Three days after the country rejoiced on hearing that one of the ten soldiers who were buried under snow after an avalanche hit their <keyword id="42770" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Siachen">Siachen</keyword> post has been rescued alive, the moment of grief has left everyone in shock. 
 
Lance Naik ​Hanumanthappa Koppad breathed his last in the Army Hospital, Delhi, as all attempts to revive the Siachen braveheart from coma failed. The soldier suffered acute oxygen deprivation to the brain and pneumonia in both lungs. 
 
Talking of the rescue operation that brought this momentary joy, it could only be termed a miracle that rescue teams were able to establish a radio contact with one of the ten soldiers of Indian Army, who were trapped after a massive ice-wall avalanche hit their 19,600 feet high Army post in Siachen Glacier on February 3. 
 
This radio signal prompted the rescue teams to start their rescue operation along with sniffer dogs, earth-penetrating radars, radio signal detectors, and specialised ice-cutting and boring equipments, with double efforts. 
 
"After radio contact was established on February 4, rescue operations were stalled on February 5 due to snow storms and blizzards. Soldiers deployed at such posts keep their radio sets switched on to ensure they can be traced by signals in case of a mishap," an officer told TOI. 
 
The teams were only waiting for the weather to be slightly clear. As soon as that happened, over 150 rescue personnel resumed their efforts so that they could locate the "general area" where they expected the soldiers to have got buried. 
 
Nine bodies were extricated around 7.30pm on Monday, and Lance Naik Hanumanthappa Koppad was taken out alive from under 35 feet of snow, his condition being very critical. 
 
Names of the martyrs who did the supreme sacrifice for the nation are Subedar Nagesha, Havildar Elumalai, Lance Havildar S Kumar, Lance Naik Sudheesh, Lance Naik Hanamanthappa Koppad , sepoys Mahesha PN, Ganesan G, Rama Moorthy N, Mustaq Ahmed and nursing assistant Suryawanshi SV, all belonging to the 19th Battalion of Madras Regiment.

Siachen braveheart breathes his last in Delhi; here is how he was rescued from under 35 feet of snow

Asserting that it is fully prepared to fight a full-fledged war even in winters in eastern Ladakh, the <keyword id="6354416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword> on Wednesday said if China created conditions for war, they will face a better trained, better prepared, fully rested and psychologically hardened Indian troops. In a statement, it said compared to physically and psychologically battle-hardened Indian troops, Chinese troops mostly are from urban areas and not used to hardships or prolonged deployment under field conditions. The Army' Northern Command headquarters made these assertions reacting to China's official media Global Times reports that India's operational logistics is not geared up adequately and it will not be able to fight through winters effectively. "This can best be attributed to ignorance. Indian Army is fully prepared and more than capable of fighting a full-fledged war even in winters in eastern Ladakh," a Northern Command spokesperson said here. "India is a peace-loving country and wishes to have good relations with its neighbours. India always prefers to resolve issues through dialogue. While talks are in progress to resolve the border issues with China in eastern Ladakh, at the military level it is well prepared for the prolonged stand-off," he said. He said altitudes in Ladakh range from "high to super-high altitude" and there is a lot of snowfall - up to 40 feet after November. "Coupled with this, the temperature dipping down to minus 30 to 40 degree Celsius is a usual phenomenon. Wind chill factor makes matters even worse for the troops. The roads also get closed due to the snow. But despite all this, the most encouraging part for India is that the Indian soldiers have a huge experience of winter warfare and are psychologically tuned to operate at short notice," the spokesperson said. While these facts are known to the world, he said, adding the operational logistics capabilities, however, are hardly known. "Logistic capability relates to mobility, habitat and billeting, quality services for health, special rations, repair and recovery, heating systems, high-quality weapons, ammunition, quality clothing, and so on. While much of these capabilities existed earlier and troops could simply plug and play, a lot has also been boosted since May this year when China showed first signs of aggression," he said. The spokesperson said it is important to understand that the Army has the experience of Siachen, the highest battleground in the world, where conditions are much more demanding than the frontiers with China. "Traditionally there were two routes for moving into Ladakh, that is through Zojila (Srinagar-Leh Highway) and Rohtang Passes (Manali-Leh). Recently India commissioned a third road from Darcha to Leh which is much shorter distance-wise and less prone to closure," he said. The spokesperson said completion of Atal tunnel on the Rohtang route has force multiplied the logistic capacities. "In addition, we have a large number of airbases with the help of which we can maintain the Army well. Modern snow clearing equipment has also been placed on these routes to keep them open beyond November, thus giving us more time for daily maintenance of the troops," he said. The spokesperson said special fuel and lubricants for tanks and armoured personnel carriers have also been stocked adequately, including spares for their maintenance. "Water points and tube wells have been established for the troops and animals like mules and yaks. The living barracks have also been prepared which are comfortable and warm," he said. He said facilities such as the central heating system are some of the high points of these facilities. "Ammunition of various types including small arms, missiles and tank and artillery ammunition have also been adequately stocked. The medical system is also in place for any eventuality." The spokesperson said "China's concept has always been to win the wars without fighting, hence if they create conditions for war, they will come across better trained, better prepared, fully rested and psychologically hardened Indian troops. "These worries have been percolating in the minds of Chinese troops and are visible in Chinese media," he said. Indian Army asserts it's ready to fight full-fledged war in eastern Ladakh — even in the middle of winter

The standoff between Indian and Chinese soldiers in <keyword id="8093222" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="eastern-Ladakh-region">eastern Ladakh region</keyword> in the last one-and-a-half months is likely to fester for longer than any other such faceoffs in recent years, and could surpass the 73-day conflict in <keyword id="4708082" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="doklam">Doklam</keyword> in 2017. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="76438507" title="The next few days are going to be stormy for India and China say a former diplomat and retired lieutenant general" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> The eastern Ladakh crisis is an unprecedented situation if compared to the Doklam standoff, which was resolved after little more than 70 days. The tense situation in Galwan Valley in all likelihood would be a prolonged feud since India has lost 20 of its soldiers. Also, what is disturbing is that 10 Indian soldiers, including officers, were in the captivity of Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) for three days after one of the bloodiest attacks was carried out by China on June 15 at the Line of Actual Control (LAC). There is a renewed fury in Indian security establishments after it came to light that a total 10 Indian Army men, including two officers of the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and Major, were in Chinese Army captivity for three days and were released only on Thursday evening. The barbaric assault on Indian Army soldiers at patrolling point 14 on June 15 has left little scope to ease the tension between the two countries in near future. China's deceptive method to change status quo China has changed the status quo at four places in eastern Ladakh to which India has objected. The four standoff points are Finger Four in north bank of Pangong Lake, patrolling point 14 near Galwan Valley, patrolling point 15 and patrolling point 17A, which is also known as Hot Springs. At these four points, troop concentration has increased manifold as China changed the status quo. The Chinese deceptive move underlining its expansionist design kick-started after India had begun building road infrastructure in its territory near the Line of Actual Control for easy movement of troops. The Galwan Valley attack on Indian soldiers on June 15 was not an isolated incident. The unprovoked offensive by the Chinese PLA started from May 5 and kept happening over few intervals, leading to the barbaric attack on the night of June 15 in which 76 soldiers were injured and 20 were killed. Those were the first casualties faced by the Indian Army in a clash with the Chinese PLA since 1975 when an Indian patrol was ambushed by Chinese troops in Arunachal Pradesh. Indian Army troops were outnumbered by 1:5 ratio when PLA troops attacked patrolling point number 14 at the Line of Actual Control. PLA troops "savagely attacked" Indian Army personnel, sources said on Wednesday. "The numbers of Indian Army troops compared to PLA troops were of 1:5 ratio," said sources, adding that China used thermal imaging drones to trace Indian army soldiers before brutally attacking them. "It was the deadliest attack carried on Indian Army personnel," government sources said. The Doklam crisis The Doklam crisis of 2017 was totally different from the current situation in eastern Ladakh region, as it was not taking place on a territory disputed between the two countries. China was carrying out infrastructural development work in Doklam, the tri-junction of three countries -- India, China and Bhutan -- to which India had objected. China then claimed that there was a boundary dispute between Bhutan and China in which India had no claims. However, India refuted and stood its ground, matching the deployment of Chinese troops for 73 days. The standoff was triggered by China, which said it was constructing a road within its territory. This was disputed by India, which said the Chinese road construction site was Bhutanese territory. In Doklam, India feared that the Chinese road would give its military access to heights from where it could threaten the Siliguri Corridor, India's tenuous link with its northeastern regions. The crisis was resolved with diplomatic maturity without losing any ground. There was no change in the status quo on the ground and the faceoff ended on August 28, 2017. The Eastern Ladakh Crisis The faceoff in eastern Ladakh, where China has intruded into Indian territory, has escalated into intense hostility and both the countries have increased troop deployments at four strategic locations. The Chinese are trying to usurp Indian land and even launched a massive propaganda campaign to claim that its troops were positioned within the Chinese border, which is a lie that has been exposed by international think-tanks keeping a close watch on India-China border developments. The Chinese military has positioned itself at strategic locations in such a way that it will give them the edge to challenge road construction by India. China does not want any threatening build-up of military infrastructure in the Sub Sector North, which lies just to the east of Siachen glacier and is the only area that provides direct access to Aksai Chin from India. In the meantime, India has maintained that it needs to build infrastructure in its own territory at the Line of Actual Control and cannot compromise on it. This has led to the current crisis. Escalated Hostility In his first remarks on the bloody border clash between Indian and Chinese troops in Galwan Valley, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had made it clear on Wednesday that India wants peace, but is capable of giving a befitting reply if provoked. The Prime Minister said, "I would like to assure the nation that the sacrifice of our jawans will not go in vain. For us, India's unity and sovereignty is most important and no one can stop us from protecting them. No one should have a doubt on this point. India wants peace, but is capable of giving a befitting reply in every way." This clear message comes against the backdrop of the Chinese army and its Foreign Ministry's blatant lie claiming control over the Galwan Valley. Although historical facts and documents have exposed Chinese sinister claims, the move itself highlights Chinese intent to change the status quo in the Ladakh region. The Indian security establishments have clearly said that India will not let the Chinese take even an inch of its territory. The Indian government and security officials believe that the situation will remain tense in the coming months even as both countries are trying to resolve the vexed issues through dialogue. India is also looking at a multi-pronged approach to deal with China by curtailing its business activities in the country. However, for a lot of us, the real timeline is either unknown or has become hazy over a period of time. So, here is a complete timeline of what has happened-bare facts of how the state of Jammu&amp;Kasmir has unraveled over the last seven decades. 
 
 
 
1947 – The British rule ended in India and the nation was divided into mainly Hindu India and Muslim-majority state of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Pakistan&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Pakistan</a>. 
 1947 – The Pakistan tribal army starts attacking the <keyword id="3744025" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="kashmir-region">Kashmir region</keyword> and the Maharaja of Kashmir signs a treaty of accession with India. War breaks out between India and Pakistan over the region.

Kashmir is for practical purposes partitioned. 
 1951 – Elections are held in the Indian-administered state of Jammu and Kashmir back accession to India. India feels that this makes a referendum <keyword id="6355835" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="UN">un</keyword>necessary. The UN and Pakistan say a referendum needs to take into account the views of voters throughout the former princely state. 
 
 
 1953 - Pro-Indian authorities arrest and dismiss Prime Minister <keyword id="293003" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sheikh-Abdullah">Sheikh Abdullah</keyword>, leader of the governing <keyword id="43898" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Conference">National Conference</keyword>, as he takes a pro-referendum stance and delays formal accession to India. A new Jammu and Kashmir government ratifies accession to India. 
 
1957 - The constitution of Indian-administrated Jammu and Kashmir defines it as part of India. 
 
 
 1950s - China gradually occupies eastern Kashmir (<keyword id="71796" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aksai-Chin">Aksai Chin</keyword>). 
 1962 – a war starts between India and China and China defeats India in a short war for control of <keyword id="3978218" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="aksai-china">Aksai China</keyword>. 
 
1963 - Pakistan cedes the Trans-Karakoram Tract of Kashmir to China. 
 
 
 
1965 - A small war between Indian and Pakistan over Kashmir starts and ends in a ceasefire and a return to the previous positions. 
 
1971-72 - Another Indo-Pakistan war ends in defeat for Pakistan and leads to the 1972 Simla Agreement.This turns the Kashmir ceasefire line into the Line of Control, pledges both sides to settle their differences through negotiations, and calls for a final settlement of the Kashmir dispute. The Agreement forms the basis of Pakistani-Indian relations thereafter. 
 
 
 
1974 - The Opposition Plebiscite Front in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir drops demand for a referendum in return for extensive autonomy in an agreement with the Indian government. Sheikh Abdullah becomes chief minister, and his political dynasty continues to dominate the National Conference and state after his death in 1982. 
 
 
 1984 - <keyword id="6354416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword> gains control over the Siachen Glacier, an area not demarcated by the Line of Control. Pakistan has been making frequent attempts to capture the area in the following decades. 
 1987 - Disputed state elections in Indian-administrated Jammu and Kashmir give a thrust to a pro-independence insurgency centred around the Jammu and <keyword id="307591" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kashmir-Liberation-Front">Kashmir Liberation Front</keyword> (<keyword id="94546" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="JKLF">JKLF</keyword>). India also accuses Pakistan of fomenting the insurgency by despatching fighters across the Line of Control, which Pakistan denies. 
 
 
 
1990 - The insurgency escalates after the Indian Army kills about 100 demonstrators at Gawakadal Bridge. Attacks and threats lead to the flight of almost all Hindus from the Kashmir Valley area of the state. India imposes Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in Jammu and Kashmir. 
 
1990s - The insurgency keeps on continuing, with Kashmiri militants training in Pakistan and India deploying hundreds of thousands of troops in Jammu and Kashmir. It’s the civilians that have been facing violence by both sides. 
 
1999 - India and Pakistan go to war again after militants cross from Pakistani-administered Kashmir into the Indian-administered Kargil district. India repulses the attack, accuses Pakistan of being behind it, and breaks off relations. 
 2001-2004 - Moves to boost relations between the two countries are punctuated by continuing violence, notably an attack on the parliament of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir in <keyword id="41568" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Srinagar">Srinagar</keyword> in 2001. 
 
2010 - Major protests erupt in the Kashmir Valley of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir over the summer after a demonstrator is killed by the Indian army. The protests abate in September after the government announce measures to ease tension. 
 2011 August - Chief Minister <keyword id="19464" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Omar-Abdullah">Omar Abdullah</keyword> announces an amnesty for the 1,200 young men who threw stones at security forces during the anti-government protests in the Kashmir Valley in 2010. Indian <keyword id="64385" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="State-Human-Rights-Commission">State Human Rights Commission</keyword> confirms presence of more than 2,000 unidentified bodies in unmarked graves near the Line of Control. Activists say many may be people who disappeared after being arrested by security forces.

 During a visit to the disputed border state of Jammu and Kashmir, India's Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> accuses Pakistan of waging a proxy war against India in Kashmir. 
 
2014 October - Pakistan and India exchange strongly-worded warnings, after a flare-up of violence across their common border leaves at least 18 people dead.

 An Indian Army mountaineering expedition team chanced upon the footprints of Yeti, sized 32x15 inches in the Himalayas near Makalu Base Camp, according to Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADGPI) official twitter post. However, the Army noted that the footprints were recognized a week ago, on 9 April. “This elusive snowman has only been sighted at Makalu-Barun National Park in the past,” the ADGPI highlighted. While the pictures have got everyone baffled, this is not really the first time that such a claim has questioned the existence of this snowman. Amused with the presence of the snowman, the Nepalese government, in fact, reportedly had plans to capture the ‘beast’ — and issued a <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/mysterious-footprints-of-mythical-beast-yeti-sighted-claims-indian-army/articleshow/69107428.cms">hunting license</a> for Yeti in 1950s. Pakistan has questioned the veracity of India's dossiers on <keyword id="26778" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="underworld">underworld</keyword> don <keyword id="6357714" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Dawood-Ibrahim">Dawood Ibrahim</keyword> calling them "self-serving" and said government's comments in Parliament on his whereabouts vindicated its sustained stand that the fugitive was not in its territory. 
 <keyword id="106423" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Pakistan-High-Commissioner">Pakistan High Commissioner</keyword> <keyword id="135964" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Abdul-Basit">Abdul Basit</keyword> said the comments by Minister of State for Home Haribhai Parathibhai Chaudhary in Parliament on Tuesday justified his country's worries on the issue and asserted that India has not placed any request with <keyword id="3002" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Islamabad">Islamabad</keyword> in writing for Dawood's extradition. 
 "Honestly speaking that was quite disquieting and disconcerting from our perspective and frankly that calls for some introspection. If you prepare dossiers on the basis of self-serving information, than we have every reason to be worried. Our worries are justified," he told <keyword id="157927" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Karan-Thapar">Karan Thapar</keyword> on Headlines Today. 
 <keyword id="2840570" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Contradicting-government">Contradicting government</keyword>'s earlier stand on Dawood's whereabouts, Chaudhary had said in Parliament that the government was not aware of the location of the fugitive whose deportation from Pakistan it has been demanding. 
 
Asked whether the Minister's position vindicated Pakistan's stand, he said "It does. He is not in Pakistan." 
 
On whether India either in the recent past or earlier had formally in writing requested extradition of the don, he said, "Not to my knowledge". 
 
 
When pressed further, he said, "Not to my knowledge because from our perspective as we have been saying our position is that he is not in Pakistan. So the question of extradition does not arise in the first instance." 
 
India had handed over to Pakistan several dossiers on Dawood, India's most wanted fugitive, giving details about his locations in Pakistan. 
 
 
The envoy also called Jammu and Kashmir as "mother of all issues" bilaterally and said both the countries should work with sincerity to resolve it. 
 
"First of all, it is important whether it is UN resolutions or Shimla agreement or 1999 Lahore Declaration , you need to understand from our perspective, and I think India also recognises that, Jammu and Kashmir is mother of all our issues bilaterally," he said. 
 
 The <keyword id="44309" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="High-Commissioner">High Commissioner</keyword> said other issues like Siachen, Sir Creek or water issues, terrorism, have their "roots in the Jammu and Kashmir dispute" while asserting that Islamabad wanted to normalise ties with India.
