Recently, the pair moved into a $2 million home in New York's Hudson Valley. The move may have been motivated by Eldridge's desire to run for a local Congressional seat, <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/11/nyregion/Young-Rich-and-Relocating-to-Hudson-Valley-in-Hunt-for-Political-Office.html?pagewanted=2&amp;_r=1&amp;hp">The New York Times reports.</a>
Although the couple denies moving in pursuit of power, NYT paints a different picture – one that really has neighbors annoyed.
Hughes and Eldridge had purchased a $5 million home in Garrison, N.Y. first, but there was no Congressional seat available for Eldridge to claim. For this reason, NYT not-so-subtly suggests, they left the 80-acre home, which was formerly owned by one of the Vanderbilts, but kept their 4,000 square-foot SoHo loft in Manhattan. Hughes earned about $500 million from his Facebook involvement. He's also an advisor and investor in rapidly growing media startup, Upworthy.
Eldridge, 26, already raised $300,000 for a campaign earlier this year. Supporters include former Facebook President Sean Parker and billionaire George Soros. But Eldridge and his friends are steadfast in their claims that he moved upstate simply because of "affection for the area."
“The Hudson Valley is my home. It’s where I work. It’s where I got married,” Eldridge tells NYT in an interview.
Neighbors seem skeptical though. Many don't like the idea of wealthy entrepreneurs moving in and acting like they can run the place. One told The New York Times it was "presumptuous."
Another grumbled, "This area is becoming too citified."

While cases of voter fraud using absentee and mail-in ballots do occur, they are extremely rare. According to <a href="https://www.heritage.org/voterfraud">the conservative Heritage Foundation's own database of voter- and election-fraud cases</a>, there have been 1,100 criminal convictions for all voter fraud and fewer than 150 criminal convictions for fraudulent use of absentee ballots over the past 20 years. And even though Trump won the 2016 election, he continued to claim for months that<a href="https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/trump-noncitizen-voters/"> millions of undocumented immigrants had improperly voted in that election</a> and were partly responsible for 2016 Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton winning the popular vote. To this day, no evidence has surfaced to prove that any widespread voter fraud occurred in 2016. "For five years, Trump has sought to undermine our elections again and again—from soliciting foreign interference to making baseless claims about voter fraud to lying about the results of the 2016 election," Sean Eldridge, the president of the progressive grassroots democracy reform group Stand Up America told Insider in a statement. "Today's comments are an escalation in these attacks on our democracy and show the insidious ways in which Trump is working to sow doubt about the outcome of this election before votes are even cast."

Sean Eldridge, husband of Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes, is being mocked by Republicans after firing his longtime campaign manager Michael Reid.
Eldridge is running for Republican incumbent Rep. Chris Gibson's seat in New York's 19th congressional district.
 
Business Insider confirmed <a href="http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2014/07/ny-eldridge-fires-campaign-manager-191477.html?hp=l19">reports of Reid's dismissal</a> in an email exchange with Eldridge's communications manager, Sophie Friedman, Wednesday. 
Friedman said the campaign "decided to bring in new leadership for the final few months of the campaign" and noted they "wish Mike well and are appreciative of all of his hard work and efforts." When asked who would be appointed to replace Reid, Friedman said the campaign "had no additional comment beyond the statement." 
Republicans quickly pounced on the news. The New York State GOP sent out a statement Wednesday that characterized the firing as one of many slipups Eldridge has made on the campaign trail. The statement, which included a quote from National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Ian Prior, referenced <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SliMws506D0">an unflattering story published in Politico</a> in April that accused Eldridge of avoiding reporters, Eldridge's <a href="http://www.buzzfeed.com/gideonresnick/sean-eldridge-is-looking-for-a-communications-director">rather public search for a communications director</a>, and allegations <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sean-eldridge-donation-2014-3">he took an illegal campaign contribution</a>. 
"Like the self-entitled and self-unaware amateur that he is, Sean Eldridge apparently chose to take out his own shortcomings as a candidate on his staff," Prior said. "If Eldridge can't competently manage a Congressional campaign funded by $1 million of his own money, it seems a lot to expect that he could competently serve as a Congressman for Hudson Valley families."
On Thursday, the New York Republican Party followed that up with a press release including five mock suggestions for potential replacements to run Eldridge's campaign. The list included Ponzi schemer Bernie Madoff since, in the GOP's words, Eldridge's "whole campaign is a giant sham" and Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, the pilot famous for landing a US Airways jet that lost engine power in 2009.
"Who better to call when your campaign is sputtering toward oblivion with no sign of hope?" the GOP asked.

Facebook Co-Founder's Husband Mocked As A 'Self-Entitled And Self-Unaware Amateur' After Firing Campaign Manager

Eldridge, a Democrat, is running to unseat Republican incumbent Rep. Chris Gibson. He and Hughes <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-facebook-millionaires-get-married-2012-7">were married in 2012</a>. 
On Wednesday, the New York Daily News reported an unnamed "GOP source" <a href="http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/dc/2014/03/republicans-accuse-congressional-hopeful-eldridge-of-accepting-illegal-donation">provided them a copy of a complaint</a> about Eldridge that Delaware County Republican Committee Chairwoman Maria Kelso sent to the Federal Election Commission last month. In the complaint, Kelso alleged Eldridge "violated the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971" and FEC regulations by using footage filmed by a local non-profit in one of his campaign videos. The FEC told the Daily News it had not yet received the complaint. 
The clip in question appeared in <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKsq4d889lk#t=130">a campaign launch video</a> Eldridge posted on YouTube Sept. 22, 2013. In the video, Eldridge highlighted his work funding small, local business as president of the investment firm Hudson River Ventures. He also discussed the Hudson Valley Advanced Manufacturing Center at SUNY New Paltz, which he co-founded. Eldridge's video features Larry Gottlieb, president and CEO of Hudson Valley Economic Development Corporation, praising the 3D printing program at the center. 
However, the complaint from Kelso claimed the footage of Gottlieb previously appeared <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zch0hfomHlo#t=101">in another video</a> posted by the HVEDC in May of last year that touted investment in 3D printing in the Hudson Valley, including a $250,000 grant from Eldridge. Kelso's complaint argued Eldridge's campaign launch used the footage from the earlier HVEDC video and points out Gottlieb appears to be wearing the same shirt and tie in both clips. Since the HVEDC video and the footage of Gottlieb are "clearly the property of HVEDC," the committee argued allowing Eldridge to use the clip constituted an unlawful in-kind contribution to his campaign committee as corporations are not allowed to make direct donations to political campaigns. 
"If, in fact, the HVEDC Video was legitimately produced for HVEDC, then the value of the footage used in both the HVEDC Video and the Announcement Video is clearly an in-kind contribution from HVEDC," the complaint said. "As a corporation, HVEDC is absolutely prohibited from contributing to the Committee. Thus, HVEDC has made, and Eldridge and the Committee accepted, a prohibited corporate contribution." 
Morgan Hook, a spokesman for Eldridge, dismissed the complaint as an ineffective attack from Gibson.
"If Chris Gibson wants to direct attention to a video that shows Sean was creating jobs in the Hudson Valley while he was playing political games in Washington, we will gladly have this discussion," Hook said. "The video in question is in the public domain, and there is no violation here."

He would go on to easily win his race later in the day despite facing a 20-count indictment.</img></div></div>The epicenter for House Democrats' losses Tuesday night was in New York State, where Republicans scored stunning margins or performed better than expected in race after race.
"Roughly a quarter of the House losses nationally occurred in New York," a Democratic insider told Business Insider after marveling at the results.
None of the Republican seats Democrats had targeted went their way, even as Rep. Steve Israel (D-N.Y.), the chair of the DCCC, the campaign arm of House Democrats, made a number of those races <a href="http://observer.com/2014/08/dccc-vows-unprecedented-field-operation-against-michael-grimm/">a priority</a>.
Republicans were more than happy to crow about the results.
"Steve Israel said it himself - 'New York was the center of gravity' - and he was right," Ian Prior, a spokesman for the Republicans NRCC, told Business Insider in a statement. "We started the cycle with Israel and the DCCC looking to pick up 3 seats in New York and it turned out that we were the ones that picked up 3 seats; and we did so with enormous margins in both our challenger races and incumbent races."
Notably, Rep. Michael Grimm (R-N.Y.) more than doubled his margin of victory this year over 2012 - even though he faced <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/michael-grimms-race-has-become-a-hot-mess-for-democrats-2014-11">a more experienced opponent</a>, former Councilman Domenic Recchia (D), and had a host of additional troubles. Grimm was <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/congressman-charged-with-cheating-taxes-hiring-undocumented-immigrants-2014-4">indicted last April</a> on 20 counts of alleged fraud and other criminal acts. In January, Grimm drew national headlines <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/michael-grimm-threatens-ny1-reporter-michael-scotto-2014-1">when he threatened</a> to throw a reporter off a balcony. But none of that seemed to matter, and Grimm won by about 13%.
In a race that wasn't on any national strategist's radar, Rep. Louise Slaughter (D) is barely hanging onto her Rochester-area seat even though President Barack Obama won her district with <a href="http://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/11/19/1163009/-Daily-Kos-Elections-presidential-results-by-congressional-district-for-the-2012-2008-elections?detail=hide">close to 60% of the vote</a> in 2012. Slaughter's lead is just 582 votes, according to the <a href="http://project.wnyc.org/election2014/">latest numbers</a> from WNYC.
"Well, it wasn't exactly a landslide, was it?" Slaughter quipped on election night, according <a href="http://www.democratandchronicle.com/story/news/2014/11/04/mark-assini-louise-slaughter-congress-election/18510323/">to the Rochester Democrat &amp; Chronicle</a>.
Nearby, Syracuse Rep. Dan Maffei (D) holds a district Obama won by a similar margin and was blown out of the water by Republican John Katko, 60% to 40%. This is despite the fact that Republicans <a href="http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2013/03/national_gop_leaders_visit_syr.html">initially struggled</a> to find a challenger to Maffei.

Thirty-year-old Republican <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/elise-stefanik-wins-youngest-member-of-congress-2014-11">rising star</a> Elise Stefanik grabbed another former Democratic upstate seat by crushing her opponent, <a href="http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2014/02/democrats_choose_filmmaker_aaron_woolf_to_run_for_congress_in_north_country.html">the owner</a> of a Brooklyn health food store, by more than 20 points. Long Island Rep. Tim Bishop (D) was easily ousted by a Republican state senator, Lee Zeldin. And in a once-touted race, Sean Eldridge, the husband of Facebook founder Chris Hughes, was trounced by Rep. Chris Gibson (R). Obama won all three of these districts.
"Poor recruiting led to a blowout in the North Country. Tim Bishop lost in a landslide in Steve Israel's backyard, and the DCCC a didn't even notice that Louise Slaughter almost lost until the results came in," the Democratic insider lamented to Business Insider.
Reached for comment, DCCC spokesman Josh Schwerin pointed to some of their success stories of the night, including Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D), who holds a narrow edge against former Rep. Nan Hayworth (R) after a hotly contested campaign. And Republicans <a href="https://www.nrcc.org/2013/01/15/2012-presidential-results-by-congressional-district/">once hoped </a>to beat Kathleen Rice in a left-leaning open seat in Long Island.
"In a Republican wave year, Democrats were able to limit losses with strong members like Sean Patrick Maloney and candidates like Kathleen Rice winning in seats that House Republicans had claimed were their top targets," Schwerin said.
