Scott Tipton spent on travel while campaigning in the same district for a decade. Before Boebert defeated Tipton in last year's GOP primary for the seat, he claimed a total of $9,797 for travel over 10 years, including airfare, according to The Denver Post.Candidates for federal office are allowed to legally reimburse themselves for miles driven in their personal vehicles using the <a href="https://www.irs.gov/tax-professionals/standard-mileage-rates">Internal Revenue Service's</a> mileage rate. In 2020, the rate was 57.5 cents per mile.Boebert's $22,000 in gas money would mean she drove almost 39,000 miles while hitting the stump in the middle of a pandemic that left many public venues shut down. That's enough gas to cover 14 trips between the Seattle Space Needle and Capitol Hill, or about 1.5 trips around the circumference of Earth.But for all that mileage, The Denver Post found "no publicly advertised campaign events in March, April or July, and only one in May."Boebert split the reimbursements into two payments, with the second one totaling $21,000 on November 11. If she used only the first payment of $1,060 for gas before April, that would mean she put up at least 36,870 miles of campaign travel between the beginning of April and early November.<div type="image" title="Lauren Boebert" height="512" width="1024" msid="80678157" hostid="261"></div>Boebert, who touted her experience as a small-business owner while decrying the waste in Congress, is the owner of Shooters Grill in Rifle, Colorado. In other words, Boebert's reimbursement is worth 890 prime-rib meals (but only on Saturdays when the menu item is available). The representative from Colorado is well-known for her passion for firearms and encourages all of her waitstaff to openly carry guns during working hours. Boebert was criticized in 2015 when a 17-year-old waitress said she was allowed to carry a firearm at work despite being underage.Boebert recently took heat from her colleagues after she tried to flip the results of the presidential election on January 6 when Congress was certifying Electoral Votes. During her objection on the House floor, Boebert said she had supporters outside the Capitol building."I have constituents outside this building right now," Boebert said. Progressive challenger Cori Bush defeats 10-term incumbent Lacy Clay and voters approve Medicaid expansion in Missouri

Steve Watkins was defeated in a high-stakes primary challenge from state Treasurer Jake LaTurner in Kansas' 2nd congressional district on Tuesday. Watkins is the sixth member of the House of Representatives to lose renomination from his own party in the 2020 cycle, following Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-IL), Rep. Steve King (R-IA), Rep. Denver Riggleman (R-VA), Rep. Eliot Engel (D-NY), and Rep. Scott Tipton (R-CO). Kansas' 2nd district encompasses most of the Eastern part of the state, including the capital city of Topeka, the surrounding suburbs, but is otherwise largely rural and agricultural. Watkins, a former US Army Ranger and federal defense contractor, seemingly came out of nowhere to win the crowded 2018 Republican primary with just 22% of the vote. Despite having scant ties to the district and no political experience, Watkins' candidacy was boosted by hundreds of thousands of dollars <a href="https://www.mcclatchydc.com/news/politics-government/election/midterms/article220091655.html">put into the race by his wealthy father.</a>In the general election, Watkins narrowly defeated Democratic nominee Paul Davis, the former Minority Leader of the Kansas House of Representatives and the 2014 Democratic gubernatorial nominee. Throughout his first term, questions still lingered surrounding Watkins' residency status and whether he was even properly registered to vote in the district he represents. On July 14, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/14/us/steve-watkins-voter-fraud-kansas.html">the Shawnee County District Attorney's office charged Watkins</a> with three felony voter fraud charges for voting while not qualified, unlawful advance voting, interfering with law enforcement by making false statements, and one misdemeanor charge for failing to notify the DMV of a change of address. Prosecutors say that in advance of Topeka's 2019 city council elections, Watkins improperly registered to vote and subsequently voted not from his real residential address, but from a UPS store located in a different city council district.<a href="https://www.ksnt.com/elections/new-document-outlines-congressman-watkins-voter-fraud-investigation/">In a sworn affidavit</a>, one of the detectives who investigated the matter said that Watkins falsely led investigators to believe that members of his staff had helped him fill out his voter registration form and made the mistake. Watkins <a href="https://www.kansascity.com/news/politics-government/article244541302.html">admitted to the Kansas City Star</a> that he did, in fact, register and vote at a UPS store, but chalked it up to a confusion-induced error, denied any malicious wrongdoing, and criticized the prosecution as politically motivated. He has temporarily relinquished his House committee assignments while his case plays out in the court system. In the Democratic primary for the nomination, also taking place on August 4, Topeka Mayor Michelle De La Isla is expected to formally secure the Democratic nomination to face either Watkins or LaTurner. While LaTurner isn't as controversial as Watkins, he's posted extremely low fundraising numbers that could also make him a vulnerable nominee in the general election. LaTurner <a href="https://twitter.com/CATargetBot/status/1286404503332257792">reported raising just over $8,600</a> in 2020's second fundraising quarter <a href="https://twitter.com/CATargetBot/status/1283440020104212480">compared to over $122,000 for Watkins</a> and <a href="https://www.kansascity.com/article244268887.html">over $356,000 for De La Isla. </a>Either scenario in Tuesday's primary would have been a win-win for Democrats. If Watkins wins his primary challenge, the controversies surrounding his voter fraud indictment could make him even more vulnerable. LaTurner winning the 2nd district primary will likely make it more difficult for Democrats to flip the seat, but if LaTurner wins, it would allow Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly to appoint a Democrat to serve out the rest of LaTurner's term, ending in 2022. Trump carried the district by 19 points in 2016. In 2018, Kansas' second district was one of the most solidly Republican of the districts that election forecasting and analysis site FiveThirtyEight <a href="https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2018-midterm-election-forecast/house/">rated as a toss-up</a>.While it still certainly favors Republicans, both the relative strengths of the candidates and the national environment being more favorable to Democrats could put the district in play again.
