But where we believe we can make the biggest, most sustained impact is in digital skills," said Scott Beaumont, President, Asia Pacific.<br /><br />For example, Krishne Tassels, an ornamental tassels company led by a husband and wife from Bengaluru, has been able to weather the <keyword id="8902449" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19-pandemic">Covid-19 pandemic</keyword>. <br /><br />When the pandemic began to affect their operations, owners Raghu and Amita developed a new kind of lace that customers can stitch themselves, then uploaded YouTube tutorials to show them what to do, keeping sales up and building a sense of community at the same time. <br /><br />"Every day, I hear more stories like this one, testifying to the resilience and ingenuity of family business owners across the region. We want to help them adjust and succeed as Asia's economies reopen," said Beaumont.<br /><br />While its economic impacts have been widespread, Covid-19 has cast an especially harsh light on entrenched inequalities around the worldincluding in Asia Pacific. <br /><br />"Not everyone in the region has the same access to the opportunities the internet creates, and we're determined to help change that," said the company.<br /><br />Google said it is focusing on three areas: Expanding direct support for small businesses, helping people get digital skills for the economic recovery, and working to make the recovery inclusive. <br /><br />Earlier this week, backed by funding from Google.org and support from ASEAN, <keyword id="5257777" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-Asia-Foundation">The Asia Foundation</keyword> announced a new grassroots programme that will bring skills training to 200,000 people in marginalized communities across Southeast Asia. <br />

Anandan was replaced by Vikas Agnihotri, country director of sales who took on the role of Google India’s interim MD.<br /><br />Gupta had earlier worked with top companies like Hindustan Unilever and Bharti Airtel. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Getty</span></p><p class="caption">Sundar Pichai</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul class="summary-list"><li>On Thursday, <a href="https://theintercept.com/2018/11/29/google-china-censored-search/">The Intercept released a report</a> describing the efforts at <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/google">Google</a> to push aside internal security and privacy concerns over its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/dragonfly">controversial project, Dragonfly.</a></li><li>Dragonfly is a censored search engine being built by <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/google">Google</a> for China.</li><li>According to The Intercept, internal knowledge of the project was extremely limited, and some members of the Dragonfly team were threatened with firing if they failed to follow strict confidentiality rules. </li></ul><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/google">Google</a> executives overseeing a censored search app for China were so worried about employee opposition that they circumvented standard company procedures, shutting out important legal and security staffers from deliberations and even isolating the various teams working on the project from one another. </p><p>So says<a href="https://theintercept.com/2018/11/29/google-china-censored-search/"> a new report from The Intercept</a> about Google's controversial<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/dragonfly"> Project Dragonfly.</a></p><p>The report details the extraordinary steps Google took to keep the project under wraps, going well beyond the typical measures that tech companies often use to prevent leaks about new products. </p><p>"They [leadership] were determined to prevent leaks about Dragonfly from spreading through the company," one of the anonymous sources with knowledge of the project told The Intercept. "Their biggest fear was that internal opposition would slow our operations."</p><p>Executives communicated verbally to eliminate and did not take notes during high level meetings to minimize the paper trail, according to The Intercept. Scott Beaumont, the Google executive leading the Dragonfly project, sought to limit internal privacy and security assessments of the project, and sidelined staffers from important meetings, the report says. </p><h2>"We deserve a say"</h2><p><span>Since news of Google's plans to re-enter China became public over the summer, human rights groups such as Amnesty International <a href="https://theintercept.com/2018/08/28/google-china-censorship-plan-human-rights/">have condemned the project</a>. Internal strife at Google has intensified, coming to a head on Tuesday with a public petition signed by a number of current employees calling for their company to cancel its controversial Chinese search engine project. Last October, however, Google CEO <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-45872965">Sundar Pichai said at a Wired conference in San Francisco</a> that his company was at "very early" stages of development and portrayed it as an experimental project. </span></p><p><span>"What Pichai said [about Dragonfly being an experiment] was ultimately horse shit," an anonymous Google employee told The Intercept. "This was run with 100 percent intention of launch from day one. <p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>As its murky waters continue to flood&#xa0;homes and overwhelm barriers, Tropical Storm&#xa0;Harvey has already set a major&#xa0;record: the most rainfall&#xa0;ever from a single storm in the continental United States.<p>In less than a week, Harvey's rainfall total&#xa0;reached <a href="https://weather.com/storms/hurricane/news/tropical-storm-harvey-forecast-texas-louisiana-arkansas">49.32 inches</a>&#xa0;in Friendsworth, Texas, southeast of Houston. That's&#xa0;about as much rain as&#xa0;the metropolitan region normally sees in a year. As of Tuesday evening, Cedar Bayou, Texas&#xa0;(east of Houston) recorded 51.88 inches, the <a href="https://twitter.com/AP/status/902640282302369794">Associated Press reported</a>.</p><p>The record rainfall has caused&#xa0;the Houston&#xa0;metro area's 2017&#xa0;total to soar - likely above 80 inches, and climbing. Here's how that compares to past years:</p><h2>How the rains got so bad</h2><p>In the&#xa0;56 hours before&#xa0;Harvey made landfall, it&#xa0;transitioned from a tropical depression to a major hurricane. Its move across a pocket of warm water in the Gulf launched it into a Category 4 storm.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Between Saturday evening and Sunday morning, a string of storms east of the center of the hurricane remained over&#xa0;Houston, bringing repeated bursts of rain - <a href="https://theconversation.com/what-made-the-rain-in-hurricane-harvey-so-extreme-83137">up to six inches</a> in some areas.<p>Those storms continued to pour down precipitation through Tuesday evening. The city of Beaumont, for example, received just over an inch of rain in just 26 minutes early Tuesday morning, <a href="https://weather.com/storms/hurricane/news/tropical-storm-harvey-forecast-texas-louisiana-arkansas">The Weather Channel reported</a>.</p><p>Unlike earlier tropical storms, which have generally&#xa0;dissipated or moved, Harvey has been wedged in place by two high-pressure areas which essentially act as buffers.</p><p>"Even compared to other tropical cyclones, the rain from Harvey has been very hard, and gone for a very long time," Russ Schumacher, an associate professor of atmospheric <keyword id="41551" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="science">science</keyword> at Colorado State University, <a href="https://theconversation.com/what-made-the-rain-in-hurricane-harvey-so-extreme-83137">wrote in a post for The Conversation</a>.</p><p>Experts think the storm should head northeast later in the week, however, <a href="https://weather.com/storms/hurricane/news/tropical-storm-harvey-forecast-texas-louisiana-arkansas">as one of those high pressure systems finally gives way</a>. Still, it's not over yet.
