Mumbai, Mar 2 () Fintech non-bank financier SMEcorner on Monday said it has raised USD 30 million (around Rs 210 crore) through a combination of equity and debt in series B funding. The funding round was led by Paragon Partners, which invested USD 10.5 million, and the balance came from existing investors including Quona Capital, Accion Venture Lab, Bharat Shah and few other high networth individuals, according to a company release. "The additional capital will enable us to reach over 20,000 new customers and grow our distribution in the coming year," SMEcorner's founder and CEO, Samir Bhatia, said. Bhatia has also made an undisclosed investment in the current round of funding. The funds raised would go towards rapid business scale-up, lending partnerships and market expansion in the coming financial year. The SME-focussed fintech non-banking financial company plans to lend Rs 1,000 crore by the end of next financial year. The company got its NBFC licence in February 2018 and is currently present across 15 cities in four states of the country. It has over 8,000 customers and has disbursed over Rs 550 crore since obtaining the licence. The company's current assets under management stand at Rs 400 crore. HV ANSANS

SMEcorner raises USD 30 mln in Series B funding

New Delhi, Feb 5 () Agricultural warehousing and logistics firm Leap India Food and Logistics Pvt Ltd on Wednesday said it has raised Rs 164 crore in Series-B funding from the Danish SDG Investment fund and Neev Fund. The Danish SDG Investment fund is a fund managed by Investment Fund for Developing Countries (IFU), Leap India said in a statement. With a twofold mission to connect the grain supply chain from farm to business and to transform itself into a robust Agri-Silos and Logistics platform, Leap India will utilise these funds towards tangible future growth, it added. "SDG Fund's investment, along with round two of investment from the Neev Fund, backed by the UK Government - Department for International Development (DFID) and State Bank of India, will allow us to expand and reach a critical size, while, at the same time, team up with strong, foreign institutional investors," Leap India promoters said. At Leap, the aim is to build a large platform of grain storage sites, which can help FCI and the private sector to make grain storage more efficient with the use of technology and modern storage infrastructure, they added. "By investing in Leap, we are addressing one of India's most pressing challenges, namely helping to improve food storage efficiency and reduce undernourishment, while having secured an attractive risk vs. return profile in the deal," IFU, South Asia VP Deepa Hingorani said. In a similar vein, Neev Fund CIO Manav Bansal said: "We welcome the Danish SDG Investment Fund as a partner and co-investor in Leap India. This fructifies our fidelity to the Sustainable Development Goals of poverty alleviation by doubling farmer income through food security in India." Leap India raises Rs 164 cr in Series-B Funding

New Delhi, Mar 4 () Agri post-harvest services platform Arya on Wednesday said it has raised USD 6 million (about Rs 43 crore) in pre-Series B funding from venture capital firm Omnivore and existing investor LGT Lightstone Aspada. The company plans to use the funding to accelerate the growth of their agri storage network, build their book in warehouse receipt financing, and lay the foundations of a pan-India agri warehousing marketplace, the company said in a statement. Arya plans to launch its Series B fundraising round by mid-2020. "Omnivore's coming on board will strengthen our next generation work to further improve efficiencies in the post-harvest ecosystem," Arya CEO and Co-founder Prasanna Rao said. LGT Lightstone Aspada had earlier invested in Arya's Series A round in December 2016. Based out of Delhi, Arya currently manages over 2.5 million tonnes of agri commodities in its 1,400 warehouses. Also, around 75 per cent of its warehousing capacity is located in primary and secondary markets. Advanced technology battery start-up Log9 Material on Monday said it has raised USD 40 million (nearly Rs 325 crore) in Series B funding led by <keyword id="124764" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="amara-raja-batteries" source="Orion">Amara Raja Batteries</keyword> Ltd and <keyword id="12272190" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="petronas-ventures" source="Orion">Petronas Ventures</keyword>. What inspired the venture: A sabbatical that changed life. In 2008, Anoj took some time off to be with SKS Microfinance and worked on a project to provide solar lanterns on credit in a few tribal villages in <keyword id="6357961" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Odisha">Odisha</keyword>. There he met Mayukh who was then working with the solar lantern-maker D.lightdesign. While on this project, Anoj noticed how <keyword id="6621346" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Small-loans">small loans</keyword> impacted life in a big way, especially at the bottom of the pyramid, and the idea of Milaap came to his mind. Developing a crowd-funding platform to connect India’s underprivileged with prosperous individuals and <keyword id="2108906" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Institutional-lenders">institutional lenders</keyword> across the globe seemed the right way to go about it. Anoj, who knew Sourabh from 2006 when he interned at his previous start-up Microappli, got him and Mayukh together to give shape to the idea of Milaap, which finally went live in June 2010.

According to the social enterprise, less than 5% of them are able to procure reasonably priced, life-improving loans for their small businesses, vocational training or other essential household assets, and that’s where the ‘loans’ raised by Milaap come in . 
 
How it works: At Milaap, the work is done in two stages. One part is <keyword id="2108932" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shortlisting-borrowers">shortlisting borrowers</keyword> and publishing their profiles/projects on Milaap.org for crowd funding. Second part is deployment of the loans, monitoring their usage and ensuring timely repayments. Understandably, the second part is more cumbersome and requires a lot of offline work.  Lending online is quite simple, though. Browse through the profiles to choose a borrower or select one from an impact area that you feel strongly about. Claim to fame: The concept and the build-up. According to the co-founders, crowd-funding is still a niche concept in the country but it is gaining traction gradually. Till date, Milaap has raised and disbursed over Rs 8.4 crore in 8,633 loans, impacting more than 46,393 people across 11 states in India. Show me the money: While a borrower gets the entire sum offered by the lender, Milaap charges its field partners a 5% fee on the loans disbursed through them, to cover its operating costs. Its field partners, in turn, charge affordable interest from the end-borrower to meet their operating costs. Milaap also makes sure that all fees are disclosed upfront. 
 
Unlike many other ventures in this space, this social enterprise is a for-profit concern, but has not reached break-even yet. However, it has found some solid backers and already raised $1.1 million in Series A venture funding in May 2013. The money raised is being utilised for developing the online platform further and scaling up operations. “We want the number of lenders to go up to 100,000 in the next 18 months. That is the tipping point from where we can gather momentum and look at break-even,” adds Sourabh.
