Forget the metro or the latest speed giants roaring across Indian roads. Come Saturday (February 1) and India’s financial capital will be rolling out the country’s first-ever <keyword id="64918" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Monorail">monorail</keyword>, connecting the central suburb of <keyword id="157686" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Wadala">Wadala</keyword> to <keyword id="6366202" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Chembur">Chembur</keyword> on the eastern outskirts of Mumbai and covering a distance of 8.93 km across seven stations in about 21 minutes. Currently, it takes around 40 minutes to cover this stretch. 
 <keyword id="81878" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mumbai-monorail">Mumbai monorail</keyword> will be formally inaugurated by <keyword id="26806" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Maharashtra-Chief-Minister">Maharashtra Chief Minister</keyword> <keyword id="6356262" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Prithviraj-Chavan">Prithviraj Chavan</keyword> on Saturday afternoon and the commute will be open for the masses from Sunday onwards. The two-phase project costs around Rs 3,000 crore and the second phase linking Wadala to <keyword id="2039948" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sant-Gadge-Maharaj-Chowk">Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk</keyword> (popularly known as <keyword id="2039952" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Saath-Rasta">Saath Rasta</keyword> and originally called <keyword id="2039957" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jacobs-Circle">Jacob’s Circle</keyword>) in south Mumbai will be operational within a year. 
 As of now, tickets are priced between Rs 5 and Rs 11 and a <keyword id="359126" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="100" keywordseo="smart-card-system">smart card system</keyword> is already in place, but there will be no <keyword id="2039963" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Season-pass">season pass</keyword>. The seven stations on the Phase-I route include Chembur, <keyword id="2039964" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="VN-Purav/RC-Marg-Junction">VN Purav/RC Marg Junction</keyword>, <keyword id="2039965" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Fertilizer-Township">Fertilizer Township</keyword>, <keyword id="75662" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bharat-Petroleum">Bharat Petroleum</keyword>, <keyword id="1351055" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mysore-Colony">Mysore Colony</keyword>, <keyword id="683956" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bhakti-Park">Bhakti Park</keyword> and <keyword id="6537145" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Wadala-Depot">Wadala Depot</keyword>. When the entire corridor starts working, tickets will cost Rs 5-19, across a total of 19 stations. 
 The monorail project has been executed by engineering major <keyword id="45475" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Larsen-Toubro">Larsen &amp; Toubro</keyword> and Malaysian firm <keyword id="1563400" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Scomi-Engineering">Scomi Engineering</keyword>. It is owned and operated by <keyword id="64095" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mumbai-Metropolitan-Region-Development-Authority">Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority</keyword> (<keyword id="48470" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="MMRDA">MMRDA</keyword>), which has already spent Rs 1,900 crore on both the phases. The civil work on the second phase has been completed as well. 
 Construction for the Chembur-Wadala-Jacob Circle (Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk) route – a total distance of 19.17 km – started back in 2009 and was scheduled to be completed in April 2011. But the project got delayed for more than 2.5 years and only the <keyword id="2039976" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Wadala-Chembur">Wadala-Chembur</keyword> section could be completed in the first phase. With the entire stretch becoming operational, it will be the <keyword id="2039979" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Worlds-second-longest-monorail">world’s second longest monorail</keyword> corridor, after <keyword id="6355311" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Japan">Japan</keyword>’s Osaka Monorail (23.8 km). Apart from Japan, other countries running monorails include <keyword id="1334" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="China">China</keyword>, <keyword id="8695" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Malaysia">Malaysia</keyword>, the <keyword id="6354458" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="US">US</keyword>, <keyword id="87" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Germany">Germany</keyword> and <keyword id="6355478" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Australia">Australia</keyword>. 
 
Mumbai monorail is going to be a colourful affair, flaunting green, pink and blue. It will be able to peak to 80 km/hour while the average speed has been set at 65 km/hour. Initially, six trains will run from 7 in the morning till 3 in the afternoon. But from March onwards, it will function 19 hours a day and the train frequency will improve as well – from 15 minutes to nine and finally to three-four minutes. As of now, each train has 4 air-conditioned coaches and can carry as many as 560 passengers. After the second phase is commissioned, there will be 10 more trains with six coaches each and a total of 19 stations. 
 But will the monorail be an essential part of our daily commute once the novelty wears off? It is bound to bring some much-needed relief to Mumbaikars, struggling to cope with traffic snarls on a daily basis. But to make the good work really effective, the second phase should be completed at the earliest. One also wonders if the authorities will consider starting a <keyword id="2039974" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Second-monorail-project">second monorail project</keyword> in and around Mumbai as was originally planned. Experts feel that the need for an expanded monorail corridor may arise after all the proposed metro rail routes are commissioned and there is further requirement for a seamless <keyword id="457467" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="feeder-service">feeder service</keyword>. And when that happens, the people of Mumbai are bound to have a completely hassle-free commute.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>I traveled by train from London to Berlin and back, taking the Eurostar as well as a sleeper train.</li><li>Door-to-door the journey there took nearly 24 hours, including a few hours' layover in Brussels.</li></ul>Last month I traveled by train from London to Berlin and back.It's not an experience I plan to repeat.A new sleeper service launched in Europe in May, shipping passengers between Brussels and Berlin. I decided to test the European Sleeper out, and paired it with a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/eurostar-train-journey-london-amsterdam-photos-review-price-speed-tunnel-2022-6">Eurostar</a> from London to get me to Belgium in the first place.Some travelers are choosing to make their trips more sustainable by avoiding flights wherever possible and instead opting for long-distance trains, coaches, and car-sharing apps. France and Austria have even banned some short-haul flights.I'm no stranger to public transport. I took the train to and from my high school in the UK for seven years, took the six-hour coach journey between Newcastle and Liverpool many times, and spent a year studying in Germany where I traveled on its network of trains, trams, and buses.But a sleeper train was completely new to me. My longest train journey had been five or six hours.I arrived at London's St. Pancras Station after a 30-minute rush-hour tube journey, breezed through the security checks, and boarded the 9:01 a.m. Eurostar train to Brussels. But due to a security incident at Lille, the two-hour journey ended up taking four-and-a-half hours. I spent the time reading, writing, and napping. By the time I arrived in Brussels, it was around 2:30 p.m. local time.<div type="image" title="A photo showing an open door on a Eurostar carr" height="3468" width="4624" msid="102452908" hostid="261" sizebytes="534160"></div>I'd never been to Brussels before and wanted to use this trip as an opportunity to explore the Belgian capital, so I had deliberately booked my two trains – each with a different provider – with a six-hour layover there. The Eurostar delay cut into a lot of this, but I'm glad I left myself with plenty of wriggle room in case of journey disruptions. I also enjoyed the opportunity to stretch my legs, even if I did spent most of my time in Brussels in the line for a must-visit cheese-sandwich shop.I headed back to the station for the second leg of the journey, this time the 6:01 p.m. European Sleeper, headed for Berlin. Because of the Schengen Agreement, I didn't have to go through security checks and could just rock up to the platform and board the train.I'd decided to book their lowest-price ticket, which was a seat in a six-person compartment rather than a bed. The interior of the compartment seemed a bit dated – I was surprised to find there was nowhere to charge my phone – but at least I had plenty of space, I thought.I was wrong.Two passengers got on at Antwerp, an hour into the journey. Then, three more got on at Amsterdam at around 9:30 p.m., and our compartment was full.I'm glad I brought food with me – I couldn't see any information on board about where to buy food and overhead a member of staff telling a passenger that the card machine was broken. I'd set 10:30 p.m. as my bedtime. I knew my train would get in before 7 a.m. and I had a busy day in Berlin coming up. I brushed my teeth in one of the small sink-only rooms on the train and used the restroom. Most of the bathrooms on the train were out of order, some of the passengers were saying.<div type="image" title="The corridor on board the European Sleeper train, showing a row of doors and windows" height="3468" width="4624" msid="102452913" hostid="261" sizebytes="839814"></div>I put in my ear plugs, got out my travel pillow, took a sleeping pill, and put on my eye mask. And slept.Or at least, that's what should have happened. Instead, I had one of the worst night's sleep of my life.It seemed to be impossible to get comfy on the train's rigid seats. The people in the compartment next door were talking loudly and we were crammed like sardines with very little leg room, meaning that we woke each other up whenever we left the compartment. Though there were only eight passenger stops between Brussels and Berlin, the train stopped many more times than this. I would drift off to sleep for 20 minutes, only to wake up and be unable to settle again.I noticed that someone had disappeared from our compartment. I presumed he had maybe found an emptier compartment to rest in. Later, I discovered that he had actually resorted to sleeping in the corridor instead.We pulled into Berlin at around 6:30 a.m., slightly ahead of schedule."How did you sleep?" I asked the woman next to me."So-so," she said.In all, I estimate I got around three hours' sleep. Like a true Brit abroad, I arrived in the German capital desperate for a cup of tea. I'd left my apartment at 7:20 a.m. on Wednesday and arrived at my hostel at around 7 a.m. on Thursday – a nearly 24-hour journey if you account for the change in time zone. From the time I arrived at St. Pancras to my arrival time at Berlin's station, it took close to 23 hours.Despite my lack of sleep, I powered on ahead with my busy day of exploring, but I definitely would have enjoyed my time more if I'd been better rested.<div type="image" title="A cathedral in Berlin and the Berliner Fernsehturm in the background" height="2223" width="4447" msid="102452917" hostid="261" sizebytes="877620"></div>There are other train and bus providers taking passengers between Brussels and Berlin. But these journeys all required at least one change, and the quickest still took more than seven hours. At least by taking an overnight train, I wouldn't be wasting precious daylight hours of my trip just sat on a train.The journey back a few days later was equally lacking in sleep. I took the 10:56 p.m. European Sleeper from Berlin, and after my busy weekend I expected to sleep like a log. But the bed I had booked had been downgraded to a seat because of problems with the train's toilets and electricity supply, and once again I found myself unable to sleep.In my compartment I was joined by a family of four, and felt like I was intruding on their vacation. They struggled to sleep, too: The mother ended up sleeping on the floor between the two rows of seats in our compartment. I followed her lead and tried to do the same, but it didn't work for me.Some passengers struggled to find their seats because the carriages weren't in numerical order, and multiple bathrooms were out of order.<div type="image" title="A photo showing a sink cubicle on the European Sleeper train" height="3468" width="4624" msid="102452918" hostid="261" sizebytes="315442"></div>I repeated my routine: Ear plugs, travel pillow, sleeping pill, and eye mask. And yet again, I got less than five hours' sleep by the time the train pulled in shortly before 11. a.m..But at least this time I had a proper layover in Brussels. I had around six hours to look around the city, and this was enough time to justifying paying the nine euros (about $10) to leave my big backpack in a locker at the station.The Eurostar journey back was much more pleasant. I ended up getting a Standard Premier seat, which was only £10 (about $13) more than a regular seat, and included a meal and a smaller carriage.<div type="image" title="A seat on the Eurostar with the table extended" height="3468" width="4624" msid="102452921" hostid="261" sizebytes="600832"></div>There were definitely some perks to traveling from London to Berlin by train compared to flying. I didn't have to pay extra for my bags and I could bring as many liquids as I wanted. The layover meant that I had the chance to explore Brussels, too. And it was also massively better for the environment.But it was slower and more expensive. Low-budget airlines like Ryanair offer return flights between London and Berlin for under $100, and they're less than two hours each way. Yes, you do have to factor in how airports are outside the city center, taking a while to get to, and often transport providers add an <a href="https://tfl.gov.uk/info-for/media/press-releases/2022/september/journeys-that-start-or-end-at-heathrow-and-involve-zone-1-will-become-peak-fares">airport surcharge</a>, but for journeys like this where there is no direct Eurostar route they're still much more convenient.<div type="image" title="The exterior of a European Sleeper train" height="3468" width="4624" msid="102453055" hostid="261" sizebytes="743934"></div>In total, my four train journeys cost me around $650, though I'm set to get around $180 in refunds to cover the Eurostar delay and the European Sleeper downgrade.Overall, my journey was tainted by an unfortunate set of circumstances: The Eurostar being delayed, not having a bed on either sleeper train, and many of the bathrooms being broken.If I'd traveled a week later, I may have had an entirely different experience.

Russia plans to build a new high speed railway, with trains that would speed from Moscow to Beijing in just 48 hours.
At the moment, it takes about seven days to commute between the two cities and the route requires changes.&#xa0;
According to Romanian website <a href="http://acs-rss.ro/index.php/arhiva-glasul/item/42-tgv-ul-transsiberian-va-lega-vestul-europei-de-coasta-pacificului-in-48-de-ore" target="_blank">Glasul</a>, the Kremlin has awarded the project to China Railway High-speed (CRH), a subsidiary of the state-controlled China Railway (CR), which is working in a joint-venture with the local firm Uralvagonzavod.
CR is famous in the train industry for operating the world's only magnetic levitation train in an urban area, <a href="http://youtu.be/83TVw2CJxhk" target="_blank">the Shangai monorail</a>.
Previously, Russia had commissioned a French firm, Alstom, for the first work on the rail line between Moscow and Kazan.
Alstom is one of the leading high speed train manufacturers in the world: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1iaXEgvVmNA" target="_blank">in 2007 they set up a new record for conventional-wheeled high speed trains</a>, speeding up at 574 km/h (357 mph).&#xa0;It also <a href="http://www.alstom.com/press-centre/2014/11/alstom-delivered-the-final-citadis-tram-to-nottingham/" target="_blank">operates the urban tram line in Nottingham</a>.
But <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/hollande-puts-delivery-of-the-mistral-warship-to-russia-on-hold-2014-11" target="_blank">since France did not deliver its order of Mistral ships in late November this year</a>, it appears the Russian government took it personally and decided to switch that branch of the construction of the high speed railway to CRH, which is now in charge of the whole line, from Moscow to Beijing.

The Moscow-to-Beijing direct route will measure about 7,000 km (4,340 miles), effectively three times further than the longest high speed railway in the world, the Beijing to Guangzhou train, which is also operated by CRH (in red, above).&#xa0;
Glasul reports that the new railway is a top priority for both the Chinese and Russian governments, having been discussed directly by the prime ministers of the two countries, Dmitri Medvedev and Li Keqiang, in recent bilateral meetings.
Glasul writes that other supporters include the German automobile corporations, Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes, which are all more than keen to speed up the shipping of their vehicles from China to Europe.
The new route will probably replace <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/trans-siberian-railroad-photos-2014-2?op=1" target="_blank">the mighty Trans-Siberian railway</a>,&#xa0;connecting St. Petersburg to Vladivostok (the blue line in the map above).&#xa0;
Firstly, the old route doesn't go through Kazan, a city that in recent years has become more and more central to the Russian economy.
Secondly, and more importantly, it takes about 15 days to travel the Trans-Siberian route from start to finish, which compared to 48 hours for the new line, sounds like a heck of a long time.
