Pune, Jul 7 () Vaccine maker Serum Institute of India (SII) is hoping to develop a COVID-19 vaccine by the year-end as it is focusing on a "good and safe" product and is not in a "rush", the company's CEO Adar Poonawalla said on Tuesday. He was speaking during the launch of 'Compact XL, a compact diagnostics machine by MyLab Discovery Solutions, that will automate lab processes from sample handling to preparing RT-PCR tubes. Replying to a question about the development of the COVID-19 vaccine, Poonawalla said that by the end of 2020, the SII is hoping to have a vaccine. "End of the year, we are hoping to have a vaccine. So we will discuss once of the phase three trials for the product come about. Recently, there was news about another vaccine candidate which was being rushed. We do not want to rush anything. We want to emphasis on safety and efficacy... and once we are confident of good and safe vaccine, we will announce but that is still six months away from now," said Adar. He further said that till the vaccine comes, testing is the key and that is why SII has invested in MyLabs. "If you test, isolate and segregate, we can manage the situation till the good cure or vaccine comes around," said Adar. SII has invested over Rs 100 crore in MyLabs, a Pune-based molecular diagnostics firm. Poonawalla lamented that India is not testing enough and added that Indian test manufacturers including MyLabs are picking up the production capacity. "There is a fear that what will happen if the number of positive patients increases. I would like to say that there is no harm if the number increases as it will help us detect people," he added. Poonawalla also sought permission to allow export of the test kits. "We have enough capacity in manufacturing testing kits. MyLab can produce 2 million kits per week and there is no that much demand in India so allow us to export and we have enough buffer stock for India readily available if there is more outbreak," he said adding they are waiting for the government's blessings. She further added,” The virus-like-particle has been used for decades in a licensed vaccine against Hepatitis B. SpyBiotech’s technology allows antigens to be bonded to virus-like-particles in a way that enhances stability and effectiveness.” SpyBiotech has reached an exclusive licensing deal with the Serum Institute of India. Oxford and Serum Institute of India begin human trials of a new COVID-19 vaccine in Australia

New Delhi, Apart from <keyword id="9617748" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="covishield">Covishield</keyword>, the <keyword id="95879" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Serum-Institute-of-India">Serum Institute of India</keyword> (SII) is working on four more <keyword id="79555" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vaccines">vaccines</keyword> against the novel coronavirus, according to <keyword id="363459" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Suresh-Jadhav">Suresh Jadhav</keyword>, executive director at one of the world's largest vaccine manufacturers. Jadhav informed during a webinar that the firm has been working on five vaccines against the novel coronavirus, including the Covishield which got approval for emergency use roll-out for mass immunization drive began on Saturday. "For one (vaccine) we have received emergency approval, three others are in different stages of clinical studies while one is in the pre-clinical stage of the trial," he said. The SII has partnered with Novavax Inc to manufacture its potential Covid-19 vaccine for India and other countries. Under an agreement with the US drug developer, the Pune based drugmaker will develop two hundred crore doses of Novavax's vaccine candidate annually. The drugmaker will also manufacture the antigen component of the vaccine. The SII has also partnered with the US-based Codagenix to manufacture and supply its coronavirus vaccine. The firm's first Covid vaccine is developed from the masterseed of AstraZeneca/Oxford University's vaccine against the disease. It was approved by India's drug regulator on January 3 for emergency use authorization alongwith Bharat Biotech's Covaxin. However, both the drugmakers are being criticised for less transparent data in their clinical trials and receiving the approvals without completing the due process of drug licencing. Commenting on the criticism the vaccine manufacturers have been receiving for getting approvals without completing all the trials, Jadhav said that such chances have been taken earlier as well. "It is not the only time when humanity has taken the chances. Four years back, there was an outbreak of Ebola in Africa and its vaccine by a Canadian pharmaceutical firm which had only completed the phase 1 and undergoing the phase 2 trial, was approved by the <keyword id="43588" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Health-Organization">World Health Organization</keyword> (WHO). The risk paid off and the vaccine helped in controlling the Ebola there," Jadhav added. "In 2009 when the H1N1 pandemic flu struck, we took 1.5 years to develop and receive the approval for the vaccine against it after completing all the stages of clinical trials but the drug manufacturers in the West marketed such products in less than seven months then. Serum Institute of India working on four more COVID-19 vaccines, says executive director

New Delhi, Hyderabad-based <keyword id="149108" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharat-Biotech">Bharat Biotech</keyword> will make a presentation before the <keyword id="3923779" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="subject-expert-committee">Subject Expert Committee</keyword> of the Central Drug Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) on Wednesday evening for approval of its <keyword id="24209" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="vaccine">vaccine</keyword> - Covaxin, government sources. Earlier on Wednesday, the <keyword id="95879" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Serum-Institute-of-India">Serum Institute of India</keyword> (SII)'s application for emergency use authorisation of its Covid-19 vaccine was also considered by the Subject Expert Committee. The development came hours after the United Kingdom accepted the recommendation of the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to authorise the Oxford University-AstraZeneca's Covid-19 vaccine, <keyword id="9617748" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="covishield">Covishield</keyword>, for emergency approval use. The authorisation was significant for India as the Pune-based Serum Institute of India had tied up with Oxford University-AstraZeneca to manufacture the vaccine in India. America's Pfizer was the first to apply on December 4, followed by Serum Institute of India and Bharat Biotech, who applied on December 6 and 7, respectively. Pfizer has, however, requested more time to make its presentation before the committee. On December 9, the Subject Expert Committee had, however, asked Serum Institute of India and Bharat Biotech to submit more data and information to get emergency use approval (EUA) for their vaccine candidates. The expert panel had then asked SII to submit the outcome of the assessment of UK-MHRA for grant of emergency use approval, the updated safety data of the Phase-II/III clinical trials and immunogenecity data from the clinical trial in the UK and India. Bharat Biotech was recommended to present the safety and efficacy data from the ongoing Phase-III clinical trial in the country for further consideration. Both the firms had again submitted their applications last week seeking approval of the vaccine. After SII's Covishield, Bharat Biotech plans to put its COVID-19 vaccine for approval before expert panel

On Saturday, British-Swedish biopharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford said clinical trials for their coronavirus vaccine have resumed in the UK after the Medicines Health Regulatory Authority's (MHRA) confirmed that the trials were safe. SII, which has partnered with AstraZeneca for manufacturing the vaccine candidate for COVID-19, on Tuesday submitted the recommendations of the Data and Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB), UK and DSMB, India, and requested for permission to restart enrolment in the clinical trial. According to Tuesday's order issued by DCGI, the DSMB, UK, recommended that the investigators recommence all immunization in their clinical trials subject to certain conditions. DSMB, India, also has recommended to continue the study and enroll the remaining participants in the clinical trial as per protocol subject to certain conditions. According to the order, SII has submitted revised participant information sheet, revised informed consent form and additional safety monitoring plan for the evolved participants. The Pune-based firm has also submitted a summary of safety follow up of seven days post first vaccination, stating that no serious adverse events were experienced by any of the subjects till the date of the reporting, and the reported adverse events were stated to be mild, resolved on their own and did not have any sequale. "In view of the above, I Dr V G Somani, Drugs Controller General of India, Central Licensing Authority, after careful examination of your reply and the recommendations of the DSMB in India and in UK revoke herewith the order dated September 11 issued under Rule 30 of the New Drugs and Clinical Trials Rules, 2019. "You may recommence the clinical trial as recommended by DSMB, India, as per already approved protocol and the provisions laid down under the New Drugs and Clinical Trial Rules, 2019, subject to the conditions mentioned," the order said. During the meeting, the SII presented their proposal for grant of EUA of COVISHIELD, along with the interim safety data from Phase 3 clinical trial and interim safety and efficacy results of Phase 2/3 and Phase 3 clinical trials carried out in UK, other countries and India, before the committee. COVID-19 vaccine: SII and Bharat Biotech asked to submit more data for emergency approval

The <keyword id="95879" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Serum-Institute-of-India">Serum Institute of India</keyword> (<keyword id="52604" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SII">SII</keyword>) has applied to the Drug Controller General of India (<keyword id="172241" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="DCGI">DCGI</keyword>) seeking permission to manufacture COVID-19 vaccine <keyword id="9739267" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sputnik-V">Sputnik V</keyword> in the country, sources said on Thursday. The Pune-based firm has also sought approval for test analysis and examination. Russia's Sputnik V vaccine is currently being manufactured in India by Dr Reddy's Laboratories. "The <keyword id="242973" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Serum-Institute">Serum Institute</keyword> of India (SII) put up an application to the <keyword id="282629" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Drugs-Controller">Drugs Controller</keyword> General of India (DCGI) on Wednesday seeking permission to manufacture the COVID-19 vaccine, Sputnik V, in India," a source said. The SII has already told the government that it will be able to manufacture and supply 10 crore Covishield doses in June, while it is also manufacturing the Novavax vaccine, the regulatory clearance for which is awaited from the United States. The vaccine was given emergency use authorisation (<keyword id="2503801" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="EUA">EUA</keyword>) by the DCGI in April. A consignment of 30 lakh doses of Sputnik V landed in Hyderabad on Tuesday.
