In just 20 days, the city has recorded an alarming 1,000 cases, highlighting a drastic surge compared to previous years. Alongside dengue, there has been a notable uptick in viral fever cases, further straining local healthcare resources. Experts point to the unusual weather conditions as a key culprit. The lack of rain and unexpected cold winds have created a breeding ground for mosquitoes, the carriers of dengue. Additionally, BBMP's increased vigilance with fever surveys has led to more detections, contributing to the higher case numbers. Chief Health Officer Dr. Syed Madani emphasised the proactive stance of the health department, noting a quadrupling in checks compared to previous years. In the first half of 2024 alone, Bengaluru has already reported nearly 5,000 dengue cases, significantly surpassing last year’s figures for the same period. Most of the surge came after May this year. The eastern and Mahadevpura zones of Bengaluru have been hit the hardest by dengue, with construction work creating stagnant water – a perfect haven for mosquitoes. The southern zone, meanwhile, is grappling with chikungunya, another mosquito-borne illness. The health department is pulling out all the stops to combat the outbreak. Fogging drives are underway to kill mosquito larvae, and public awareness campaigns are educating residents on preventing water stagnation around their homes. Continuous fever surveys are also being conducted to identify potential cases early on. The severity of the outbreak hit close to home when Chief Civic Commissioner Tushar Giri Nath tested positive for dengue. Despite the setback, Nath is expected to resume his duties shortly, underscoring the personal toll of the city's health crisis. equipments, demands probe Bengaluru, July 3 () Leader of Opposition Siddaramaiah on Friday alleged misappropriation on part of the Karnataka government in purchase of equipment for COVID-19 treatment and demanded an inquiry into it, a charge denied by the Medical Education minister. Accusing the government of "irresponsibility" in handling the coronavirus crisis, he demanded transparency. "The government has purchased corona related equipment (medical), worth more than Rs 3,000 crore. Prima facie it looks the government has paid more price than the market price," Siddaramaiah said. Speaking to reporters here he said, according information available with him the government has paid two-three times more than market price during the purchase. He felt strongly that there was 'misappropriation.' "I demand the government to come out with a white paper regarding the purchase and price paid. I also demand for an inquiry into the purchase. I don't know who is involved, but there is a clear case of misappropriation and corruption. It appears prima facie," he added. Reacting to the allegation, Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar said all purchases have been made in the most transparent way by senior officials under the supervision of the Chief Secretary. "It is wrong on part of a former Chief Minister to allege corruption. I'm pained, it is unfortunate. If he had doubts he could have asked the Chief Secretary or us Ministers, we would have clarified. This will not send the right message." The government has nothing to hide as it is transparent, and was ready for any inquiry, the Minister added. Alleging negligence, lack of commitment and responsibility on part of the government by calling it "irresponsible" in handling COVID-19 crisis, Siddaramaiah said Chief Minister Yediyurappa is not in a position to do anything. "I'm not sure whether the Ministers listen to him," he said. Claiming that there was a squabble for supremacy among the Ministers including Health Minister Sriramulu, Medical Education Minister Sudhakar and Revenue Minister R Ashoka, he said, "Barring one or two Ministers there is no coordination in the government." Hitting out at the government over the incident in Ballari, where COVID-19 bodies were thrown into a single pit, Siddaramaiah said Health Minister Sriramulu should own up responsibility. "Certain acts on part of the government are inhuman and disrespectful to humanity.... this was done by the officials, where is the government?," he asked highlighting the incident. Sriramulu too hails from Ballari district and the incident shows the respect the state government has towards the dead, he said. "Shouldn't Sriramulu own up responsibility? Is suspending six people and saying such things will not happen in the future a solution? What were you doin all these days?" he asked. Noting that there are reports and complaints regarding lack of beds, food and quality of treatment, Siddaramaiah sought to know how despite experts warning earlier iself the cases will increase. "Is there a government in the state? Inspite of me writing letters seeking information, officials are not sharing. It amounts to breach of privilege," he said. Claiming that Rs 290 crore has come to Chief Minister's fund, Siddaramiah said let Yediyurappa come out with a statement and let him tell how much money has come from the PM cares fund to the state. Government of India and the government of Karnataka should come out with a white paper regarding the availability of beds, ventilators, ambulances, patients admitted, patients in ICU, he added. Responding to Siddaramaiah's charge that the government was not sharing information, Minister Sudhakar said the administration was facing challenges every day, despite being in a troubled situation we are all working together to fight the virus, so there might have been some delay in sharing information. "will we run away somewhere? We will share an account of every rupee spent... if someone has made money illegally in this Covid-19 situation they are unfit to be in a democracy," he added. Siddaramaiah alleges misappropriation in purchase of COVID-19

Bengaluru, Sep 13 (IANS) Karanataka's Leader of Opposition Siddaramaiah on Sunday asserted that linking politicians to a case based on a photo with the accused was an unhealthy trend. Speaking to reporters after releasing a booklet 'Farmers Security, Country's Security' authored by Justice Nagmohan Das, he added that there was no way to know the history of everyone participating in random ceremonies. "Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa has to realise that he cannot cover up his government's failures behind this (drug mafia). He will have to answer for the failures as the opposition party will surely make him answer during the forthcoming Legislature session that will commence from September 21," the former Karnataka Chief Minister said. He assured that the opposition party would fully cooperate to make the state free of drugs. "Drugs are a big menace, we all know it. It needs to be dealt with an iron hand. That being said, the opposition cannot allow the ruling party to hide behind this," he added. Responding to a question, Siddaramaiah contended that the Congress party will not protect anyone who has violated the law or indulged in anti-national activities. Bengaluru, Jul 6 () Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Monday termed Leader of Opposition Siddaramaiah's allegations of misappropriation against his government in the purchase of COVID-19 equipment as "unnecessary" and asked him to examine all the documents personally. He said if there were any shortcomings, strict action will be taken against officials or whoever is involved. "Let Siddaramaiah come and have a look at the figures, our officials will give him all the documents. As the leader of the opposition, let him personally examine everything," Yediyurappa said. Speaking to reporters after paying tributes to former Deputy Prime Minister Babu Jagjivan Ram on his death anniversary, he said, "we will rectify if there are any shortcomings and strict action will be taken against officials or whoever it is." "But, without having any documents unnecessarily Siddaramaiah has been making such allegations, I had not reacted so far. Since you asked I'm telling him, as the Leader of Opposition come and sit in Vidhana Soudha (state secretariat), examine all the documents and give appropriate suggestions," the chief minister added. "We have to live with this pandemic, so if the citizens of Bengaluru maintain social distance and cooperate with the government we can control the spread, there is no other way. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also said the same thing," he added. Appealing to the people to cooperate with the government by maintaining caution in the backdrop of a spike in the number of cases in the city, the Chief Minister said, "your life is important, we are taking all measures like arranging for beds at the hospitals among others. We will see to it that there is no shortage of anything." As of July 5 evening, cumulatively 23,474 COVID-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state, which includes 372 deaths and 9,847 discharges. Of this 9,580 cases are from Bengaluru Urban. Purchase of COVID-19 equipment: K'taka CM terms Siddaramaiah's allegations of misappropriation "unnecessary"

There was a time when Bengaluru became the start-up city as well as the hub of several multinational companies, because of the suitable conditions that this coming-of-age city offered. However, worsening traffic conditions in the city and government’s lethargic attitude towards taking any steps to improve these conditions have forced Bengaluru’s outer ring road (ORR)-based MNCs to look outside the city for their next round of expansions. 
 
Apparently, traffic has resulted in these companies facing productivity loss, estimated at hundreds of crores. Factors that are forcing companies to think of downsizing in Bengaluru also include road-safety issues, mental and physical stress and resulting health issues in their employees. 
 Three months ago, a group of heads of companies based along ORR met <keyword id="6354466" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Siddaramaiah">Siddaramaiah</keyword>, the CM of Karnataka, to find a solution to the increasing traffic; however, two meetings and three follow-up letters have not resulted in anything substantial. 
 
If these companies shift base outside Bengaluru, the city stands at a risk of losing thousands of crores in investment, not to forget the dent to its reputation as a tech and startup hub. 
 
Cities that emerge as an option for these companies include Pune, Hyderabad and Chennai, where traffic problem exists but much lesser as compared to Bengaluru.

The Seventh Pay Commission, chaired by former chief secretary K Sudhakar Rao, has recommended this hefty pay rise, which will cost the state exchequer an additional Rs 17,440.15 crore annually. This move comes on the heels of the interim 17% salary hike given by the former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai in March 2023, to which the current administration is adding another 10.5%, making the total hike 27.5%. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="111663090" title="The latest trick companies could be using to pay workers less" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div>The decision for this remarkable pay raise wasn't just an act of benevolence, however. New Delhi, Poll strategist <keyword id="4300245" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sunil-kanugolu" source="Orion">Sunil Kanugolu</keyword> has yet again proven to be the man with the Midas touch, plotting the Congress' amazing turnaround in Telangana months after being the architect of the grand old party's return to power in Karnataka. Starting with Prashant Kishor's I-PAC, Kanugolu was largely credited for shaping the Congress' win in Karnataka and was later accorded Cabinet rank in the Siddaramaiah government. This time, Kanugolu along with PCC chief A Revanth Reddy formed a formidable pair to chalk out the Congress' strategy to pull down the K Chandrashekhar Rao-led BRS government that was eying a third term in the southern state. The Congress was headed for victory in Telangana while it was staring at crushing defeats in the Hindi heartland states of <keyword id="6355554" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="madhya-pradesh" source="Orion">Madhya Pradesh</keyword>, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan. Kanugolu had also made forays in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh following a directive from the party's central leadership but regional satraps Ashok Gehlot and Kamal Nath reportedly were not on the same page as the poll strategist. Ahead of the Rajasthan elections, Kanugolu had made an assessment about the winnability of probable candidates but Gehlot reportedly did not agree to his suggestions and brought in Naresh Arora's Designboxed to construct the Congress government's narrative in the run-up to the assembly polls. Sources say that the success of Kanugolu in Karnataka and Telangana was the result of the free hand given to him and allowing his team to work freely. Kanugolu, who hails from Karnataka and is in his early 40s, has been considered largely as the brain behind the Congress' narrative in Karnataka with the 'PayCM' campaign against the BJP. In the run-up to the polls in Telangana, he highlighted the alleged corruption of the K Chandrashekhar Rao dispensation as part of Congress' campaign that seemed to have struck a chord with the people. The campaigns run by the Congress in Karnataka and Telangana have been very similar as both highlighted the alleged graft of the ruling dispensation and projected welfare guarantees that seemed to have struck an instant connection with the public. Interestingly, Kanugolu has also been involved in several BJP poll campaigns in the past. In 2018, he worked with the BJP in Karnataka and the party managed to become the single largest party with 104 seats. He had also worked on Narendra Modi's campaign in 2014, as well as the party's political campaigns in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat. Kanugolu, a former consultant with McKinsey, was also associated with DMK chief MK Stalin and oversaw the party's '<keyword id="3576832" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="namakku-naame" source="Orion">Namakku Naame</keyword>' (we are for ourselves) campaign during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. In 2021, he also worked with AIADMK against the DMK and led the party to win 75 seats in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections. Kanugolu had joined the Congress last year and worked closely with the Karnataka campaign. He is also credited with strategising <keyword id="5268" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rahul-gandhi" source="Orion">Rahul Gandhi</keyword>'s cross-country 'Bharat Jodo Yatra' from Kanyakumari to Kashmir last year. Having delivered Karnataka and Telangana to the Congress, Kanugolu is likely to be given more responsibilities by the party in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls.

Bengaluru, Sep 23 (PTI) The Karnataka Assembly on Thursday passed the Karnataka Appropriation Bill, 2021 pertaining to an estimated supplementary budget of Rs 10,265.33 crore. The supplementary budget is towards defraying several charges that will come in the course of payment during the financial year 2021-22. The bill authorises payment and appropriation of certain further sums from the consolidated fund of Karnataka for services of the current fiscal. Participating in the discussion, Leader of Opposition Siddaramaiah said the supplementary budget has been introduced at a time when the state's revenues are affected due to various reasons. He said the GST compensation is not coming properly. Further, the finance minister has announced that the GST compensation may be stopped from 2022. Siddaramaiah also underlined the need to stop wasteful expenditure. Agreeing with him, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said he has asked his officers to curtail expenditures by five per cent. Bengaluru, Oct 23 (IANS) Taking serious exception to the BJP's poll promise in Bihar of providing free Covid vaccine if the party is voted to power, the Congress in Karnataka termed the saffron party as "Opportunist BJP" while the Karnataka BJP countered it by asking the Congress to "remove hate Modi glasses" and know the difference between governance and poll promise. Launching a scathing attack through his Twitter handle, Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah said, "Would the state BJP dare to ask the Union government to provide free Covid vaccines for Kanndiagas too?" He also said that Karnataka Chief Minister Yediyurappa won't make such a promise to Kannadigas. Pointing at Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who is a Rajya Sabha member from Karnataka, Siddaramaiah said, "Sitharaman has made it clear that distribution of Covid vaccine entirely depends on the outcome of the Bihar elections. Should the pandemic not be a concern for the Union government? What does PM Narendra Modi have to say about this? Is it vote over health and life for BJP?" Training his guns on the BJP MPs and other leaders from the saffron party, Siddaramaiah said the state has elected 25 BJP MPs and these MPs have no gumption to even make a formal demand to supply free vaccines to Karnataka. Taking pot-shots at the BJP, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President, D.K. Shivakumar demanded that the ruling BJP at the Centre must come out in the open on whether the Union government has started the procurement of vaccines for this disease. "If they have, they could have at least used them to save their own leaders like Union Minister of State for Railways, Suresh Angadi. Union ministers of Sitharaman's stature should not have been part of such politicking," he said while campaigning for the party candidate in R.R. Nagara, which is going to the polls on November 3. Rebutting these allegations, Karnataka BJP too tweeted, saying: "Dear @siddaramaiah If you remove your 'Hate Modi Glasses' and look around, you will see that PM @narendramodi treats all Bharatiyas as equal.
