The Centre on Thursday announced the "Cervavac", <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s first indigenously-developed <keyword id="24209" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="vaccine" source="Orion">vaccine</keyword> for prevention of cervical cancer, will be launched in the next few months and will be available in the price range of Rs 200-Rs 400. Cervical cancer ranks as the 2nd most prevalent cancers in India and accounts for nearly one-fourth of the world's cervical cancer deaths despite being largely preventable. As per current estimates, every year, approximately 1.25 lakh women are diagnosed with cervical cancer, and over 75,000 die from the disease in India, and 83 per cent of invasive cervical cancers are attributed to HPVs 16 or 18 in India, and 70 per cent of cases worldwide. Announcing the scientific completion of the quadrivalent Human Papilloma Virus (qHPV) vaccine in presence of Adar C. Poonawalla, CEO, <keyword id="95879" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="serum-institute-of-india" source="Orion">Serum Institute of India</keyword> and other prominent scientists and dignitaries, Union Science &amp; Technology Minister Jitendra Singh said that this affordable and cost-effective vaccine marks an important day for the DBT and the BIRAC as it takes India a step closer to PM Narendra Modi's vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. He noted that the most promising intervention for preventing cervical cancer is vaccination against human papillomavirus (<keyword id="102327" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="hpv" source="Orion">HPV</keyword>). It is estimated that HPV types 16 and 18 (HPV-16 and HPV-18) together contribute to approximately 70 per cent of all invasive cervical cancer cases worldwide. The first indigenously developed Quadrivalent Human Papillomavirus vaccine (qHPV) vaccine will be launched in few months, Poonawalla said, adding that the vaccine will be available to the people in an affordable price range of Rs 200-400. Poonawalla, in his brief address, said that the wellbeing and protection of mother and child is the core philosophy of <keyword id="242973" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="serum-institute" source="Orion">Serum Institute</keyword> as only a healthy India can be a productive India. Jitendra Singh pointed out that within a year of implementation, the Mission Covid Suraksha demonstrated major achievements such as development of the world's first DNA vaccine for Covid-19 by Cadila Healthcare which received Emergency Use Authorisation on August 20, 2021, and supporting the development of the nation's first mRNA Vaccine and intranasal vaccine candidate against Covid-19. India to launch its first indigenously developed cervical cancer vaccine in the next few months

India's drug regulator has allowed the export of the first produced-in-India vaccine against malaria, developed by scientists at the University of Oxford and manufactured by <keyword id="242973" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Serum-Institute" source="Orion">Serum Institute</keyword> to the UK, official sources said on Thursday. The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has granted permission to send two lakh doses of the vaccine. The move comes after an application was submitted by Prakash Kumar Singh, director, <keyword id="2344259" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Government-and-Regulatory-Affairs" source="Orion">Government and Regulatory Affairs</keyword>, at Serum Institute of India (SII) to DCGI on September 27 seeking permission to export the vaccine against malaria, official sources told PTI. "SII has developed the vaccine against malaria under leadership of our CEO Dr Adar C Poonawalla. We have been relentlessly working to make available made-in-India and world-class vaccines against malaria to our country and world at large," an official source quoted Singh as having said in the application. Currently, only one vaccine against malaria is available globally and GSK is the manufacturer of that. The <keyword id="24212" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="malaria-vaccine" source="Orion">malaria vaccine</keyword> was designed at the Jenner Institute, University of Oxford, which collaborated with the SII in 2020 to manufacture and develop the jab for large- scale supply, the sources said. The vaccine trial results which included 409 children in Nanoro, Burkina Faso showed that three initial doses followed by a booster after a year gives up to 80 per cent protection against the disease, they said. "The Subject Expert Committee of the CDSCO on Wednesday deliberated on the issue and had recommended for market authorisation of Covid jab Covovax as a heterologous booster dose for adults who have been administered two doses of Covishield or Covaxin," an official source said. The DCGI had approved Covovax for restricted use in emergency situations in adults on December 28, 2021, in the 12-17 age group on March 9, 2022, and in children aged 7- 11 years on June 28 last year subject to certain conditions. Covovax is manufactured through technology transfer from Novavax. It has been approved by the European Medicines Agency for conditional marketing authorisation. It was granted emergency-use listing by the <keyword id="43588" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="world-health-organization" source="Orion">World Health Organization</keyword> (WHO) on December 17, 2021. She further added,” The virus-like-particle has been used for decades in a licensed vaccine against Hepatitis B. SpyBiotech’s technology allows antigens to be bonded to virus-like-particles in a way that enhances stability and effectiveness.” SpyBiotech has reached an exclusive licensing deal with the Serum Institute of India. This is the second potential coronavirus vaccine from Oxford under trial. Oxford-Astrazeneca coronavirus vaccine candidate — ChAdOx1-S — is the most advanced vaccine candidate against COVID-19. ChAdOx1-S is under a Phase III trial in the US. Serum Institute applies to Indian authorities for full market authorisation of Covishield

The Health Ministry intends to roll out <keyword id="102327" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="hpv" source="Orion">HPV</keyword> vaccine against cervical cancer in the national immunisation programme for girls aged 9 to 14 years in June for which a global tender is likely to be floated in April, official sources have said. Serum Institute's made-in-India HPV vaccine "CERVAVAC" was launched by Union Home Minister <keyword id="6355521" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="amit-shah" source="Orion">Amit Shah</keyword> on January 24, in presence of the Pune-based firm's CEO <keyword id="383467" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="adar-poonawalla" source="Orion">Adar Poonawalla</keyword> and Prakash Kumar Singh, its Director-Government and Regulatory Affairs. "The ministry is likely to float in April a global tender for 16.02 crore doses of HPV vaccine, which will be supplied by 2026. Apart from domestic manufacturer <keyword id="95879" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="serum-institute-of-india" source="Orion">Serum Institute of India</keyword>, global vaccine manufacturer Merck is also likely to participate in the tender," an official source said. In July last year, <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s drug regulator granted market authorization to Serum Institute of India's indigenously developed HPV vaccine. It has also been cleared by government advisory panel National Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (NTAGI) for use in the public health programme. Prakash Kumar Singh, on the sidelines of a South Asia meet on HPV last month, had said that the price of CERVAVAC will be affordable compared to the international HPV vaccine available in India. India, at present, is fully dependent on foreign manufacturers for HPV vaccines. Globally, three foreign firms manufacture HPV vaccines out of which two sell their doses in India. Each dose of the vaccine available in the market costs more than Rs 4,000, sources said. In September 2022, Poonawalla had said that each dose of its "CERVAVAC" vaccine would cost Rs 200 to Rs 400. India, which is home to about 16 per cent of the world's women, accounts for about a quarter of all cervical cancer incidences and nearly a third of global cervical cancer deaths. Indian women face a 1.6 per cent lifetime cumulative risk of developing cervical cancer and a one per cent cumulative death risk from cervical cancer, according to officials. Recent estimates state that every year almost 80,000 women develop cervical cancer and 35,000 die in India due to it. On what prevented India from introducing the HPV vaccine till now, NTAGI chief Dr N K Arora had said that the vaccine supply has been a limiting factor globally. Fortunately, over the last five years, the global supply of the HPV vaccine has been improving gradually. India has taken a lead in this direction. Serum Institute of India, one of the major Indian vaccine manufacturers, with support from the Centre's Department of Biotechnology has developed four valent HPV vaccine. The vaccine has received regulatory approval and cleared by NTAGI for use in public health programmes. "We are given to understand that three other Indian vaccine manufacturers are also in various stages of developing the HPV vaccine," an official had said.

Govt likely to float global tender for HPV vaccine in April; Merck, Serum Institute may participate

New Delhi, Jan 9 () Vaccine major Serum Institute on Thursday said it has launched a new variant of its WHO prequalified rotavirus vaccine Rotasiil, called Rotasiil - Liquid.
 Available in a single dose tube, Rotasiil - Liquid can be directly administered in 2 ml dose orally, thus saving time as well as cold chain space. It can be stored at 2-8 degrees Celsius for up to 24 months, Serum Institute of India said in a statement.
 Rotavirus is a very contagious virus that causes diarrhoea.
 Rotasiil - Liquid will be available across domestic and international markets. The initial production aim of the vaccine is around 25-30 million doses per annum, which will be augmented to over 80 million doses per annum, it added.
 "The new launch will propel us towards improving the health of our children and reduce hospitalization and conditions related with diarrhea such as malnutrition, delayed physical and mental development amongst children," Serum Institute of India (SII) CEO Adar Poonawalla said.
 As per the World Health Organization (WHO), an estimated 215,000 children under five years of age die each year from vaccine preventable rotavirus infection globally, the statement said.
 In India, rotavirus diarrhoea is among the top ten causes of child morbidity and mortality in children, killing around 47,100 children under five years of age, it added. AKT ABM
