<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Telenor+India+">Telenor India</a> has appointed Sharad Mehrotra as its new CEO. He will take up the post vacated by Vivek Sood who has been promoted as executive vice president and chief marketing officer in <keyword id="93456" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Telenor-group">Telenor Group</keyword>. 
 
Both appointments will be effective from November 1, 2015. 
 
Sharad has extensive knowledge about the Indian <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=telecom+company">telecom market</a>, and international experience from other Telenor operations, said Sigve Brekke, president and chief executive officer of Telenor Group, adding “I am confident that he will return to India with strong ambition to further develop the company as a profitable operator, and the preferred choice for the mass market." 
 
Mehrotra was part of India management of Uninorn from 2008 till 2013. He was head of Telenor Group's Asia distribution program driving regional synergies and scale. Later, he moved to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Myanmar+">Myanmar</a> to launch services in the country. As CEO of Telenor India, Sharad will also be a member of Telenor Group's executive management. 
 
The company has launched free insurance for every Telenor India customer last week. 
 
Commenting about his appointment, Mehrotra said: "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=competitive+mobile+markets+">India is one of the most competitive mobile markets in the world</a>, and Telenor India has rapidly grown into a top position in the areas where we operate. In his new role at Telenor Group, Sood will be responsible for strengthening Telenor Group's focus and ability to improve customer journeys, ensure continued innovation, and create value from digital data growth. 
 Earlier, Sood was chief executive officer of <keyword id="241876" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Grameenphone">Grameenphone</keyword>, the largest mobile operator in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Bangladesh">Bangladesh</a>. Under him, Grameenphone crossed the 50 million customer milestone and became first country within the Telenor Group to do so, the group said in a statement.

Meet Sharad Mehrotra, Telenor India’s new CEO

<keyword id="1523889" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sharad-Mehrotra">Sharad Mehrotra</keyword> was iPhone maker <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Apple&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Apple</a>'s enterprise mobility head in India. He’s quit his ‘cushy job’, and will launch a smartphone company in the world's fastest-growing smartphone market on June 15. 
 
Mehrotra has been with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Apple&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Apple India</a> since October 2007, and only recently co-founded Hyve Mobility with Aditya Agarwal, who heads Euphoria and 4 Genius Minds. The company is targeting the Rs 15,000-20,000 segment with a flagship model. 
 
With close to 18 years of experience across the business development, marketing and retail from the likes of Apple and India's top telco <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Bharti+Airtel&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Bharti Airtel</a>, Mehrotra is looking to bring back ‘basic hygiene’ into the Indian smartphone market. 
 
Why get into the smartphone business? 
It’s a crowded market, yes, but the smartphone penetration in India is still not great. It’s growing double digits quarter-on-quarter, so there’s a huge opportunity. There are gaps in the product portfolio unfortunately, service being one that we’d like to address. 
 
Most smartphone manufacturers are doing a lot of advertising, however not many are focusing on the convenience of the customer or what features or tech is really needed for customer delight. 
 
With the value proposition on offer, we’ll have our own niche. 
 
Is it feasible to offer extensive after-sales support to budget smartphones? 
It’s not a question of whether they want it, but whether they deserve it. Anybody paying the money deserves convenience and delight. That’s basic hygiene. 
 
Are you making money off hardware? 
We’re not in the business of losing money. 
 However, while several <keyword id="3400407" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="phone-manufacturing">phone manufacturing</keyword> companies and third-party players make money off <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=bloatware&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">bloatware</a> and skinning, we won’t do that in the lieu of sacrificing delight. Ours is a stock <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Android&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Android</a>. 
 
Manufacturing plans. 
Design and R&amp;D is in-house. We’ve patented the technologies. We have carefully chosen the brand of component. The assembly happens in China, but in a very controlled manner. There is no ‘thappa’ business here.

Ex-Paytm employees join crypto-focused Transak as it doubles down on its India expansion plans

Telecom operator <keyword id="6359476" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Telenor">Telenor</keyword>'s survey on the '<keyword id="3142686" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Worst-internet-habits">Worst Internet Habits</keyword>' reveals that India's <keyword id="6357247" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Internet">internet</keyword> users have found 'spreading false rumors' as the most annoying Internet habit. 

	"Spreading rumors with 40% of the votes was found to be the worst internet habit in India followed by inviting people to play online, which received 34% votes and sharing inappropriate content came third with 30% votes," Telenor said in a statement on Thursday. 
 The survey also found that uniquely 33% of Indians also hate excessive <keyword id="1725157" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Selfie">selfie</keyword> takers, against the regional average of 21%. And 65% of Indians surveyed admit to being 'Internet addicts' - just under the regional average of 67% addiction level. 

	"It is great to see that 94% of the Indians surveyed say that Internet has improved their lives - the highest percentage among the surveyed nations," Sharad Mehrotra, CEO, Telenor India, said in the statement. 
 

	According to a release, Telenor conducted the survey to learn more about their customers across India, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia.

Spreading false rumors is the worst Internet habit among Indian netizens: Survey

The results of a Telenor Group survey done on internet scams suggest that work-from-home fraud, lottery scams and fake bank emails are the top three <keyword id="112985" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="online-scams">online scams</keyword> in India. 
 
As per the study, in a country like India where over one third of internet users surveyed have been victims to an internet scam, online security is extremely relevant. The survey also found that a further 57% of the users know a friend or family member who had been scammed online. Amongst those who were surveyed were people who have been victims of <keyword id="1368257" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="online-frauds">online frauds</keyword>, and 90% if them have lost money because of it. 
 
The global survey was done over multiple markets like India, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia, and assessed the impact of scams on 400 internet users aged 18 to 65. 
 
“As a leader in telecommunications, Telenor India is dedicated to enhancing internet safety," said Sharad Mehrotra, CEO, Telenor India told ET. "We hope that the findings from this digital consumer study will encourage all of us to take preventative measures to stay safe online." 
 
"As Indian netizens, we all know that scams exist but to see that the highest sums stolen via scams is in India, shows this is an area we communally need to address," the company added. 
 
The Telenor study also revealed that around 85% of India's internet users know that there exists a term called 'Internet Scam', and also that they feel open to online threats. 63% of these users said they are 'very concerned' about online scams.

Work-from-home, lottery, and fake bank emails top online scams in Telenor survey

India <keyword id="624" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Women">women</keyword> have come a long way in terms of establishing themselves as leaders, decision makers, bread earners, company representatives and entrepreneurs. These leaders are encouraging women to have a transformed lifestyle. We’re seeing women rising the ranks in business, technology and government from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific. There’s been no better time to be a woman in India than right now. By and large, women are safer, more prosperous and have more opportunities than they ever had before. 
 
Recently when the world was showering praises on ISRO’s feat of launching 104 satellites, the untold story of the “Rocket Women” of India was also unfolding simultaneously. These brilliant women scientists have taken the Indian space programme to new heights. And they are not the only ones who have broken the glass ceiling to reach for the skies, literally, but every sector is witnessing an increasing presence of women in the boardroom. A case in point will be the banks or the technology companies where women now dominate the top roles. 
 
Women have never had it so good 
Long gone are the excusable days that women are not part of the corporate composition. According to the World Economic Forum, more than a quarter of a billion women have entered the labor force in the past 10 years, up from 1.5 billion to 1.75 billion worldwide. 
 Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5 of the <keyword id="6355833" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="united-nations">United Nations</keyword> 2030 global agenda specifically sets out to achieve gender equality and female empowerment. And according to ADB, a tenant to the achievement of SDG 5 is the use of Information and Communications Technology. SDG 10 – Reducing Inequalities connects in equal measure to the active inclusion of women and girls in educational, social and economic spheres. It’s an inclusion that ICT effectively drives. 
 
Women have come a long way, still a long walk 
Despite accomplishments of women leaders from Asia, there are many hurdles to be crossed. For example, India has among the worst levels of gender wage disparity — men earning more than women in similar jobs — with the gap exceeding 30 per cent, according to the Global Wage Report 2016-17 released by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in December 2016. 
 Further at a regional level, Asia loses between US$16 billion to US$30 billion annually as a result of gender gaps in education and then employment. According to the <keyword id="240184" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="International-Labour-Organization">International Labour Organization</keyword> (ILO) and ADB, the region reportedly loses between US$42 billion to US$47 billion annually due to women’s limited access to employment opportunities. 
 
Clearly, if more women were active participants in the economy, we all benefit. Eliminating gender disparity in the region would increase per capita income for all by 70% in roughly 60 years and that’s something everyone should be able to get behind. 
 
Women need to feel empowered and supported by their companies in order to put themselves forward for senior positions. Without this commitment and backing from the business community, the current imbalanced situation which the corporate sector is facing won’t change. According to the TimesJobs Job Outlook Survey 2016–17, an increased number of corporates in India will have a larger focus on gender diversity in 2017. Nearly 70 percent of organizations said they would be hiring more women in 2017 and 20 percent said that they would hire women professionals for CXO roles in the years to come. 
 
Technology to empower <keyword id="42463" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Women">Indian women</keyword> A 2016 report done by <keyword id="50041" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="KPMG">KPMG</keyword> found that communications technology, including mobile phones, promotes entrepreneurial activity of women, improving business practices overcoming gender barriers. This is corroborated by two thirds of working women who reported that having a mobile means they have, or would have, greater access to business and employment opportunities (GSMA). 
 
Over 110 million Indian women are active users of internet and it is growing at a rate of 46% every year, according to a report by Internet and Mobile Association of India and IMRB International. The internet’s ability to enable access and reduce cost barriers for such young female pioneers is essential in a world where remuneration inequalities still exist. With the right knowledge, a world of opportunity is at their fingertips—a world of female-empowered initiatives and gender neutral marketplaces—where outputs are judged solely on quality and void of predisposed discrimination. 
 
The steepest, but surest climb is in India 
The issue of women empowerment has never been more relevant in India. As one of the world’s fastest growing economies, in India, the creation and growth of digital economies and women empowerment should go hand-in-hand. 
 
Telecom companies should provide the power of digital communication, enabling its female customers to improve their lives, build societies and secure a better future for all. Empowering women in societies and creating a positive local impact should be at the core of all actions. 
 
Digital innovation has the ability to bring more women and disenfranchised into the fold. It gives an opportunity to promote inclusive growth and rewrite society’s gender code now. The rise of female inclusion through digital innovation around the world will provide more gender neutral opportunities and mute, if not completely extinguish the age-old – and frankly no longer acceptable – narratives of “before”.

The young population of a country is the custodian of its future as much as it is the harbinger of change. They are innovators, they are restless and they are in a hurry to taste success. When many countries struggle with increasingly aging populations, India is blessed to have a high percentage of young. As per the 2011 census almost 41% of Indians are below the age of 20 years. If they are provided with proper education and employment skills, the International Monetary Fund estimates that they have the potential to add 2 percentage points to the annual economic growth of India till 2031. This is the demographic dividend that could make the country an economic superpower in the coming years. 
 
The young innovators of today are curators and custodians of a digitally empowered society and are steering technology on the right path to achieve the deliberated goal of a digital future for India. The youth bring enormous energy, superhuman effort and a fresh perspective to the table. These qualities play an immense role if a change has to be brought about in any society or nation. Mentoring and nurturing this young talent will help the nation address the myriad problems that it is facing today.

In several parts of Asia-Pacific and now India, forums are being provided so that youth can exchange experiences and ideas to enhance their participation in the process of social and economic advancement, especially around issues important to them, including health, education, employment and corruption. Overall, the challenge in this region lies in opening up new spaces and establishing innovative mechanisms for constructive engagement of youth in different fields or sectors. 
 
As a responsible telecom operator, we have also launched initiatives to connect our brightest and tech-savvy youth to address challenges facing the society. We run Telenor Youth forum in collaboration with Nobel Peace Center, through which our endeavor is not just to bring together young leaders to collaborate around social challenges but also to foster understanding, prosperity and ultimately peace in the societies we operate in. 
 
India’s young are gradually bringing about changes in society that they live in and are ready to experiment with new things and put their dreams to reality. Right from mobilising communities to addressing issues plaguing our society to creating solutions/applications that can benefit the society, young Indians are transcending all imaginations in innovating for society. When it comes to technology innovation, there have been several success stories. A case in point is Ajit Narayanan, age 29, who was trained at the incubation centre of IIT Madras. Through his innovation Avaz -- an affordable, tablet-based communication device for the speech-impaired -- he has given voice to many. 
 
Another social entrepreneur, Akanksha Hazari founded <a href="http://yourstory.com/2012/07/mpaani-designs-loyalty-program-for-the-underserved/" target="_blank">m.PAANI</a> that uses mobile phones to provide basic services, like safe water, education, healthcare, energy, and nutrition to underserved communities. The users are awarded loyalty points based on their day-to-day expenditure on products which can be redeemed later and can be shared with family members as well. 
 There are several such examples in India and the number is growing, with impetus from different enterprises as well as the government. These instances will not only foster a culture of innovation and free thinking but also will create resurgence in the fraternity to take up more such initiatives in health, safety, unemployment, e-commerce and other pressing social and economic issues. Indian government’s Digital India vision and Start-up India initiative have given a fillip to several <keyword id="80822" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="young-minds">young minds</keyword> to think beyond traditional career choices. The country’s youth today feels that he or she can bring about change in society and is working towards that. 
 
While today young entrepreneurs are actually coming to the forefront and contributing to the changing society, what is required is that this movement reaches beyond metropolitan cities. There is immense talent in small cities of the country which are often ignored as the students of metro cities take all the limelight. While initiatives like Start-up India are boosting the entrepreneurial ecosystem of India, the movement will gather its actual momentum only when it reaches the nooks and corners of the nation. This will not only spur the young entrepreneurial spirit of the nation but will also actually address grass root issues.
