Sensex, Nifty hit record high — these are the top movers in trade today

The <keyword id="7642806" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Key-Indian-equity-indices">key Indian equity indices</keyword> surged on Tuesday morning with the <keyword id="53232" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSE-sensex">BSE Sensex</keyword> gaining 400 points to trade well above the 40,000 mark. The <keyword id="2931774" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nifty50">Nifty50</keyword> on <keyword id="163439" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-National-Stock-Exchange">the National Stock Exchange</keyword> (NSE) also rose over 100 points to trade near the 11,800 mark. Banking, finance and auto stocks led the sector-wide gains in the Indian market. A positive trend in the Asian markets also supported the domestic indices. Around 10.35 a.m., Sensex was at 40,158.59, higher by 401.01 points or 1.01 per cent from its previous close of 39,757.58. It opened at 39,990.75 and has so far touched an intra-day high of 40,217.27 and a low of 39,952.79 points. Sensex jumps 450 points, Nifty above 11,800, bank stocks shine

Mumbai, Benchmark indices <keyword id="6484188" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="sensex">Sensex</keyword> and Nifty raced to fresh record highs on Wednesday as gains in financials, auto and IT shares helped markets extend their winning run for the sixth straight session. After a volatile session, the 30-share BSE Sensex closed up by 133.14 points or 0.28% at a record high of 47,746.22. The barometer scaled its all-time intra-day high of 47,807.85. The broad-based <keyword id="372424" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="NSE-Nifty">NSE Nifty</keyword> rose by 49.35 points or 0.35% to finish at its lifetime high of 13,981.95. It touched all-time peak of 13,997 in intra-day trade. Among major Sensex movers, Ultratech Cement rose over 4%, <keyword id="111876" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bajaj-Finance">Bajaj Finance</keyword> by 2.63% and Maruti by 2%. Mahindra and Mahindra, Tech Mahindra, HUL, Kotak Bank, HDFC Bank, <keyword id="6355199" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="reliance-industries">Reliance Industries</keyword> and <keyword id="106317" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Asian-Paints">Asian Paints</keyword> also finished in the green. After opening strong, the stock indices gave up gains due to profit booking by investors. However, positive trends in the European stocks helped the indices rebound and end at record levels. European stocks advanced on Wednesday as the UK approved the <keyword id="8904563" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19-vaccine">COVID-19 vaccine</keyword> developed by <keyword id="6409874" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="astrazeneca">AstraZeneca</keyword> and Oxford University. Britain has authorized use of a second COVID-19 vaccine, becoming the first country to greenlight an easy-to-handle shot that its developers hope will become the "vaccine for the world". Asian shares were mixed after a lackluster day on Wall Street. Benchmarks fell in Tokyo and Sydney but rallied in Hong Kong, Seoul and Shanghai. Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 0.5%, a day after it surged more than 2% to its highest level in more than 30 years. In Australia, the S&amp;P/ASX 200 lost 0.3%. On the other hand, Hong Kong's Hang Seng surged 1.6%, the Shanghai Composite index advanced 1% while South Korea's Kospi jumped 1.9%. Vaccine booster: Sensex ends 133 points higher, Nifty inches closer to 14,000 mark

The key Indian equity indices continued its recent bear run on Thursday with a gap-down opening. <keyword id="53232" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSE-sensex">BSE Sensex</keyword> plunged 575 points and the Nifty50 fell below the psychological mark of 11,000. Domestic indices were weighed down by a sell-off in the <keyword id="35189" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="asian-markets">Asian markets</keyword>. The sell-off in the Indian market was led by auto, consumer durables, metal and finance stocks. Around 10.10 a.m., Sensex was trading at 37,092.84, lower by 575.58 points or 1.53 per cent from its previous close of 37,668.42. It opened at 37,282.18 and has so far touched an intra-day high of 37,304.26 and a low of 37,058.79 The Nifty50 on the National Stock Exchange was trading at 10,961.65, lower by 170.20 points or 1.53 per cent from the previous close. Manish Hathiramani, technical analyst with <keyword id="1693325" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Deen-Dayal-Investments">Deen Dayal Investments</keyword> said: "The index continues to remain weak and any rally up can be used to short this market. 10,900-10,950 is a support range for the market so traders can book profits at the current juncture and use any opportunity to short the October series futures contract at higher levels for a target of 10,750. The resistance on the upside is at 11,300." The Supreme Court said that these telecom companies should pay 10% of the AGR-related dues by March 31. The shares of RIL and Airtel gained 2% and 7% respectively, after the Supreme Court judgement. However, Vodafone Idea shares lost nearly 10%. Bharti Infratel shares rise 3% Bharti Infratel shares gained nearly 3% after the board approved the long-delayed merger of Indus Towers. According to the BSE filing, Bharti Infratel will be a majority shareholder in the merged entity with a likely stake of 68.6%, whereas the London-listed Vodafone Group will hold around 28.2% of the stake. Escorts gains over 5% The shares of Escorts Motors gained nearly 5% on the back of blockbuster August sales data. The company has registered a whopping 80% growth in August tractor sales compared to the same period last year. The company further said it remains optimistic about further sales during the festive season. BEML and Tata Power gains ground BEML shares were up 4%, whereas Tata Power gained 2% after the company closed ₹2,580 crore deal with the Indian Defence Ministry for the procurement of Pinaka rocket launchers for six Army regiments. The contract has been signed with Tata Power Company Ltd (TPCL) and engineering major Larsen &amp; Toubro (L&amp;T) while defence public sector undertaking Bharat Earth Movers Ltd (BEML) will also be part of the project. Biocon gains 5% Biocon shares gained nearly 5% after its subsidiary along with Mylan NV, launched an insulin glargine injection Semglee in the US market. The company said ‘Semglee’ has received final approval from the US FDA and has an identical amino acid sequence to Sanofi’s Lantus, a drug that is used to control high blood sugar. Future Retail tumbles 9% Future Retail shares tumbled 9% after the Government Pension Fund Global, one of the world’s largest sovereign wealth funds sold 95 lakh shares at ₹158.61 per share. The Government Pension Fund Global fund held 2.28% stake in the Future Retail at the end of June. L&amp;T gained 2% L&amp;T shares gained nearly 2% during the early trading hours after the company closed the long-awaited strategic divestment of L&amp;T Electrical and Automation business to Schneider Electric for ₹14,000 crore. The L&amp;T deal was announced in May 2018 and took over 2 years to be completed after receiving the requisite regulatory approvals. ONGC tanks 4% ONGC shares tanked 4% ahead of the first quarterly earnings. During the meeting today the board will also consider the proposal of raising funds of up to ₹45,000 crore. Market hits record high, Sensex breaches 44,000 — these are the top movers today

<keyword id="9292761" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="equity-benchmark-sensex">Equity benchmark Sensex</keyword> rallied over 300 points in early trade to hit its fresh intra-day record on Thursday tracking gains in <keyword id="10371347" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="index-majors-hdfc-bank">index majors HDFC Bank</keyword>, Reliance Industries and Maruti amid largely positive cues from global markets. After scaling a peak of 44,953.01, the 30-share BSE index was trading 176.87 points or 0.40 per cent higher at 44,794.91. Similarly, the <keyword id="10338236" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="broader-nse-nifty">broader NSE Nifty</keyword> touched a peak of 13,216.60 before trading 59.05 points or 0.45 per cent up at 13,172.80. Tata Steel was the top gainer in the Sensex pack, rising around 2 per cent, followed by Maruti, ONGC, HDFC Bank, Tech Mahindra, L&amp;T, HCL Tech and SBI. On the other hand, Axis Bank, Infosys, TCS, Bharti Airtel and M&amp;M were among the laggards. In the previous session, Sensex finished at 44,618.04, down 37.40 points or 0.08 per cent, while the Nifty edged higher by 4.70 points or 0.04 per cent to end at its fresh closing record of 13,113.75. Foreign institutional investors were net buyers in the capital market as they purchased shares worth Rs 357.35 crore on a net basis on Wednesday, according to provisional exchange data. Domestic markets look to be relatively better than yesterday at the moment. However, the market may trade sideways ahead of the outcome of Reserve Bank's policy meet, said Binod Modi, Head-Strategy at Reliance Securities. Having witnessed sharp run over last one-month, Nifty valuations appear to be stretched and any negative development may lead to a sharp sell-off, he said, adding that midcap and small-cap stocks should continue to outperform large caps in the near term due to improved earnings visibility and wider valuations gap. "US equities closed modestly higher led by improved prospects of announcement of fiscal stimulus before the year end. "Statement from the House Majority leader that Congress hopes to reach an agreement on a fiscal package over the weekend and likely to vote on it next week lifted sentiments. However, the quantum of fiscal stimulus would be something, which the market would be keenly watching out for," he added. Elsewhere in Asia, bourses in Hong Kong, Tokyo and Seoul were trading with gains in mid-session deals, while Shanghai was in the red. Meanwhile, the global oil benchmark Brent crude futures were trading 0.10 per cent higher at USD 48.30 per barrel. Sensex rallies over 300 points to scale fresh intra-day peak; Nifty tops 13,200

Morgan Stanley has said that the stocks have peaked and the returns may not be as exciting in the next 3-6 months. Rising inflation both in the US and India may hurt Indian stock markets. The analysts at Morgan Stanley said that they expect the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to increase interest rates in February 2022. Inflation has been a cause of concern for many companies this earnings season including consumer goods giants — including Marico, Nestle, Hindustan Unilever, Britannia and Parle to name a few ⁠— that may have to pass on more price hikes if inflation remains high. In fact, consumer product companies are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/retail/news/profit-margin-of-britannia-declines-in-q2-of-fy-2022/articleshow/87600806.cms">unable to hike prices</a> to cover the entire rise in costs and that has led to shrinking margins for many. The risk of a mutant virus that is resistant to vaccines is the biggest downside risk, as it might leave the government no choice but to roll out new mobility restrictions, say analysts at UBS. More restrictions would mean several pockets of the economy would be forced to halt physical operations leading to slowdown in economic activity. What could turn the tide in India’s favour? A correction in the market typically means either a fall in prices or they remain stagnant or rangebound for a while. The latter is also called ‘time correction’. But there could be other factors that could come into play too. For instance, India has been pushing to get its bonds included in the global indices. UBS emerging markets strategist Rohit Arora has said that it is possible in early 2022 while Bloomberg has noted that these decisions are usually announced in September. Small investors ahoy! Global investment banks are telling their clients to take profits from India

In a recent note, he said that after 30 months of struggle, Indian mid and small-cap stocks are poised for outperformance on the back of growth recovery and attractive valuations. The Morgan Stanley report dated August 18 said the small and mid-cap (SMID) stocks went into a prolonged phase of underperformance after peaking in early January 2018. Between the end of 2017 and March 2020, the SMID indices were down more than 40% relative to the equity benchmark Sensex due to various reasons such as growth deceleration and relative valuations. “The COVID-19 related lockdown did not help matters but has marked a floor on the cohort’s relative performance as a forward-looking stock market is possibly anticipating better growth. With monetary aggregates normalizing and significant policy action underway with a corporate tax cut last September, we think growth is set to turn,” the report said.
