Ten years later, the seed stage fund has raised a new $60 million fund and is moving beyond just backing female founders to any entrepreneur from a diverse background."This is not about abandoning women, but expanding our mandate to back a diverse founding team," Lyne told Business Insider.Founders from diverse backgrounds have taken a hit amid the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/venture-capital-funding-crunch-will-continue-2024-2023-12">funding slump in venture capital.</a> In the first half of 2024, Black-founded US startups received $228 million in funding — or about .3% of the nearly $79 billion that went to U.S.-based startups, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://news.crunchbase.com/diversity/black-founded-startup-venture-funding-fearless/">according to Crunchbase data.</a> The dollar total is a 60% drop from the first half of 2023. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/30-best-women-early-stage-seed-vc-investors-startups-2023-5">Lyne</a> and Dua teamed up at AOL in 2014 to create a $10 million fund, BBG, to back female founders and invested early in Spring Health, which was mostly recently <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.springhealth.com/news/fortune-exclusive-ai-powered-mental-health-startup-boosts-valuation">valued at $3.3 billion,</a> and toy brand KiwiCo.When <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/verizon-to-buy-aol-2015-5">Verizon bought AOL</a> in 2015, BBG Ventures separated and raised a new $50 million fund. For the first time, it raised capital from institutional investors, including the State of Michigan Retirement Services and Illumen Capital. Investments include genAI startup Topline Pro and skincare company Starface.Dua said that these LPs returned to back their newest fund and also increased their commitments. New investors in the fun include Fairview Capital, Pivotal Ventures, California Endowment, and Mizuho. Previous investors Nordstrom, Verizon, and Bank of America also invested in the $60 million fund.Dua explained that the decision to move beyond exclusively backing just female founders reflects the duo's shift in thesis around innovation. "There are underrepresented groups around not just gender but also race, age, and income," said Dua.She emphasized that female founders are still a huge focus area but that the firm is excited to back strong, underrepresented founders in healthcare, fintech, and the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-startups-rapid-funding-rounds-2024-9">investment area nearly all VCs clamoring to back:</a> AI. The new fund has already backed an AI recruiting startup for hourly workers, UpWage.BBG isn't becoming an AI-focused firm anytime soon though, Dua cautioned. "Some funds are building a portfolio of just AI companies," she said. "That's not us." She highlighted a recent investment out of the new fund in Nara, a startup that has created an FDA-approved, certified organic whole milk formula. "It's important for us to be circumspect where AI can drive growth in certain startups," added Dua.For Dua and Lyne, being an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jordan-wan-cofound-partners-emerging-manager-fund-2023-10">emerging fund manager and raising a new fund</a> is "not easy." "The vast majority of VC funding this year goes to a very small pool of funds, and sub-$100 million funds have a tougher time raising," said Lyne. She added because of the competition to raise funds from LPs, many funds are taking longer to make decisions and waiting to see what returns a fund makes before investing again."Many of our LPs believe in impact and trying to broaden access to capital," said Lyne. "We raised more than our last fund, and I think it's validation of our thesis."

BBG Ventures raises $60 million for its latest fund and moves beyond just backing female founders 

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Nikhil Teja Kolli's startup MokSa.ai uses AI-enabled security cameras to curb theft and fraud.</li><li>Since its launch a year ago, MokSa.ai has garnered over 70 customers and $240,000 in ARR.</li></ul>When he was a college student in Kansas, Nikhil Teja Kolli worked a night shift at a convenience store on the edge of the Ozarks. One night, a man lingered inside the store until the other customers cleared out, then approached the counter with a gun stretched in Kolli's direction. The gunman swiped the cash in the drawer and left Kolli frozen. He felt helpless to stop it.Eight months later, he would be held at gunpoint again.He couldn't have known it then, but Kolli would go on to start a business focused on mitigating theft.His startup MokSa.ai, which aims to help <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/retailers-using-tech-to-combat-theft-at-self-checkouts-2023-11">businesses curb theft</a> and employee fraud using artificial intelligence-enabled security cameras, launched from stealth less than a year ago. But it already has a raft of paying customers, which is rare among startups of its size. According to Kolli, its real-time monitoring system is in use at over 70 gas stations, liquor stores, and bodegas nationwide and is generating $20,000 a month in recurring revenue.Now, this potent cocktail of machine learning and profits has persuaded investors to provide it with pre-seed funding. MokSa.ai tells Business Insider it closed $1.5 million in a March round led by Array Ventures, with participation from Jay Farner, the former chief executive of Quicken Loans, and The Fund Midwest.The company uses computer vision to automate away some parts of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/walmarts-anti-theft-technology-is-effective-but-involves-confronting-customers-2023-10">surveillance</a> still done by humans. It makes software for off-the-shelf security cameras that detect suspicious activity — think, a person stuffs a six-pack of beer in their pants or a cashier gives away merchandise to a friend — and sends a real-time notification to the customer dashboard. The alert includes a clip of the incident, which saves the business owner time they might spend playing back hours of camera footage.<div type="image" title="MokSa.ai uses general-use models and customizes them to detect suspicious activity at store locations." height="1123" width="794" msid="109508830" hostid="261" sizebytes="64550"></div>Kolli said the company initially tried to use open-source, pre-trained artificial intelligence models but found that some of these models showed biases representative of the datasets they were trained on. It then tried fine-tuning those models, but Kolli said their performance fell apart. Eventually, it landed on using general-use models that continuously learn as new footage comes in.The company also pays college interns in India to watch footage for suspicious activity and annotate it — a process called data labeling."As we sit and speak, there is new data coming in and these models are getting better," Kolli said.According to Shruti Gandhi, the founder and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solo-general-partners-raising-outside-capital-2020-1">sole general partner</a> at Array Ventures, part of MokSa.ai's magic is its customized models for this use case."The data sets they have gathered in the last two years of being a services company allowed them to deploy trained models in customers from their first week of onboarding," she said. "That is not possible today with a lot of business intelligence companies because most think they're going to get better once they have customer data. So the reason some companies will win over others in the same category is their access to unique, differentiated data."Given that MokSa.ai's software works with a range of internet-connected security cameras, it's positioned itself as the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/epic-games-google-fortnite-ruling-play-store-apple-lawsuit-trial-2023-12">Android</a> of the surveillance market. The company will also provide a business with the cameras it needs in exchange for signing a multiyear contract. It charges a monthly subscription that scales based on the number of cameras in use.Customers can pay extra to have an operator call them when the system detects an event, and that's as far as MokSa.ai's responsibility goes, Kolli said. It won't contact the police."We are offering surveillance audit platform," he said. "So it's up to the customer to understand what they want to do with that information we provide."<div type="image" title="The dashboard shows reports of suspicious activity at a glance." height="833" width="1428" msid="109508831" hostid="261" sizebytes="60338"></div><h2>The Android of the surveillance market</h2>Before MokSa.ai, Kolli worked as a quality manager at a company producing parts for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-high-speed-rail-projects-acela-brightline-upcoming-future-2023-6">high-speed rails</a>. He got the itch to build this company after speaking to a friend who owned the gas station and liquor store where he worked in college. The friend had found out an employee had stolen thousands of dollars worth of merchandise and cash and he asked Kolli how technology might be able to catch bad actors. The idea planted the seed for what would become MokSa.ai.Later, Kolli enrolled in the startup accelerator <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-techstars-is-looking-for-in-startup-applications-during-downturn-2023-5">Techstars</a> Detroit, where one of his mentors introduced him to his future investor.Kolli told Gandhi the MokSa.ai story over the phone. He didn't have a pitch deck to show her or any other investor pledges to move her to act. But, the Array Ventures founder bought into the round before the call ended. The next day, Kolli had a term sheet.The investment was a "no-brainer," Gandhi said.The company is now gearing up for growth. MokSa.ai just signed a contract with Royal Ozarks, a large commercial real-estate developer in the South, to deploy its system across 150 store locations. Kolli said the partnership will bring its $240,000 annual recurring revenue to over $1 million this year.The new funding will allow the company to grow its sales and customer support teams as part of this expansion. It's also working to release a mobile app that will allow business owners to view their notifications on the go.In its bid to create a smarter surveillance system, MokSa.ai faces competition from startups like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/security-company-says-3-3-3-perk-good-for-business-2024-2">Verkada, a maker of building security tools</a> that's raised over $360 million in funding, and Rhombus, a newer entrant that just announced $26 million in capital. While these two tout their abilities to detect suspicious activity and send alerts, they both require customers to use their cameras and sensors.That could be the wedge that gives MokSa.ai a chance despite being much younger than its competitors.Gandhi summed it up, "What they're saying is keep your camera, we will figure out the best way to use this camera."

This comes after Jha stepped down from the board of the cash-strapped startup Dunzo last year. QA involves creating and running tests, identifying errors, and providing feedback to ensure products meet quality standards. <h2>What happened with Dunzo?</h2>The delivery startup Dunzo delivers essential goods like groceries, household items, fruits and vegetables, pet supplies, pharmaceuticals etc to people locally. Despite raising around $500 million, Dunzo has struggled to secure additional investment and manage payroll. In February, there were rumors that Flipkart might acquire the platform, but there have been no updates on this matter since. Dunzo, on the other hand, was making headlines earlier this year for facing various financial struggles. The company’s top investor Lightbox also exited in May this year. On the other hand, the company is reportedly experiencing a cash crunch and owes approximately Rs 11.4 crore to various vendors, including Google India, Nilenso, Clover Ventures, Facebook India, Cupshup, Koo, and Glance. <h2>About Together Fund</h2>Together Fund, from which Jha is reportedly going to raise funds for his new venture, has invested in over 20 companies across various SaaS sectors, including recruitment, sales intelligence, marketing, healthcare, and cloud solutions for connected devices. “Our areas of focus span across SaaS, enterprise software, developer tools, open source software, cloud-native infrastructure and API-first businesses. We typically invest early (seed, pre A or series A) to help founders through the crucial zero-to-one part of their journey,” the company’s website reads. Together Fund was founded in 2021 by Girish Mathrubootham of Freshworks, Manav Garg of Eka Software, and Shubham Gupta formerly of Matrix Partners India. It sparks both excitement and fear, as creators and industry professionals reckon with AI tools that make some creative tasks easier but ultimately <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-ugc-ads-gone-viral-but-wont-replace-humans-influencers-2024-5">could displace work</a>.A new tech startup called Dreamwell AI has its sights set on using AI to make influencer marketing run more efficiently.Dreamwell's AI tools help brands automate tasks like finding influencers to work with, assessing their value in terms of audience and potential engagement rate, and sending out cold emails to discuss paying them for a sponsored post. First, a brand looking to run an influencer campaign on the platform enters criteria for the type of audience it wants to reach, such as targeting a particular age group or gender, as well as how much it's willing to pay each creator. Dreamwell then identifies up to 1,000 prospective influencers on apps like Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and LinkedIn. The company doesn't have direct relationships with most of those talent, but instead tracks down contact information to email prospective creators so a brand can begin a negotiation. A company can automate the entire discovery and outreach process, or manually select different creators that match its audience criteria for a campaign."First and foremost, we try to understand what's the value of this creator," Khazaal said. Khazaal said. While Dreamwell uses OpenAI to support tasks like summarizing or categorizing data, it built its own model, Khazaal said: "We have our own database. We have our own model that we built. We have proprietary data."Prashant Matta, a general partner at Panache Ventures, told BI he was drawn to Dreamwell's granularity of data and AI-generated insights, which he viewed as unique to the company.Khazaal, who has also worked as a creator himself (he has around half a million YouTube subscribers), said having a track record of real revenue was also key to winning over investors."I would recommend to any startup founder, go get your revenue," he said. "Make the story make sense and get to at least six figures in annual recurring revenue."

Nearly 88 per cent of the investments made by Alternative Investment Funds (<keyword id="1006423" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="aifs" source="Orion">AIFs</keyword>) under the Startups <keyword id="3483659" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ffs" source="Orion">FFS</keyword> (Fund for Funds) Scheme have gone to five states. <keyword id="6354780" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="karnataka" source="Orion">Karnataka</keyword> has topped the list of states with an investment of Rs 4,687 crore out of the total investment of Rs 14,077 crore spread across the country. The Fund of Funds for Startups (FFS) Scheme was approved and established in 2016 with a corpus of Rs 10,000 crore, with contribution spread over the 14th and 15th Finance Commission cycle based on progress of implementation, to provide a much-needed boost to the Indian startup ecosystem and enable access to domestic capital. As on December 31, 2022, under FFS, Rs 7,980 crore has been committed to 99 AIFs and Rs 3,400 crore has been disbursed to 72 AIFs which have in turn made investments of Rs 14,077 crore in 791 startups. The government data said that while Karnataka got an investment of Rs 4687 crore for 240 startups under the scheme, Maharashtra's 176 startups received an investment of Rs 3,426 crore and Delhi's 138 startups got Rs 2,254 crore. Similarly, in Haryana 60 startups received an investment of Rs 1,148 crore and in <keyword id="20154" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tamil-nadu" source="Orion">Tamil Nadu</keyword>, 29 startups got an investment of Rs 826 crore. Under FFS, the Scheme does not directly invest in startups, instead it provides capital to SEBI-registered Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs), known as daughter funds, who in turn invest money in growing Indian startups through equity and equity-linked instruments. The <keyword id="104385" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="small-industries-development-bank-of-india" source="Orion">Small Industries Development Bank of India</keyword> (SIDBI) has been given the mandate of operating this Fund through selection of suitable daughter funds and overseeing the disbursal of committed capital. AIFs supported under FFS are required to invest at least two times of the amount committed under FFS in startups. The Government with an intent to build a strong ecosystem for nurturing innovation, startups and encouraging private investments in the startup ecosystem of the country launched Startup India initiative on January 16, 2016. The flagship Schemes including Fund of Funds for Startups (FFS), <keyword id="9949511" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="startup-india-seed-fund-scheme" source="Orion">Startup India Seed Fund Scheme</keyword> (SISFS) and Credit Guarantee Scheme for Startups (CGSS) support startups at various stages of their business cycle to enable startups to graduate to a level where they are able to raise investments from angel investors or venture capitalists or seek loans from commercial banks or financial institutions. Officials said that over 50 regulatory reforms have been undertaken by the Government since 2016 to enhance ease of doing business, ease of raising capital and reduce compliance burden for the startup ecosystem. Besides, to enable ease of procurement, Central Ministries and Departments have been directed to relax conditions of prior turnover and prior experience in public procurement for all DPIIT recognised startups subject to meeting quality and technical specifications. Further, Government e-Marketplace (GeM) Startup Runway has been developed which is a dedicated corner for startups to sell products and services directly to the Government. The Government also implements flagship annual exercises and programs including States' Startup Ranking, National Startup Awards and Innovation Week which play an important role in holistic development of the startup ecosystem. The Government also facilitates participation and engagement of the Indian startup ecosystem at international platforms.
