Day One in <keyword id="106" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paris">Paris</keyword> was eventful, and not just for this one obvious reason. I landed in <keyword id="6354785" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="France">France</keyword> amongst grey skies and it started raining immediately as I scurried out of the airport. The Charles de Gaulle airport is far from the city centre where our <keyword id="719382" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Airbnb">Airbnb</keyword> was booked. The airport is around 40 mins from <a href="https://www.airbnb.co.in/rooms/5307851" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">our Airbnb listing at Ile Saint Louis</a>. This area is quite posh and I could see why as we strolled near the church of <keyword id="264806" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Notre-Dame">Notre Dame</keyword> which is minutes from this listing. Another notable feature of this area is that is it right next to the river <keyword id="3394250" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Siene">Siene</keyword> and a world famous ice cream place called the <keyword id="4567812" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="bertillon">Bertillon</keyword>, so we were quite thrilled to arrive in France.

The Reveal Our Airbnb host Nicholas was gracious to say the least and made sure our welcome was appropriate.The listing does mention that it is owned by someone influential but imagine our surprise to find out it is <keyword id="33341" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bryan-Adams">Bryan Adams</keyword> by inquiring about the Wifi name. Our host explained that this is Bryan's escapade which he uses once in a while to do photoshoots or just enjoy Paris. Business Insider has verified her Soho House membership .I've been a member of Soho House for a year and a half, and I don't know if I would've made any friends in my new city without it.I work in the creative industry, and modeling was the main reason I wanted to get a membership. I use the gym facilities on the daily basis, I like using the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wework-ceo-adam-neumann-bio-life-career-2019-8">co-working spaces</a>, and under-27 members get discounts at the restaurant at different times throughout the week.You get access to so many free events. I've seen one of my favorite artists through its Secret Sounds concerts. Not all of the events are free, but it has a pretty good set up on the app where you can find out what's going on. There are events for networking, wellness, and some are put on by other members. You can find everything on the app.It's quite a cool community. I've noticed there's been an influx of younger creatives. I think that changes the atmosphere and the vibe, especially since there usually is a lot of the older group. But, it's not really a negative thing since events tend to filter people based on interests.A lot of people assume that Soho House — and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nyc-social-club-cook-food-bring-liquor-photos-2023-7">members' clubs</a> in general — only have snobby people, but you can meet snobby people anywhere. I've personally never had an issue with another member. You have to push past that idea and find your tribe.I definitely think it's worth it. Even if I was over 27, I would pay the full price for membership because I've met some of my best friends in the city through SoHo House.Soho House told BI in an official statement that it introduced its under 27 membership in 2007, and "has welcomed multiple generations of emerging creatives, with the intention of providing them a platform to flourish and succeed, both personally and professionally, by connecting with members from all over the world."

But the World Health Organization isn't so sure."There is currently no evidence that wearing a mask (whether medical or other types) by healthy persons in the wider community setting, including universal community masking, can prevent them from infection with respiratory viruses, including COVID-19," the global public health arm of the United Nations said in <a href="https://worldhealthorganization.cmail19.com/t/d-l-mvduuy-jydhihhdjk-r/">new guidance</a> released this week. The disagreement hinges, in part, on a question scientists don't yet have clear answers for: How far can coronavirus droplets travel from an infected person, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-coronavirus-travel-through-air-droplets-aerosols-2020-3">how long can they stay aloft in the air</a>? The World Health Organization contends that the coronavirus spreads by large droplets that get expelled into the air when sick people spit, <a href="https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.04.02.20051177v1">talk</a>, cough, breathe, <a href="https://www.latimes.com/world-nation/story/2020-03-29/coronavirus-choir-outbreak">sing</a>, or sneeze. "So that does not indicate airborne transmission."This is one of the key reasons the WHO says you're probably only going to catch the virus by coming in contact with a sick person, or by touching a contaminated surface and then putting your hands to your eyes, nose, or mouth. "There is limited evidence that wearing a medical mask by healthy individuals in the households or among contacts of a sick patient, or among attendees of mass gatherings may be beneficial as a preventive measure," the latest WHO guidance on masks reads. Don Milton, a virologist at the <a href="https://sph.umd.edu/department/miaeh/faculty/people/donald-milton">University of Maryland</a> who studies how people catch and transmit viruses, believes the WHO's guidance on airborne transmission doesn't follow the rules of "good science.""It's ridiculous. They don't know. They don't know!" he said of the droplet-versus-aerosol debate. "It's very hard to separate those modes out. You know, people have been trying for flu for years, and<a href="https://catch.umd.edu/"> we still haven't been able to prove</a> one way or the other what route flu is transmitted. So how, after three months, do we know this for COVID-19?"<h2>It's possible that the virus might linger in the air</h2>Associated PressA commuter covers her face in London, Monday, March 16, 2020.Like Milton, the CDC is more cautious about how the virus spreads, suggesting aerosolization might occur, especially in healthcare settings. "The contribution of small respirable particles, sometimes called aerosols or droplet nuclei, to close proximity transmission is currently uncertain," the CDC says in its<a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/infection-control/control-recommendations.html"> COVID-19 guidance to healthcare workers</a> for infection control. "Airborne transmission from person-to-person over long distances is unlikely."This is why the CDC cautions that "procedures that are likely to induce coughing" like suctioning of patient airways "should be performed cautiously, and avoided if possible," at the hospital right now, because there's the potential for coronavirus transmission in the air in such spaces."There's no exact cutoff between a large droplet and an aerosol, it's a continuum; as they get smaller, they stay in the air longer, and they have the potential to travel farther," Milton said. "We like to have things in neat little categories, but life doesn't really work like that. Those are just artificial boundaries we impose to try to understand what's going on and it doesn't, in this case, help a whole lot."<h2>Masks can work when used by sick people and healthcare workers </h2>Crystal Cox/Business InsiderThere are, however, two key points of agreement among public health experts about masks.First, masks do help if you put them on sick people. The problem with COVID-19, though, is that patients may not know they are sick, either because they're pre-symptomatic and are still feeling well, or because they're asymptomatic and may never feel ill. These people can still infect others, though, if they share the virus through droplets."There's a very common view that we're wearing masks not only to protect ourselves, but because if we have been infected, we're then protecting other people by wearing the mask," Ben Cowling, a professor of epidemiology and a mask researcher at the University of Hong Kong's School of Public Health, recently told<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-face-masks-how-effective-are-they-evidence-so-far-2020-3"> Business Insider</a>.One<a href="https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/69/wr/mm6914e1.htm"> recent study</a> in Singapore, where coronavirus patients and their contacts were tightly tracked, found that more than 6% of coronavirus cases acquired there likely came from people who were sick - but before they ever displayed symptoms.In Iceland, where 5% of the population has been tested for the coronavirus, roughly half of those who tested positive were completely asymptomatic, as<a href="https://www.cnn.com/2020/04/01/europe/iceland-testing-coronavirus-intl/index.html"> CNN recently reported</a>. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the US's leading public health voice in this outbreak, says "right now we're just guessing" about how many asymptomatic coronavirus carriers might be in the general population, but he<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkVdR4ysfrg"> suggested</a> recently that "somewhere between 25 and 50%" of COVID-19 cases may be unknowingly carrying and potentially transmitting the virus to others.The second place masks are imperative is in hospitals, since they have lots of sick patients. Here, face masks, along with eye shields, gowns, and gloves, are important pieces of protective equipment for doctors and healthcare workers who labor in environments where coronavirus particles surround them all day long.<h2>Healthcare workers shouldn't wear homemade masks</h2>There's good<a href="https://bmjopen.bmj.com/content/5/4/e006577.responses#covid-19-shortages-of-masks-and-the-use-of-cloth-masks-as-a-last-resort"> evidence that homemade masks</a> should be an absolute "last resort" in these settings, as they don't provide nearly as much protection as surgical masks, which are made from fabrics designed to trap viruses.Associated PressIn this photo taken on Thursday, March 19, 2020, Sien Lagae, works on a mouth mask, meant to help protect from the spread of COVID-19, on her sewing machine at home in Torhout, Belgium.The WHO recommends N95 masks for healthcare workers who need to intubate, ventilate, or resuscitate patients - or do any other "aerosol-generating procedures." Other researchers suggest that if healthcare professionals must use reusable, homemade masks (because manufactured masks aren't available) that they wash and thoroughly dry them often, and put them on and take them off carefully, without touching the outside of the mask. It may be years or even decades before we understand more fully how this new virus operates, and how much wearing masks in public can really help stop the spread. It took <a href="https://www.atsjournals.org/doi/10.1164/ajrccm.163.1.hh11-00">seven years at one Baltimore VA hospital</a> before researchers finally showed conclusively that tuberculosis could - occasionally - be transmitted through the air, without any face-to-face contact (in a study performed between people and guinea pigs).This is why Milton argues there's a lot we have to learn about this virus, and how it's really transmitted. "The problem is that with clinical epidemiology, you know that people have been in close contact, and that's when transmissions happened, but you don't know what happened when they're in close contact," he said. "You don't know whether they actually touched, you don't know whether it was large droplets, or whether they were just close enough that they breathed a lot of the other person's exhaled breaths. Experts can't agree on how long the coronavirus lingers in the air, and the controversy has huge implications for mask-wearing

That area falls under the responsibility of Fleet Forces Command but will soon become the remit of the US Second Fleet, which was reestablished earlier this year <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/us-navy-reactivating-2nd-fleet-for-atlantic-amid-tensions-with-russia-2018-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">amid growing concern about Russian naval activity</a> in and around the Atlantic Ocean.The cruiser Normandy and destroyers Forrest Sherman and Arleigh Burke are set to return to Norfolk, Va. this week, while the destroyers Bulkeley and Farragut remain at sea, a Navy official told the Virginian-Pilot newspaper. An official with Fleet Forces Command did not return a request seeking details about what operations these ships have been performing. But it's clear that anti-submarine operations have <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nato-ships-russian-sub-in-mediterranean-hint-at-changing-naval-warfare-2017-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">become a bigger priority</a> for the US and its allies. The Truman's anti-submarine capabilities <a href="https://news.usni.org/2018/07/16/uss-harry-s-truman-now-operating-cold-war-era-submarine-hot-spot" target="_blank" rel="noopener">are limited</a> to the helicopters it carries, but the strike group did deploy earlier this year with more destroyers than usual. Those ships are outfitted with sophisticated anti-submarine-warfare assets that aren't typically used in the Atlantic, Bryan Clark, a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments and a former submariner, <a href="https://news.usni.org/2018/06/29/carrier-uss-harry-s-truman-operating-in-the-atlantic-as-russian-submarine-activity-is-on-the-rise" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told USNI News in June</a>. Alliance officials <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/russia-submarine-warfare-increasing-focus-2018-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">have said</a> Russian submarine activity in the area is at <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/russian-submarine-activity-increasing-around-uk-and-in-north-atlantic-2018-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">levels not seen</a> since the Cold War (though intelligence reports from the era <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/russian-submarine-activity-increasing-around-uk-and-in-north-atlantic-2018-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">suggest</a> that activity is far from Cold War peaks).Russia's submarine fleet is is not nearly as big as its Cold War predecessor, but the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/russia-submarine-warfare-increasing-focus-2018-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">subs Moscow has added and is working on are more advanced</a>. The US Navy has spent several million dollars refurbishing Naval Air Station Keflavik in Iceland to handle the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/us-navy-p8a-poseidon-sub-hunting-aircraft-features-sales-2018-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">advanced P-8A Poseidon patrol aircraft</a>, though the Navy <a href="https://www.navytimes.com/news/2018/01/10/restoration-of-us-air-base-in-iceland-does-not-mean-troops-will-follow-navy-says/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">has said</a> those upgrades don't necessarily mean a permanent presence will be reestablished there.Nevertheless, focusing on the GIUK Gap may fall short of the challenge NATO now faces.For much of the Cold War, the Soviet navy lacked land-attack cruise missiles and would have had to leave its "bastion" in the Barents Sea in order to engage NATO forces, which made the GIUK Gap an important choke point at that time, according to Steven Wills, a military historian and former US Navy surface-warfare officer.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Google Maps The GIUK Gap has long been seen as a key choke point in the North Atlantic. </div></div></div>But with the development of sub-launched missiles - especially the modern Kaliber cruise missile - "Today's Russian Navy can remain within its Barents bastion and still launch accurate attacks against ships in the Norwegian Sea and NATO land targets without leaving these protected waters," <a href="http://cimsec.org/a-new-gap-in-the-high-north-and-forward-defense-against-russian-naval-power/37129" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Wills argues in an article</a> for the Center for International Maritime Security, a professional military journal focused on naval strategy.NATO should adopt a deterrent posture like that of the Cold War, Wills says, "but the locus of the action is much further north than Iceland."NATO's decision to reestablish <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/trump-reportedly-is-joking-about-pulling-the-us-out-of-nato-2018-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">an Atlantic Command</a>, to be based in Norfolk, is a welcome one, Wills writes, but that headquarters should focus on air and port facilities around the Norwegian and Greenland seas, even forward-deploying to oversee activity there. Surface vessels may need to partner with unmanned assets to cover a greater area as sea ice recedes.Russia's Northern Fleet is based on the Kola Peninsula on the Barents Sea, and a more active NATO naval presence in the area would almost certainly draw protests from Moscow, which has accused the alliance of trying to box in it and its allies in Europe. But a presence in the northern seas is necessary, according to Wills."The real 'Gap' where NATO must focus its deterrent action is the Greenland, Svalbard, North Cape line at the northern limit of the Norwegian and and Greenland Seas," he writes.
