<img class="gwt-Image" src="/photo/27180773.cms" style="" /> Here is one <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> <keyword id="6363750" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="flick">flick</keyword> that has drawn flak from critics and still managed to make waves at the <keyword id="25892" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="box-office">box office</keyword>. <keyword id="1969491" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shahid-Kapoor-Sonakshi-Sinha-starrer">Shahid Kapoor-Sonakshi Sinha starrer</keyword> <keyword id="1918749" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="R-Rajkumar">R… Rajkumar</keyword> is an action-packed masala <keyword id="6356021" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="movie">movie</keyword> with numerous <keyword id="1322471" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="dance-numbers">dance numbers</keyword> (well, that’s the least you can expect from <keyword id="303" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Director">director</keyword> <keyword id="21117" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Prabhu-Deva">Prabhu Deva</keyword>) and a spicy mix of <keyword id="6360094" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Fights">fights</keyword>, <keyword id="20721" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="romance">romance</keyword>, <keyword id="6359193" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Comedy">comedy</keyword>, <keyword id="391442" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="social-issues">social issues</keyword> and political conflicts. If that sounds a bit confusing, here’s the other side of the coin. In spite of the predictable and unsavoury mix of many elements, the movie has raked in some big money after an average-to-good opening on December 6. Day I collections stood at around Rs 9.5 crore, the <keyword id="1969490" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Biggest-opening-for-Shahid">biggest opening for Shahid</keyword> till date (Mausam comes second with Rs 7 crore nett on the opening day). R… Rajkumar has grossed around Rs 37.2 crore after the 4th day, keeping the audience happy and the cash register ringing. 
 
But there are loads of side issues to consider in this case. Surprisingly, much of the business came from the single screens while multiplexes saw a lukewarm response during the first weekend. However, R… Rajkumar has certainly romped past <keyword id="333" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Saif-Ali-Khan">Saif Ali Khan</keyword>’s <keyword id="1952408" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gangster-flick">gangster flick</keyword> Bullett Raja that grossed only Rs 25 crore at the end of Day IV. After the 11th day (it opened on November 29), the <keyword id="1960832" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Saif-Sonakshi-starrer">Saif-Sonakshi starrer</keyword> is still languishing with a total collection of Rs 46.60 crore. 
 
Going by the numbers, Shahid’s all-new Dabaang-like <keyword id="44111" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Avatar">avatar</keyword> (a far cry from the sophisticated <keyword id="111697" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="BADMAASH-COMPANY">Badmaash Company</keyword>) has managed to capture the audience after a series of flop shows. But critics have torn it apart and not without reasons, either. The movie veers between mindless violence and inane comedy while watering down some things as serious as corruption and custodial rape. 
 <keyword id="122490" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="film-critic">Film critic</keyword> and analyst Taran Adarsh has tweeted: #RRajkumar movie review: Doesn’t work. It is Prabhu Dheva’s weakest Hindi film to date! Taran, however, acknowledges its box office success, saying: #RRajkumar sails safe! 
 
Film critic Anupama Chopra writes, “R…Rajkumar is ostensibly Prabhu Dheva’s first non-remake Hindi film but you’ve seen it all before… That’s not enough to take you through <keyword id="818790" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="the-rest">the rest</keyword> of this bludgeoning movie. I’m going with one and half stars.” 
 
Others, too, are quite caustic about Shahid’s flick. According to Tushar Joshi of DNA, “Watch it if you are in the mood for a loud no-brainer that relies on formulaic over the top entertainment.” Shubhra Gupta (Indian Express) wrote, “It is nothing but blank putrid noise. R… for Rubbish.” Subhash K. Jha of SKJBollywoodnews comments, “R… Rajkumar is Prabhudheva’s rumbustious raga of the Rowdy.” 
 
But all said and done, the latest flick has helped Shahid come out of a three-movie span of either flops or middling performers. His earlier release this year was Phata Poster Nikhla Hero, an action comedy directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. The movie earned around Rs 37.1 crore in India in a span of two weeks and was declared a flop. <keyword id="894544" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="Teri-Meri-Kahaani">Teri Meri Kahaani</keyword> (2012) and Mausam (2011) suffered similar fate even after good starts and critical acclaim. Mausam, a romantic comedy, collected Rs 44 crore nett in its first week and ended its lifetime collections with Rs 69 crore nett. <keyword id="1101066" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="40" keywordseo="teri-meri">Teri Meri</keyword>, a rom-com directed by <keyword id="6530774" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="kunal-kohli">Kunal Kohli</keyword>, finished with average overseas business of around $2.3 million. At home, the movie collected around Rs 23 crore. 
 
Does it mean only age-old formula movies can churn out money as far as the Indian audience is concerned? Not really, but the reception of R…Rajkumar seems a bit paradoxical. However, the coming weeks are sure to reveal more about the trend, and we will wait and watch.

Critics Are Sceptical But ‘R… Rajkumar’ Rakes In Big Money

This time, it is Tigmanshu Dhulia’s <keyword id="1604723" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bullett-Raja">Bullett Raja</keyword>, starring <keyword id="333" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Saif-Ali-Khan">Saif Ali Khan</keyword> and <keyword id="62210" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sonakshi-Sinha">Sonakshi Sinha</keyword>. In spite of all the promo and hoopla, the gangster-thriller couldn’t rock the <keyword id="25892" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="box-office">box office</keyword> and only grossed Rs 25 crore at the end of the 4th day, according to industry estimates. That’s a paltry sum, going by movies like <keyword id="500441" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="Krrish-3">Krrish 3</keyword> (Rs 24.5 crore on the opening day alone and a total of Rs 267.9 crore till December 2) or even the trouble-torn <keyword id="1886157" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ram-Leela">Ram-Leela</keyword>. The latter’s <keyword id="1960834" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="BO-collection">BO collection</keyword> was a little less than Rs 60 crore after Day IV, but this flick from <keyword id="6358308" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="sanjay-leela-bhansali">Sanjay Leela Bhansali</keyword> has finally entered the Rs 100 crore club and grossed around Rs 110 crore till date. 
 But let’s come back to the <keyword id="1960832" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Saif-Sonakshi-starrer">Saif-Sonakshi starrer</keyword> and try to decode why the stickiness is missing. Based in a small town in <keyword id="6357713" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Uttar-Pradesh">Uttar Pradesh</keyword>, the movie is mostly about <keyword id="97981" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gangsters">gangsters</keyword> and <keyword id="1960835" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gun-fest">gun fest</keyword> while Sonakshi plays Saif’s love interest. The theme may not sound too original, but it hasn’t drawn too much flak either. In fact, film critic and analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted about it quite enthusiastically: #BullettRaja movie review: Enjoyable, engaging and extremely distinctive. Not to be missed! But that was on November 27 and only a couple of days later, the reality hit hard. According to his column, this ‘Bullett’ has missed the mark! The movie got mixed reaction from other <keyword id="20998" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="critics">critics</keyword> and that seems to be reflecting in the box office. 
 If Saif fans are hoping for a <keyword id="46426" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Turnaround">turnaround</keyword> (à la Ram-Leela) in the coming weeks, they could be mightily disappointed. After all, Shahid Kapoor-starrer <keyword id="1960837" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="R-Raajkumar">R... Raajkumar</keyword> is coming up this Friday (December 6) and it has a similar theme – that of a small-time goon, caught up in a criminal life. Interestingly, Sonakshi is also the lead lady there and considering the fact that it is directed by <keyword id="21117" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Prabhu-Deva">Prabhu Deva</keyword>, Saif’s flick could be in for some tough competition. 
 
Finally, we can’t help asking the inevitable – is Saif losing his touch? Although <keyword id="5819" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="cocktail">Cocktail</keyword> ($920 million) and <keyword id="588009" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Race-2">Race-2</keyword> ($16 million) saw good response at the box office, other movies including <keyword id="146746" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Aarakshan">Aarakshan</keyword> (domestic net $6.5 million), <keyword id="79972" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Agent-Vinod">Agent Vinod</keyword> ($8.4 million against an estimated budget of $9.2 million) and <keyword id="812183" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Go-Goa-Gone">Go Goa Gone</keyword> ($3.8 million) failed to take off. 
 
End note: <keyword id="9271" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Sunny-Deol">Sunny Deol</keyword>’s rustic action flick <keyword id="1481019" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Singh-Saab-The-Great">Singh Saab the Great</keyword> has grossed Rs 42.1 crore till December 2 while Imran-Kareena’s <keyword id="1636016" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="rom-com">rom-com</keyword> <keyword id="1538595" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Gori-Tere-Pyaar-Mein">Gori Tere Pyaar Mein</keyword> has collected only Rs 30.20 crore. It seems both Saif and <keyword id="2857" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bebo">Bebo</keyword> need some good luck and solid <keyword id="120143" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="crowd-support">crowd support</keyword> to sail through the coming weeks.

‘Bullett Raja’ Falls Wide Of The Mark;
Faces Tough Time Ahead

The first Friday of June has already witnessed a <keyword id="18564" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="blockbuster">blockbuster</keyword> in the making as Akshay Kumar-Sonakshi Sinha-starrer Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty has raked in the crores in the first four days and is fast nearing the Rs 50 crore mark. 
 The power-packed <keyword id="582722" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="action-thriller">action thriller</keyword>, written and directed by <keyword id="39359" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="a-r-murugadoss">A.R. Murugadoss</keyword> (he made his Hindi debut with Aamir Khan-starrer <keyword id="17231" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Ghajini">Ghajini</keyword>), netted Rs 41.32 crore at the <keyword id="827271" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Domestic-Box-Office">domestic box office</keyword> after the first three days (trade figure stands at 40.23 crore) while first Monday collections amounted to Rs 8.02 crore, as per <keyword id="6356809" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="producer">producer</keyword> figure. The film also had a decent collection abroad during the debut weekend, grossing around Rs 10.61 crore. Holiday was released in more than 41 countries and has already surpassed the lifetime collections of <keyword id="1020628" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ragini-MMS-2">Ragini MMS 2</keyword> (Rs 47 crore) and Amitabh Bachchan-starrer Bhoothnath Returns (Rs 39 crore). 
 
Holiday netted Rs 12.18 crore on the opening Friday, making it the fourth highest opening day grosser of 2014, behind <keyword id="6354583" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Salman-Khan">Salman Khan</keyword>’s <keyword id="6593120" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jai-Ho">Jai Ho</keyword> (Rs 17.55 crore), Ranveer Singh-Arjun Kapoor starrer Gunday (Rs 16.12 crore) and <keyword id="114453" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Arjun-Kapoor">Arjun Kapoor</keyword>’s 2 States (Rs 12.42 crore). The movie also witnessed the third highest opening weekend of the current year – behind Jai Ho (Rs 58.07 crore) and Gunday (Rs 40.26 crore). 
 Other two releases of the week include <keyword id="1598621" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nitin-Kakkar">Nitin Kakkar</keyword>’s critically acclaimed movie <keyword id="1600793" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Filmistaan">Filmistaan</keyword> and <keyword id="2151778" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nisha-Pahuja">Nisha Pahuja</keyword>’s award-winning documentary <keyword id="2109617" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="The-World-Before-Her">The World Before Her</keyword>. In spite of good reviews, Filmistaan fared poorly due to lack of promotion and star value, netting Rs 3.19 crore at home after Day IV. However, the movie netted better on first Monday, earning around Rs 54 lakh, compared to Rs 51 lakh on the opening Friday. We don’t have the numbers yet for Pahuja’s documentary. 
 
Coming back to <keyword id="2113212" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Holiday-A-Soldier-Is-Never-Off-Duty">Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty</keyword>, the Akshay-Sonakshi starrer has many a surprise in store, thanks to the twists and turns of a complex plot that interweaves some slick action and offbeat romance with serious issues like brutal terrorism and deep-rooted corruption. This one is a remake of the <keyword id="2317374" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tamil-action-thriller">Tamil action thriller</keyword> <keyword id="916764" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Thuppakki">Thuppakki</keyword> (starring Vijay and <keyword id="38180" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Kajal-Aggarwal">Kajal Aggarwal</keyword>) that won both critical acclaim and <keyword id="1996041" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Box-office-success">box office success</keyword>. The Hindi remake is equally enthralling, if not more, and Akki (<keyword id="2317380" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Captain-Virat-Bakshy">Captain Virat Bakshy</keyword>) rules the flick till the end. While the soldier on leave springs into action to save Mumbai from the clutches of the terrorists, his lady love <keyword id="1579477" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Saiba">Saiba</keyword> (<keyword id="62210" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sonakshi-Sinha">Sonakshi Sinha</keyword>) turns out to be a <keyword id="340167" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="professional-boxer">professional boxer</keyword> and not the traditional Indian girl he has assumed her to be. Overall, an enjoyable movie in spite of some logical fault lines in the story.

In sharp contrast, Nitin Kakkar’s directorial debut Filmistaan once again harks back to the untold realities of <keyword id="136188" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indo-Pak-relations">Indo-Pak relations</keyword>, seen through the eyes of <keyword id="609" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sunny">Sunny</keyword> (<keyword id="1600789" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sharib-Hashmi">Sharib Hashmi</keyword>), a <keyword id="2317356" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="small-time-actor-turned-documentary-director">small-time-actor-turned-documentary-director</keyword>. His <keyword id="6374782" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="journey">journey</keyword> through ‘enemy’ territory and the days spent there in captivity gradually unveil the human and cultural bonding that never fails to exist in spite of the political divide. 
 
Finally, we come to Nisha Pahuja’s The World Before Her – a 90-minute documentary that follows the contrasting lifestyles of two <keyword id="624" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Women">women</keyword> in search of empowerment. And in doing so, Pahuja reveals some disturbing questions that are bound to haunt today’s women. As <keyword id="210839" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Critic">critic</keyword> Shubhra Gupta so rightly points out: There are not just two Indias... There are many more. What choices do the girls who live in those other Indias have? Do they have any at all?

Last Friday (May 30) saw the release of just two flicks – Hansal Mehta-directed <keyword id="502037" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Citylights">Citylights</keyword> and newbie film-maker <keyword id="1307809" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Aman-Sachdeva">Aman Sachdeva</keyword>’s <keyword id="1444695" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kuku-Mathur-Ki-Jhand-Ho-Gayi">Kuku Mathur Ki Jhand Ho Gayi</keyword> (well, this one is produced by <keyword id="6354597" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ekta-Kapoor">Ekta Kapoor</keyword>, <keyword id="154993" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Shobha-Kapoor">Shobha Kapoor</keyword> and Bejoy Nambiar). Although both are hatke movies in a way and the former has earned enough critical accolades, none could manage an impressive showing at the <keyword id="827271" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Domestic-Box-Office">domestic box office</keyword> and recorded only 5-10% occupancy on debut day. 
 
Citylights, however, did considerably well after collecting just Rs 70 lakh on the opening Friday. The movie hit 500 screens and went on to earn Rs 3.57 crore at home in the first three days, according to <keyword id="6356809" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="producer">producer</keyword> figure (trade figure puts it at Rs 3.18 crore). But the crucial first Monday collections dipped again to Rs 60 lakh (approx). However, keeping in mind it is a <keyword id="2289947" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Low-budget-movie">low-budget movie</keyword> and cost around Rs 7 crore including P&amp;A, Citylights may just avoid losses. 
 
On the other hand, <keyword id="2289921" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kuku-Mathur">Kuku Mathur</keyword> Ki Jhand Ho Gayi, a rom-com drama with a <keyword id="2289946" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="quirky-title">quirky title</keyword> and an unmistakable <keyword id="2289944" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Delhi-flavour">Delhi flavour</keyword>, has garnered a paltry Rs 1.60 crore over the first weekend, against an estimated budget of Rs 6 crore. In addition, it has landed into further trouble as a resident of <keyword id="6355556" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="bhopal">Bhopal</keyword> has reportedly filed a Public Interest Litigation (<keyword id="6355791" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="PIL">PIL</keyword>) against <keyword id="766823" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Balaji-Motion-Pictures">Balaji Motion Pictures</keyword>, claiming that the film’s title has hurt the sentiments of the Kayastha community. Kuku Mathur was released across 700 screens but going by its performance, it can be a clean washout at the box office. 
 
But what has gone wrong with Citylights? For one, the movie gives you a taste of unsavoury reality that is bound to jolt viewers. Inspired by the British film <keyword id="467511" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Metro-Manila">Metro Manila</keyword>, Citylights by <keyword id="303" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Director">director</keyword> <keyword id="4684" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Hansal-Mehta">Hansal Mehta</keyword> (of Shahid fame) pieces together the gripping tale of an <keyword id="2289953" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Uprooted-family">uprooted family</keyword> and their desperate struggle to survive in the ruthless city of Mumbai. The <keyword id="1097560" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="storyline">storyline</keyword> unveils a touching human document, superbly portrayed by the lead couple – <keyword id="1946388" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rajkummar-Rao">Rajkummar Rao</keyword> (<keyword id="6357110" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="deepak">Deepak</keyword>) and debutante <keyword id="2222926" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Patralekha">Patralekha</keyword>. Even the crime drama blends well with the colourful kaleidoscope – gentle, sombre, harsh and tragic at times. The ending is undoubtedly filmy, but the rest shines with a rare sensitivity that saves Citylights from being a cliché.

In contrast, Kuku Mathur is a <keyword id="2289956" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Light-comedy">light comedy</keyword>, telling the story of two fast <keyword id="343" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Friends">friends</keyword> – Kuku Mathur (<keyword id="803840" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Siddharth-Gupta">Siddharth Gupta</keyword>) and <keyword id="2289924" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ronnie-Gulati">Ronnie Gulati</keyword> (<keyword id="2222736" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ashish-Juneja">Ashish Juneja</keyword>) – and their coming of age. This one is Sachdeva’s debut film and there are the usual hiccups in terms of plot and characters. But the lead duo and <keyword id="38050" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Amit-Sial">Amit Sial</keyword> (<keyword id="2289962" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Prabhakar-Bhaiya">Prabhakar Bhaiya</keyword>, the baddie uncle trying to influence Kuku) have put in some fantastic acting; the humour is quite <keyword id="678332" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Subtle">subtle</keyword> at times and the <keyword id="2289967" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Delhi-backdrop">Delhi backdrop</keyword> adds some endearing local colours. Kuku’s culinary aspirations bring in a fresh <keyword id="30450" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="Touch">touch</keyword>, but a crisper storyline and engaging <keyword id="42057" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Screenplay">screenplay</keyword> could have improved the film vastly. Overall, an average movie with a few ‘wow’ moments and that partly explains the poor box office response. 
 But in case you are longing for another <keyword id="654103" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="smash">smash</keyword> hit like <keyword id="1849408" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kochadaiiyaan">Kochadaiiyaan</keyword> or even <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Box-Office-Kochadaiiyaan-Thrives-On-Rajini-Power-Heropanti-Soaring-High/articleshow/35710189.cms">Heropanti</a>, wait till you get to watch Akshay Kumar-starrer <keyword id="2113212" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Holiday-A-Soldier-Is-Never-Off-Duty">Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty</keyword>, to be released on June 6. It is a remake of the Tamil hit <keyword id="2289970" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tuppaki">Tuppaki</keyword> and also stars <keyword id="62210" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sonakshi-Sinha">Sonakshi Sinha</keyword>. Let us wait and see if ‘Akki’ can break the box office jinx.

Impressive But Tanks At Box Office; Kuku Mathur Doesn’t Take Off

After fighting the censor board and getting the movie cleared with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Udta-Punjab-will-be-released-with-just-ONE-cut-and-A-certificate/articleshow/52728825.cms">just one cut and an A-certification</a>, the makers of <keyword id="6356850" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Udta-Punjab">Udta Punjab</keyword> are now fighting piracy issues.

Just two days before release, ‘Udta Punjab’, was leaked online. Phantom Films has filed a copyright theft case with the cybercrime cell. It is being speculated that the copy that was submitted to the censor board was uploaded on various torrentz sites. 
 
The download links were removed later owing to copyright complaint. 
 
Following the piracy issue, Bollywood celebrities have come out in support of the movie, urging fans to watch it in theatres. 
 
From Aamir Khan to Bipasha Basu, Bollywood actors and actresses took to Twitter and backed Udta Punjab’s star cast and decried piracy.

#UdtaPunjab: From Aamir Khan to Karan Johar and their
Tweets against piracy, a day after movie is leaked online

While films like The Lunch Box, Raanjhanaa and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag won critics’ love, the likes of Chennai Express and Grand Masti raked in a lot of money. Still, after the unexpected disaster that Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Besharam has turned out to be (despite the biggest names backing it), a question mark hangs over the fate of the upcoming <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> flicks. 
 
Here’s a look at the 5 big-banner films that will make or break Bollywood’s fortune in the final quarter of CY2013… 
 
<keyword id="22939" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="boss">Boss</keyword> This action comedy caper starring <keyword id="2823" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Akshay-Kumar">Akshay Kumar</keyword> is the remake of the Malayalam film Pokkiri Raja. And a lot is at stake concerning this movie, directed by Anthony D’Souza, which is all set to release on 400-plus screens worldwide, including Europe, <keyword id="6378080" type="COUNTRY" weightage="40" keywordseo="North-America">North America</keyword>, South-east Asia and Australia. Will it make it big at the box office, especially when there’s no lead lady paired opposite Khiladi Kumar? Will Aditi Rao Hyadri’s bikini act, Sonakshi Sinha’s item number ‘Saari Raat Party,’ which is touted to be the most expensive song ever (INR 6 million), and Akki’s action-comedy be enough to make Boss rule? The answers will be out on Oct 16 when Boss hits the screens. 
 
Krrish 3 Even <keyword id="1989" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Rakesh-Roshan">Rakesh Roshan</keyword> must be losing sleep over his ‘super hero’ venture starring son <keyword id="6354563" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Hrithik-Roshan">Hrithik Roshan</keyword> – a flick with a high-flying budget of Rs 100 crore. If the buzz is to be believed, good news for the Roshans is that the distribution rights of Krrish 3 are already sold for Rs 140 crore with minimum guarantee, earmarking ‘table’ profit for the ambitious film. It is the third part of the franchise that started with Koi Mil…Gaya. Starring Hrithik Roshan, <keyword id="1655" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Priyanka-Chopra">Priyanka Chopra</keyword>, Kangana Ranaut and <keyword id="13902" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Vivek-Oberoi">Vivek Oberoi</keyword>, Krrish 3 is getting loads of attention for its special effects that are of international quality. Will the movie manage to retain the hype till Nov 1 or will it be yet another bubble burst?

Ironically, the reasons that make Ram Leela a hotly discussed flick could be the ones that may lead to its failure. So far, we love what director <keyword id="6358308" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="sanjay-leela-bhansali">Sanjay Leela Bhansali</keyword> has featured in the trailer, as well as the songs of the movie. Made on a budget of Rs 35 crore, the magnitude of this film is immense, the canvas is vibrant and the protagonists are two most good-looking people (<keyword id="598" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Deepika-Padukone">Deepika Padukone</keyword> and <keyword id="106133" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Ranveer-Singh">Ranveer Singh</keyword>) with a sizzling chemistry. On the flip side, we still remember Saawariya (Ranbir Kapoor-Sonam Kapoor starrer) and Guzaarish (Hrithik <keyword id="1903405" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Roshan-Aishwarya-Rai-Bachchan">Roshan-Aishwarya Rai Bachchan</keyword> starrer), both directed by SLB. Well, one turned out to be a dud and the other was appreciated only by the critics. So this time, we are just keeping our fingers crossed for Ram Leela. 
 
Gori Tere Pyaar Mein Last time when <keyword id="2165" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Kareena-Kapoor">Kareena Kapoor</keyword> and <keyword id="14676" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Imran-Khan">Imran Khan</keyword> came together, the audience didn’t have much fun watching the rom com, Ekk Main Aur Ekk Tu. Will they be able to impress this time around, with this <keyword id="3778" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Karan-Johar">Karan Johar</keyword> production? Not just actors but the lists included directors, musicians and movies that have inspired the most digital curiosity in India since 2006. 
 No surprises there that one of the most popular Indian actors, <keyword id="6354583" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Salman-Khan">Salman Khan</keyword> makes it to the top of the Google’s most searched list. <keyword id="836886" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sunny-Leone">Sunny Leone</keyword> has made to the most searched actress on the Google’s List leaving behind Katrina Kaif. While <keyword id="6357912" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="amitabh-bachchan">Amitabh Bachchan</keyword> and Rekha were the most searched for classic actor and actress. Karan Johar’s digital popularity has been surpassed by South Indian actor and director, Prabhu Deva on the list for most searched directors. PK tops the list for most searched movies and Honey Singh makes it to the top with his music and controversies. 
 Looking at the interest and curiosity online for Indian Cinema, Google has recently re designed their search experience for the <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> fans. India’s Marketing Head, Sapna Chadha said “With around 1 in 10 mobile searches in India related to Indian cinema, we recently launched a range of immersive Search experiences that give film lovers an easy way to discover and explore everything they want to know about their favorite movies, stars, music, dialogues actors and more”

<img class="gwt-Image" src="/photo/47830635.cms" />June is at the fag end and we almost have a mid-year report card of Bollywood. Though the year started on a dismal note, it picked up towards May and June. 
 
This year, January was like a drought month and even movies starring big names did not interest the audience. As Arjun Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha starrer-'Tevar'- failed to take off, even the Horrex (horror + sex) formula did not work out for ‘Alone’ and ‘Khamoshiyan’. 
 
Other movies that released in January and failed to make a mark included Sonam Kapoor-starrer ‘Dolly Ki Doli’, 'Sharafat Gayi Tel Lene', ‘Crazy Cukkad Family’, ‘Hawaizaada’ among others. 
 
The only respite that the Bollywood lovers got was from Akshay Kumar’s ‘Baby’, which also became the first movie of 2015 to enter the Rs 100 crore club. 
 
But the jinx did not end in January as February continued to bring more bad news for the industry. 
 
The big shocker came in the form of ‘Shamitabh’. The movie, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Dhanush, was directed by R Balki, the maker who has given us movies like Pa and Cheeni Kum. 
 
Later in the month, ‘Roy’ released, which recorded a good start but by weekend the movie fizzled out. Most trade pundits pegged the crucial India-Pakistan match at the World Cup as the reason for the drop of sales on Sunday but the movie could not recover much post this phase also because of negative word of mouth. 
 
Thankfully, later in the same month we had movies like ‘Badlapur’ and ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’. Both managed to gather decent collections at the Box Office. In fact, ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’ was a complete surprise package and managed to pull crowds even in its third week . 
 
March threw a mixed bag as Anushka Sharma starrer 'NH-10' received critical acclaim. April again was a dry month as Bollywood had nothing to offer that could have clicked with the Bolly buffs. 
 
However, Bollywood saw a turnaround in May. It started on a high note with Akshay Kumar starrer ‘Gabbar is Back’, which went to collect Rs 86.55 crore at the Box Office. This was followed by Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan and Irrfan Khan’s 'Piku', which struck a right chord with the audience and collected Rs 111 crore worldwide. 
 
Later in the month, Kangana Ranaut wowed the audience with her spectacular acting in ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’. As per reports, the movie managed to collect Rs 190.87 crore worldwide. Given that the movie was made with Rs 31 crore budget, it stood out and is the most profitable movie of 2015 till date. 
 
But, the disappointment came from ‘Bombay Velvet’. Everybody had high hopes from Ranbir Kapoor’s flick but it fell flat. 
 
The momentum seems to continue with ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ and ‘ABCD 2’. ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ has managed Rs 37.05 crore in the first weekend and is holding the fort well. Also ABCD 2, sequel of ABCD, managed to get the biggest opening for 2015 and continues to do a good business over the week. 
 
The later half will see a slew of big- starrer movies such as Salman Khan starrer ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’, Vikas Bahl of Queen fame’s ‘Shaandaar’, ‘Singh is Bling’ featuring Akshay Kumar, Nikhil Advani’s ‘Katti Batti’, Aishwarya Rai’s comeback movie ‘Jazbaa’ and also ‘Dilwale’ in which fans will see Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol paired together. In addition, there will also be a third installment of ‘Hate Story’, ‘Hera Pheri’ and ‘Kya Kool Hai Hum’ to look forward to. 
 
Commenting on the movie sentiment of 2015, Komal Nahata, Trade Analyst shared, “It has been a good 2015 so far. Sure there were some upsets in the start of the year but May has been extremely kind and the rest of the year looks really promising." 
 
We hope that the forthcoming movies get the cash ringer buzzing for Bollywood and we continue to see some entertaining movies in the latter half of the year.
