From stylish bras and period panties to fashionable athleisure and footwear, the brand strives to empower young girls during their crucial teenage years with its meticulously crafted collection. Bound by both family ties as sisters-in-law and a shared passion for business, Richa and Vani, the founders of D'chica, embarked on a new entrepreneurial journey after facing setbacks with their previous venture focused on infants and toddlers. Despite the challenges that led to the closure of their initial business, the sisters-in-law remained undeterred. Instead, they embraced failure as a powerful teacher, drawing invaluable lessons from the experience. A DIY cooking kit maker Chefling raises ₹40 lakhs from four 'sharks'

CarDekho founder Amit Jain offers ₹5 crore for a pitch on 'Shark Tank India'

<ul><li>As many as 27 startups that appeared on the show secured funds from external investors, says Redseer Consulting.</li><li>Startups on the show cumulatively raised ₹100 crore on <keyword id="1417364" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shark-tank" source="Orion">Shark Tank</keyword> across seasons 1 and 2.</li><li>The biggest shark amongst all is Aman Gupta, the founder of BoAt who invested ₹24.6 crore across 70 deals. </li></ul><keyword id="13108748" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shark-tank-judges" source="Orion">Shark Tank judges</keyword> are indeed sharks who have bargained the best deals — putting in a lot less than what was asked — and making the startup founders dilute a lot more than they intended to. True to their nature, they also picked a lot of winners who were able to gain business, funding along with publicity from screen time – that has helped many D2C brands in particular. Redseer Consulting, in a recently released report, has found that 27 startups that appeared on season 1 of the show secured funds from external investors. ”Most startups that appeared on the show secured deals 6 times greater in value from outside investors within a span of 1.5 years. Their current valuation is also 2.5 times greater than what they were valued on <keyword id="15913368" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shark-tank-season-1" source="Orion">Shark Tank season 1</keyword>,” said Kanishka Mohan, partner at Redseer Consulting. In season 1, as many as 117 pitches were made, out of which 65 of them accepted deals on the show, 20 rejected deals and 32 were not offered a deal at all. All these sections of startups, received a fair amount of interest from external investors. Six startups which were not offered a deal on the show like — On2Cook, Theka Coffee, Good Piggy Bank, Sabjikothi and Nushka were able to secure deals outside. “In all, most startups that appeared on the show fared well afterward, securing better deals and increasing valuations,” the consulting firm said. Who’s the biggest shark? As much as ₹100 crore was invested in startups that pitched their ideas on Shark Tank season 1 and 2 by eight sharks. And the shark with the most appetite is Aman Gupta, the founder of BoAt who invested ₹24.6 crore across 70 deals. He is followed closely by Peyush Bansal, the co-founder and CEO of Lenskart who invested ₹21.5 crore across 67 deals. The most active shark of season 1 who missed the second season is Ashneer Grover, the co-founder of BharatPe, who invested ₹5.3 crore in 21 deals. Shaadi.com founder Anupam Mittal who was recognized as one of India’s best angel investors, as per Hurun, had invested ₹14.4 crore across 50 deals on the show. Sharks loved to invest in startups pertaining to the food and beverage sector . Amongst the few deals made in healthcare and manufacturing, most of them came from Thapar and Bansal who have expertise in these sectors. “Most of the deals made on the show had one shark onboard; however, it never happened that all the sharks invested in a single business,” Redseer said. <table style="border-width: initial; However, the massive success of Season 1 turned the skeptics around. “There was a lot of resistance (amongst VCs) initially. How can you take the Shark Tank of the USA and dramatize it for India? Once India embraced it, VCs would come and comment, ‘Oh we also got a call but we didn’t have time’. I’ve heard this so many times,” said Mittal. As per Singh and Thapar, Aman Gupta and Anupam Mittal have embraced their newfound fame with the most ease. They even lauded Gupta’s ‘social media game’. The Indian consumer is very smart - they’ll buy after making their own decision. Yes, brand popularity soars across India. But does it impact sales? I don’t think so. The consumer will still see the product and its value proposition. They won’t buy it because it’s Aman’s product or Peyush’s product. I don’t think that happens in India,” shared Gupta. Bansal echoed Gupta’s statement, adding that it would be wrong to say that someone appears on Shark Tank India to build a personal brand. Jain also backed them stating if the product isn’t good, increased brand awareness won’t help sell it. The massive success of S1 impacted the quality of pitches in the second season. According to the judges, contestants pitching on Season 2 were more informed and far better prepared than their S1 counterparts, and ‘solid stories and entrepreneurs’ from across India appeared this time. “Startups (pitching on the season) with ₹30-₹50 crore revenue, ₹10 crore profits from bootstrapped companies,- families of 2-3 guys doing it. We were shocked, blown out of our brains - from small towns in India, from God knows where,” added Mittal. The average time for a pitch extended to 1.5 hours in S2, as compared to 53 minutes in S1 as the contestants were already prepared with the answers to commonly asked questions and used phrases and words most likely to impress the judges. “They had learned (how to pitch). The answers to our questions were already in their pitches. Many times we had no questions because they’d already shared the information we needed to hear, in the pitch itself,” said Gupta. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="The funding winter investors" comment="subhead2" text="The funding winter investors">The funding winter investors</cmsannotation> Though detailed, the long-winded pitches often left judges Namita Thapar and Aman Gupta bored, who resorted to playing games like cross and knots and passing chits of paper to while away time — especially when the other panelists questioned the contestants. As the group shared on the podcast, Bansal had the most number of questions to ask, while Mittal had the most ‘gyan’ (wisdom or knowledge) to offer. Making a subtle comment on the ongoing funding winter, Bansal and Mittal even added that Shark Tank was the only place where investments were still taking place. “We’ve made so many investments in this (funding) winter. This is why people will see the show, I believe. Because no one’s investing in the market. So here, the element of hope is very high,” commented Bansal. As of Friday, January 6, 2023, 11 of the 15 pitches from the show have received funding from the sharks. Bansal said that people’s memory is extremely short-lived and if Twitter’s profitable after two years, Musk’s current shenanigans will easily be forgotten. Jain further added that considering Musk’s ‘credible success rate’, he’d definitely invest in Twitter under Musk. Mittal, though, shared that “given all the things going in the world, we need unifying voices. In Season 2 of Shark Tank India, the toxicity is out for good says Namita Thapar

The latest startup that pitched the show, ScrapUncle, also falls into this club. Started in 2019, ScrapUnce is a Delhi-based startup that positions itself as a modern-day ‘kabbadiwala’ (scrap dealer), which <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/company/scrapuncle/about/">aims to bring </a>“a systematic change in India's recyclable waste management problem”. ScrapUncle offers scrap recycling services via a website and an app. Customers can book trained and verified agents to collect scrap from their homes or offices. These agents accurately weigh the scrap and provide the best value for it, claimed the founder, Mukul Chhabra. The startup also promises <a href="https://scrapuncle.com/home">‘responsible recycling of scrap items’</a> on its website. “Customers and scrap dealers face problems because this sector is extremely unorganised and neglected. But when local sellers are online, then why not scrap dealers?” said Chhabra on the show. Chhabra also stated that in two years, ScrapUncle has completed over 22,000 pickups in the Delhi-NCR region, and sent 14 lakh kilograms of scrap for recycling. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Finding heaven in a junkyard" comment="subhead2" text="Finding heaven in a junkyard">Finding heaven in a junkyard</cmsannotation> A BTech graduate from Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology in Delhi, Chhabra always had an entrepreneurial bent of mind. Before starting ScrapUncle, he co-founded DroneMed in 2017. DroneMed was a startup in the field of unmanned aerial vehicles i.e. drones. It received various awards and recognitions from organizations like DST, Tata Trusts, Indian Air Force, etc. including a grant of ₹10 lakh but the startup had to be shut down. However, 25-year-old Chhabra was always interested in setting up ScrapUncle. “I was interested in robotics since childhood. My maternal uncle is a scrap dealer. I’d visit his junkyard and look for electronic equipment for my robots and projects. For me, it was heaven. That’s also how I got a fair idea about how the sector functioned,” shared Chhabra on the show. From visiting various junkyards to moving scrap dealers in his apartment to understand their challenges, Chhabra researched the industry in detail before launching the business. Normally, a scrap dealer earns ₹30,000-35,000 on a monthly basis, but ScrapUncle collection partners earn anywhere between ₹60,000-70,000, claimed Chhabra. The startup also received a grant of ₹23 lakh from Columbia University. The company, which was founded in 2019, started full-time operations in August 2020, and currently, has monthly sales worth ₹27.5 lakh. Chhabra claimed the business grew 4x during Covid — as more people went in for decluttering. It achieved yearly sales of ₹35 lakh in FY21 and ₹1.48 crore in FY22. Chhabra also projected sales worth ₹6 crore for FY23. After hearing Chhabra’s pitch and vision, sharks Namita Thapar, Anupam Mittal, and Aman Jain commended him for providing dignity to the profession, and for his knowledge of the sector. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Fighting for ‘scraps’ of equity" comment="subhead2" text="Fighting for ‘scraps’ of equity">Fighting for ‘scraps’ of equity</cmsannotation> The co-founder of boAt, Aman Gupta, was the first one to back out from investing because he believed the startup was at a stage where it needed a lot of work. Impressed by his passion and clarity, Sugar Cosmetics’ cofounder Vineeta Singh made the first offer — ₹30 lakh for 5% equity stake, and ₹30 lakh in debt at 12% interest rate, valuing the company at ₹6 crore. “I don’t know if every city will have a ScrapUncle like this or if you’ll single-handedly be able to make this a pan-India business. But I feel you’re passionate and possess clarity. I want to bet on that,” shared Singh. Namita Thapar, executive director at Emcure Pharmaceuticals, backed out because she didn’t believe she could add any value to the startup. CarDekho’s co-founder Amit Jain highlighted the emerging market for car scrapping and made an offer at the same valuation as Singh but without the element of debt — ₹60 lakh for a 10% equity stake. “This (car scrapping) is an important moment for our industry, where cars that are 10-15 years old will be scrapped… mandatorily, by law” added Jain. Shaadi.com’s founder Anupam Mittal countered with his own offer of ₹60 lakh for an 8% equity stake, raising the valuation to ₹7.5 crore. Jain instantly revised his original offer — the same investment for ₹7% equity stake, which prompted Mittal to offer a revised deal with a 6% equity stake. Before Chhabra could even respond to any of the offers, Jain made a final offer — ₹60 lakh for a 5% equity stake that valued the company at ₹12 crore. In less than a minute the valuation doubled from ₹6 crore to ₹12 crore. Mittal then rescinded his offer, stating that Chhabra took too long to respond. Ultimately, Chhabra agreed to Jain’s offer – of ₹60 lakh for 5% equity. And Kyari Innovations, the latest startup to appear on <keyword id="11924074" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shark-tank-india" source="Orion">Shark Tank India</keyword> S2, caters to this market by providing adventure safety gear. Founded in 2017 by sibling duo Smratika and Abhay Sharma, the Ghaziabad-based startup <a href="https://kyari.in/smart-stick-guardian/">manufactures and sells </a>Guardian - which is the world’s first smart walking stick, claimed the founders. Designed and made in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>, Guardian is a tech-enabled walking stick equipped with LED lights, a panic alarm, a power bank for portable charging, and an electrical probe (taser) with 10,000 volts of charge – enough to immobilise an attacker temporarily without causing serious injuries. It has a battery life of 720 hours. The smart walking stick is available in three versions, priced between ₹10,000-₹17,500. Along with the smart stick, Kyari provides accessories like a stand that can be remodelled to be used as an axe or shovel, and a wall mount and moto mount to mount the stick at home or on a motorcycle, respectively. Around 2,000 forest guards are already using the smart walking stick, claimed the founders. Kyari also manufactures ANIDERS (Animal Intrusion Detection and Repellent System) - a device that helps prevent crop raids and protect wildlife. ANIDERS has been installed in <a href="https://kyari.in/animal-intrusion-detection-repellent/#1466844053299-d3e3b352-f414">forest departments of over 20 Indian states</a>, as per the company. A basic model of ANIDERS is available for $233, or approximately, ₹18,900. As they shared on the show, growing up, their dinner conversations were dominated by discussions on animals and NatGeo. However, the idea of developing a smart stick struck Abhay after his own encounter with a tiger. “Like you sharks are sitting so close, I encountered a tiger at a similar distance and I was on foot. I was alone, and suddenly a tiger came from behind a boulder. I just froze. The tiger saw me and left but I remained frozen on the spot. That’s why I know, when you face a wild animal, you freeze - you can’t even scream,” shared Abhay on the show. Abhay Sharma, who’s a designer himself, graduated with a Bachelor’s of Technology degree in Mechanical Engineering from Amity University in 2019. He also <a href="http://www.nrdcindia.com/assets/vendor/filemanager/userfiles/Awards/Awardees_Feedback_NRDC_National_Meritorious_Invention_Awards-min.pdf">won </a>the prestigious National Budding Innovator Award in 2017 for developing ANIDERS. He’s responsible for designing the Guardian smart stick. On the other hand, Smratika graduated with a Bachelor’s of Technology degree in Computer Science from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University in 2015. She went on to work as a software engineer with Accenture for five years. She is <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/smratika/">responsible </a>for Kyari’s brand strategy. Kyari earned revenue of ₹8 lakh in its first year of operations, in FY19. Currently, it has a growth rate of 16.7%, registering sales of ₹30 lakh in FY 20, ₹1.2 crore in FY21, and ₹1.4 crore in FY22, as stated on the show. It also achieved year-to-date sales of ₹75 lakh in FY23. The founders also claimed that despite spending on research and development, and drawing salaries, they’ve consistently maintained a profit margin of 30% for three years and in fact, reinvested their savings to set up in-house manufacturing. “This is great. You have to do everything on your own in India, from beginning to end. Without vertical integration, you can’t deliver quality in India, unless you scale a lot,” remarked Shaadi.com founder Anupam Mittal, after hearing about the company’s setup. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Cut-throat negotiations" comment="subhead2" text="Cut-throat negotiations">Cut-throat negotiations</cmsannotation> Namita <keyword id="174" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="thapar" source="Orion">Thapar</keyword>, executive director at Emcure Pharmaceuticals and Amit Jain, the co-founder of CarDekho.com, were the first ones to make a joint offer of ₹51 lakh for a 10% stake, valuing the company at ₹5.1 crore. Simultaneously, Mittal, along with Lenskart co-founder Peyush Bansal, and boAt co-founder Aman Gupta, made a joint offer of ₹51 lakh for a 12% equity stake, valuing the company at ₹4.25 crore. “You (the founders) invest in R&amp;D and are innovative and long-term thinkers. So I have to be with you in this business,” said Bansal. However, the founders stated that they couldn’t go ahead with either of the valuations because the maximum equity they could offer was 2% for ₹51 lakh - valuing the company at a whopping ₹25.5 crore. While all the sharks responded that it was too high a valuation, Gupta walked out of the deal. The other four sharks, however, kept revising their offers. In a matter of minutes, the company’s valuation rose to ₹10 crore, with Bansal and Mittal offering ₹80 lakh for 8% equity, while Thapar and Jain offered ₹51 lakh for 6%- valuing the company at ₹8.5 crore. When the founders lowered their ask –for an investment of ₹51 lakh for a 5% equity stake– and tried to negotiate further, both Bansal and Mittal made it clear that there was no room to budge since any change in equity stake would lose them money. However, Bansal and Mittal agreed to match Thapar and Jain’s offer of ₹51 lakh for 6% equity. At the same time, Thapar commented to Jain that it was clear the founders wanted to go with sharks Bansal and Mittal, and thus didn’t revise their offer further. Finally, the founders agreed to a deal from Bansal and Mittal – ₹51 lakh investment for 6% equity, valuing the company at ₹8.5 crore. This startup that makes ‘smart’ stick for adventurers walks away with a sweet deal on Shark Tank India

<ul><li><keyword id="7363049" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="janitri" source="Orion">Janitri</keyword> provides ‘medical-grade fetal and maternal monitoring solutions’ to use at hospitals or homes. </li><li>The Bengaluru-based startup started selling its products in March 2021, after spending five years on development. </li><li>Arun Agarwal, the founder of Janitri, walked away with an investment of ₹1 crore for a 2.5% equity stake from <keyword id="544908" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Namita-Thapar" source="Orion">Namita Thapar</keyword>. </li></ul>Despite medical advancements, high infant and maternal mortality rates remain a prevalent concern in India. As of 2019, the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) in India <a href="https://pib.gov.in/PressReleaseIframePage.aspx?PRID=1796436">stood </a>at 30 per 1,000 live births. Lack of institutional births, low-birthweight babies and maternal mortality are other challenges that the country faces. The government introduced several schemes and frameworks like the Janani Suraksha Yojana in 2005; and a framework — Reproductive, Maternal, New-born, Child, and Adolescent Health (RMNCH+A) in 2013 to address these challenges. However, lack of access to primary healthcare centers and other issues affect women and child development in India. Janitri, the latest startup pitched on <keyword id="11924074" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shark-tank-india" source="Orion">Shark Tank India</keyword> S2, aims to tackle this problem with “medical-grade fetal and maternal monitoring solutions” via wearables, and affordable AI-enabled devices and software. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="A patch, a wearable and a software" comment="subhead2" text="A patch, a wearable and a software">A patch, a wearable and a software</cmsannotation> Founded by Arun Agarwal, Janitri is a Bengaluru-based startup that launched operations in March 2021. It offers three products — Keyar Patch, Daksh, and Navam wearable. Navam wearable can be worn on the wrist and helps in fetal monitoring, but it’s still a prototype. Made of silicone and plastic, Keyar Patch can be attached to the stomach of a pregnant woman and it monitors fetal heart rate, maternal heart rate, labour contractions and fetal movements. It’s available for ₹29,000. Keyar Patch connects to Daksh, which is a mobile application that can run on any Android-backed mobile or tablet. It helps monitor mothers during intrapartum and postpartum periods of labour by continuously sending relevant information to the doctors. It also generates critical alerts, notifies the staff, and is available for an annual subscription cost of ₹10,000. Together, Keyar Patch and Daksh allow doctors to remotely assess fetal movements to help both the mother and the child. Aggarwal claims that timely monitoring during the last trimester and labour can help save 80% of the women and/or newborns who succumb to complications during pregnancy. Most hospitals traditionally use a cardiotocography machine commonly known as a fetal monitor. However, it isn’t digital and produces graphs in thermal print that doctors study. It also requires the nurse to change the position of the probes on the mother’s belly every 30 minutes. These machines cost ₹1 lakh or more apiece, claimed Agarwal. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Bring a change at the grassroots level" comment="subhead2" text="Bring a change at the grassroots level">Bring a change at the grassroots level</cmsannotation> Originally hailing from Alwar, Rajasthan, Agarwal did his graduation (Bachelor's in Technology) in Electronics from Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), before pursuing a Master’s in biomedical engineering from VIT. His decision to pursue a degree in biomedical engineering stemmed from his desire to bring a change in the healthcare system in India. “I had a dream to solve the grassroot level problems in healthcare through technology. I heard my grandmother’s story of how, among the six siblings she had, one died within a year of being born. When I started my B.Tech I deduced, this a huge problem globally, and technology has not yet reached this area,” shared Agarwal. He worked as a patent analyst in the healthcare industry for two years to gain financial stability, and gained further insight into the industry by attending Healthcare Hackathons, visiting hospitals, and watching live deliveries, before starting Janitri. For five years, he worked on R&amp;D, clinical trials, and regulatory compliance for Janitri. During this time, the company received grants from Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), BIll &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation, the Government of Canada, and the Government of Karnataka. It also raised ₹2.35 crore in February 2020 in a seed round at a valuation of ₹15 crore from an angel investor. It raised an additional ₹1.15 crore via convertible notes in April 2021 from the same investor. As per Agarwal, Janitri has raised ₹7 crore so far in an equal mix of grants and equity. The startup has applied for 12 patents, four of which have already been granted. In its first year of operation, the company earned a revenue of ₹1.03 crore. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Offers galore, but conditions apply" comment="subhead2" text="Offers galore, but conditions apply">Offers galore, but conditions apply</cmsannotation> While all the sharks were impressed by the product, Namita Thapar, executive director at Emcure Pharmaceuticals, was the first to make an offer — ₹75 lakh for 5% equity, with ₹25 lakh debt. While she did match the past valuation of the startup, the founder remarked that the past valuation was an older, pre-money valuation. After which, Thapar doubled the valuation to ₹30 crore and made an offer of ₹60 lakh for 2% equity and ₹40 lakh debt. “In this country, if we wish to make healthcare effective, we can’t do it without the help of technology. The day pharma and technology join hands, we can create magic,” said Thapar. Lenskart co-founder Peyush Bansal and CarDekho co-founder Amit Jain made a joint offer of ₹1 crore for 2.5% equity, valuing the company at ₹40 crore. However, the offer was contingent on Janitri making sales worth ₹20 crore in the next year, failing which the sharks’ equity will double to 5%. Thapar matched this offer while adding that with her support, Janitri could easily achieve sales worth ₹50 crore. Ultimately, Aggarwal went with Thapar’s final offer of ₹1 crore for 2.5% equity, but on the condition that if the company does not achieve revenue of ₹20 crore in the next financial year, Thapar will get an additional 2.5% equity.
