"This spike followed the government's decision to allow sugar mills to use cane juice or syrup to produce ethanol for the ethanol supply year (ESY) 2024-25," Avdhut Bagkar, Technical and Derivatives Analyst at StoxBox, said. The government on Thursday permitted the use of sugarcane juice and sugar syrup for ethanol production in the 2024-25 ethanol supply year, reversing last year's ban. In December 2023, the government prohibited the use of sugarcane juice or sugar syrup for ethanol production in the 2023-24 ESY (December-November) to ensure adequate sugar availability for domestic consumption and keep prices in check. "Sugar mills and distilleries are allowed to produce ethanol from sugarcane juice/sugar syrup, B-Heavy molasses as well as C-Heavy molasses for ESY 2024-25 as per the agreement/allocation with OMCs (oil marketing companies)," the food ministry order said. The Food Ministry and Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry will periodically review the diversion of sugar for ethanol production vis-a-vis sugar production in the country to ensure year-round availability of sugar for domestic consumption, it added. India is the world's second largest sugar producing country after Brazil.

The scrip of Rana Sugars plunged 3.21 per cent to Rs 25.35 apiece, <keyword id="20682742" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mawana-sugars" source="keywords">Mawana Sugars</keyword> slumped 2.81 per cent to Rs 101.70, Rajshree Sugars &amp; Chemicals tumbled 2.50 per cent to Rs 72.62, <keyword id="20682741" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shree-renuka-sugars" source="keywords">Shree Renuka Sugars</keyword> declined 2.41 per cent to Rs 48.50, KCP Sugar &amp; Industries declined 2.20 per cent to Rs 40.87, and EID Parry (India) slipped 1.57 per cent to Rs 629.20 apiece on the BSE. On Wednesday, the central government announced a hike in the Fair and Remunerative Price (<keyword id="20544473" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="frp" source="keywords">FRP</keyword>), the minimum rate that mills need to pay to sugarcane growers. The FRP has been increased by Rs 25 to Rs 340 per quintal for the 2024-25 season starting October. The decision to increase the FRP was taken at the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by Prime Minister <keyword id="19895781" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="keywords">Narendra Modi</keyword>. This is the highest FRP for sugarcane announced by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government since coming to power in 2014. This is the second time that the Modi government has increased the FRP by Rs 25 per quintal in one go. "This decision of central government is going to benefit more than 5 crore sugarcane farmers (including family members) and lakhs of other persons involved in sugar sector," an official statement said on Wednesday.

Sugar stocks slip after govt raises fair price to ₹340 per quintal

New Delhi, Shree <keyword id="70097" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Renuka-Sugars" source="Orion">Renuka Sugars</keyword> Ltd has reported a consolidated net loss of Rs 205.6 crore in the second quarter of this fiscal year. Its net loss stood at Rs 141.6 crore in the year-ago period. Total income rose to Rs 2,564.7 crore in the July-September period of this fiscal year from Rs 2,203.3 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year, according to a regulatory filing on Wednesday. Total expenses increased to Rs 2,771.9 crore in the period under review, from Rs 2,335.1 crore a year ago. Shree Renuka Sugars, a subsidiary of Singapore-based Wilmar Sugar Holdings Pte Ltd, is one of India's largest sugar and green energy (ethanol and renewable power) producers.

<ul><li>India plans to start using 20% <keyword id="440140" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ethanol-blended-petrol" source="Orion">ethanol blended petrol</keyword> from 2025.</li><li>Currently, most petrol pumps give 10% ethanol blended petrol.</li><li>Economists argue that ethanol production in the future will have to rely more on maize and less on sugarcane and rice. </li></ul> At present, when you go to fill petrol, the petrol you get is mixed with 10% ethanol and the government is looking to double this by 2025. Prime Minister Narendra Modi rolled out 20% ethanol-blended petrol in select gas stations in 11 States and Union Territories earlier this year as part of a programme to increase use of biofuels to cut emissions as well as dependence on foreign exchange-draining imports. First, how is ethanol made? Most of the fuel ethanol produced around the world is made by fermenting the sugar in the starches of grains such as corn, sorghum, and barley, and the sugar in sugar cane and sugar beets, as per the US Energy Information Administration. <keyword id="13884282" type="General" weightage="60" keywordseo="what-is-ethanol-blending" source="Orion">What is ethanol blending</keyword> and how does it help? <keyword id="146615" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ethanol-blending" source="Orion">Ethanol blending</keyword> is nothing but blended motor fuel containing ethyl alcohol that is at least 99% pure and is derived from agricultural products, and blended exclusively with petrol. An ethanol blended petrol helps on two counts. One, ethanol is a biofuel and so it is good for the environment. Second, it helps India as a country to cut down on its crude oil import bills. Ethanol and the environment Grain-based ethanol cuts greenhouse gas emissions significantly by 44 to 52% compared to gasoline, according to the US Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory. A report by Renewable Fuels Association says that researchers from Harvard, MIT, and Tufts have concluded that today's corn ethanol offers an average GHG reduction of 46% versus gasoline. Emerging technologies promise to boost that reduction to near 70% in the next few years, according to USDA. So, what is the government’s plan? The government has said it plans to push up the current 10% ethanol blended petrol to 20% in the next two years across India. This work is happening in two phases. In the first phase, 15 cities will be covered and then it will be expanded throughout the country in the next two years. Consumer Affairs Minister Piyush Goyal has said that the government is confident of achieving its target by 2025. Is E-20 petrol available currently? E-20 (petrol blendend with 20% ethanol) was initially available in only 84 petrol pumps in the country. A media report says that it is currently available in close to 1,000 stations. It is noteworthy here that the price of ethanol blended petrol isn’t different for the consumer. Challenges being faced by the industry Currently, most of the ethanol being produced uses either sugarcane on rice as its raw material. Both these crops are water intensive. A month back, when rice prices shot up, The Indian ethanol manufacturers faced a tough time as rice supply was stopped to the industry. This has led to agricultural economists like Ashok Gulati to advocate relying on maize as a policy. Price hike demand accepted The government hiked ethanol rates a month back after the industry demanded a hike arguing without proper returns there cannot be additional investments to boost supply. Now, the purchase price of ethanol produced from rice has been increased by ₹4.75/litre to ₹60.29/litre and for ethanol produced from maize, price has been hiked by ₹6.01/litre to ₹62.36/litre. The reliance on sugar… The Niti Aayog estimates that India will require 1,400 crore litres of ethanol to achieve its target of 20% blending by 2025. This, in turn, means that there is a big jump required in the production of sugar. A report by the Hindu states that out of the 550 crore litres of ethanol that has been produced since November last year, 450 crore litres came from the sugar industry. What about falling sugar production and its impact? Erratic rainfall in the 2023 monsoon season means that sugar production in India will be hit. In fact, a report by Reuters says that India, the second biggest producer of sugar globally, is considering banning sugar exports for the first time in seven years to fight the deficit. Moreover, sugar prices in the country have jumped by more than 3% in a fortnight to their highest level in six years. Concerns about sugar production... The Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) has forecasted a 3.3% production fall in the current sugar year to 31.7 mn tonnes. It is roughly estimated that the country consumes 27.5mn tonnes leaving only a surplus of approximately 4 mn tonnes, as per a Systematix Institutional Equities report. This will hit ethanol production and thus the push to shift to maize by the government. How have the <keyword id="97985" type="General" weightage="40" keywordseo="sugar-stocks" source="Orion">sugar stocks</keyword> fared? Sugar stocks have had a mixed bag performance for most of the past year. While Balrampur Chini is up 3.4% and Dalmia Bharat Sugar is up almost 10% year-to-date, Shree Renuka Sugars and Dwarikesh Sugar have slipped over 7%.

New Delhi, Feb 13 () Shree Renuka Sugars Ltd, a Wilmar group company, on Thursday reported a consolidated net loss of Rs 208.6 crore in the quarter ended December. The company had posted a net profit of Rs 311.1 crore in the year-ago period. Total income dipped to Rs 1,003.9 crore in the third quarter of this fiscal from Rs 1,140 crore in the corresponding period of previous year. "As on December 31, 2019, the current liabilities of the group exceeds its current assets by Rs 3,311 crore. The group has incurred continuing losses in the previous year ended March 31, 2019, and in current nine months period ended December 31, 2019 before exceptional items. The group has negative net worth of Rs 569.9 crore as at December 31, 2019. The group management expects to generate operational cash-inflows in the next 12 months, which will support the group to meets its near future cash obligations," the company said in a regulatory filing. Shree Renuka Sugars Ltd (SRSL) is one of the largest sugar manufacturers and refiners in India. It is present across sugar, ethanol, co-generation, trading and engineering segments.  Moreover the US rating agency said mounting political turmoil and the difficulties faced by President <keyword id="440692" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dilma-Rousseff">Dilma Rousseff</keyword>'s government in tackling growing debt was the main reason behind the downgrade.

Let’s see what happened after the US rating agency downgraded Brazil: Ø Stocks of companies with revenue exposure or investment plans in Brazil fell in Thursday's trade. Oil and Natural Gas Corp and <keyword id="6354248" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Videocon">Videocon</keyword> Industries, which have heavy investments in Brazil's oil and gas sector, fell 2.36% and 0.7%, respectively. 
 
Ø Shree Renuka Sugars, which made acquisitions in Brazil recently, fell 1.6%. UPL plunged 4.5%. 
 
Ø Torrent Pharma dropped 3%, Glenmark Pharma fell 1.9%, while Cadila Healthcare was down half a per cent. 
 
Ø Lupin declined 2%, while Sun Pharma was down 0.3%. KEC International slipped 2.3%, while Rallis India was trading flat. Praj Industries and MM Forgings fell 2.6% each. 
 
In April 2008, Brazil was awarded an investment-grade rating by the US rating agency. At that time the country's economy was on rise. However, sliding commodity prices and austerity have created a recession. 
 
Earlier this week, economist said Brazil's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Gross+Domestic+Product+">Gross Domestic Product</a> is expected to contract by 2.3% and the nation will have to borrow to cover all its interest payments (if interest payments are included, the total deficit this year is projected to be 8-9%). 
 
The faster-than-anticipated downgrade of the nation from investment grade will likely rock Brazilian financial markets and increase borrowing costs for the government and Brazilian companies.
