India's landslide victory through an unopposed inclusion into the <keyword id="138690" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="United-Nations-Security-Council">United Nations Security Council</keyword> (UNSC) as a non-permanent member has irked the Imran Khan-led government in Pakistan, as angry reactions have started coming out of Islamabad, threatening India of dire consequences in case of any misadventure committed along the <keyword id="44759" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Line-of-Control">Line of Control</keyword> (LoC) and the Working Boundary (WB). Pakistan's Foreign Minister <keyword id="121648" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shah-Mahmood-Qureshi">Shah Mahmood Qureshi</keyword> has warned India against any misadventure, threatening of a telling retaliatory response. "Beware, beware, remember February 2019 and be ready for a quick retaliation while casting an evil eye on us," he said during his address to the Upper House (Senate) of Pakistan. Qureshi lashed out at Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indian External Affairs Minister S. <keyword id="236448" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jaishankar">Jaishankar</keyword>, asserting, "Pakistan can't be cowed down by the Indians." Qureshi also reiterated Islamabad's inclination towards Beijing in the recent deadly clashes in Ladakh between Indian and Chinese forces, stating that Indian soldiers were suffering casualties there. "There is a dramatic shift in the region. China has openly landed in the arena against India," he said. "Nepal, which was thought to be completely under India's influence, is now making claims on some disputed areas with India, while Sri Lanka and Bhutan also had their objections. Afghanistan also thinks India is impeding reconciliation process there," he added. Qureshi briefed the Senate stating that India is facing isolation and New Delhi is feeling the pressure. He also reiterated Islamabad's concerns over what they call a false-flag operation by New Delhi aimed at diverting attention of the global community from the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, which has remained under lockdown for almost a year now. Qureshi's aggressive remarks came at a time when the Imran Khan-led government is facing serious criticism from its opposition parties for failing to raise the issue of Kashmir at the UN platform and giving India a walkover to become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. While Pakistan voted against India's contention for the non-permanent membership, its vote didn't matter as a heavy majority voted in favour of New Delhi. "Though it was a secret balloting, Pakistan openly said that it had voted against India for last year's August 5 unconstitutional steps it took in occupied Jammu and Kashmir and for violating the UN Charter, UNSC resolutions and international norms," maintained Qureshi. Pakistan's anger over India's inclusion into the UNSC is understandable as its ongoing diplomatic campaign to attract support against the Modi government for its decision taken on August 5, 2019, abrogating Articles 370 and 35A, changing the special status of the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories, in the United Nations has practically failed to yield results. Tensions at the Line of Control (LoC) have also intensified in the recent days as heavy exchanges of artillery firing have claimed lives of border security forces and civilians on both sides. Pakistan and India both have been lodging strong protests against the ceasefire violations, summoning senior diplomats of respective high commissions to record their protests. Tensions are expected to flare up in the coming days as August 5, 2020 inches closer, marking one year of the lockdown in Jammu and Kashmir, for which Islamabad is gearing up to stage protests, rallies and international conferences. Pakistan warns India 'to be ready for quick retaliation' amid LoC tensions and UNSC membership

Shehbaz Sharif to be elected as Pakistan's new PM today amidst protests against Imran Khan's ouster

Pakistan on Thursday asked the Taliban to grasp the opportunity and resume talks with the US for an early and peaceful resolution of the conflict in Afghanistan, saying war is not a solution, as top leaders of the militant group met Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi here. A high-level Taliban delegation met Qureshi as part of a push to revive the Afghan peace process stalled after US President Donald Trump abruptly declared the talks with the rebel group "dead". The Foreign Office said in a statement that a delegation of the Taliban Political Commission (TPC) called on Qureshi. The delegation was led by the head of TPC Mulla Abdul Ghani Baradar and included senior members of the commission. Welcoming the delegation, the Foreign Minister noted that while the people of both Afghanistan and Pakistan have a shared history, geography and culture, Islam remains the strongest bond between the two brotherly countries. "While appreciating Taliban's serious engagement in the peace process, he underscored the need to take these efforts to their logical conclusion," Qureshi said. Qureshi noted that the existing, broad regional and international consensus for achieving peace in Afghanistan at the earliest provided an unprecedented opportunity that must not be lost. The US and the Taliban had agreed on draft peace plan, but the process was suspend by President Trump following killing of an American soldier in Kabul last month in a suicide attack claimed by the Taliban. Trump stunned the world when he suddenly declared that the Afghan peace talks with the Taliban were "dead". He cancelled a secret meeting with the Taliban and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani at Camp David near Washington after the Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack in Kabul, in which an American soldier was among the dead. Qureshi said it was up to the parties to the conflict in Afghanistan to grasp this opportunity. Qureshi also expressed the hope that the currently paused peace process would be restarted at an early date. Qureshi said that "Pakistan has maintained for several years that there is no military solution to the complex situation in Afghanistan. An inclusive peace and reconciliation process, involving all sections of the Afghan society, was the only, practical way forward. "It was time to make all possible efforts for an early and peaceful resolution of the conflict in Afghanistan, he said. Qureshi added that Pakistan would continue to support all efforts to achieve permanent peace in Afghanistan which was essential for Pakistan's own socio-economic development and progress. Qureshi said all these years Pakistan has also kept reminding the world not to overlook the hardcore political, economic, socio-cultural and ethnic ground realities in Afghanistan and its immediate neighborhood. Foreign Minister further noted that the direct Taliban-US talks since last year, strongly and sincerely supported by Pakistan, had now laid a firm ground for achieving a sustainable peace deal in Afghanistan. "A pacific settlement of the conflict would lead to a significant reduction of violence, end of bloodshed and long-term peace, stability and prosperity for future generations of Afghanistan, he said. This was first ever visit of a Taliban delegation to Pakistan since the establishment of the TPC. Official sources said that the talks between Qureshi and the Taliban went on for more than one and half hours. Chief of Inter-Services Intelligence spy agency Lt Gen. Faiz Hameed was also present in the meeting. The delegation will also held more meetings with the civil and military officials of Pakistan but the details have not been shared. The delegation is also expected to meet American officials. US special envoy to Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad is also in Pakistan to discuss the revival of the peace talks. He may also meet the Taliban delegation. Khalilzad's visit comes days after Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan's visit to the US where he met Trump and among other issues discussed the revival of negotiations to bring peace in Afghanistan. Since his appointment in September last year, Afghanistan-born Khalilzad has met with all sides in an attempt to end America's longest war in which the US has lost over 2,400 soldiers in more than 17 years. The Taliban control nearly half of Afghanistan, and are more powerful now than they were at any time since the 2001 US-led invasion after the 9/11 terror attacks. The US has continued to push for a ceasefire in the war-torn country and the opening of negotiations between the Taliban and the Kabul government. The Taliban, however, have repeatedly refused to meet with officials of the Afghan government, whom they dismiss as "puppets". The US has long considered Pakistani cooperation crucial to efforts to end the war in Afghanistan.

Wang’s comments come amid fresh tensions between Islamabad and New Delhi over Kashmir. India <a href="https://www.scmp.com/news/asia/south-asia/article/3021443/india-seeks-abolishes-kashmirs-special-status-constitution" class="link-text">for the United Nations Security Council to hold “closed consultations” on the revoking of the state’s autonomy. India is also involved in the Indo-Pacific strategy led by the United States, which Beijing views as a containment strategy to hinder China’s military expansion. Wang stressed that China and Pakistan should cooperate to secure their common economic interests. “The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor [CPEC] is a long-term development plan for Pakistan,” Wang said. “The Pakistani military has made unremitting efforts in corridor construction, especially security.” The corridor, a US$62 billion China-funded infrastructure project, is facing scrutiny in Pakistan over suggestions that it has left the country in a debt trap and is designed to serve China’s political agenda. There have also been security concerns surrounding CPEC projects. In May, gunmen attacked a luxury hotel in the Pakistani port city Gwadar, the hub of a multibillion-dollar Chinese infrastructure project. A regional separatist group, the Baluch Liberation Army, claimed responsibility for the attack. Elsewhere, the China Construction Third Engineering Bureau –a state-owned company that works on the Peshawar-Karachi motorway, a key CPEC project – has previously told Chinese media that around 3,500 security personnel were employed to protect about 1,000 Chinese workers and 19,000 Pakistani employees. “The current regional and international situation is undergoing a complex evolution,” Bajwa said. “I am grateful to China for its strong support to Pakistan during this crucial period. “I believe that with the help of China, the Pakistani side will be able to overcome difficulties, overcome challenges and achieve greater development. The Pakistani side regards the construction of the economic corridor in Pakistan and China as an important opportunity for national development and will work with China to promote cooperation.” Wang met Pakistani President Arif Alvi at the presidential palace in Islamabad, with the pair pledging to work together on anti-terrorism measures and economic cooperation. The question really becomes whether India-Pakistan relations are the only issue that animate Indian interest on a global stage. The focus on regional issues on the global platform keeps India from engaging with other nations on international concerns and takes from the impact that India has on other issues that are been contested.
