bombay. </li><li>The pipeline-turned-telecom assets gave way to their dark fibre leasing business but its co-founder wants to convert it into a full-stack NaaS company. </li><li>“We’re able to build out our network infrastructure and offer that on a service basis to our customers,” <keyword id="6358511" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="bajaj" source="Orion">Bajaj</keyword> told Business Insider <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>. </li></ul>CloudExtel was founded in 2014 but its story had started unfolding much earlier – when The Gilded Age was playing out in British-ruled Bombay and even before electricity was in use. A company called Bombay Gas used to supply gas via pipes to Bombay buildings and to even power street lights. The company stopped gas distribution in the mid-80s and the pipes were lying unused since then. That was until 2014 – when <keyword id="131281" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="kunal-bajaj" source="Orion">Kunal Bajaj</keyword>, a telecom sector veteran and former partner- India director of consulting firm Analysys Mason, was introduced to the promoters of Bombay Gas – the <keyword id="23193" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="hamilton" source="Orion">Hamilton</keyword> and Company group. The firm, which had since diversified into real estate and others, wanted to convert the company’s gas pipelines into telecom assets. As CloudExtel was formed, it took over the old gas pipelines, began excavation, cleaned them up and laid over 200 kilometres of fibre in South Bombay. Since the fibre is laid under footpaths and bridges inside cast-iron pipelines, it provides an added layer of security. The pipeline-turned-telecom assets gave way to the company’s dark fibre leasing business – where the service provider offers the fibre optic infrastructure but the customer operates it. Some of its customers include Airtel, <keyword id="197484" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pgcil" source="Orion">PGCIL</keyword>, Railtel, Sify, Tata Communications and Vodafone Idea. Bajaj, who had seen the market evolve from the bare minimum net speeds of the 2G era to the high-speeds of 3G and 4G, had bigger plans beyond just geographic expansion for the company. He wanted to build a network-as-a-service operation – a model where customers rent networking infrastructure and services through a cloud-like subscription-based model. “So, I came to them with the idea that rather than just thinking about building out a fibre business, we should actually think about building out an entire network-as-a-service (NaaS) full- stack operation,” Bajaj, who is also the co-founder of CloudExtel, told Business Insider India. Unblocking networks While India needs underground fibre – which is tough to lay and maintain amidst the many roadblocks telecom companies encounter, the sector itself faces a multitude of challenges when it comes to providing high-speed data services to an increasingly demanding customer base. India’s large population and its high density in most urban and even semi-urban areas has presented network challenges for <keyword id="6383126" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="telcos" source="Orion">telcos</keyword> and ISPs. And this is the problem that CloudExtel wants to solve. “There is the traditional way of serving these (crowded) areas with the macro sites and large towers. But at some point, those macro sites get completely choked and the capacity limits are reached and telcos need to be able to provide additional capacity in that high-density area. You then need to go from the very top of a tall building with a large site and you need to have a miniaturised site, which is at a lower height closer to where the actual traffic consumption is,” explained Bajaj. In addition to laying over 4,000 kilometres of fibre across cities, CloudExtel added 4,000 small cell sites across 325 cities and towns. In addition, it provides services like virtual networks that take it from providing infrastructure-as-a-service to NaaS. It leverages fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) with single platform end-to-end services that build, plan and maintain networks for telcos and internet service providers that target homes and SMEs. “So we take some of the hardest parts of that telecom network and we build it out on behalf of the telcos, ISPs and content providers. We focus on very difficult-to-solve types of problems, where high-network capacity is required or where it’s very difficult getting fibre into the ground or buildings and homes. We’re able to build out our network infrastructures and offer that on a service basis to our customers,” said Bajaj. CloudExtel believes that a time will come when telecom companies will outsource most or all of their infrastructure needs, paving the way for network-as-a-service or NaaS companies such as themselves. Global players like Cisco and <keyword id="10875" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ibm" source="Orion">IBM</keyword> are also players in the NaaS space. “We are delivering a completely virtualized network to our customers. We can compare it to Amazon Web Services or Google Cloud, which have taken over from companies building, owning and maintaining their own data centres. I'm not saying that the telecom network or the telecom industry is ready to be completely virtualized or share all these stations and microsites, but this is the first step in that process, in that direction,” Bajaj said. A new era beckons CloudExtel has been bootstrapped until now and funded internally off the balance sheets. Even with the substantial set of assets, it still calls itself a startup. “So I still consider ourselves a startup because we have not yet achieved even one-tenth of what we believe we can achieve,” Bajaj said. Even as India is on the cusp of 5G network launches, Bajaj believes that the definition of network speeds is evolving, with more and more new technologies coming in. And infrastructure companies such as CloudExtel will have to stay ahead of the innovation cycle. “We're launching 5G today, but work on 5G actually started 10 years ago. That's kind of the timelines on which this kind of sector really works. 5G is going to be very largely about the ability to deploy small cells and provide dense network capacity and good network signals in very busy or very high traffic areas. That can basically be done on the back of only small cells being put very close to end-customers right on traffic junctions and high-density venues,” Bajaj said. Even as technology evolves, the number of high bandwidth applications like connected TVs, AR and VR-based shopping, in addition to metaverse etc. are multiplying at a rate that is faster than the time taken to build the infrastructure needed to handle it. “I think the biggest challenge we face is we don't have fixed-line infrastructure prominently available in the country. So, with rising capacity requirements and throughput requirements, telcos will always find it difficult to keep up pace with what the industry demands. That was really the genesis of the idea eight years ago,” Bajaj says. This startup is using abandoned gas pipelines from 1800s to ease telecom traffic via network as a service

Just don't count on it getting much smaller. Being a "SIFI" on Wall Street has become the equivalent of receiving a scarlet letter. Especially for non-bank SIFIs, because much of their business is based in activities that do not allow them to profit as much as Wall Street banks.Tuesday's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/general-electric-is-selling-its-12-billion-private-equity-business-2015-6">sale of General Electric's private equity financing</a> business to a Canadian pension is the latest step in GE's quest to de-designate from the government's SIFI list by selling businesses it has valued at nearly $200 billion. Other non-bank SIFIs include insurers MetLife and Prudential Financial, as well as AIG. Regulators have even reportedly considered <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/moneybeat/2015/04/22/is-berkshire-hathaway-a-threat-to-the-financial-system/">including Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway</a> in the category. Both MetLife and Prudential are paying close attention to GE's great un-bundling with hopes that they can also change their lines of business to attract less government attention. But they face tougher odds."MetLife and Prudential can succeed [in escaping SIFI] only if they agree to to do what they won't agree to do: invest only in publicly-traded, high-rated instruments or break into small pieces," says Erik Gordon, a banking and regulation expert and professor at the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business. "Otherwise they are too big and too entwined to escape SIFI."The SIFI list originated in the wake of the financial crisis, as regulators grasped for ways to rein in 'too big to fail' institutions. AIG's share price was last up about 3.89% at around $63.30 in the premarket.<a href="http://carlicahn.com/aig-ceo-letter/">Here's the letter:</a>Dear Peter:It is my experience that in Corporate America, even when all available data points to the same undeniable conclusion and when all stakeholders desire the same mutually beneficial outcome, an external force is often still required to effect meaningful and positive change. This is the current situation in which AIG shareholders find themselves. The company continues to severely underperform its peers and is now facing an increasingly onerous regulatory burden which will only further erode its competitive position. Despite definitive action on the part of Congress and regulators to encourage this company to become smaller and simpler by splitting up, you have shown no sign of urgency and have chosen a "wait and see…for years" strategy void of decisive leadership. As a result AIG consistently trades at a substantial discount to book value. It is a "no-brainer" that the simple act of splitting this company up will greatly enhance shareholder value. Competitive Cost StructureAIG's ROE is below its peers not only because of size and capital constraints, but also because of lack of cost control. You have acknowledged that returns are below peers and must be improved, even going so far as to provide a long-term ROE goal of 10%, which is still below peers. At the same time you have suggested returns would not increase by more than 0.5% per year. Amazingly you have turned the quest for a 10% ROE into a half decade journey. The one thing we do agree on is AIG's lack of competitiveness. Do you honestly think now is not the time for the inevitable AIG transformation? You must be proactive and commit to closing 100% of the ROE gap between AIG and its peers.It is now incumbent upon you to explain why, despite pressure from the stock price, regulators, and shareholders, the company should not take immediate and transformative action. Achieving these two goals in combination with continued share repurchases is the only realistic path to a healthy and competitive company and, more importantly, exceed the potential of any alternative plan. Good Morning, US Futures are looking off 30-40bp, with the S&amp;P taking out yesterday's lows. Angst reigns as Oil drops - and a trio of headlines (Greek Elections, China clamping down on Leverage in Credit, "considerable Time" removal from Fed) all weigh. London is off 1.2% in heavy volume (1.5x normal) as every major sector of the FTSE is off at least 1%. The DAX is off 1% as energy companies retreat - but the Athens stock exchange is off over 11% and Greek yields are out 50bp as political uncertainty mounts - So the EU banks are getting hit for 1.7%. With the Oil drop, Gulf Exchanges under good pressure - Dubai lost 6.6%, Saudi lost 2.5%, Qatar 3.5%, and Abu Dhabi 3.7%. Over in Asia, Shanghai had its biggest drop in 5years on record volumes as China's securities clearing house had tightened the use of corporate bonds as collateral for short-term financing, the Miners knocked Aussie for 1.7% as the price of Iron ore gapped lower again overnight (JPM cut forecasts). Despite the wild move in the Yen in the last 24hours, The Nikkei was off only 70bp. 
The 10YY is coming in, as "Flattener" flows continue to pressure longer-term yields in the USA despite Bunds being flat. The $/Y has broken south of 120 - a key level for it to retake, but the Euro has a bid, pressuring the DXY this AM. With this tailwind for commodities, we have Brent/WTI Crude up 1% (Brent was off 1.5% earlier). Silver is up 1%, and Gold is holding yesterday's late day surge, adding 20bp and over $1200. Natty has been beaten up of late, we are seeing some covering this AM. Grains and Beans are under pressure this AM. Scheduled Catalysts today include NFIB Small Business Optimism at 7:30, UK GDP, US JOLTS Job Openings, Wholesale Inventories and ISM Semiannual Report On Business at 10, and a 3Y auction at 1. We will get SIFI headlines for the Fins today, and API data tonight. 
Some Trends I'm watching: 
· Despite the weakness yesterday, "Growth" stocks only underperformed Value by 17bp. We have a slew of China data tonight (CPI, PPI, New Yuan Loans, Money Supply) - be interesting to see if the "growth" trade outperforms again. (IWO &gt; IWN) 
· Watch the "Gundlach Floor" of 2.2% in the 10YY as "Flattener" trades continue to sell short-term (SHY) to buy 10's (TLT). 
· Despite Rates yesterday, Banks had a great day - An allocator may have been at work, big prints of financial ETFs hit the tape late in the day. In total it looked like about $750mm of financials buying FXO (Alphadex) and IYF. SIFI announcement from the Fed on Bank Capital Requirements today may be a "Buy the News" as a uncertainty is removed. MS and GS your highest levered. 
· Watch the Commodity Rich Exporters - Canada (EWC), Russia (RSX) and Brazil (EWZ). Canada had it's worst loss in 3 years on plunging Oil - Led by drops in Resource and Financial Shares

Early selling dropped bonds around the world to their lowest levels in eight months. The selling was paced by weakness in Germany, which caused the 10-year yield to hit a high of 0.995% before easing (bond yields go up when bond prices go down). Currently, the German 10-year yield is up 4.8 basis points at 0.93%. Selling in other parts of the world has run yields up a handful of basis points with the US and UK 10-year yields at 2.39% and 2.12%, respectively.The Bank of England kept policy on hold. The central bank held its benchmark interest rate at a record low 0.50% while keeping its asset purchase program at 375 billion pounds. Both were expected. The British pound is higher by 0.6% at 1.5428.Greece's debt negotiations are at a stalemate. The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/afp-clock-ticking-on-greece-to-repay-imf-2015-6">first of four debt payments due in a two-week period is scheduled to be made on Friday</a>. That is when the government is supposed to pay 1.6 billion euros ($1.8 billion) to the International Monetary Fund. However, the IMF has previously stated all four of the debt payments could be made on June 19, buying the troubled country some precious time. Greece's 2-year yield is up 17 basis points at 22.14%.Australia's trade deficit ballooned. April trade data showed a deficit of 3.89 billion Australian dollars ($3.02 billion), the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/australia-just-posted-a-horrible-trade-deficit-the-worst-since-the-gfc-2015-6">highest since February 2008</a>. The disappointing reading comes as exports slumped 6% and imports climbed 4%. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics the weak data was "driven by coal, coke and briquettes, down $859m (22%) as a result of the temporary closure of ports due to severe weather conditions." The Australian dollar is lower by 0.5% at .7751.The ex-head of research for OPEC says oil prices will fall into year end. Hasan Qabazard, who was research head from 2006 to 2013, thinks brent crude oil prices will fall to between $40 and $50 per barrel by year end. Such a move would make for <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-06-03/oil-seen-by-opec-s-former-research-head-falling-on-slower-demand">a drop of as much as 37%</a> from Wednesday's closing price of $63.80 per barrel. A Bloomberg survey in May showed analysts are expecting "OPEC will keep its production target unchanged when the ministers gather" at Friday's meeting.Dish Network and T-Mobile US are talking merger. Discussions of a marriage between the two companies are still in the early stages. <a href="http://www.wsj.com/articles/dish-network-in-merger-talks-with-t-mobile-us-1433383285">The Wall Street Journal reports</a>, "The two sides are in close agreement about what the combined company would look like, with Dish Chief Executive Charlie Ergen becoming the company's chairman and his T-Mobile counterpart, John Legere, serving as the combined company's CEO." However, the price and make up of a deal remains unresolved.Prudential is considering fighting its SIFI tag. The insurance giant is closely monitoring Met Life's lawsuit against the US that would prevent it from being named a <a href="http://www.wsj.com/articles/prudential-ties-escape-from-risk-tag-to-outcome-of-metlife-suit-1433375054">"systemically important" financial institution</a>. Prudential considered a lawsuit back in 2013 when it was slapped with the SIFI tag, but ultimately the board of directors decided against it, according to a person familiar with the situation. "The systemically important designation originated with the 2010 Dodd-Frank financial-overhaul legislation that put new clamps on big firms in the wake of the 2008 crisis."Joy Global beat on the top and bottom lines. The mining equipment manufacturer announced <a href="http://www.cnbc.com/id/102732482">adjusted earnings of $0.59 per share</a>, topping the $0.55 that was expected. Revenue slumped 12.8% to $810.5 million, but that outpaced the $803.05 million that analysts were anticipating. The company guided full-year EPS of $2.50 to $3.00 and revenue of $3.3 billion to $3.6 billion.An activist investor wants Samsung to raise its offer for Samsung C&amp;T. Elliott Associates LP announced a 7.12% stake in Samsung C&amp;T, and says the offer by Cheil Industries, Samsung Group's owning family, <a href="http://www.wsj.com/articles/elliott-associates-buys-samsung-c-t-stake-1433378442">"significantly undervalues" the company</a>. The Wall Street Journal reports, "Shareholders of both companies are slated to vote on the deal July 17, and a two-thirds majority is required for passage, with at least one-third of shareholders showing up to vote."Stock markets around the world are mostly lower. France's CAC (-1.9%) leads the way lower in Europe after Australia's ASX (-1.4%) lagged in overnight trade. China's Shanghai Composite (+0.8%) was a notable outperformer. S&amp;P 500 futures are down 13.50 points at 2102.50.US economic data is heavy. Data begins to flow with the 7:30 a.m. ET with the release of Challenger Job Cuts, and continues with initial and continuing claims, productivity and unit labor costs at 8:30 a.m. ET. The company announced it will sell nearly all its real estate portfolio worth $26.5 billion to investors including Blackstone and Wells Fargo. It will also repatriate about $36 billion in foreign cash, and has authorized a share repurchase program of up to $50 billion. Shares rallied by over 10% in trading.</li><li>"This is a major step in our strategy to focus GE around its competitive advantages," Jeff Immelt, GE's chairman and CEO, said in a statement. Barclays analysts said the sale of GE Capital assets is "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/barclays-on-general-electric-asset-sales-2015-4">good riddance</a>," and investors now have a clearer sense of the GE's business mix. Blackstone will buy all of Excel Trust's outstanding shares for $15.85 per share, representing a 15% premium over Thursday's closing price. Shares rallied by over 14% Friday.</li><li><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/baker-hughes-rig-count-april-10-2015-4">US oil rig counts fell to the lowest level since December 2010 this week</a>. The latest data from Baker Hughes showed the number of active rigs fell by 42 to 760. Combined oil and gas rigs were down 40 to 988 as 2 natural gas rigs came on-line this week. This is the lowest combined total for oil and gas rigs since August 21, 2009.</li><li>In other data, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/import-prices-april-10-2015-4">import prices fell 0.3% in March</a>, better than the expectation for a 0.4% decline.
