Gogoi was the 46th Chief Justice of India who took charge on October 3, 2018. Born in Nagpur on April 24, 1956, Bobde completed his graduation and obtained a law degree from Nagpur University. He was enrolled on the roll of the Bar Council of Maharashtra in 1978 and was designated as Senior Advocate in 1998. His career as judge began on March 29, 2000 when he was appointed as Additional Judge in the Bombay High Court, and he rose to become Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court on October 16, 2012. He was elevated as a Judge of the Supreme Court on April 12, 2013. Justice Bobde was part of the five-judge constitution bench hearing the longest running Ayodhya land dispute case. <ul><li>The <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword> stayed a National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (<keyword id="6396355" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="nclat">NCLAT</keyword>) order that made way for a probe against the e-commerce giant for alleged abuse of dominant position. </li><li>The Chief Justice of India Sharad Arvind Bobde-led bench has sought a reply from the Competition Commission of India (CCI).</li><li>The NCLAT order from March had allowed the CCI to launch a probe against the e-commerce giant.</li></ul>Some relief came in for Indian e-commerce giant <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> as the Supreme Court stayed a National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) order that made way for a probe against the e-commerce giant for alleged abuse of dominant position. According to Bar &amp; Bench, the Chief Justice of India Sharad Arvind Bobde-led bench has sought a reply from the Competition Commission of India (CCI). During the court <a href="https://www.devdiscourse.com/article/technology/1358278-sc-stays-nclat-order-for-cci-probe-against-flipkart">proceedings</a> on December 2, 2020, Senior Advocate Harish Salve representing Flipkart said that Amazon being a competitor, is not a dominant player, which means that predatory pricing doesn’t apply to Flipkart as well. He said, “predatory pricing is an issue to be considered against the dominant player as a case of abuse of power but his client has not been held as a dominant player.” Salve added that the “CCI didn’t look at the findings of the Government and instead relied on the tax department findings, thus misread the findings of the tax tribunal.” The NCLAT order from March had allowed the CCI to launch a probe against the e-commerce giant. The order was based on the allegations made by All India Online Vendors’ Association (AIOVA). The Indian e-commerce giant has often come under scrutiny, along with its US-based rival Amazon, for predatory pricing, deep discounts and more, from India’s various trade associations. An e-commerce policy from the Indian government is still in the works to regulate India’s booming e-commerce sector. The case so far: Flipkart vs AIOVA The AIOVA had moved the CCI in March 2018 and stated that “that small vendors have become allies of the big vendors and suppliers to leading sellers such as Cloudtail, WS Retail etc. on the Flipkart and Amazon platforms, rather than selling directly to consumers through the online e-commerce marketplace sites.” CCI had then absolved Flipkart of any such allegations. “...looking at the present market construct and structure of online marketplace platforms market in India, it does not appear that any one player in the market is commanding any dominant position at this stage of evolution of the market,” the order had said then. Following the plea to CCI, the AIOVA had moved the NCLAT in January 2019.

<ul><li>The national capital of India may be facing a <keyword id="6355017" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="water-shortage">water shortage</keyword> over the next three days.</li><li>The water shortage will not only impact the general population, but also hospitals, which are currently reeling from the surge in COVID-19 patients.</li><li>According to the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), Haryana is to blame for reducing the supply of water by 20% to 30% as well as making the water dirtier.</li><li>The DJB has filed a petition with the Supreme Court to address the issue. The court will hear the cases tomorrow on May 6.</li></ul>India’s national capital, New Delhi, has been under lockdown for nearly three weeks now, due to the surging number of COVID-19 cases. And a water shortage will only make things worse. The city is already facing a number of shortages as it is, from vaccines to oxygen to medical supplies. The administration in Delhi saw this coming, more than a month ago. The vice chairman of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), Raghav Chaddha, claims he has even written multiple letters to the Haryana Chief Minister to address the issue, but no resolution has been offered. With no other option on the table, the DJB finally moved the Supreme Court to help the national capital in its moment of crisis. It told the apex court that there is a critical shortage in water being supplied from the neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana. As of April, that flow was down to around which means only around 200 million gallons of water is coming in. As a result there was a shortage of water at the Sonia Vihar and Bhagirathi water treatment plants. To make matters worse, the water is dirtier than it used to be. The high ammonia concentration in the Yamuna has affected the productivity of the water treatment plants in Chandrawal and Wazirabad. These two plants are responsible for churning out an average of 228 million gallons of water a day for the people of Delhi. As per the latest estimates, levels at the Wazirabad water treatment plant have fallen by over 1% from the standard level of 674.5 feet to 667.2 feet of water. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Delhi saw the water shortage coming" comment="subhead" text="Delhi saw the water shortage coming">Delhi saw the water shortage coming</cmsannotation> This is not the first time that the DJB has had to go to the Supreme Court. On March 23, the DJB told the bench headed by CJI Sharad Arvind Bobde that Haryana has plans to cut 20% of its water to Delhi to repair work in one of its canals. Senior advocate AM Singhvi and advocate Gautam Narayan, appearing for the DJB, urged the court to order Haryana to postpone the work. They argued that a reduction in water supply during the peak summer months would adversely affect the national capital. At the time, the Supreme Court had ordered Haryana, as well as Punjab and the Bhakra Beas Management Board, to not make any changes to the supply of water to Delhi until April 6. The court then extended the water supply order to April 14. The following week, on April 19, the Supreme Court appointed a committee to conduct a local inspection with regard to the quality and quantity of water coming in from Haryana to Delhi. Disputes of water between Delhi and Haryana are not new. They happen every summer when the supply of water is limited and the national capital is dependent on its neighbour to ensure adequate supply. Water shortage might be on the way to worsen Delhi's COVID-19 crisis

<ul><li>The Supreme Court has allowed the Rath Yatra to take place only in Puri and with strict guidelines and the responsibility of the state government. </li><li>For the first time in 285 years, it was feared that the Rath Yatra would be cancelled. </li><li>This year’s Rath Yatra (June 23) was put on hold by the Supreme Court due to the rising number of coronavirus cases in Odisha and the country.</li></ul>Puri Rath Yatra, a 12th century tradition which sees the grand chariots of Lords Balabhadra, Jagannath and Subhadra taken out a procession in the city, will continue this year but with strict guidelines. The top court said that the Puri rath yatra will be held with coordination of temple committee, state and central government without compromising with health issue. “But we will not do any micro management of Rath Yatra. We will leave it to the best wisdom of the responsible state government. The State Government will act responsibly and contain the spread,” said India’s top court. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta appeared on the Centre’s behalf while senior advocate Harish Salve appeared on behalf of the government of Odisha in the Supreme Court today. “A ritual going on for centuries should not be interfered with,” said <a href="https://twitter.com/barandbench/status/1274942314939637767">Mehta.</a> This was the first time in 285 years that it was feared that the Rath Yatra would be cancelled. For the pious event, lakhs of devotees from across the country gather just to catch a glimpse of Lord Jagannath and help pull the chariot. According to the tradition, if Rath Yatra is not held in a year, it cannot be held for the next 12 years. This year’s Rath Yatra (June 23) was put on hold by the Supreme Court due to the rising number of coronavirus cases in Odisha and the country. Odisha currently has over 5000 coronavirus cases. Chief Justice of India Sharad Arvind Bobde had said, “Lord Jagannath won't forgive us if we allow it”. Earlier, an organisation based out of Odisha had moved the Supreme Court to put a stay on the Rath Yatra as ‘it could be catastrophic’. In 2019, ten lakh people had taken part in the festival. However, this was met by dissent from across the country, and soon petitions were filed to let the festival take place. Janardhan Pattajoshi Mohapatra, the chief servitor of Lord Jagannatha, had requested the Supreme Court to hold the festival without the crowds as it is an ‘unbroken tradition’. “Any interruption in the observance of this mandatory religious practice affects the very sanctity of the temple and all its future rituals as well as the faith of millions of devotees across the world who understand and revere the significance of the Rath Yatra,” <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/amid-covid-19-pandemic-chief-servitor-of-lord-jagannatha-asks-sc-to-allow-puri-ratha-yatra-without-public-participation/story-bJvBzCkYWqLuub2oHZ3IWJ.html">the application stated.</a> The application had also called for a complete curfew in Puri on June 23 to ensure that crowds don’t gather on the streets and said that if held without the lakhs of devotees, the procession would be completed in less than an hour. Puri Jagannath Rath Yatra will be held this year despite coronavirus, but without the lakhs of devotees

<ul><li>Give Muslims another site for a mosque, the Supreme Court ordered quashing the division of land by the Allahabad High Court.</li><li>This is a historic judgement from the Supreme Court in the Ram Mandir (temple) - Babri Masjid (mosque) title dispute being fought in courts at least since 1885.</li><li>The central government has been vested with the disputed land and to come up with a scheme for the construction of a temple in Ayodhya.</li><li>The Muslims should be given a separate 5-acre site for the construction of a mosque, the SC ordered while calling the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1992 as against the law.</li></ul>In a historic verdict, the Supreme Court of India has ordered that Muslims be given a separate 5-acre site to build a mosque, while holding the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1992 as against the law.  These are the key highlights of the order being read out: 1. Hindus get the possession of the disputed site in Ayodhya for a Ram temple. Possession of disputed 2.77 acre land will remain with Central government receiver. SC asks centre to frame scheme within 3 months and set up a trust for construction of a temple. 2. Alternate land should be allotted to the Muslims for a mosque. The Allahabad High Court was wrong in dividing the disputed Ayodhya site into three parts. 3. The government has to set up a trust that will enforce the Court's judgement. 4. Ram Janmabhoomi (birthplace of Lord Rama) is not a juristic person and therefore filed by Nirmohi Akhara is barred by limitation. However, the Akhara that has sought the management rights to the temple may get adequate representation going forward, if the government deems fit. 5. The report from the Archeological Survey of India (ASI), which cited the presence of a tenth-century structure beneath the Babri Masjid, has been upheld. But the court highlighted the fact that ASI refrained from recording a finding on whether mosque was built after demolishing a Hindu temple. As it stood at the Supreme Court, there are 50 parties in the case but the broad issue is whether there should be a temple or a mosque in the disputed site or should the land be divided among the sparring parties as ruled by the Allahabad High Court in 2010. Today, the Supreme Court has quashed the Allahabad High Court verdict, which divided the Ayodhya title into three equal parts between the Nirmohi Akhara, Lord Ram-- the deity represented by Triloki Nath Pandey (an RSS volunteer and Vishva Hindu Parishad functionary)-- and the Sunni Waqf Board. All three parties moved the Supreme Court against the order. Reaction of the Muslim side The Muslim side has expressed its displeasure with the Supreme Court verdict. While they agree with the parts of the verdict, they disagree with the handing over of the disputed site to the Hindus. Zafaryab Jilani, a litigant from the Muslim side, representing the Sunni Waqf Board, said that the verdict is "neither justice nor equity". "We are not satisfied with the judgement and the court has reached some wrong conclusions. We will go through the judgement to decide the future course of action... but SC verdict has to be respected. Everyone must remain calm," Jilani said adding that they are yet to decide whether they will move a review petition.
