New Delhi, Jul 3 () Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu held discussions with officials on Friday on various options for conducting the proceedings of the Upper House during the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament, as only 127 members can be accommodated in the main hall and galleries while following physical-distancing norms. Sources said a limited virtual participation is also being considered as an option. The chamber and the galleries of the Rajya Sabha can accommodate 127 members while adhering to physical-distancing norms, the sources said. All the galleries except the media gallery would be utilised for the seating of members, the sources said, adding that the seating arrangements for mediapersons in the media gallery would also be in conformity with physical-distancing norms for which guidelines would be evolved. The secretary general and other senior officials of the Rajya Sabha Secretariat participated in the hour-long deliberations, during which various options were discussed, the sources said. The broad position that emerged was making seating arrangements for 127 members in the chamber and galleries of the House, in conformity with physical-distancing norms, and making provisions for the remaining members to participate in the proceedings virtually from either the Central Hall or the Balayogi Auditorium on the Parliament House premises, the sources added. A limited virtual participation is being considered in view of the capacity constraints of the NIC at present, they added. At the meeting, Naidu reiterated the need to upscale capacities for a larger virtual Parliament in due course. He suggested that the effort shall be to enable participation of the members in the proceedings from within the House to the extent possible through appropriate planning. Given the limited seating capacity of 127 members in the chamber and galleries, Naidu directed the officials of the Secretariat to draw up appropriate plans for seating, based on the strength of various parties in the House, or any other effective criteria like preparing a list of the participants in the proceedings of the House for the day, who would be accommodated accordingly, the sources pointed out. Issues relating to taking up the Question Hour, voting in the House if required, administering oath or affirmation to the newly-elected members, a detailed planning for the transportation of members, effective measures for physical distancing and sanitisation were also discussed at the meeting. The chairman directed the officials to submit a detailed action plan for further consideration by early next week. Friday's review, the sources said, was aimed at enabling the Rajya Sabha Secretariat to be in a position to execute the best possible option of holding the proceedings by preparing for the same and take necessary actions whenever the government decides to hold the Monsoon Session of Parliament. The domestic air passenger traffic reached 1232.45 lakhs in 2022, registering an annual growth of 47.05 per cent as compared to 2021, the <keyword id="6354705" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="directorate-general-of-civil-aviation" source="Orion">Directorate General of Civil Aviation</keyword> (<keyword id="6354787" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="dgca" source="Orion">DGCA</keyword>) said on Thursday. "Passengers carried by domestic airlines between January 2022 and December 2022 were 1232.45 lakhs as against 838.14 lakhs during the corresponding period of the previous year thereby registering an annual growth of 47.05 per cent and monthly growth of 13.69 per cent," the aviation regulator said. Domestic air passenger traffic went up by 47% this year compared to 2021: DGCA

When the <keyword id="1700843" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="singapore-airlines-group" source="Orion">Singapore Airlines Group</keyword> (SIA) released its operating statistics for December 2022, it revealed that it carried almost 12 per cent more passengers compared with a month ago and four times more than a year ago. Its two carriers, SIA and Scoot, carried a total of 2.7 million passengers in December. For the entire year, it carried a total of 20.7 million passengers, a jump of 900 per cent from 2021. The airline cited the relaxation of travel restrictions in Hong Kong, Japan, and Taiwan for boosting the demand for air travel and supporting a recovery in those markets. Though impressive, the passenger numbers are still 76 per cent of December 2019's figure of 3.54 million passengers carried. SIA's passenger load factor (PLF) in December 2022 came in at 89.7 per cent during the month -- 3.8 percentage points more compared with a month ago and 43.2 per centage points more year-on-year. The airline noted that this is the highest monthly PLF in the SIA's history, full-service carrier, SIA, and low-cost airline, Scoot posted record monthly PLFs of 89.1 per cent and 91.6 per cent respectively. PLF for December 2019 was 87.6 per cent. However, it should be noted that PLF is a function of the number of planes an airline has in service. During this period where there's a global shortage of capacity, some <keyword id="44023" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="airlines" source="Orion">airlines</keyword> under utilise their planes either to keep airfares high or because they do not have enough resources to maximize the use of their fleet. According to fleet data from ch-aviation.com, at the moment, SIA has 36 inactive aircraft between its two main airline brands. Among the aircraft sitting on the ground are 15 Boeing 777ERs, two Airbus A350s, two A380s, and two 787-8s. With increasing competition in the coming year and with China's reopening from COVID-19 lockdowns, airlines in Northeast Asia are expected to put more capacity in the air which would result in supply putting pressure on prices. SIA is expected to do the same to contend for market share. Already in December, Scoot resumed flights to Zhengzhou, China in December 2022, while SIA restarted fortnightly passenger services from Singapore to Beijing on 30 December 2022. While the China market is still slowly recovering, SIA has been expanding its capacity in India, an important market, since the middle of last year. SIA has already resumed flights to the following South Asian cities at frequencies matching or exceeding pre-C levels: Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Dubai, Hyderabad, Kathmandu, Kochi, Kolkata, and Mumbai. To underline the strategic importance of the Indian market to SIA, it made a commitment to continue to invest in the market late last year. On November 29, the airline announced that it will be converting its 49 per cent stake in Vistara into a 20 per cent stake in the new <keyword id="2573" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="air-india" source="Orion">Air India</keyword> Group, with the additional USD250 million used to acquire another 5 per cent. SIA has also agreed to inject up to another USD615 million after the merger is completed, (expected by March 2024), should the new airline group require additional funds from its shareholders to fund its restructuring and expansion. The actual amount will depend on factors including the progress of the enlarged Air India's business plan, and its access to other funding options. The airline said in a statement, "Through this transaction, SIA will reinforce its partnership with Tata and immediately acquire a strategic stake in an entity that is four to five times larger in scale compared to Vistara. The merger would bolster SIA's presence in India, strengthen its multi-hub strategy, and allow it to continue participating directly in a large and fast-growing aviation market." When Tata Sons agreed to buy Air India, the acquisition was completed a year ago on January 27, Tata was expected to consolidate its airline assets which meant it was likely to merge Vistara with Air India. SIA could have stepped away from its investment in the Indian market and sold its 49 per cent stake in Vistara. However, it decided to take a minority stake in a larger airline, and here are some of the possible reasons. First of all, the new Air India Group will be a much bigger player in the Indian aviation market. Its four airlines will have a 26 per cent market share based on domestic seat capacity and 21 per cent of international seat capacity in the current quarter, based on OAG data. India as a market and a source of travelers is of strategic importance to both SIA as well as Singapore overall. SIA will in time be able to increase its connectivity to Indian destinations as well as serve Indian passengers on international routes using Changi Airport as a transit point. This could open up attractive destinations in other parts of Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, North Asia, and the west coast of America to Indian passengers. With the massive Terminal 5 in Changi opening in the middle of the next decade, any additional passenger churn will be vital to ensure the airport expansion fulfills its promise. India is among the top three aviation markets in the world and poised to double passenger traffic over the next 10 years supported by rising income levels and ongoing investments in its aviation infrastructure. It is projected to exceed 300 million airline passengers by 2027. However, India also remains underserved with low international seats per capita, signifying significant growth potential. Another factor that SIA would have considered is that the CEO of the new Air India group is a trusted 25-year veteran of the company before he joined the Indian airline in the middle of last year. Campbell Wilson, a New Zealander, was previously chief executive of Scoot and rotated through various roles at SIA in countries like Japan, Canada, and Hong Kong, and was senior vice president of sales and marketing for SIA. As quoted by Fortune, he said in a letter to employees on the one-year anniversary of the completion of Tata's takeover of Air India, "Taken together, the progress over the last 12 months has been nothing short of stunning, even if so much of what we have been working on has been behind the scenes, building platforms and capabilities so that our future ambitions can take flight. There is of course much more that needs to be done, and everyone internally and externally - is hungry for us to do it." Why Singapore Airlines is investing in Air India?

New Delhi, Jan 31 () Indian aviation sector "re-established" its resilience this fiscal despite a large airline suspending operations and the government has been providing a congenial environment so that airlines can have more than 1,200 planes by 2023-24, according to the Economic Survey.
 India is the world's third largest domestic market for civil aviation and has 136 Airports Authority of India (AAI)-managed airports as well as six aerodromes under public private partnerships, it said.
In recent times, domestic traffic growth had faced headwinds.
The Survey for 2019-20, tabled in Parliament on Friday, also said airlines operators in the country have scaled up their aircraft seat capacity from an estimated 0.07 annual seats per capita in 2013 to 0.12 in 2018.
 "Indian aviation re-established its resilience in the year 2019-20. Despite a large airline suspending operations on April 17, 2019, the sector swiftly sprung back to fill the void created in passenger and air cargo capacity," it said.
 After flying for more than 25 years, full-service carrier Jet Airways shuttered operations in April last year as it ran out of funds. The closure had a significant impact in the sector, including lower capacity to meet higher passenger demand.
 To ease the strain on existing airport capacities, 100 more are to be made operational by FY 2023-24. Besides using 46 idle airstrips, 16 private greenfield airports, 15 AAI airports, 31 heliports, and 12 waterdromes would also be developed, as per the Survey.
 As many as five new airports, including at Kannur in Kerala and Shirdi in Maharashtra, were operationalised this fiscal.
 "To continue with the high growth trajectory, the government has been providing a congenial environment so that the Indian carriers double their fleet from about 680 aircraft at the close of November 2019 to over 1,200 by FY 2023-24," the Survey said.
 The fleet refers to those of scheduled airlines.
 According to the Survey, high growth would continue by way of easing leasing and financing from Indian shores, efficient use of air traffic rights, encouraging domestic and international passenger and goods transfers, and rationalising the tax regime.

The Survey for 2019-20, tabled in Parliament on Friday, also said airlines operators in the country have scaled up their aircraft seat capacity from an estimated 0.07 annual seats per capita in 2013 to 0.12 in 2018.
 "Indian aviation re-established its resilience in the year 2019-20. Despite a large airline suspending operations on April 17, 2019, the sector swiftly sprung back to fill the void created in passenger and air cargo capacity," it said.
 After flying for more than 25 years, full-service carrier Jet Airways shuttered operations in April last year as it ran out of funds. The closure had a significant impact in the sector, including lower capacity to meet higher passenger demand.
 To ease the strain on existing airport capacities, 100 more are to be made operational by FY 2023-24. Besides using 46 idle airstrips, 16 private greenfield airports, 15 AAI airports, 31 heliports, and 12 waterdromes would also be developed, as per the Survey.
 As many as five new airports, including at Kannur in Kerala and Shirdi in Maharashtra, were operationalised this fiscal.
 "To continue with the high growth trajectory, the government has been providing a congenial environment so that the Indian carriers double their fleet from about 680 aircraft at the close of November 2019 to over 1,200 by FY 2023-24," the Survey said.
 The fleet refers to those of scheduled airlines.
 According to the Survey, high growth would continue by way of easing leasing and financing from Indian shores, efficient use of air traffic rights, encouraging domestic and international passenger and goods transfers, and rationalising the tax regime.
 "Capacity utilisation is also being augmented by way of automation at airports. Overall objective is to meet the growing demand and set global best practices and performance quality standards," it added. RAM RAM ANU

Chandigarh, Jun 30 () The Punjab government on Tuesday issued fresh guidelines for the next phase of the coronavirus lockdown from July 1 to 31, saying there will be no restriction on interstate and intrastate movement of persons and goods. No separate permission/approval/e-permit will be required for such movements, according to the guidelines issued for the period. Interstate and intrastate movement of buses will be allowed without any restriction and transportation vehicles can utilise the entire seating capacity, an official spokesperson said. He said schools, colleges, educational and coaching institutions will remain closed till July 31. Online/distance learning shall continue to be permitted and be encouraged, he said. Training institutions of the central and state governments will be allowed to function from July 15 for which standard operating procedures (SOP) will be issued by the Union Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT). The state government has also allowed the district authorities to impose such restrictions as deemed necessary in areas outside the containment zones, the spokesperson said. Prohibition on cinema halls, gymnasiums, swimming pools, entertainment parks, theatres, bars, auditoriums, assembly halls and similar places will continue. The spokesperson further said the restrictions will remain in force in the containment zones till July 31 and such zones will be demarcated by the district authorities as per the guidelines of the Union Ministry of Health &amp; Family Welfare (MoHFW). Only essential activities shall be permitted in the containment zones, said the spokesperson. The movement of individuals for all non-essential activities will remain prohibited between 10 pm to 5 am throughout the state. Restaurants were allowed to open till 9 pm with 50 per cent occupancy or 50 guests, whichever is less. Liquor can be served provided the restaurant has a valid permission from the excise department. However, the bars shall remain closed, said the spokesperson. All shopping malls and shops, including those in main bazars in both urban and rural areas, are allowed to open between 7 am to 8 pm. Liquor vends will, however, remain open from 8 am to 9 pm, said the spokesperson. The official added that shops dealing in essential commodities will be allowed to operate till 8 pm on all days. Punjab issues fresh guidelines for next phase of coronavirus lockdown

New Delhi, Apr 30 () Amid the coronavirus pandemic, domestic air passenger traffic in March fell by 33.06 per cent to 77.62 lakh as compared to the same month last year, the aviation regulator DGCA said on Thursday. India has been under a lockdown since March 25 to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus. All commercial passenger flights have been suspended for the lockdown period. According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) data, passenger load factors of all airlines in India decreased significantly in March as compared to February. Passenger load factor measures the seat capacity utilisation of the airline. "The passenger load factor in the month of March 2020 has shown a sharp decline due to suspension of air operations because of COVID-19 outbreak," the DGCA explained. At 83.7 per cent, SpiceJet saw the highest passenger load factor in March. At number two, GoAir had 78.9 per cent load factor. In February this year, the rise in the number of domestic air passengers was 8.9 per cent to 1.23 crore when compared with the figures of the corresponding month in 2019. Indian aviation sector has been hit hard due to the coronavirus pandemic, which has infected more than 33,000 people and killed at least 1,070 people in the country till now. According to the DGCA data released on Thursday, IndiGo maintained its lead position with 48.9 per cent share of the domestic passenger market in March 2020. SpiceJet was at number two as its market share increased from 15.3 per cent in February to 16 per cent in March, as per the data. The market share of Air India, GoAir, AirAsia India and Vistara was 10.8 per cent, 9.9 per cent, 7.6 per cent and 5.9 per cent respectively last month. In March, a total of 467 passenger-related complaints were received by the domestic airlines. The number of complaints per 10,000 passengers carried for the same month was around 0.60, according to the data. Among the major domestic airlines, Air India topped the list of passenger grievances with 2.1 complaints per 10,000 passengers in February, while GoAir was at number two position with 0.8 complaint per 10,000 passengers. New Delhi, Nov 20 () Co-working platform myHQ on Wednesday sait it has raised USD 1.5 million (around Rs 10.7 crore) from investors including India Quotient to fund expansion plan.
 The startup has been founded in 2016 by two IIT Delhi graduates - Utkarsh Kawatra and Vinayak Agrawal. It offers workspaces across 120+ locations in Delhi-NCR region at places like restaurants, cafes, co-working centre and office complexes that have excess inventory.
 "myHQ has raised USD 1.5 million in its pre-Series A round led by India Quotient. The round also saw investments from Singapore-based family office RB Investments, Ashish Goenka from Suashish, angels from the online platform LetsVenture and participations from existing investors (Anupam Mittal and Nitish Mittersian amongst others)," the company said in a statement.
 myHQ said it plans to utilise the funds to expand into new cities, introduce new product offerings and invest in their technology infrastructure.
 "This investment underlines our investors' confidence in our model that offers greater value to those who are looking for a workspace. Using existing excess real estate inventory available with third-parties, not only reduces our financial risks but also allows us to offer workspaces to our customer at an extremely affordable price," said Utkarsh Kawatra, Co-founder, myHQ.
 This fund raise not only reaffirms the business, but also reflects the growing demand for such spaces by the modern workforce, said Vinayak Agrawal, co-founder, myHQ.
 According to a report by global property consultant Cushman &amp; Wakefield, there are 1,000 operational coworking centres, with a capacity of over 4 lakh seats, across top six cities -- Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad and Chennai.

Co-working platform myHQ raises USD 1.5 mn to fund expansion

New Delhi, Nov 18 () Indicating some recovery in the aviation sector due to the tourist season, the domestic air passenger traffic this October increased by 3.98 per cent compared to the same month last year, according to data released by the DGCA on Monday.
In September this year, the domestic passenger growth was just 1.18 per cent compared to the same month last year.
The domestic air traffic last month consisted of 12.31 million passengers compared to 11.84 million passengers in the same month last year, a jump of 3.98 per cent, as per data.
On the date for October, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said, "The passenger load factor in the month of October 2019 has shown increasing trend compared to previous months primarily due to the onset of tourist season."
However, the passenger load factor of all major airlines -- Air India, SpiceJet, GoAir, IndiGo, AirAsia and Vistara -- declined in October as compared to September this year, as per DGCA data.
The passenger load factor measures the seat capacity utilisation of the airline.
 IndiGo maintained its lead position with 47.4 per cent share of the domestic passenger market in October, the data showed.
SpiceJet's market share increased from 14.7 per cent in September to 16.3 per cent in October, giving it the number two spot, as per the data.
The market share of Air India, GoAir, AirAsia and Vistara was 12.6 per cent, 11.2 per cent, 6.5 per cent and 5.4 per cent respectively last month. 
In October this year, a total of 791 passenger-related complaints were received by the domestic airlines, according to DGCA data. 
The number of complaints per 10,000 passengers carried for the month of October was around 0.64.
Among major domestic airlines, Air India topped the list of passenger grievances with 1.6 complaints per 10,000 passengers in September, while SpiceJet was on number two position with 0.8 complaints per 10,000 passengers, as per DGCA data. DSP DSP RDM

We are particularly pleased with this quarter because it demonstrated our ability to grow rapidly while simultaneously expanding our margin performance," the company's CEO, Ronojoy Dutta said. In a conference call with analysts, the management highlighted that its efforts in managing its fleet and routes led to a fall in fuel cost of 11% during the quarter whereas the actual fall in jet fuel was much lesser. "Going forward, obviously, this quarter the aircraft utilisation was a little lower due to some temporary issues. As that improves there will be some tailwinds in terms of fixed costs," Rohit Philip, the chief financial officer of IndiGo said. Sales jumped 42% to ₹9,420 crore and market share has steadily risen since rival Jet Airways went bankrupt and stopped flying. This has helped all airlines charge higher airfares while costs came down, helping their profits. However, Chief Executive Officer Ronojoy Dutta dismissed any significant benefit from the disappearnce of Jet Airways on the company's performance. IndiGo only got 35 slots vacated by Jet in the Mumbai airport and that's a small portion of the total 1400 slots IndiGo has. For fiscal year 2020, year over year capacity increase in available seat per kilometre is expected to be 30%, the company said in a presentation. All the three listed airlines posted net losses for the nine months ending 2018-19. Indigo, which has a 40% market share, posted Rs 433 crore net loss. Jet Airways posted a massive net loss of RS 3,208 crore while SpiceJet’s was at RS 372 crore. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t The only good news for Indian airlines is its robust demand and capacity utilisation. But it won’t bring in many advantages, since in the Indian market, it coincides with lower airfares. Jet’s grounding is the only silver lining for the aviation industry, as lower competition has increased airfares and margins will improve. “Domestic passenger traffic growth during the year would moderate to 8-12%, as fares remain high. With Jet Airways’ entire fleet grounded, it would take considerable time for domestic airlines to make up for the extinguished seat inventory,” CARE says. And the ability of airlines to keep fares low, largely depends on how crude oil prices will move. If crude oil prices remain steady, all Indian airlines can post profits by the end of March 2020, all thanks to Jet.
