"If we're fortunate enough to have the majority next year, I'll be the majority leader, I'll decide in consultation with my members what to put on the floor," McConnell told reporters when asked about the plan at his weekly news conference. "And let me tell you what would not be part of our agenda. We will not have as part of our agenda a bill that raises taxes on half the American people, and sunsets social security and Medicare within five years.""That will not be part of a Republican Senate majority agenda," he added. "We will focus instead on what the American people are concerned about: inflation, energy, defense, the border, and crime."Across the Capitol, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy shook his head when asked if his developing midterm agenda would overlap with Scott's game plan. "No matter how much red, white, and blue you wrap around it, there are some real problematic issues that are raised by what's in this plan."The agenda could be used by Republicans who are in tough primary challenges but many of its parts could be "difficult to defend by Republicans trying to unseat Democrats in swing states for the general election," said Ron Bonjean, a former spokesman for Republican leaders in the House and Senate."Why take away the shovel from Democrats who are digging their own hole right now heading into the November elections?" The culture war-stoking blueprint calls for scrapping the Department of Education, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rick-scott-plan-ban-the-box-race-disclosure-government-forms-2022-2">discarding diversity efforts</a> by removing race and ethnicity considerations from government programs, venerating the Second Amendment by shielding "gun rights always, at all costs," sunsetting all federal legislation after five years, clamping down on elections — and battling "wokeism" in general. In his opening letter, Scott warned that his plan "is not for the faint of heart.""It will be ridiculed by the 'woke' left, mocked by Washington insiders, and strike fear in the heart of some Republicans," he <a href="https://rescueamerica.com/overview/">wrote</a>. "These talking points are not something I would have a GOP candidate espouse," he told Insider, adding that Scott's ideas might rally the faithful in a MAGA primary fight or fire up attendees at CPAC "but they are not good for governing a diverse country." Hoagland said he saw some merit in the education, law enforcement and deficit-reduction proposals Scott floated, but poked holes in just about everything else.<ul><li>Abolishing diversity efforts: "Really a nonstarter"</li><li>Cracking down on immigration: "Only plays to the Reagan base"</li><li>Glorifying Trump at the southern border: "Give me a break!"</li><li>Gutting the government workforce: "Unbelievable. Are you going to start with the IRS? TSA? Border Patrol? Coast Guard in Florida?" </li></ul>"They really are pretty far right, very polarizing and will make finding common ground on the issues we confront as a country much more difficult to achieve," Hoagland said of the total package. "If fully carried out they will not make America great, but further divide and split us apart."Steele, Maryland's former lieutenant governor and the first African-American elected to statewide office there, called Scott's "colorblind equality" narrative "silly.""Just because you don't want to see it doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. You can't wish it away," he said. "There are a lot of aspects of this that are just grist for the Trump mill. This is not a GOP, this is not a conservative plan in my view."The plan represents a challenge to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, of Kentucky, who has avoided releasing such a document. McConnell's office did not respond to Insider's request for comment about Scott's vision."The Senate Republican leader sets the tone for the entire conference," Bonjean said. "So it's quite unusual that you have a campaign chairman that's rowing in a bit of a different direction."Insider asked the campaigns of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-rick-scott-elections-2022-midterms-senate-nrsc-chairman-2021-6">15 Senate Republicans up for reelection this November</a> about the utility of Scott's outline and any plans to weave the provocative talking points into voter outreach back home. A campaign aide to Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, who is seeking an eighth term this fall, told Insider that Grassley discussed a variety of topics with constituents during a Wednesday breakfast meeting. The Grassley aide did not address the specifics of Scott's 11-point plan, but said Grassley fielded questions about China "stealing America's intellectual property" (Scott doesn't mention this specifically, but it would likely fit under his "America First" rubric), the COVID-related trucker protest in Canada, accountability for the IRS (Scott proposed slashing the IRS budget and staff in half), and protecting parental rights when it comes to education. The campaign aide said Grassley also bashed Biden for the country's "open border policies" (Scott, too, plays up immigration woes), rising gas prices, and the need to lower the cost of prescription drugs. Scott doesn't touch drug pricing in his manifesto, but Senate Democrats last week mentioned that, and relaxing gas taxes, as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/democrats-midterms-biden-inflation-gas-tax-child-credit-2022-2">inflationary fixes</a> Congress should move on ASAP. Former NRSC chair Phil Gramm praised Scott for stirring things up during an election year."Whether you agree with each and every point he makes, his plan is the kind of big thinking that America needs now," Gramm wrote in a testimonial blasted out by Scott's campaign. <h2>Democrats' feeding frenzy</h2>The <a href="https://twitter.com/TheDemocrats/status/1496238872765865993">Democratic National Committee</a>, Senate Majority Leader <a href="https://twitter.com/SenSchumer/status/1496227524032012288">Chuck Schumer</a> of New York and <a href="https://twitter.com/PressSec/status/1496227216400732168">White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki</a> all pounced on Scott's economic proposal, saying it would raise taxes for working families and seniors. During an interview with <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhJEHloc27Q">Sean Hannity on Fox News</a>, Scott said tax hikes aren't in his plan. However, the plan says: "All Americans should pay some income tax to have skin in the game, even if a small amount. Currently over half of Americans pay no income tax."Liz Mair, a former Republican National Committee online communications director, said the economic portion is "policy-smart, but probably politically-stupid.""It improves my opinion of Rick Scott as a future presidential contender, but I think people whose ideal candidate is Mike Lee or Rand Paul are probably not more than 5% of the party right now, so that may not count for too much," she wrote in an email.

"You know, my parents' finances were one of the main causes of their divorce, and right after that [happened], there was the recession," Gamm told Business Insider. "Those were two reminders within a few years of each other that finance is a serious topic and it's not something I want to leave up to trial and error."
Gamm released his debut <keyword id="35448" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="personal-finance">personal finance</keyword> book, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/More-Money-Please-Financial-Secrets/dp/0452298431" target="_blank">"More Money, Please: The Financial Secrets You Never Learned in School,"</a> on Tuesday. We asked him to share a few tips that every 20-something should learn to master their finances early:
1. Ignore the minimum payments on credit cards. 
The only way you should be using a credit card is by paying off the entire balance every month –– no matter what your minimum balance says. By paying the minimum payment, you’ll wind up leaving a balance on the card and your interest rate will kick in. Minimum payments are calculated to keep you in debt. Ignore the minimum and pay the entire balance, or at least as much of it as you can. 2. Use credit cards for one or two small expenses.
You're young and you're just starting to build up you credit history. So use credit as a useful tool to get there –– not as a free pass for a fancy lifestyle. Do that by picking one or two small expenses each month to charge on your credit card. And try to keep your spending under $100 per month. That’s at least a manageable amount of money to be able to pay off the bill in full. A good rule of thumb: Never spend more than you earn.
3. Prepaid cards are stupid. Don't you forget it.
If you’re looking to build up a solid credit history, you won’t have any luck by signing up for a prepaid debit card. Why? Because none of the activity on a prepaid card is reported to the three credit bureaus (Experian, Equifax and TransUnion). Plus, you’re going to get slammed with fees on prepaid cards like monthly fees, dormancy fees and, get this, a fee just to load money onto the card –– that’s the entire point of a prepaid card!
4. Stop paying bank fees.
The days of free checking are disappearing. And unless you maintain the bank’s minimum balance requirement, which can be $1,000-$1,500, you’re throwing away $10-$12 per month. If you’ve been charged this fee before, consider switching to an online bank or a credit union. You'll find there are either no or fewer fees to deal with. 5. Do yourself a favor and unsubscribe from store emails.
When you get an email from your favorite store letting you know they’re having a sale, this reminds you to head over to the store. If you hadn’t received that email, the store wouldn’t have even been on your mind. Unsubscribe. The same goes for those daily deal sites – unless you’re in the market for something specific (a trip to Europe, new shoes or a restaurant deal), being reminded of random flash sales is a sure-fire way to start spending beyond control. 6. Negotiate a higher salary.
Most of us are too scared to ask for a higher salary. But if you don't, you’re leaving money on the table. Negotiating on your first job out of college might be a tad risky, but don’t feel afraid to ask for more money on future job offers. Plus, negotiating reflects persistence and that “stop at nothing” attitude that employers expect. Do some research in your field to find out what someone at your level is earning, so you'll know whether to ask for more during the hiring process. 7. Face it –– 401(k)s aren’t that into you.
If your employer contributes to your 401(k) (a retirement account that lets you automatically contribute a portion of each paycheck), then you should contribute, too – up to the employer’s match. If you don't, you're basically throwing away free money. If they don’t contribute anything, you might be better off going a different route.
The fees are exorbitant (employers hire large asset managers to take care of the employee’s 401(k) accounts, and that isn’t free). In fact, a survey last year from Demos showed that on average, a couple could spend $155,000 in 401(k) fees over a lifetime. Instead, take ten minutes and open up a Roth IRA online from a discount brokerage firm. This is an account where you contribute money that you’ve already paid taxes on and your money will grow tax-free. Who knows where tax rates are headed (probably up), so get the taxes over with now.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Michael Kellogg has defended the Saudi government and royal family in US courts for 18 years.</li><li>Several people are suing the crown prince, accusing him of murder and hacking attempts.</li><li>Kellogg is criticized for his client choice but remains one of Washington's most admired attorneys.</li></ul>For fledgling lawyers striking out in 1980s Washington, DC, it was hard not to catch wind of Michael Kellogg.Graduating magna cum laude from Harvard <keyword id="6355470" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="law">Law</keyword> School in 1982, Kellogg had clerked for Supreme Court Justice William Rehnquist before moving to New York to work for Rudy Giuliani, then a US attorney, as he prosecuted mafiosos from the Five Families.Back in Washington, Kellogg was scooped up by Charles Fried, the US solicitor general. "I took the task of hiring assistants very seriously, and he had a wonderful profile," Fried told Insider in a recent interview.It was 1987 and the start of what would see Kellogg become one of Washington's most admired, feared, and successful attorneys. Youth and legal prowess aside, it was clear to others that Kellogg was of a bygone era."He's an example of the old-fashioned, truly civilized lawyer who cares for his soul, and for his community," Fried said. Kellogg, Hansen, Todd, Figel &amp; Frederick is now one of the leading boutique firms in the US, known for its eye-watering <a href="https://abovethelaw.com/2015/01/associate-bonus-watch-a-tale-of-two-litigation-powerhouses/">$330,000 signing bonus</a> for new associates who, like Kellogg, clerked for Supreme Court justices.Going alone was a natural progression for Kellogg. "Michael was the leading force when starting his own firm," Roy Englert Jr., a founding partner at Robbins Russell and former colleague of Kellogg, told Insider."It is a leap of faith when you start a new firm, but it's not the Herculean task that some might think it to be if you already have good client contacts and know what you're selling."<h2><keyword id="50996" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Saudi-Arabia">Saudi Arabia</keyword>'s 'clearing house'</h2>One of those clients stands out from the rest in terms of scale and intrigue.For the past 18 years Kellogg, 67, has defended the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its royals in the US at a time when the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/barely-one-in-five-americans-view-saudi-arabia-us-ally-2019-9">American public has ostracized them</a>.Kellogg's relationship with the Saudis began after September 11, 2001, when the families of the 3,000 Americans killed that day sued several Saudi entities for damages totaling more than $5 billion.Lawyers for the plaintiffs say Saudi officials, charities, and businesses in some way supported the work of the terror cell. Saudi Arabia denies involvement in the attack, and <a href="https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/GPO-911REPORT/pdf/GPO-911REPORT.pdf">the 9/11 Commission report</a>, published in 2004, found no involvement by Saudi royals.Kellogg, who was first hired in 2003 to represent the senior royal Prince Turki al-Faisal, labeled some of the early evidence alleging official Saudi involvement in the attacks "<a href="https://www.cozen.com/subrogation/resources/publications/special-report-suing-the-saudis---how-cozen-took-on-a-kingdom-for-9-11-liability-philadelphia-inquirer">complete and utter garbage,</a>" and sought to have the claims dismissed, with some success.The public-relations battle following 9/11 has been more one-sided. Fifteen of the 19 attackers were Saudi, which initially made it hard for the kingdom to distance itself, though America's perception of Saudi Arabia did slowly improve.That lasted until 2017, when Crown Prince <keyword id="2750192" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mohammed-bin-Salman">Mohammed bin Salman</keyword> came to power.<div type="image" title="mohammed bin salman mbs" height="1000" width="2000" msid="81108982" hostid="261"></div>The de facto leader of Saudi Arabia has crushed his opposition with abandon - <a href="https://www.insider.com/families-detained-saudi-activist-princess-tell-biden-pressure-mbs-abuses-2020-12">detaining activists</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/saudi-arabia-ritz-carlton-prison-reopen-as-hotel-2018-1">jailing corrupt royals</a>, and facing claims he <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jeff-bezos-phone-hacked-saudi-crown-prince-mbs-report-explained-2020-1">hacked cellphones,</a> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/saad-al-jabri-saudi-spy-official-sues-mbs-assassination-claim-2020-8">kidnapped minors</a>, and ordered the <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-murder-of-jamal-khashoggi-2019-10">murder of critics</a>.Some of those targets have sued the crown prince in the US, meaning Kellogg's workload has reached colossal levels. As a result, his role has also morphed."Michael Kellogg is a clearinghouse for Saudi matters," one Washington lawyer told Insider, adding that Kellogg effectively served as a quasi-outside general counsel to Saudi leadership, delegating work to other lawyers or taking it himself. This person requested anonymity to speak candidly, but their identity is known to Insider.The list of grievances against Kellogg's clients is long.Last August, Saad al-Jabri, the exiled former head of the Saudi Interior Ministry, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/saad-al-jabri-saudi-spy-official-sues-mbs-assassination-claim-2020-8">accused Crown Prince Mohammed of sending a hit squad to kill him in Toronto in 2018</a>. Kellogg <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/saudi-arabia-mbs-lawsuit-denies-ordering-hit-squad-claims-immunity-2020-12">filed to dismiss al-Jabri's claim</a> in December.In September, the Al Jazeera journalist Ghada Oueiss <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/journalists-under-attack-suing-mohammed-bin-salman-khashoggi-biden-accountable-2021-2">accused him of ordering a hack on her cellphone</a>. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/journalists-under-attack-suing-mohammed-bin-salman-khashoggi-biden-accountable-2021-2"></a>Kellogg is defending the crown prince in this claim.In October, Hatice Cengiz, the fiancée of the murdered journalist <keyword id="1441836" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jamal-Khashoggi">Jamal Khashoggi</keyword>, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/20/us/politics/jamal-khashoggi-fiancee-lawsuit.html">sued Crown Prince Mohammed and other Saudi officials in a US federal court in Washington</a>. As of the publication of this article, lawyers for the crown prince have yet to make themselves known to the court, but Kellogg is widely considered by legal insiders to be among them, if not leading them.In October 2019, the son of a US military helicopter pilot killed by Al Qaeda in Iraq in 2005 also <a href="https://dockets.justia.com/docket/texas/txsdce/4:2019cv04213/1717460">sued Saudi Arabia</a>, accusing it of providing support to the terrorist group. Kellogg moved to dismiss his claims later that year.<div type="image" title="9/11" height="1500" width="3000" msid="81108987" hostid="261"></div>Another suit could be coming. <a href="https://www.breitbart.com/national-security/2019/12/11/hayward-terror-ties-may-allow-pensacola-victims-to-sue-saudi-arabia-under-9-11-law/">It has been suggested</a> that the families of the victims of the December 2019 attack at Naval Air Station Pensacola in Florida - <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fbi-finds-al-qaeda-link-in-nas-pensacola-gunman-phone-2020-5">where a Saudi cadet aligned with Al Qaeda shot dead three Americans</a> - may sue the kingdom.The 9/11 lawsuit is elapsing at a snail's pace, but Kellogg <a href="https://www.supremecourt.gov/Search.aspx?FileName=/docketfiles/08-640.htm">has already successfully</a> defended Prince Turki, who was <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/24/world/middleeast/24saudi.html">accused</a> of helping the kingdom's leadership sign deals with Osama bin Laden that would see Al Qaeda refrain from carrying out attacks on Saudi soil. At a private dinner in 2006, Prince Turki stood up to thank Kellogg, who was in attendance, for "getting me off the hook," <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/politics/2006/05/19/saudi-envoy-reconvenes-fellow-georgetown-alumni-on-the-potomac/d3992ab7-2cd5-4fdb-88f1-b710b9764b1e/">The Washington Post reported at the time</a>.<h2>'How can a guy like this sleep at night?'</h2>Lawyers and law firms who represent controversial clients are often criticized for doing so. Kellogg is no exception, especially when it comes to those who lost loved ones on 9/11."When we speak about Michael Kellogg, the sentiment among many of us is the same: How can a guy like this sleep at night, knowing that he is defending people accused of murdering Americans?" Brett Eagleson, whose father, Bruce, was killed on 9/11 and who is among those suing Saudi Arabia, told Insider.Once, at a courthouse in the Southern District of New York, the relative of a 9/11 victim confronted Kellogg after noticing him in the elevator. That person went up to Kellogg, telling him "one day God will judge him," Eagleson said.In another rebuke, Sarah Lee Whitson, the executive director of DAWN, the organization dreamed up by Khashoggi before his death, told Insider: "Lawyers in the US are prohibited from putting forward false evidence or allowing their clients to perjure themselves, and it's hard to see how Kellogg can avoid this given the facts we already know.""Ethics and law dictate that Mr. Kellogg should urge his Saudi client MBS to remedy the crimes he's committed as minimally as these civil cases allow, rather than aid him in evading justice with lies," she added.<div type="image" title="Jeff Bezos Jamal Khashoggi memorial" height="1499" width="3000" msid="81108988" hostid="261"></div>It has become increasingly common to see lawyers being criticized for their choice of clients. Last November, as the law firm Jones Day <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/staff-at-firms-helping-trump-dispute-election-results-conflicted-nyt-2020-11">represented President Donald Trump's campaign</a> to overturn the results of the US election, protesters <a href="https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/detail/news-photo/demonstrators-hold-up-signs-in-front-of-an-inflatable-giant-news-photo/1285504932?adppopup=true">held signs outside</a> its New York office reading: "Jones Day is killing democracy for profit."For many, attacking legal representatives undermines the very essence of democracy. "It's deeply un-American and deeply inconsistent with our constitution," <keyword id="1470863" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Alan-Dershowitz">Alan Dershowitz</keyword>, an attorney who has represented Trump, <a href="https://www.insider.com/ghislaine-maxwell-deposition-alan-dershowitz-wants-name-unredacted-jeffrey-epstein-2020-10">Jeffrey Epstein</a>, and Harvey Weinstein, told Insider. "Without lawyers there is nothing standing between the government and tyranny."Kellogg is not the type to blur the lines between client and attorney - in fact, he is widely respected for his integrity. "You can keep your distance and do your work, and provide excellent counsel, and cross no lines, and I'm sure that is the case with Michael," said Fried, his former boss.Of the Saudi cases, Fried said: "It doesn't surprise me and it doesn't disappoint me."<h2>The philosopher-lawyer</h2>Kellogg, a native of Atherton, California, was slightly late in committing to the law. His undergraduate degree - philosophy at Stanford University - led to a master's at Oxford University.After that, Kellogg ended his philosophical pursuits in favor of Harvard Law, at least until 2010, when he revived them in a series of philosophy books that, he told Law360, he wrote piecemeal in the hour before starting work each morning."I have never lost the nagging feeling that philosophy still has much to tell us about how we should live our lives," Kellogg wrote in the preface of his 2010 debut, "Three Questions We Never Stop Asking."Kellogg is working through the philosophical canon, having since published "The Greek Search For Wisdom," "The Roman Search for Wisdom," "The Wisdom of the Middle Ages," and "The Wisdom of the Renaissance."These books, according to Fried, are a direct manifestation of Kellogg's conscience: "They were obviously his internal monologues with himself, and his search for wisdom and a good way to live," Fried said.To that end, Kellogg keeps a low profile in the hypersocial, hyperpolitical world of Washington. He has attributed much of his success to his family, thanking them profusely in the prefaces of his books.He and his wife have contributed generously to philanthropic causes in Washington and beyond. From 2006 to 2018, the pair donated as much as $100,000 annually to the International Rescue Committee, records show. Kellogg is also <a href="https://www.edow.org/files/9116/0468/6310/Journal__Directory_2012_LDR.pdf">a member of</a> the Protestant Episcopal Cathedral Foundation, a Washington education foundation set up by Benjamin Harrison, the 23rd US president.Small hints of Kellogg's political allegiances are littered around campaign-funding archives. From 1997 to 2012, Kellogg donated to the election campaigns of the Republicans George W. Bush, Mike DeWine, Phil Gramm, John McCain, and Giuliani, his former mentor, <a href="https://www.opensecrets.org/donor-lookup/results?name=Michael+K+Kellogg">records show</a>. Since 2012, however, Kellogg has backed Democratic candidates, including Tim Kaine, <a href="https://www.fec.gov/data/receipts/individual-contributions/?contributor_name=Michael+Kellogg&amp;contributor_occupation=lawyerwyer">Federal Election Commission filings show</a>.<h2>'A brilliant legal mind'</h2>Back in the professional realm, Kellogg is regarded by his contemporaries as an exceptional lawyer and remains one of the US's foremost telecommunications experts, known for his landmark wins representing AT&amp;T, American Express, and Bell Atlantic.Beyond the victories it is hard to glean much of Kellogg's legal motivations. He has given just one substantial interview, to Law360, and does not comment publicly on active cases. But in that interview Kellogg outlined his approach."My personal style is definitely to be aggressive and blunt and to press hard because, frankly, by the time I'm standing up there I'm absolutely convinced my view is correct, and I'm eager to get the chance to explain to the court why," he said."It's a wonderful aspect of my practice that I'm always representing the client that's right."In his arguments, Kellogg doesn't confuse detail with depth. "So many lawyers think that what you need to do in order to make a point is to say it over and over again," Fried told Insider. "The other way is to say it once, in a way that you don't forget it. That would be Mike's style."Assistants to the solicitor general often help one another prepare their Supreme Court arguments, and Englert, another of Fried's old assistants, told Insider: "He was very, very good." Scott Knudson, a partner at Taft Stettinius &amp; Hollister LLP who overlapped with Kellogg under Rehnquist, said Kellogg was "an excellent writer, and a brilliant legal mind." "A talented singer," Jaffe remembered. "He loved opera."With the lawsuits facing the Saudi crown prince, Kellogg has his work cut out, and his fair share of criticism to shoulder. Yet he has still found the time to be successful and find meaning outside the law.Indeed, in March 2019, Fried, the former US solicitor general, invited Kellogg to return to Harvard and talk to students as a distinguished alumnus."To talk about the life of a lawyer," Fried told Insider. "And how that is not inconsistent with self-reflection and a search for wisdom and a search for virtue."But for Eagleson, the son of the 9/11 victim, Kellogg's choice of client has undermined that search."I think it's unfathomable," he said, "and I think somewhere along the way Michael Kellogg lost his way."
