The company’s shares were trading at ₹417 at 9:49 a.m., on January 21. <br /><br />The Indian department store chain — which sells everything from apparel to cosmetics — reported a consolidated revenue of ₹972 crore for the December quarter (Q3 of fiscal year 2022). Shoppers Stop launches an ad film for the homecoming of Maa Durga with Swastika Dutta

India is becoming a better place for children to live in with top global retailers eyeing the market here. The Children's Place, top childrenswear retailer in the US, is tying up with hospital chains in India to visit patients in maternity wards and gift merchandise for their newborns.
<br /><br /> "As the child grows, we are hoping they become regular consumers for our brand and we kind of adopt their fashion sense since birth," said J Suresh, managing director and CEO of <keyword id="589879" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Arvind-Lifestyle">Arvind Lifestyle</keyword>, which has a franchisee arrangement with The Children's Place (TCP) and plans to open 50 stores of the mass premium brand in the next four years, to ET. <br /><br />

	TCP is one of the several international brands foraying into kids' clothing and accessories market in India to cash in on a growing demand for branded products and to fill a vacuum created by domestic brands' failure to scale up.
<br /><br /> British denim brand <keyword id="737532" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Pepe-Jeans">Pepe Jeans</keyword> plans to bring in its kidswear range into the country this month and open 10 exclusive outlets, while French childrenswear brand Jacadi and Malaysian brand Poney are looking to expand their presence. <br /><br />

	Industry insiders say there's a gap in this market because Indian brands such as Weekender Kids, Catmoss, Gini and Jony, Jack n Jill and Lilliput have had to either shut shop completely or scale down operations over the last decade as they couldn't sustain the rapid expansion cost.
<br /><br />

	Even Mahindra Retail that entered the segment over five years ago with Mom and Me chain has shut nearly one-fourth of its stores.
<br /><br /> "New players will fill this void," said Govind Shrikhande, managing director at department store chain <keyword id="64373" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shoppers-Stop">Shoppers Stop</keyword>, to ET. "Most players lost out due to their own internal operational issues and not external factors since demand for such products has always been good," he said. <br /><br /> Shoppers Stop — which runs nearly 38 shops of <keyword id="128528" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mothercare">MotherCare</keyword>, a British retailer of products for expecting mothers and newborns, within its department stores — has seen share of kidswear in its overall sales double to 10 per cent over the past few years. <br /><br />

	Many global brands are exploring growth opportunities in emerging markets as economic growth and birth rates slow in western markets, and India is seen as a high-potential market.
<br /><br />

	"Among the emerging economies, India has the distinct advantage of being a country with promising economic outlook coupled with growing kids population and increasing discretionary spending on kids," Amit Gugnani, senior vice president at consultancy firm Technopak, told ET.
<br /><br />

	As much as 29 per cent of India's population is below 14 years, he said. For the US, Europe and Japan shares of children in their population are 19 per cent, 16 per cent and 13 per cent, respectively.
<br /><br /> A study by industry body <keyword id="6355988" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Assocham">Assocham</keyword> has estimated that kidswear market in the country will be worth Rs 95,000 crore by 2016, growing at a compound annual growth rate of about 20 per cent. <br /><br />

	The market is, however, largely controlled by unbranded local players.
<br /><br /> "While the kidswear market is very huge, the contribution of branded segment is not very high," Kavindra Mishra, CEO of <keyword id="3014364" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Pepe-Jeans-India">Pepe Jeans India</keyword> told ET. He, however, pointed out organised players are growing much faster than the overall market. <br /><br />

	"There is a vacuum in the branded kids wear category. And that is why the growth of the branded segment in this category is four times more than the rest of the category," Mishra said.
<br /><br />

	Industry insiders said childrenswear is not an easy market to be in.
<br /><br />

	The biggest challenge is, retailers have to handle 8-9 different sizes, nearly double the number of different fits for adults, putting constant pressure on supply chain.
<br /><br />

	Another issue is that since kids are expected to outgrow the clothes in less than a year, people expect their prices to be relatively cheap.
<br /><br />

	Some Indian kidswear brands are finding it difficult to compete with private labels and regional brands that have managed to decode the requirements of value conscious consumer better.
<br /><br />

	"What parents expect is that the price compared to the market abroad should be half, whereas the manufacturing cost is not half. This is one of the problems why no brand is being able to do well in kidswear in India," said Suresh of Arvind.
<br /><br />

	But this price restriction is slowly changing as kids begin to influence buying decision.
<br /><br />

	"Kids today are also becoming brand conscious and have their own preferences while the parents are ready to shell out money; probably it is the feeling that they couldn't do it so they want it for their kids," said Veena Satish, CEO of Raavee House of Chic that launched the first Jacadi store in Bengaluru earlier this year, to ET.

India becoming a hotspot for global kids' fashion retailers

New Delhi, Jan 31 () Retail chain Shoppers Stop Ltd on Friday reported a consolidated net loss of Rs 6.51 crore in the third quarter ended on December 31, 2019.
<p> The company had posted a net profit of Rs 41.66 crore in the October-December quarter a year ago, Shoppers Stop said in a BSE filing.
</p><p> Total income in the December quarter was marginally down at Rs 1,025.53 crore as against Rs 1,027.57 crore in the year-ago period.
</p><p> "Against a strong base of Q3 FY19 and a subdued retail landscape with a dampened festive season, the revenue growth was muted. Nonetheless, the company pro-actively increased its productivity and efficiencies by keeping the costs in control," the company said.
</p><p> "In a challenging economic environment we found opportunities to seed future growth for the company by aggressive expansion through internal accruals," Shoppers Stop MD and CEO Rajiv Suri said.
</p><p> Total expenses in the said quarter were at Rs 963.90 crore, compared with Rs 961.02 crore in the third quarter of 2018-19.
</p><p> Commenting on the outlook Suri said "during the year we opened 28 stores (8 department and 20 beauty) and plan to open 23 stores (4 department, 11 deauty and 8 airport stores) in Q4. This expansion will add circa Rs 500 crore top-line on an annualized basis, more importantly these stores have been EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization) accretive within the first quarter of operation".

Shoppers Stop posts Q3 net loss at Rs 6.5 cr

<br /> "Post demonetisation, November sales had turned weak. But December onwards the sales growth has been strong and in double digits,” <keyword id="162214" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Govind-Shrikhande">Govind Shrikhande</keyword>, managing director at <keyword id="64373" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shoppers-Stop">Shoppers Stop</keyword>, told ET. He expects this year's end-of-season sale to beat all previous records.<br />

The e-commerce websites such as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Myntra&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Myntra</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Jabong&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Jabong</a>, Tata Cliq and Reliance's <keyword id="3421090" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ajio">Ajio</keyword>, too, have got good response to their end-of-season sales that coincided with those of brick-and-mortar retailers.<br />
<br /> Top retailer <keyword id="44949" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Future-group">Future Group</keyword>'s Brand Factory, which retails some 200 fashion brands including Wrangler, <keyword id="69300" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="nike">Nike</keyword>, Louis Philippe and <keyword id="197443" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Allen-Solly">Allen Solly</keyword>, said it crossed its sales target for special sale events planned around demonetisation.<br />

"The only impact of demonetisation was in the first week after announcement. We are out of it now,, Jitendernath Patri, chief marketing officer at Central, told ET.<br />
<br />
However, most brands report healthy growth in sales some feel it could have been better.<br />
<br /> "This could have been one of the best seasons if not for demonetisation,” Kavindra Mishra, chief executive at denim brand <keyword id="737532" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pepe-Jeans">Pepe Jeans</keyword> that reported 18% likefor-like growth in the sale period, told ET.<br />
<br /> Yogeshwar Sharma, executive director at Delhi's <keyword id="726947" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Select-Citywalk-Mall">Select Citywalk Mall</keyword>, expects luxury retailers to grow at a slower pace or remain flat, while other categories will grow 10-12%.<br />
<br />
"All retailers have put their best foot forward and are giving 40-60% off on merchandise, which is good enough to attract people to malls,” he told ET.

No cash blues for shoppers, despite demonetisation; top retailers expect 15-18% growth

<br /><ul><li><keyword id="6354743" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon-India">Amazon India</keyword> is pushing for an offline presence in India where only one-third of the population has access to the internet. </li><li>The company is reportedly making its payments services available in brick-and-mortar stores like Shoppers Stop. </li><li>It’s also looking to open up more Amazon Kiosks in locations around the country.</li></ul><br />Amazon in no stranger to Indian market, in fact it’s the largest e-commerce platform in India. But, after seven years of pulling people online, the e-tailer is reaching out them by going offline.<br /><br />Amazon India is expanding by marking an entry in brick-and-mortar stores as well making its payments service, <keyword id="4009819" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon-Pay">Amazon Pay</keyword>, available in neighbourhood outlets. <br /><br />Amazon Pay — based on India’s unified payments interface (UPI) — is already operational at Shoppers Stop, a department store chain with 83 stores across the country. And, according to sources the company also has plans to make the same service available in one of India’s supermarket chains, More, later this year according to a <a href="https://www.livemint.com/companies/news/amazon-pay-makes-an-offline-push-with-scan-and-pay-service-1553651647685.html">report</a> by LiveMint. <br /><br />It’s not that these stores are the largest in India, but because Amazon has stake in both establishments. In fact, five Shoppers Stop outlets were <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/industry/revealed-why-shoppers-stop-is-shutting-more-stores/1121881/">shut down</a> in 2018 and more were ‘re-sized’ to recuperate from losses.<br /><br />

<br />Amazon kiosks, on the other hand, have been around since 2017 with four operational outlets so far — two in Karnataka, one in Mumbai and one in Ahmedabad. But in 2019, the Jeff Bezos enterprise has aggressive <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/amazon-plans-to-open-over-100-kiosks-across-malls-in-india-report/articleshow/68579967.cms">plans</a> to expand by opening more than 100 more counters by the end of the year.<br /><br /><strong>Why offline matters<br /></strong><br />Digital wallets like Paytm have become a popular way to make transactions at India’s brick-and-mortar retail stores. <br /><br />Even though internet penetration in India finally <a href="https://imrbint.com/site/reports/i-cube">crossed</a> the half a billion mark in 2018 that’s only about one-third of the total population. In fact, online transactions only account for 10% of overall transactions in the country. <br /><br />Paytm, a homegrown payments platform that’s been expanding its offline presence through QR codes at merchant outlets, <a href="https://www.medianama.com/2018/09/223-paytm-5m-offline-merchants-upi/">claims</a> that more than 40% of its recorded transactions are offline.<br /><br />In fact, the volume of unified payments interface (UPI) — the payment tools that allows for digital payment transactions — transactions have grown to account for 9% of all retail payments within two years of inception, according to a <a href="http://image-src.bcg.com/Images/BCG-Global-Payments-2018-Oct-2018_tcm9-205095.pdf">report</a> by BCG.<br /><br />The Amazon Pay UPI was only launched a little over a month ago. "So we're addressing the issue that is the source of concern in our stores, and that has not been the case for concealed [carry]."</p><h2>Walmart will post signs stating changes to its open-carry policy</h2><p>Walmart plans to post signage in its stores to educate customers on its new policy regarding the open carry of firearms, Bartlett said.</p><p>"We'll have signage that will go up in the coming days and weeks," he said. My Costco app has LOCAL INVENTORY SEARCH. However, with online sellers avoiding deep discounts to shore up their finances, customers seem to come back to the brick-and-mortar retail stores, bringing back their days of glory.<br />

Same-store sales were at their highest in four years in the last quarter of 2015, as people came looking for aggressive promotions and strong demand for fresh merchandise.<br />
<br /> "The competition intensity has no doubt reduced vis-a-vis online," <keyword id="44949" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Future-group">Future Group</keyword> CEO Kishore Biyani told ET. "This is just the beginning of their downfall since the ecommerce model of discounting was never there to stay."<br />
<br /> While <keyword id="64373" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shoppers-Stop">Shoppers Stop</keyword> and <keyword id="1854044" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Future-Lifestyle">Future Lifestyle</keyword> recorded an 18% growth in Sep-Dec quarter, <keyword id="385207" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Lifestyle-International">Lifestyle International</keyword>, Arrow and Flying Machine grew at 12 to 15%, a two-year high for them.<br />
<br /> In 2014, <keyword id="2246014" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="physical-stores">physical stores</keyword> reported subdued demand because of ecommerce players attracting consumers with their discounts and ease of shopping. However, for the festive season that went by, offline stores were better prepared, having offered aggressive promotion strategies.<br /> Talking of online retailers, this time, a limited number of brands had discounts running, because e-commerce players wanted to protect margins and turn profitable. The three biggest players in India, Amazon, <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> and <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword>, had Rs 5,052 crore in FY15 as combined losses.<br />

Also, having hitting the buy button all these years, consumers also have come to understand that low online prices mean out-of-season merchandise or old stock from brands.<br />

However, this doesn’t mark the end of online shopping in India. For example, Amazon sold more goods in the end quarter than it did in all of 2014. The retail space has enough market for both online and offline products.<br />
