Indian <keyword id="6354814" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="prime-minister-Narendra-Modi">Prime Minister Narendra Modi</keyword> met his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif in Ufa, on the sidelines of the <keyword id="157954" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shanghai-Cooperation-Organisation">Shanghai Cooperation Organisation</keyword> (SCO) Summit. 
The two premiers shook hands before sitting down for delegation-level talks. 
 
Reportedly, Indian delegation included National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar while Sartaj Aziz, Sharif's advisor on foreign affairs and national security, was in the Pakistani delegation. 
 
The previous night, Modi and Sharif had exchanged pleasantries and chatted briefly at the dinner hosted by Russian President Vladimir Putin for leaders of five BRICS nations and 10 SCO nations in Ufa. 
 
It is expected that Modi and Sharif will discuss the status of the bilateral ties and the future direction. 
 
However, Indian government sources told Economic Times that Modi-Sharif talks need not be construed a prelude to a resumption of the dialogue process between the two countries. 
 
Pakistan foreign office spokesperson Qazi Khalilullah said that it has always been (Pakistan) Prime Minister's policy to seek cordial and cooperative ties with all neighbouring countries including India. “It was in the pursuit of this objective that the prime minister would be meeting the Indian prime minister for a comprehensive exchange on all issues of common interest,” he had said. 
 
Meanwhile, sources indicated ET that Modi will strongly raise India's concerns on militancy with Pakistan and that all outstanding issues including inaction against Hafiz Saeed and 26/11 mastermind Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi. 
 
Modi and Sharif had met in Kathmandu last year for the SAARC Summit but they did not have a bilateral meeting over acrimony between the two countries at that time.

Provoking India, Pakistan said: "The people of J&amp;K have been denied their right to self-determination, subjected to consistent and forceful foreign occupation and their democratic rights have been usurped and suppressed by conduction of sham elections at gun-point." 
 
It also added, “The denial of the right to self-determination was not only the negation of the UN Charter and key human rights covenants but also of human dignity.”

Come July, Modi would be visiting five Central Asian countries with an intent to tap huge natural resources including hydrocarbon and uranium. As per a news report in The Economic Times, Modi plans to spend a day each in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and <keyword id="169344" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tajikistan">Tajikistan</keyword>, diplomatic sources told the financial daily. The trip is being clubbed with Modi's maiden visit to <keyword id="6358826" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Russia">Russia</keyword> for the Brics summit in <keyword id="271311" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ufa">Ufa</keyword> on July 8 and 9, sources hinted. Modi is also expected to attend the <keyword id="157954" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shanghai-Cooperation-Organisation">Shanghai Cooperation Organisation</keyword> summit in the same city on July 9 and 10.

Defence Minister <keyword id="6355121" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rajnath-Singh">Rajnath Singh</keyword> on Wednesday arrived here on a three-day visit to Russia to attend a crucial meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and hold talks with his Russian counterpart Sergey Shoigu on further boosting bilateral defence cooperation. The defence ministers of all eight SCO member nations are expected to deliberate on regional security challenges like terrorism and extremism and ways to deal with them collectively here on Friday, officials said. "Raksha Mantri Shri @rajnathsingh reached Moscow on a three day visit to Russia. He was received by Major General Bukhteev Yury Nikolaevich at the airport," the Indian embassy tweeted. The meeting is taking place under the shadow of a fierce border row between India and China, both members of the influential bloc. "Reached Moscow this evening. Looking forward to my bilateral meeting with the Russian Counterpart General Sergey Shoygu tomorrow," Defence Minister Singh tweeted. The SCO comprises eight member states -- India, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Chinese Defence Minister Gen Wei Fenghe and Pakistan's Pervez Khattak are expected to attend the SCO meeting. Asked about the possibility of a bilateral meeting between Singh and Wei on the sidelines of the SCO event, officials said there is no such plan. Before departure, Singh in a tweet said that issues of mutual interest will figure in his talks with Shoigu. "India and Russia are privileged Strategic Partners. Looking forward to further this partnership during my visit," he said. In his meeting with Shoigu, Singh will press for expediting supply of a number of weapons systems, ammunition and spares to India by Russia under contracts which were concluded earlier, officials said. In the talks, both sides are expected to officially finalise a long-pending proposal to produce AK 203 rifles in India. The officials said Singh is also likely to request the Russian side to ensure the timely delivery of the S-400 missile defence systems to India. The delivery of the first batch of S-400 surface-to-air missile systems to India is scheduled by the end of 2021. It is Singh's second visit to Moscow since June. He had represented India at the Victory Day Parade in Moscow on June 24 that commemorated the 75th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in the Second World War. The SCO, seen as a counterweight to NATO, has emerged as one of the largest transregional international organisations which accounts for almost 44 per cent of the world population stretching from the Arctic Ocean to the Indian Ocean and from the Pacific Ocean to the Baltic Sea. The aim of the SCO is to maintain peace, stability and security of the region. India became a member of the SCO in 2017. "The two leaders agreed to make concerted efforts towards further strengthening the Special &amp; Privileged Strategic Partnership between the two countries in the years to come. They also reviewed progress in various issues of bilateral cooperation, and exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest," an official release said. "While discussing the Russia-Ukraine conflict, PM reiterated India's consistent position in favour of dialogue and diplomacy as the way forward. The two leaders agreed to remain in touch," it added. Meanwhile, Kremlin also shared details of President <keyword id="19911498" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="putin" source="keywords">Putin</keyword>'s conversation with <keyword id="19899320" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pm-modi" source="keywords">PM Modi</keyword> and said that the former informed the latter about the ongoing situation in the war-torn region of Ukraine. Other studies have found that the temporary disappearance of shipping traffic during COVID-19 lockdowns brought a <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/health-coronavirus-hongkong-dolphins-idINKBN2650B0">resurgence</a> in endangered pink dolphins near Hong Kong and, after 9/11, reduced <a href="https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rspb.2011.2429">stress</a> among North Atlantic right whales.Much of this underwater noise comes from ships' propellers. New loop-based models are designed to not only reduce noise pollution and help protect marine life but also increase energy efficiency — a win-win-win for the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/record-ocean-temperatures-california-heat-atmospheric-river-storms-santa-cruz-2023-1">oceans</a>, the climate, and the shipping industry.<h2>Propellers that close the loop cut out some of the noise</h2><div type="image" title="traditional propeller three white blades on a motor sitting on a table juxtaposed with the same setup with a propeller made of three overlapping loops" height="444" width="1191" msid="99622440" hostid="261"></div>When a blade propeller spins in the air (like the one on the left in the above image), it generates regions of high and low pressure that meet at the blade's tip to create a vortex.It's these so-called tip vortices that make a lot of noise, both in the air and underwater.When you replace the blade with a loop, there's no tip. The high- and low-pressure regions meet along the edge of the loop, distributing the vortices more widely so that they dissipate faster and therefore more quietly.That's what Sebastian realized when he put loop propellers on a drone.Hear how much of a difference it makes:"I think this gives people another dimension to explore in propeller design," Sebastian said.<h2>Bringing the closed loop to water</h2>Greg Sharrow was trying to make quieter drones to film live classical music when he realized that his loopy design, which aimed to limit tip vortices, had an advantage in the water too.<div type="image" title="four shiny steel propellers with loops for blades lined up on a wood table with words painted on it: &quot;sharrow marine the future of propulsion&quot;" height="1499" width="1999" msid="99622442" hostid="261"></div>As a boat propeller spins, it creates similar high- and low-pressure regions in water as a drone propeller does in air. These pressure changes create cavities of air that form bubbles.This process, called cavitation, is very loud — Kathy Metcalf, the president and CEO of the trade association Chamber of Shipping of America, said it accounts for most of a boat propeller's noise.Sharrow said his loop-based boat propellers are about 20 decibels softer than traditional propellers because both tip vortices and cavitation are "eliminated or significantly reduced."But to determine the noise reduction for ocean life, Halpern said that it's crucial to measure the frequencies, in hertz, of the propeller noise. Marine animals can hear a much wider range of frequencies than humans can.Sharrow began selling propellers to recreational boaters in 2020 through a company he founded called Sharrow Marine.Sharrow plans to run third-party tests to better assess the extent of his propellers' underwater noise reduction. He said he aims to publish the results in the next year.<h2>Loops could be more energy efficient, too</h2>Metcalf described cavitation as lost energy.Testing led by the company <a href="https://boattest.com/Sharrow-Propeller" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BoatTEST</a> found that the Sharrow Propeller was up to 30% more efficient than a standard blade propeller.Efficiency doesn't just save money — it can also help ships use less fuel and emit less heat-trapping gasses into the atmosphere.<div type="image" title="black oil covers a bean where a worker in white pants covered in oil walks with a shovel and bucket with a large ship in the distant water" height="1499" width="1999" msid="99622443" hostid="261"></div>The <a href="https://www.oecd.org/ocean/topics/ocean-shipping/">Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development has said</a> that about 90% of traded goods are transported by ocean shipping, which represents 2.9% of global greenhouse-gas emissions.Sharrow hopes to expand into the shipping industry as his company scales up manufacturing."We have been actively designing propellers of 10 meters in diameter for many years and working collaboratively with shipping-container companies around the world to apply the technology for container ships," Sharrow said.He said that Sharrow Marine produces up to 1,300 propellers a month at its facilities in Detroit and that the company had months' worth of back orders to catch up on through a supply collaboration with Yamaha. His plan is to scale up to make hundreds of thousands of propellers each year.<h2>The future of shipping could be much cleaner and quieter</h2>Though loop propellers aren't widely used for commercial shipping vessels — the main culprits of underwater noise from propellers — they could one day replace those ships' noisy screw propellers or traditional blade propellers.<div type="image" title="container ship labeled Evergreen across the side stacked high with green red and blue boxes in the open ocean with a coast in the distance" height="1499" width="1999" msid="99622444" hostid="261"></div>Quieter propellers are just one part of an impending reckoning for the shipping industry.To reduce emissions, cargo ships have to switch to low-emission fuel sources like <a href="https://qz.com/2111985/maersk-cant-find-enough-green-fuel-for-its-carbon-neutral-ships" target="_blank" rel="noopener">green methanol</a>. That would involve redesigning new ships, retrofitting old ones, and building the coastal infrastructure to refuel them.Nobody's requiring shipping companies to do that, so they aren't rushing to do it. But Metcalf said there's "a very quiet push" to turn sustainability guidelines from the UN's International Maritime Organization into a mandatory code or market instrument to kick-start the fuel transition.Reducing underwater noise could go hand in hand with that transformation."There's a synergy there," Metcalf said. "You can improve your energy efficiency and reduce your underwater noise with the same kind of things."Strategies with such synergy include reshaping bows and hulls, maintaining a clean hull and undamaged propellers, and adding extra structures to decrease cavitation around the propeller. Some of those options are operational, and some involve retrofitting the ship. Wang's remarks at a virtual conference of the foreign ministers of Russia, India and China (RIC) trilateral came amidst a violent clash between the militaries of India and China that led to the killing of 20 Indian soldiers in the Galwan Valley on June 15. In his address to RIC Foreign Ministers, Wang said the three countries should "correctly handle and properly deal with sensitive factors in bilateral relations and safeguard the overall interests of mutual relation," without directly referring to the current round of India-China military tensions along the Line of Actual Control, (LAC). External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov were also present in the meeting. He backed Russia's proposal to hold the first RIC defence ministers meeting to enhance the level of defence and security cooperation. Wang emphasised that China, Russia, and India are big countries that insist on strategic autonomy, a press release issued by the Chinese Foreign Ministry said. He said the three nations should grasp the opportunity to enhance overall cooperation. "Starting from the common interests of promoting the development of the three countries and safeguarding the world's peaceful development, we should correctly treat and properly handle the sensitive factors in bilateral relations and maintain the overall situation of mutual relations," he said. "We should make good use of the overall momentum of cooperation in which the three countries are partners and opportunities for each other proceed from the common interests of promoting the development and revitalisation of the three countries and safeguarding the world peace and development," he said. He said the three counties should adhere to multilateralism and improve global governance, resolutely defend the victory of the Second World War and promote the democratisation and the rule of law in international relations. They should maintain the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, ensure the authority and effectiveness of the UN, and strengthen communication and coordination within the UN framework. They should build an open world economy, maintain the multilateral trading system based on the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and ensure the safe and smooth operation of the global industrial supply chain.
