In the era of voice-controlled smartphones and home speakers, <a href="https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/">Mozilla</a>, the web browser company, is <a href="https://www.cnet.com/news/mozilla-working-on-scout-a-voice-controlled-web-browser-project/">planning</a> to dive into the untapped market of voice-controlled browsers.<br /><br />The company recently announced the Scout browser project, which seems to be in its initial phases. Scout, which will be a voice-controlled browser responding to commands like “Hey, Scout, read me the article about polar bears”, will definitely establish a new way to use the internet. <br /><br />With this innovation, the company might be able to find a way to stay relevant in the market that is otherwise dominated by Google Chrome and Safari for Apple users. The browser market is currently dominated by Chrome which accounts for almost 58% of web usage. Mozilla <keyword id="30002" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Firefox">Firefox</keyword> has a mere 5% share in the <a href="http://gs.statcounter.com/">market</a>.<br /><br />While the company says that Scout is an “early-stage-project” there is almost no information available on how exactly it will work. But we can expect it to work on the lines of voice assistants that currently exist in the market.<br /><br />If and when Mozilla puts Scout on the market, it will help reshape how the visually impaired use internet. <br /><br />Currently, Google has a mic support that allows its users to search by voice commands, but a fully voice-controlled browser will be first of its kind.<br />

The creator of Firefox is making a voice-controlled browser that will read the entire internet to you out loud

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Ray Cao began reselling sneakers and apparel at 17 to help get his family out of debt.</li><li>Cao mostly now sells on StockX and has eclipsed $1.4 million in sales on the marketplace. </li></ul><p>Ray Cao helped get his family out of $200,000 in debt by turning to resale as a teenager. Now, eight years later, his hobby has evolved into a profitable side hustle.</p><p>As a teen, Cao's parents racked up gambling debt and invested in penny stocks that backfired, he told Insider.</p><p>"What got me into reselling was just being desperate to improve the financial situation for my family," Cao said. "There would be arguments every single day regarding what we can spend money on."</p><p>In 2015, when he was 17, he used his paychecks from working at a bubble tea store in New York City to invest in sneakers and merchandise.</p><p>He started by reselling Supreme clothing and Yeezy sneakers.</p><p>"I was able to increase my inventory and scale, and that's when I really saw, 'Wow this could be, like, a huge income stream,'" he said.</p><p>His parents have been an active part of his resale business since the beginning. Cao recently left a full-time job in finance to pursue other business ventures outside of reselling. But his side hustle remains a family operation. His parents regularly help him sort through incoming orders for defects and ensure all items are included in shipments.</p><p>His family is now out of debt, and Cao has made over $1.4 million on StockX since 2017, according to screenshots of his seller dashboards viewed by Insider. </p><div type="image" title="Cao's parents have supported his resale endeavors since the beginning." height="2709" width="3612" msid="99639499" hostid="261" sizebytes="697464"></div><h2>Reselling on StockX costs more but saves time</h2><p>A turning point for Cao's business came when StockX asked for a meeting a few years ago.</p><p>"I eventually garnered the attention of my StockX Account Manager at the time. We grabbed coffee, and this was where the business really took off," he said.</p><p>Cao had been rising up StockX's seller rankings. The company offered Cao the opportunity to store his inventory at a local warehouse, which fast-tracked how quickly his team could authenticate items and ship them out to customers.</p><p>The platform's automation tools, such as bulk shipping, have reduced Cao's active-work time to just 10 hours a month, he said. In his early days of reselling, Cao recalled manually shipping as many as 1,000 items a week.</p><p>Scout, <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=5cb72ee04d6051e30aad02e93db9ff2fcf78295a59c65a044c444ca813edc91b&amp;postID=643da1eac4cc6f7f401aa20c&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fstockx.com%2Fabout%2Fstockx-acquires-scout%2F" target="_blank" rel="noopener">which StockX acquired in 2021</a>, also offers sellers online-inventory management and pricing tools — Scout's mobile app lets sellers use a phone's camera to scan shoeboxes and list items on StockX.</p><p>Cao does not have an exclusive deal with StockX, but he said about 97% of his sales occur on the platform. He began selling on the marketplace in 2017, one year after <a href="https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/local/detroit-city/2018/05/24/detroit-news-stock-day-detroit-josh-luber-dan-gilbert-sneakerheads/35333399/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">StockX launched to the public</a>. Cao also sells inventory to other resellers at a premium. </p><p>"It's true that you don't make the best money on StockX," Cao said, referring to fees the marketplace charges for orchestrating a sale. "The best money will still always be, like, local meetups and stuff like that. But if a company saves me time, I'm happy to make less money." </p><h2><div type="image" title="Cao on a New York City subway after picking up a pair of Yeezy 350 V2 sneakers." height="2274" width="3024" msid="99639500" hostid="261" sizebytes="346092"></div></h2><h2>You don't need to wait in line or stay up all night to get the best inventory</h2><p>Cao began reselling in 2015 by going after every hype release he could. He recalled staying up all night to manually buy multiple pairs of Yeezys on Yeezy Supply. That's just part of the resale game for many; being available when the product drops is critical to securing inventory. </p><p>Supreme merchandise also generated high profits at the time, so Cao would scoop up a lot of items by waiting in line at the store or on the streetwear brand's site. </p><p>Now he actively goes for inventory that is readily available and under retail price because more resellers go after limited drops. His go-to items to sell now include artist merchandise — normally tees, hoodies, hats, and other accessories artists sell — from Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, and Travis Scott. His biggest seller, however, is Fear Of God Essentials, a clothing brand the fashion designer Jerry Lorenzo created. </p><p>"I'll just buy a ton at my own convenience," he said. "I don't have time to line up or stay up all night."</p><p>According to Cao, he has never relied on bots to secure sneakers or apparel he resells because the technolgy would eat into his margins. Bots are computer programs that perform automatic, repetitive tasks that make it nearly effortless for resellers to check out a large volume of merchandise online at once.</p><p>Instead, he's relied on some third-party cook-group connections and the Google Chrome extension Page Monitor. The browser plug-in gives users alerts when a website lists new items. </p><h2>There are mountains of inventory in Cao's house, but seldom does any of it make it into his closet.</h2><p>While Cao has also resold Converse and Gucci Ace sneakers, apparel requires a lot less storage space, he said.</p><p>Still, his house is packed with goods waiting to be resold.</p><p>"My house just looks like a mess. It's just inventory everywhere. Fear Of God hoodies, like, stacked to the ceiling in my parents' room and my sister's room," he said. "I'm planning to get a bigger apartment and then get all that stuff into the condo I'm moving into in a few months."</p><p>There are mountains of inventory in Cao's house, but seldom does any of it make it into his closet.</p><p>Unlike most resellers, Cao was never enamored with the latest Off-White or Supreme release.</p><p>"I never had a passion for sneakers, streetwear, any of it. All of it was like business to me," he said. "It was just solely for the purpose of making money."</p>

<p>If you don't want Google to know anything about you, that's also tough.</p>
<p>The makers of the Epic Privacy Browser, a browser that protects your identity by sharing almost nothing about you with the Internet, thought they had figured out how serve up privacy while also making money on their app by selling ads.</p>
<p>And it was going great until Google made some technical changes to how it collects information about people and basically killed their business model.</p>
<h2>Your Info Is Worth Money</h2>
<p>The crux of the situation is this: Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, Facebook and many others make money by selling <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword>. The more they know about you, the more they can match you to an advertiser who thinks you are an ideal customer. Advertisers are naturally willing to pay more for ads that are served to ideal potential customers. For instance, financial services companies want to target affluent people. Children's clothing makers want to target parents.</p>
<p>Google uses a lot of sophisticated methods to learn about you. There's the stuff you tell Google outright when you sign up for its services like Gmail and Google Maps, or via an Android phone, like your name, phone number, location, and so on.</p>
<p>But even if you don't sign up for Google's services, the search giant can deduce a lot about you by watching the websites you've visited (like your gender and your age bracket) and knowing your location.</p>
<p>Some information about you, including the city where you're located and which device you're using, can be revealed through your IP address. An IP address is how the Internet knows where to deliver the web page you requested. It's a necessary part of using the Internet just like a street addresses is a necessary part of delivering mail.</p>
<p>It is possible to hide everything, even your IP address, from Google. You can use a privacy browser like Epic or Tor that won't let Google or others track you. The problem is, there's no great business model for those providing the privacy service. There's not a lot of money to be made on customers who want to hide from advertisers. Tor, for instance, <a href="https://www.torproject.org/donate/donate.html.en">gives its browser away for free and asks people to make a donation.</a></p>
<h2>For A While, Everyone Was Happy</h2>

<p>Epic worked with a company called Blucora, a Google partner that sells search service to other businesses, known as a "white label" search. This is a way for businesses to integrate Google's services into their own websites and apps. People don't know they are using Google, or Yahoo, or Bing, they just get the search results.</p>
<p>Working with Blucora, Epic arranged to serve Google's ads to its browser users by revealing a tiny part of their IP address - a general location. Blucora "masked" the portion of the IP address that indicated an exact Internet Service Provider or a precise device. Epic earned a portion of the income of for the ads it served.</p>
<p>"An advertiser will pay a certain amount for click from Washington D.C. and a very different amount for a click from Turkey or Bangalore," Epic founder Alok Bhardwaj told us. "To get these search ads, we needed to send Google our users' IP addresses. They needed to know what your location is."</p>
<p>There were other requirements involved. Google doesn't allow its name to be used by white label search customers. It doesn't want these business to say that search results came from Google, or to somehow indicate that Google endorses them.</p>
<p>Epic had to agree not to use Google's name on its website in any way. It wasn't even allowed to use the word "Google" in a headline from a news story that it linked to from its website.<span><span></span> </span></p>
<p>In any case, the agreement went forward and Epic was making money until earlier this year. Then Google made some technical changes to its AdSense for Search service.</p>
<h2>Google Changes Its Technology</h2>

But one change impacted Epic.</p>
<p>Google started requiring all of its white label search partners send Google the full IP address of their customers. Period.</p>
<p>This rule was because Google added new technology to detect fraud, the spokesperson said. A masked IP address, where the IP address is hidden, often indicates a fraudster, she said. Click fraud, where hackers user robots to click on ads hosted on their web pages, <a href="http://www.mediapost.com/publications/article/218549/click-fraud-costs-marketers-11b-iab-issues-key-r.html">cost marketers $11.6 billion in 2013,</a> the advertising industry says.</p>
<p>So Google now scouts for masked IP addresses and will not serve ads unless it is given the full IP address.</p>
<p>Epic asked if Google would make an exception for the Epic privacy browser.</p>
<p>Google refused. And Epic has refused to give Google its users' IP addresses, having promised its users that it won't. So Google will no longer share ads with Epic.</p>
<p>Because all of the big Internet search companies make money by serving similar targeted ads, Bhardwaj can't find another search ad partner to take Google's place.</p>
<p>Unless he figures something else out to support his browser, he's hosed.</p>
<p>In the meantime, he wants people to understand how difficult it is to maintain privacy on the web.</p>
<p>"Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo, everyone says one thing about privacy and does something else. They want to track people," he says.</p>
<h2>Privacy Options</h2>
<p>When we asked Google how someone might use Google's services while maintaining privacy, Google sent us to its<a href="http://www.google.com/settings/ads"> Ads Settings page</a>, where people can opt out of interest-based ads<span style="font-size: 13px; color: #444444; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue',HelveticaNeue,Helvetica,sans-serif; line-height: 22px;"></span>.</p>
<p>This won't stop the whole Internet from tacking you, as a privacy browser tries to do, but it will limit the info that Google gives to marketeers.</p>
<p>Bhardwaj has filed an official complaint with the Federal Trade Commission, asking for regulatory oversight over how Google treats ads served through competing browsers.</p>
<p>In the meantime, the Epic browser is still currently available for you to download. As are a few others, like <a href="https://www.torproject.org/">Tor</a>. </p>
<p>We reached out to Blucora to ask about the situation and a spokesperson declined, telling us, "Given our longstanding relationship with Google we allow them to comment directly about their services."</p>

How Google Inadvertently Crushed A Privacy Startup

Francisco Tolmasky, however, was scouted out by the firm before he had even graduated from college.</p>
<p>Tomalsky, now 29, was recruited to work on a mobile Web browser for the original iPhone when he was 20 years old.</p>
<p>He played a major role in making sure Apple's Safari Web browser worked smoothly on a smartphone, from ensuring that websites looked normal on a smaller screen to making sure touch, swipe and pinch gestures worked properly.</p>
<p>In a recent interview with <a href="http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/04/24/ex-iphone/?_php=true&amp;_type=blogs&amp;_r=0">The New York Times,</a> Tomalsky talked about former Apple CEO Steve Jobs' methodology when it came to creating iPhone apps, saying the following:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Steve was really adamant. This needs to be like magic. Go back, this isn't magical enough! I remember being very frustrated. This was, like, an impossible task. </p>
<p>Apple's ridiculously high standards when it comes to product launches isn't exactly news. But Tomalsky revealed some details about what it was like to work at the company around the time its first iPhone launched.</p>
<p>According to Tomalsky, the hardware and software teams worked in silos to prevent any secrets from leaking out. The software division, which is where Tomalsky worked, was split up into a Web team and an apps team. </p>
<p>Tomalsky told the Times that in the software section, each native iPhone app was basically assigned to one person. His territory was the mobile version of Safari.While each team member worked together on the general software for the first iPhone, each developer had his or her own section to lead.</p>
<p>Creating the keyboard, according to Tomalsky's account, was a hackathon-like competition among employees. Jobs had been unhappy with the prototype keyboards he had seen so far, so he assigned everyone on the software team to solely work on keyboards for a week. When an engineer on Tomalsky's team won, his full-time job became working on iPhone keyboards.</p>
<p>Jobs also demanded that the team create a Maps app for the first iPhone back in 2007. Another engineer on his team, Chris Blumenberg, was given this task to be finished in time for Macworld in January 2007, Tomalsky told the Times:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Within a week he had something that was working, and in two weeks he had something to show at Macworld that we were showing. That was the kind of effect Steve could have ion you: This is important, this needs to happen, and you do it.</p>
<p>Tomalsky left Apple in late 2007 because the company began to feel less like a startup after the iPhone became a hit. He currently focuses on his own mobile gaming startup.</p>

What It Was Like To Create Apps For The First iPhone, According To An Ex-Apple Engineer

<p>Let's parse what exactly <keyword id="6361805" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="NBA">NBA</keyword> general managers mean when they say this year's draft class is "weak." A "weak" class presents no clear cut potential superstars, which makes G.M.'s with top picks nervous.</p>
<p>A "weak" class is not void of talent, however; talent is just more difficult to identify than in other years. </p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">It is no secret that some teams are substantially better at scouting young talent than others, and it shows in postseason. For all that is made during the season about the importance of X's and O's and the "hearts of champions," basketball in particular is a game determined by superior players, and superior players have been picked at nearly every spot in the draft throughout the years. There are </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/19-nba-stars-who-were-drafted-outside-the-top-10-2013-6">plenty examples of great players</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> slipping in the draft, only to make the G.M.'s who passed on them look like bums. </span></p>
<p>In a draft with little separating the top flight prospects from the middle of the pack, a weak draft can be a great one for teams with a keen eye picking in the mid- to late first-round. They stand a great chance at picking players who could end up being seen five years down the road as top ten players in the draft. </p>
<p>With that perspective in mind, here are five players we expect to be taken outside the lottery that will develop into solid players.</p>
<p><strong>Jackie Carmichael, Illinois St., Power Forward</strong></p>
<p>An extremely athletic 6'9" leaper, Carmichael was the big man on campus last season. He averaged 17 points and nine rebounds in the Missouri Valley Conference, twice scoring 22 points against eventual Final Four team Wichita State. In an early season matchup with Louisville, Carmichael posted 20 and nine on 8-13 shooting in a three point loss. A projected second-rounder, Carmichael could be an instant contributor as a rotational player.</p>
<p></p>
<p><strong>Gorgui Dieng, Louisville, Power Forward</strong></p>
<p>A phenomenal passer, Dieng has a 7'4" wingspan which he used to block 2.5 shots per game last season. There are injury and age concerns (he's 23, which teams consider a detriment to the potential development of his game), but there was no denying his impact on last year's National Championship team. Already a strong defender, Dieng showed an ability to knock down the elbow jumper.</p>
<p></p>
<p><strong>Reggie Bullock, North Carolina, Shooting Guard</strong></p>
<p><strong></strong>At 6'7", 200 pounds, Bullock is a knockdown three-point shooter and solid defender. Bullock averaged 14 points and six boards with a 44 percent stroke from downtown. Teams which he was more versatile, but shooting and defense are has paved many an NBA career.</p>
<p></p>
<p><strong>Pierre Jackson, Baylor, Point Guard</strong></p>
<p>One of the most polarizing players in the draft, Jackson is a 5'11" scorer with outstanding court vision. <p><strong></strong>Mitchell simply did not try his sophomore year at North Texas, and it is hard to understand why he didn't enter last year's draft. Freakishly athletic at 6'9", Mitchell shot 44 percent this year after shooting 57 percent in 2012. Nearly every number regressed from an outstanding freshman season when he averaged 15 points, ten rebounds and three blocks. If a team can get Mitchell to play hard every day, he could be an absolute force. </p>

<p dir="ltr">It's a full PC when you need to get work done and a tablet when you want to do casual stuff like browse the web or play a game. Why buy a $1,000 laptop and a $500 tablet when one device can do it all for a little over $900? After all, over 90% of tablet owners still use a laptop.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Plus it's lighter and thinner than the MacBook Air, all while boasting comparable or better specs. There's a brilliant 12-inch touchscreen. A silent fan. A pen for doodling and taking notes.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Doesn't that sound like something you'd want to buy?</p>
<p dir="ltr">It's the same story we've been hearing since Microsoft introduced the first Surface tablets nearly two years ago. Microsoft just did a better job at pitching this time. Unfortunately, that pitch is still an oversell. The Surface Pro 3 pushes us closer to that dreamy all-in-one device, but we're not quite there yet.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The Surface Pro 3 is available for preorder now starting at $799, but you'll need to spend an extra $130 for the optional but essential keyboard cover. (More on that in a bit.) It ships in August.</p>

<h2 dir="ltr">What Is It?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">From a hardware perspective, the Surface Pro 3 is downright impressive. It's a marvel that Microsoft was able to squish all the guts of a full PC into something so thin, light, beautiful, and durable. The screen resolution pops. Slap on the keyboard cover, and you're ready to crank through Office documents and Outlook emails.</p>
<p dir="ltr">It's wrong to compare the Surface Pro 3 to other tablets, especially on price. This is a PC disguised as a tablet, not a tablet pretending to be a PC. And that's why the Surface costs significantly more than your typical tablet. Think of it as a MacBook Air competitor, not an iPad competitor.</p>
<p dir="ltr">At 9.1mm, the Surface Pro 3 is only a hair thicker than the iPhone 5S. Without the keyboard cover, it weighs 1.76 pounds, which is heavy by tablet standards but very impressive for a fully featured PC.</p>

<p dir="ltr">If you buy Microsoft's Surface docking station, you can hook the tablet up to an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse, making it a replacement for your desktop PC, too. It also comes with a special pen that you can use to convert handwriting to plain text and quickly copy and paste items. The pen connects to the Surface via Bluetooth, and a double-click of the button on the end wakes the tablet up and automatically launches OneNote, Microsoft's note-taking app.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The keyboard cover got some improvements, too. The touchpad is bigger and bit more responsive. There's a magnetic strip on the edge that connects to the bottom bezel of the screen, which props the keyboard to a more comfortable typing angle. (Previous versions of the Surface forced you to type flat on the table, which felt awkward.) Microsoft claims that new keyboard angle helps the Surface work better in your lap, too.</p>

<h2 dir="ltr">What's It Like?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">The Surface Pro 3 is the best Windows 8 machine you can buy. But don't take that as a compliment.</p>
<p dir="ltr">When I was in the Boy Scouts in elementary school, I won first place in the "turtle race" at the Pinewood Derby. The slowest car. The best of the worst. I got a trophy and everything.</p>
<p dir="ltr">That's what it feels like calling the Surface Pro 3 the best Windows 8 machine. It's a sad award for being at the top of the lowest class. It's not the hardware that's the problem, but Windows 8. Despite Microsoft's improvements over the last year and a half, Windows 8 is still clunky and difficult to use. You're forced into two operating systems, one for touch and one for the desktop. That also means two web browsers. Two email programs. Two settings menus to slog through. Let a newbie try Windows 8 for 15 minutes and she'll be screaming for the simplicity of iOS.</p>

The Surface Pro 3 is a mediocre tablet and a mediocre laptop. Put those two together, and you have a pricey device that still isn't as ideal as using something more traditional.</p>
<p dir="ltr">That said, if you enjoy Windows 8, you're definitely going to like the Surface Pro 3. It's the first device you should consider buying if you want a Windows machine. I may not think it's the optimal operating system, but if you want a gadget that truly can do everything (although not perfectly), the Surface Pro 3 will work out nicely.</p>
<p dir="ltr">What really bakes my noodle is that Microsoft spent so long trying to persuade everyone that the Surface Pro 3 is a laptop replacement, but still charges you an extra $130 for the keyboard cover. If someone tried selling you a regular laptop without a keyboard, you'd laugh and go spend your money somewhere else. It's like selling a car without wheels.</p>
<p dir="ltr">And the keyboard isn't that great. The keys are plasticky and cheap-feeling. The touchpad is a disaster. Two-finger scrolling is a frustrating mess, and I often found myself randomly highlighting text on web pages when I didn't mean to. Plus, even though Microsoft promised the Surface Pro 3 will sit sturdily in your lap, the keyboard is still too flimsy and nowhere near as good as using a normal laptop.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Battery life was also disappointing. Microsoft claims you can get about 8 hours, but I was only able to get about 5. That's not great, considering laptops like the MacBook Air can get over 10 hours per charge.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The biggest improvement to the hardware is the kickstand. It's now fully adjustable, so you can prop the tablet to whatever angle is most comfortable for you. (The last Surface's kickstand only had two configurations.) It can lay almost flat now, which is probably nice for artists who want to sketch on the device with the pen accessory.<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> In that respect, the Surface Pro 3 matches a regular laptop nicely.</span></p>

The Surface Pro 3 is almost a pound heavier than the iPad Air, and the larger 12-inch screen isn't very comfortable for kicking back on the couch or train so you can casually read an e-book or stream a Netflix movie. If you're looking for a tablet, an iPad, Kindle Fire, or Google Nexus 7 is much better. The Surface Pro 3 is just too big and the battery life is just too weak compared with the competition.</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">Conclusion</h2>
<p dir="ltr">If you like Windows 8 and use Office a lot, then the Surface Pro 3 is the perfect device for you. It's the ideal manifestation of what Microsoft believes Windows 8 should be, and you're going to love it if you buy into that vision.</p>
<p dir="ltr">But for everyone else, Microsoft hasn't fulfilled its promise of building a device that can do it all and do it all well.</p>
<p dir="ltr">That said, there's still hope. The Surface team proved the laptop isn't finished evolving. It showed us that we're inching closer to a world where yes, maybe we don't need to lug around two or more devices when one will suffice.</p>
