We work very closely with governments to formulate regulations and policies that help keep up with positive changes that can come about with effective technology.”<br /><br /><keyword id="6360637" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kohli">Kohli</keyword> did not out rule the possibility of Uber embracing other modes of transport in the future but maintained that bike-sharing will be the focus for the company, “Bike-sharing provides first-mile and last-mile more than any other vehicle. The focus will be to expand it in more cities over the next few months.”<br /><br />In terms of including second-hand vehicles and using the existing private vehicles on the road, Kohli thought that it’s a great idea, “Private ride-sharing is not allowed in India and while we’d like to introduce the concept with a monetary incentive to help scale-up, the government still has to embrace the idea. We saw that Pool has been a huge success in apprehensive markets like Delhi which accounts for the world’s third largest market for UberPOOL.” <br />

Calling such initiatives micro entrepreneurship opportunities, Kohli said that the company welcomes any car that is well maintained on its platform and partnership with second-hand vehicle dealerships could be a possibility. The company helps its driver partners with financing and vehicle purchase so this could be revolutionary in utilizing the existing cars on the road, if implemented.<br /><br />According to the Delhi Parking Policy, released in June 2017, the city has more than one crore registered vehicles, of which over 90 percent are private vehicles.<br /><br /> More than 30% of Uber’s total trips in Delhi are POOL trips. Over time, UberPOOL riders in Delhi have contributed to save over 19 million kilometres driven, which equals to saving of 936 kilo-litres of fuel and cut over 22 lakh kgs of CO2 emissions. As more people in more cities use pooling services, it will help contribute to the envisioned future of more people in fewer cars, fewer people owning cars and fewer cars on the road.

<br /> During the session Naren asked him about the scope of Asian <keyword id="4144533" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="STEM-talent">STEM talent</keyword> in USA, post which Uber gave DesiOPT a one year contract to provide STEM talent.<br />

<keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword> India wants the government to allow the company to incentivise people when they use their cars on the cab aggregator's platform to share rides with others. This option is prohibited by the Motor Vehicles Act.<br />

Uber feels that this option will help reduce air pollution in New Delhi by cutting the number of duplicate journeys as the vehicle emissions produce 30% of the pollution in the capital, according to a report by the Observer Research Foundation.<br />

If private car owners are able to register with Uber as drivers, all they have to do is input the time of their travel and route so that people in the vicinity going in same direction can hitch a ride.<br />

"We would like to work with the government to make this a reality," Shweta Rajpal Kohli, Uber's India policy head, told ET.<br />
<br />
Ride-Sharing, however, is different from Uber's carpooling service, which involves drivers of vehicles with commercial licences.<br />
<br />
"Services like Uber can instantly match passengers headed in the same direction at the same time, thereby reducing the number of duplicate journeys," Kohli told ET.<br />
<br />
"We would therefore be keen to support the government in every way possible and help use carpooling and ride-sharing as solutions to address the rising pollution and congestion in the city," he added.<br />
<br /> Uber experimented with ride sharing in <keyword id="6354321" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword> and in New Delhi in the first phase of the oddeven vehicle-plying rule last year, but the model known as UberCommute did not find many takers.The Motor Vehicles Act doesn't allow private vehicles to be used for hire or rewards.<br />

According to sources, initial conversations with the Delhi government on the issue have been positive.
