<ul><li>Music composer <keyword id="1799839" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vanraj-Bhatia">Vanraj Bhatia</keyword> passed away at his residence in Mumbai today.</li><li>The prolific Bhatia was credited with composing over 7000 jingles which included brands like Liril, Dulux and <keyword id="26280" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="amul">Amul</keyword>'s <keyword id="96068" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Manthan">Manthan</keyword>.</li></ul>Veteran music composer Vanraj Bhatia, who over the course of his illustrious career composed music for many well-known movies and jingles, passed away in Mumbai today. He was 93 and had been bed-ridden owing to complications due to old age. Bhatia who composed music for movies including classics like 36 Chowringhee Lane, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron, Manthan and Ankur, has also composed close to 7,000 jingles over the years. He also composed the opening tunes for immensely popular television shows like <keyword id="139069" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wagle-ki-Duniya">Wagle Ki Duniya</keyword>, Banegi Apni Baat and Tamas. <keyword id="29916" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shyam-Benegal">Shyam Benegal</keyword>’s Bharat Ek Khoj’s music was also composed by him. In advertising, perhaps his most loved compositions are for Liril and Dulux. The song Mero Gaam Katha Parey from Benegal's Manthan that was also used in a brilliant ad for Amul was composed by him too. Ever since the centre has decided to intervene in the appointments at the Film and Television Institute of India (<keyword id="55490" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="FTII">FTII</keyword>) and the Central Board of Film Certification (<keyword id="238857" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="CBFC">CBFC</keyword>), it looks like the allegations of political bias that were faced last year would finally be controlled. 
 <keyword id="258297" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gajendra-Chauhan">Gajendra Chauhan</keyword>, the chairman of FTII, has not been given the chair of the head of the institute's Academic Council, made for taking important decisions. Not only this, the centre has also asked the newly appointed Censor Board revamp committee to work not from CBFC but either from Films Division or National Film Development Corporation (<keyword id="66984" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="NFDC">NFDC</keyword>) both of which are headquartered in Mumbai. 
 
Officials also said that the decision has been taken to ensure that the panel has adequate time and space to work on its report, and also that CBFC members, which have in the past been involved in controversies, are kept away from the processes. 
 There is a note on the website of NFDC, which explains the role of the revamp committee, headed by filmmaker <keyword id="29916" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shyam-Benegal">Shyam Benegal</keyword> and including filmmaker <keyword id="38943" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rakeysh-Omprakash-Mehra">Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra</keyword>, advertising professional <keyword id="6375200" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Piyush-Pandey">Piyush Pandey</keyword> and film critic <keyword id="15017" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bhawana-Somaaya">Bhawana Somaaya</keyword>. 
 
As of now, the panel is busy collecting inputs from artists in the film industry and NGOs on films. Benegal said that these inputs will be incorporated in the suggestions that would be presented to the government in the first week of March.

Government intervention in resolving Censor Board and FTII rows show positive results

Legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray's feature <keyword id="106892" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="pather-panchali" source="Orion">Pather Panchali</keyword> has been declared the best Indian film of all time by the <keyword id="2866617" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="international-federation-of-film-critics" source="Orion">International Federation of Film Critics</keyword> (FIPRESCI). The 1955 film has received the number one slot in the top ten films in the history of Indian cinema list, which was declared after a poll conducted by the India chapter of FIPRESCI. As per a press release issued by FIPRESCI-India, the poll was conducted in secret and involved 30 members. Based on Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay's 1929 Bengali novel of the same name, "Pather Panchali" was Ray's directorial debut. It starred Subir Banerjee, Kanu Banerjee, Karuna Banerjee, Uma Dasgupta, Pinaki Sengupta and Chunibala Devi. Satyajit Ray's Pather Panchali declared best Indian film of all time by International Federation of Film Critics

The underbelly of any country can be a subject of debate, but what holds a nation aloft is its constitution. And the Indian Constitution, right from its birth, has stood for social equality across the board. At least, that’s what it aspires to do, as we have learnt over the years. Considered as the Supreme Law of land, the Indian Constitution needs to be revisited and reinvented as the times change and generations need a deeper understanding of their historical and democratic perspectives. 
 
Right now, India is at the crossroads. The old country that only rested on its past glory and celebrated its Independence from the British, a process that tore apart its very soul, has now emerged as one of the top powers in the world. But then, secularism is being questioned now and credentials are put under the scanner by its own people. So the time is quite ripe for revisiting the Indian Constitution. 
 As we all know, Dr <keyword id="857441" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bhimrao-Ramji-Ambedkar">Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar</keyword> is hailed as the <keyword id="266114" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="prime-architect">prime architect</keyword> of the Indian Constitution and he headed the <keyword id="2027910" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Constitution-Drafting-Committee">Constitution Drafting Committee</keyword>. This 448-page document is divided into 25 parts, starting with a preamble. This sacrosanct document is the lifeline of India that holds together the country’s diverse cultures and different faiths. 
 
When the time is right to take another look at a document which is as old as Independence itself, it needs a newer perspective and format to reach the people coming from different age-groups. The old and the wise may have an easy understanding of the huge and complex document, but the young people need to be clued in on what governs their life on this land. 
 <keyword id="271" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="actor">Actor</keyword> <keyword id="6355923" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Aamir-Khan">Aamir Khan</keyword> could be touching hearts with his soul-stirring show Satyamev Jayate, which is laying bare today’s realities – both positive and negative – on a private channel. 
 But what’s actually significant now is the new show on <keyword id="2170947" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Rajya-Sabha-Television">Rajya Sabha Television</keyword> called Samvidhaan, made by none other than the renowned director <keyword id="29916" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Shyam-Benegal">Shyam Benegal</keyword>. In the 80s Benegal had directed Discovery of India (Bharat Ek Khoj), based on a book penned by the <keyword id="202495" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="first-prime-minister">first Prime Minister</keyword> of independent India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. The show was a huge hit in those days when Doordarshan was the only TV channel in the country. But the reason behind its success was not the absence of choice for viewers but the impeccable treatment of characters and the intriguing story-telling through every single frame that fascinated the viewers, irrespective of their age-groups. 
 
Benegal, who has created a niche for himself with his supremely well-made movies in the 70s and 80s – mostly categorised as parallel cinema – is experimenting again with his 10-part mini series titled Samvidhaan – The Story of the Making of the Constitution of India. The show, telecast every Sunday at 10 am, a ‘prime’ time slot, targets a pan-India audience with its discourse on the Indian Constitution. 
 
Enough of analyses and interpretations have come up regarding the political situations that existed around the time when the Indian Constitution was drafted. The work of drafting a constitution for India started soon after the country gained its political independence from the ruling Great Britain. 
 
The show, which tells us the story of the Indian Constitution, lays as much emphasis on the incidents that occurred around the period when this all-important document was made. The first draft of Bharat Ka Samvidhan, as it is known in Hindi, was first submitted on November 4, 1947. The <keyword id="2170946" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Draft-Committee">Draft Committee</keyword> had spent considerable time, developing a constitution that was made to suit the specific needs of India – a country which had lived through a turbulent past and was looking forward to continue on its own after remaining under the British rule for two centuries. 
 
Amendments, discussions and debates took place for about two years since the first draft was presented, leading to nearly 2,000 amendments to the original document prepared by the Drafting Committee members, headed by Dr Ambedkar. 
 
The Assembly intermittently held open sessions for the public over these two years before adopting the Constitution, which was approved by its 308 members on January 24, 1950. Two days later, the Constitution, which was federal in nature, became the Supreme Law of the land, and all the States and Union Territories of India came under its jurisdiction. 
 
The exercise during the days of putting together this crucial document was not only political, but also secular and neutral in nature – keeping in mind the welfare of all communities with special focus on the underprivileged. It was a hugely emotional moment for the leaders involved in the process and they made sure that the Constitution was accepted in the Parliament. 
 
With Samvidhaan, the show on television, Shyam Benegal tells an engaging story of a country that wrote its own fate to ensure a better socio-economic and political future, instead of being tossed around and dominated by stronger forces. The show comes at a time when India seems to be on the verge of leadership change and every poll survey shows that the secular and minority-friendly atmosphere of the country is in jeopardy. 
 
Maybe, just maybe, the country’s youth will spare a thought for what dominates their life and will come to respect it more than they respect technology.

It ended by showcasing the model of co-operative organization of milkmaids and farmers with a narrative that said, “Every morning 17 lac women across 9,000 villages, bringing in milk worth Rs.4 crores, are now celebrating their economic independence thanks to the co-operative movement called Amul.” It was one of the first campaigns to bring women to the forefront. Amul has truly played its trump card by taking us on its rich advertising journey, that was way ahead of its time. According to BARC-Neilsen’s recently released report, the Ramayan re-telecast garnered the highest-ever rating for a Hindi GEC show since 2015. Amul is smartly targeting the older demographic here to remind them of simpler days. <keyword id="1156313" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="The-Film-and-Television-Institute-of-India">The Film and Television Institute of India</keyword> (<keyword id="55490" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="FTII">FTII</keyword>) controversy took an ugly turn today. Its students and alumni, who arrived in Delhi to meet officials of the Information and Broadcasting (I&amp;B) Ministry, were taken into custody for protesting outside it. After more than 20 days of agitation against the appointment of <keyword id="54" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="TV-actor">TV actor</keyword> <keyword id="258297" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Gajendra-Chauhan">Gajendra Chauhan</keyword> as the new chairman of the institute, the students came here. The <keyword id="6359715" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="protest">protest</keyword> was supported by students of <keyword id="6360099" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Delhi-University">Delhi University</keyword>, <keyword id="58265" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Jawaharlal-Nehru-University">Jawaharlal Nehru University</keyword> (JNU) and Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI). 

	The FTII students have been boycotting classes, abandoning academic work in protest against Chauhan, who according to them does not have “vision and knowledge” to lead the premiere institution of film-making. 
 

	Nakul Singh Sahani, an independent film-maker and FTII alumnus, said: “The students were holding a peaceful protest outside the ministry at Shastri Bhawan when they were dragged by police and arrested. We came here to arrive at a conclusion and want a fresh selection of a chairman and some governing council members of the institute. We also want a transparent system where we could know how these appointments were done.”
 <keyword id="2933028" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Cinematographer-Saurabh-Vishwakarma">Cinematographer Saurabh Vishwakarma</keyword>, who passed out from FTII in 2004, said: “It is a prestigious institution and the post of the chairman is not one that can be offered to anyone. If a person has achieved eminence in his field and his work has been recognized, then it adds to his credentials. Such person can be appointed as is its head.” 

	Sahani passed out from the Pune-based institute in 2006. He said: “Chauhan has zero credential to be the chairman. The TV actor was appointed as he is associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and not because of his depth of knowledge.”
 

	Moreover, there are some members in the FTII governing council who have been selected due to their closeness to Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), he said, asking “do they have any idea about film-making, script writing or can they teach students or plan their syllabus and conduct workshops”.
 “Chauhan doesn’t have the required experience to run the top most institute of film-making, which enjoys certain credibility in India and abroad. How will he lead the institution,” asked Aditi Sharma, film-maker and owner of <keyword id="2933027" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Apple-Box-Films">Apple Box Films</keyword>. 

	She said: "There were eminent people in the field of cinema before Chauhan who occupied this prestigious post. The legacy has to be maintained and respected.”
 The post has been previously held by National award-winning film-maker <keyword id="29916" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Shyam-Benegal">Shyam Benegal</keyword>, veteran actor Vinod Khanna, Kannada writer U R Ananthamurthy, film director <keyword id="222175" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Saeed-Akhtar-Mirza">Saeed Akhtar Mirza</keyword>, among others. 

	This type of political interference is not new to institutions of higher learning in India, Sharma said, adding IITs and IIMs are also its victims. 
 

	Thousands of students sit for the test and compete to get an entry in FTII, said Himanshu Prajapati, second year student of film direction. “People like Chauhan will destroy the credibility of the institute,” he said.
