Delhi continued to battle with air pollution for the 10th consecutive day post-Diwali as a dense layer of smog blanketed parts of the national capital on Sunday. Several parts of the national capital recorded very poor air quality levels on Sunday morning as per the data issued by the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR-India). Today morning, Anand Vihar recorded an AQI of 351, Bawana 383, CRRI Mathura Road 323, Dwarka Sector 8 at 341, IGI Airport at 326, ITO 328, Lodhi Road 319, Mundka at 358, Najafgarh at 341, New Moti Bagh at 394, Okhla phase-2 at 339, RK Puram at 368, and Wazirpur at 366, as per SAFAR-India data. As of 5 pm on November 10, Delhi's AQI stood at 334, with Anand Vihar at 353, Dilshad Garden at 262, and Jahangirpuri at 377. For tomorrow, AQI in adjoining cities of Noida and Gurugram is forecasted to be at 208.92 and 77.51, respectively. Multiple visuals from Delhi's Kartavya Path showed the area surrounding India Gate engulfed by a layer of smog. The AQI in the area was recorded at 357 as of 7 am. High-rise buildings were also covered in smog in the Kalindi Kunj and surrounding locality, as the AQI was recorded as 323 in the area. An AQI is considered "poor" between '200 and 300', "very poor" at '301 and 400', "severe" at '401-450," and 450 and above is "severe plus." As the air pollution levels in the national capital reach "very poor," doctors say that even people with no history of respiratory diseases are suffering from breathing issues. Dr. Nikhil Modi, Senior Consultant for Respiratory Critical Care at Apollo Hospital, told ANI that apart from the regular patients, those who haven't had any respiratory issues in the past are showing up with symptoms such as runny noses, sneezing, coughing, and having increasing difficulties breathing. As it is, respiratory illnesses in the national capital are estimated to have shot up by around 15-20%. The Apollo doctor further suggested that the government close the schools for children as they remain vulnerable. Whenever the pollution levels have gone beyond a certain limit, the government has opted to close the schools, Dr. Modi said. "For the last few years, we have been seeing that the government has taken action. Whenever this pollution level has gone beyond a certain limit, they have opted to close the schools. This is important because children are from a vulnerable group. As adults, we are masked and can protect ourselves better, but children usually are not that effectively taking these measures. Secondly, their lungs are still in developing stages, so they are bound to have more harm due to this pollution," the doctor told ANI. Siddharth Singhal, Head of Health Insurance, Policybazaar.com, notes that while most standard health plans in India cover pollution-related ailments, it is always advised to also go for an OPD plan along with a health insurance plan to cover consultations, medications, and diagnostic tests that may be required frequently due to pollution. "Pollution levels in Delhi-NCR and some other parts of India have shot up post Diwali. Effects of this are very evident in the form of sore throats and breathing problems, among others. This can also result in respiratory ailments and chronic conditions like asthma, bronchitis, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), pneumonia, and severe cases of respiratory or bronchial obstruction. Health insurance becomes critical to cover such expenses. Most policies typically cover emergency hospitalization for respiratory issues like asthma or COPD exacerbations requiring ICU or critical care," he adds.

Some landlords are subdividing larger units to offer space to a mix of smaller businesses."There's just so many amazing concepts out there," she said.Some of the real estate investment trusts, or REITs, that are landlords for the drugstore chains see other potential uses for the spaces."They're good spots for urgent cares," John Albright, CEO of Alpine Income Property Trust, a REIT that counts Walgreens as a tenant, said on an earnings call in July. Others, such as restaurants, would require kitchens and other expensive renovations."They have ranges of sizes and formats, and you can't just say, 'Well, we'll just convert them all to pickleball courts or urgent care,'" he said.A CVS spokesperson said 95% of the company's closing locations are leased, while 5% are owned."We make every effort to market available properties and find new tenants as soon as possible. The surveyed states included Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.Among the states, Harris performed the strongest against Trump in Georgia (51% to 47%) and Wisconsin (50% to 47%), while Trump had his biggest advantages over Harris in Arizona (49% to 46%) and North Carolina (50% to 47%).The remaining states are even tighter: Harris led by two points (49% to 47%) in Pennsylvania and Michigan, while both candidates were tied (48% to 48%) in Nevada.Despite the millions of dollars being pumped into each state, which for voters comes through mostly in the form of ads, the nature of the race hasn't changed. It's why Cheney has already joined Harris on the campaign trail in Michigan and Wisconsin, where the pair have emphasized issues pertaining to the preservation of democracy.The vice president's two-and-three point leads in Michigan and Wisconsin, respectively, are within the margins of error. And both campaigns know this race will likely be decided by the slimmest of margins, with every attainable voter wielding immense power in a region where the economy and abortion rights will also play critical roles in the race.<h2 id="280dc947-72bc-458f-8b66-8cf922d82a73">Warning signs in the Sun Belt</h2>Trump is looking to flip Arizona and Georgia, states that he won in 2016 but lost to now-President Joe Biden in 2020. And he's campaigning to keep North Carolina in his column and potentially become the first Republican presidential nominee to win Nevada since George W. It's a positive sign for Trump, who has campaigned extensively throughout the state.In the poll, Harris is earning the support from roughly 74% of Black voters, a robust figure. But it's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.cnn.com/election/2020/exit-polls/president/georgia">well below</a> the 88% support that Biden received from Black voters in Georgia four years ago. And the poll also showed that nearly 18% of Black voters remained undecided, in a state where Black voters could make up roughly 30% of the electorate or more.Also, despite Trump's lead in the survey, he only had a two-point advantage with voters aged 65 and older, a group that's generally been strong for him. Harris' competitiveness with Trump among older voters is a reminder that Georgia may have been a conservative bastion in the past but it's now highly competitive.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>School calendars are often shared as PDF files, lengthy written documents, or even images.</li><li>I used AI to turn my school's PDF calendar into something I could add to my Google Calendar.</li></ul>Anyone responsible for a school-aged child has dealt with the nightmare task of the school calendar. School calendars are often formatted as a PDF, image, or Word doc — and are often incredibly mobile-hostile. Trying to find it on the school's website or in your email (why do schools send everything as attachments?! ugh!) is a nightmare when you need to look up whether your kids have school on President's Day.If you've never been caught slackjawed when your child informs you that they have a half day that day, I salute you. The rest of us, we're out here sweating and scrambling and dedicating 30% of our brain cells to juggling a school calendar along with the after-school activities calendar, the endless forms that need to be filled, making sure that the yellow shirt is washed before the color day of Spirit Week. (This work, of course, is more often done by moms).I understand that public schools are in the business of educating, not web design. Revamping the clunky calendar formats and websites are not a top funding priority. So I'm ready to roll up my sleeves and do it myself.Well, sort of. I want <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-use-chatgpt-at-work-job-save-time-ai-2023-2">AI</a> to do this for me.I was inspired last week by Dan Seifert, a former reporter at The Verge and now Google employee, who posted on Threads about how he used AI to take the Word doc with his child's school calendar and pop those dates into his Google cal with just a few moves.This, to me, was the dream.Seifert described how he did this using his <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/best-google-pixel-phone">Google Pixel</a> phone. I reached out to Seifert, but he wasn't authorized to speak on the record in detail about this. Since I don't have a Pixel, his exact method wasn't going to work for me, but I am grateful for his inspiration.After about two hours, three separate LLMs (ChatGPT, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-ai-gemini-bard">Gemini</a>, Claude), and a lot of frustration, I finally was able to get this to work. To test further, I tried out my methods for two other friends and their school calendars and got it to work for them, too. Some tweaking was required to deal with one weirdly formatted calendar, but I was still able to get it there. Triumph!Since I have suffered, I am pleased to spare you all and tell you how I did it so you can, too.<h3 id="037236f3-c580-4600-99c4-3d8f8f70b15b">A few caveats:</h3><ul><li>I am not a master of AI by any means, and there may be a much better way to do this. I'm happy to hear any suggestions you might have to streamline it.</li><li>I was using the free versions of these LLMs; its possible that the more powerful paid versions could do this better.</li></ul><h3 id="43dfa2c7-df5b-4b8c-995d-61afe4adb3aa">Here were my steps:</h3>Step 1: Get your school calendar. This can be a PDF, a screenshot of the calendar, or a copy-and-paste of all the text from a written document.Step 2. Use ChatGPT to read the PDF or image and turn it into plain text.Prompt: "I have a PDF of a school calendar with a list of dates. Please take this PDF and turn it into a text list of all the dates and their descriptions."Step 2. Turn that plain text into a Google Calendar-friendly CSV file. This might take a few tries to massage it to get it in the exact right format for Google Cal. You might have to ask it to make sure the dates go first.Prompt: "Can you take that list and turn it into a CSV file with the dates in the YYYY-MM-DD format that's ready to import into Google Calendar?"Step 3. Download the .txt version it provides, or copy and paste it into a text editor.Tip: I found that <a target="_blank" href="http://Claude.ai">Claude.ai</a> was better at this step than ChatGPT or Gemini. Claude could also create a downloadable version, which saved me a step of having to paste and save it myself.Step 4. In Google Calendar, create a new calendar with the + sign next to "Other calendars" (located in the left rail if you're on a desktop). Name it "School calendar" or whatever.Tip: Share it with your partner so they can never claim they didn't know that random Tuesday was closed for "Teacher Development Day."Step 5. Import your .txt file into Google Calendar. Go to Settings &gt; Import &amp; export &gt; Import. Upload the file from your computer and select the calendar for import. If it gives an error message or says 0 events added, you'll need to go back and fiddle with the formatting again from Step 2.Step 6. Be satisfied with yourself for being a master of efficiency. Congratulations.<h3 id="5122d1a6-68cf-4e55-8474-1032bfecd987">A few things you should know</h3>This wasn't as simple as I hoped. It took a little trial and error, and some of the LLMs couldn't do all of the steps on their own, which is of course, incredibly frustrating.For some reason, Gemini fared the worst of all of these at being able to do this. It also strangely gave me the wrong information about how to use Google products. For example, it told me at first it could read a PDF in my Google Drive, but then later told me it wasn't allowed to access Google Drive files.It also gave me bad instructions when I asked about how to add all these dates to Google Calendar (it suggested creating a single event and putting all the plain text in the description) instead of telling me how to import a file. I assumed that Google's Gemini would be better at helping with other Google products, but not quite.I imagine that Google (and others) will be making this workflow much easier very soon. This seems like the ideal use of AI as a productivity tool: "I have a document in my Gmail or Drive with a list of dates. Please add all those dates to my calendar." That's the magic that you want AI to do.And yes, there are companies out there specifically working to help families manage this annoying task of managing the calendar. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.ohai.ai/">Ohai</a> is an app aimed at moms that acts as an assistant that can help with calendar management as well as other tasks (it's $27 a month and looks promising, although I haven't tested it myself).There's also the<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.skylightframe.com/"> Skylight calendar</a>, a $300 digital calendar touch screen device (there's also a $600 larger wall size coming out this fall). My editor, Hayley Peterson, just got one for her family and says she loves it.But I have a feeling that all this hassle will be moot by the start of the next school year. When the new iPhones have their fancy new Apple Intelligence and other AI models have grown even more powerful, I imagine that all this will be as simple as a few taps on our phones, with no hassle of importing a .txt file (shudder).I know people are worried that AI might replace our jobs, swarm us with misinformation, and harm us in ways we haven't even predicted yet. I am worried, too. I don't use AI much at work (I wrote all these words with my own two fingers). But I am also really, really happy to make this tool actually do something that improves my life in this small way.

The move comes as Prime Minister <keyword id="19901698" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Giorgia-Meloni" source="keywords">Giorgia Meloni</keyword>’s government explores innovative ways to close the country's digital skills gap, which remains one of the widest in the European Union. Starting this academic year, AI-powered learning tools will be tested in 15 classrooms across four regions in Italy. Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara announced the initiative, stating that AI technology will act as a “virtual assistant” for both students and teachers. The AI systems will be integrated into classroom tablets and computers, helping students grasp complex topics more easily while assisting teachers in delivering a more personalised learning experience. “The goal is to introduce AI tools that can create tailored educational methods, providing a bespoke learning experience,” Valditara told the TGcom24 news channel. If successful, the programme will be expanded to more schools in the future. <h2>AI in classrooms in the UK</h2>Italy isn't the only country that is planning to bring AI in the classroom. Recently, the UK government also unveiled a £4 million ($5.2 million) initiative aimed at integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into classrooms, with the goal of transforming how teachers planned lessons and marked student work. Announced on Wednesday this week, the "first-of-its-kind" project seeks to modernise the education system by using AI tools to create tailored teaching materials and ease administrative burdens on educators. The UK’s science and education departments highlighted that the generative AI tools developed through this project significantly aided teachers. My parents find great fulfillment in their profession. Even though they've been practicing medicine for over three decades, they still love doing it.But it was also my parents who tried to dissuade me from pursuing a career in medicine. They told me some horror stories about what being a doctor was really like and warned me about how taxing it could be.However, I remained deeply inspired by their careers and decided to press on.<h2 id="057884fe-aeb2-4118-83a4-7e24bf33ddff">Medical school was fun but grueling</h2><div type="image" title="Faith Choo (right) and her best friend (left) in their graduation gowns." height="640" width="853" msid="112508673" hostid="261" sizebytes="24162"></div>The first two years of medical school felt like high school all over again. There was lots of studying as well as material to memorize.Things got a lot more exciting but taxing from the third year onwards. That was when we got to shadow junior doctors at the hospital. We also had to spend full working days in the hospital before going home to study at night.It dawned upon me then that we would be taking over from those junior doctors in just a few years. The burden and responsibility of having to take care of patients began to weigh on me.Back then, our seniors in medical school would warn us about life after graduation. They would tell us about the terrible working hours that came with being on call, like having to work for two days straight without rest.I began to worry if I could live up to the challenge. I remembered asking myself, "Can I physically cope with this? Can I mentally step up to this kind of challenge? Do I have the resilience and skills required to do this?"<h2 id="6ed811d4-3c8e-43dc-a69f-33e37017a9e8">Confronting the long hours and feelings of burnout</h2><div type="image" title="Faith Choo sitting at her desk with her stethoscope and medical devices sprawled across the table." height="768" width="1024" msid="112508671" hostid="261" sizebytes="30394"></div>Before college, I did hospital attachments and worked with general practitioners at their clinics. But even that wasn't able to give me a full taste of the role.The biggest transition that came after graduation was the long hours. It wasn't long before the exacting routine, manpower constraints, and feelings of burnout began to pile up on me.The thought of leaving first crossed my mind after I clocked 19 consecutive days of work in the hospital.At some point, you feel like you are more tired than the patients in the hospital. Even the patients get a chance to rest, but for doctors, when you're on a call, you have to make life and death decisions.You are still held to a high level of accountability and you want to do the best for your patients, but you physically can't because you are just so exhausted — and it doesn't feel safe.I realized then that such a job wouldn't be sustainable.<h2 id="a9359a95-2687-4c13-b021-1daaf23c14a7">Life as a medical graduate in Singapore ain't easy</h2>In Singapore. our medical education is <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.moh.gov.sg/hpp/all-healthcare-professionals/career-practice/CareerNPracticesDetails/medical-dental-undergraduate-agreement">heavily subsidized</a> by the government. After graduation, students have to fulfil a service bond of five years. This is on top of the one year of housemanship that takes place right after graduation.Junior doctors could put in about 60 hours of work in a good week, though that can sometimes go up to 80 or 90 hours.This means that you could find yourself spending a huge part of your late twenties to thirties working just to fulfil your bond obligations.This wasn't going to work for me. I didn't think I was physically or mentally able to get through that journey.Even though breaking my bond and leaving then would entail paying back over $375,000 — roughly $75,000 per year.I felt that there was no use destroying my long-term health for money, which could be made back.Surprisingly, my family, friends, and colleagues were supportive of my decision to leave. I also received overwhelming support for the move when <a target="_blank" href="https://chasingfaithandlove.com/2022/07/22/the-great-resignation-part-1/">I blogged about it</a>.<h2 id="4c4127f8-5e15-43de-90c2-8244b3c0f48d">Taking a career break and charting a new course</h2><div type="image" title="Choo went on a career break after leaving the public healthcare system in July 2022." height="2268" width="3024" msid="112508672" hostid="261" sizebytes="754682"></div>After resigning in July 2022, I took a career break to recover from the burnout and traveled for about three months.I now split my time between working as a locum doctor and studying for my graduate diploma in mental health. I'm not craving for a full-time role at this point because I enjoy the freedom that comes with being a locum.For instance, I can just take leave and go off whenever. I also get to choose between working in a clinic or as a telemedicine physician.That said, I wouldn't mind pursuing new ventures that delve into my areas of interest like lifestyle medicine or mental and preventive health.The truth is, I don't think it's easy for governments around the world to tackle the problem of burnout and exhaustion in healthcare.Younger doctors now want work-life balance, and they're not afraid to speak up about it. We know that we can't set ourselves on fire to keep others warm.

I gave up my dream of being a doctor at a local hospital just one year out of medical school. That decision cost me close to half a million dollars, but it was worth it.

It has been edited for length and clarity.It was a cold morning on December 1st when I got to school after nearly a week off <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/history-of-thanksgiving-2017-11">celebrating Thanksgiving</a>. Before the day started, a group of us gathered in the lobby of the school to pray. I was particularly nervous about an exam I had to take in the first period.As students filtered into the lobby, I recognized everyone. It was a small school, and I knew everyone's first name. Even the boy <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mom-sends-her-kids-school-worryingthey-could-be-in-shooting-2023-2">who would very soon shoot me</a>, Michael.As we said "Amen," I heard what I thought were firecrackers. Maybe it was a prank, I thought. My friend Nicole fell to the floor. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/takeoff-killing-woman-shot-in-head-calls-incident-scary-movie-2023-1">Had she just been shot in the head</a>? I couldn't understand what was happening. I felt in a state of shock, trying to make sense of what I was seeing.Guns weren't even on my radar. It was a completely safe school — some would say <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/safest-college-campuses-in-america-2016-1">the safest school</a> of all the high schools in our area.As I was trying to figure out what was going on, my entire body went numb as I heard a spray of that same sound. It must not have been firecrackers. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jd-vance-doesnt-like-school-shootings-are-fact-of-life-2024-9">It must have been a gun</a>. There was a ringing sound inside my ears, and I dropped to the floor. The impact of the fall didn't even hurt.<h2 id="9638557f-ac8c-46de-9a98-5b672573ec51">I was shot</h2>My twin sister, Mandy, was right there with me, crawled to me, and said there had been a gun. She said Michael had been the shooter.I knew Michael well enough to consider him a friend. We were <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/marching-band-we-cheer-for-everyone-do-that-in-life-2023-2">in band together</a>. I was a sophomore, and he was a freshman.I learned later that Michael had dropped the gun, and when he did, the prayer group leader asked him what he was doing. He couldn't give an answer. He put down the gun and asked the prayer leader to shoot him, which he wouldn't do. Eventually, one of the staff took Michael to his office.Later, Michael would go on to say he had been bullied and had voices in his head that told him to go on a rampage. He had used guns in a friend's garage.<h2 id="8460f011-b6df-46d8-8c60-bc40c314e5c5">I couldn't move</h2>Lying on the ground, unable to move, I was still in shock. Mandy said to me: "Be strong. Don't die."My algebra teacher came over to me and told me I wasn't going to die. I told her I was paralyzed, but she told me I wasn't, but I'm sure she knew I was and was just trying to keep me from going into further shock.I was being told to keep my eyes open, but eventually, I couldn't help close them.When I woke, next to me, I could see my friend Jessica, who had been shot too. A teacher was holding her, saying over and over that Jessica wasn't going to make it.Jessica later died, as did Nicole and Kayce.I was taken to the hospital, where I would stay for much longer than the others who were injured in the shooting.<h2 id="ccec00f8-2a63-492f-9cf6-6a1c380f5f0a">I felt lonely</h2>Lying flat on my back, I felt lonely at times. Everyone had returned to school, but I was alone for hours each day. I just wanted to go home.News organizations came to the hospital to ask me what happened, and I remember it feeling like therapy.When I finally returned to school, it was like what had happened had been part of a movie. Although I wasn't diagnosed with PTSD, I know I had it. The sound of gunfire has always taken me back to that lobby. Our school offered students group counseling to work through the impact of the shooting, where we learned to cope with what had happened to us.I was asked to speak to a group of students about what had happened. It was the first time I realized that speaking about it was a form of healing. I would go on to speak about the shooting for years to come.Becoming paralyzed on that day could have led to a lifetime of anger and resentment. But on the day I was shot, I forgave Michael, making a choice to be happy. I couldn't control what happened to me on that December day in 1997. But I could control my response to it. I talked to myself rather than listened to my emotions.All my life, I've never been an angry person. Anger is exhausting for more. If I were to let what happened to me — to dwell on it and let it control me — I wouldn't be a happy person. By choosing to forgive Michael, I chose happiness. I chose to forgive him for myself. It doesn't mean that I'm always positive; I'm not. But it has given me back control over my own mindset, rather than being controlled by my anger at Michael.Decades later, I'm starting to experience the frustration of my disability. My two children sometimes take care of me more than I take care of them. I have a lot of physical health issues from years of being in a wheelchair. I feel the aggravation, and then I choose to move on and remind myself that things could be worse.

I was paralyzed from the chest down by a school shooter at 15. I chose to forgive him.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A doctor shortage is projected to hit 86,000 by 2036. Rural communities already feel the impact.</li><li>Educational initiatives and congressional bills aim to combat issues like limited appointment slots.</li></ul>Every three to four months, Mellisa Case drives three and a half hours from her small town of Prineville, Oregon, to Portland to see her orthopedist for help with arthritis, a condition she believes she could have avoided at this stage in her life.In 2021, Case had surgery for a meniscus tear at an orthopedic center in Bend, an hour away from her home. However, she couldn't schedule appointments for follow-up care, which doctors consider necessary for proper recovery. For several months after her meniscus surgery, Case kept calling the center for an appointment with no success while her knee deteriorated.Now Case takes time off from work and spends up to $125 round trip on gas while traveling to Portland for arthritis care. Case said that symptoms like stiffness, swelling, and discomfort — which resulted from a lack of postsurgical medical support — could interfere with her sleep, gait, and ability to enjoy her hobbies like hiking and gardening."Until you've experienced not being able to see a doctor, you don't really realize how frustrating it is," Case, who is 53, told Business Insider. Eventually, she will need surgery for a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nc-woman-plans-finally-getting-knee-surgery-after-winning-lottery-2023-1">full knee replacement</a>.Case said that she remains concerned that the overall lack of medical care in her community, as she's observed doctors retiring or leaving her area.Some of her family members and friends also struggle to find physicians close to home, Case said, so they have to drive long distances or wait for appointments.A March report from the Association of American Medical Colleges projected that the US would face a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-hospital-wait-times-are-bad-physician-shortage-low-pay-2024-4">physician shortage</a> of up to 86,000 specialists and primary-care doctors by 2036.Michael Dill, the organization's director of workforce studies, said this estimate was conservative."The country needs hundreds of thousands of doctors to provide an equal amount of care to everyone, including minorities, those without medical insurance, and people living in rural areas," he told BI.An aging population, physician retirement, and the administrative challenges of running a practice contribute to the shortage and disproportionally affect vulnerable populations such as older people, those lacking transportation options, and people with disabilities, public-health advocates told BI.Two solutions could be increasing medical-training programs in rural communities and passing legislation to retain and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-high-paying-jobs-hiring-doctors-construction-accounting-2024-4">bolster the physician workforce</a>.<h2 id="0a289233-786f-4ff1-969a-24da2c3ab5eb">An aging population and provider burnout are contributing to a worsening doctor shortage</h2>The effects of a doctor shortage are already here, Dr. Bruce Scott, the president of the American Medical Association, said.Scott practices in Louisville, Kentucky, and said that in addition to patients in rural areas driving hours to appointments, they're waiting months to see a doctor.Various factors, including an aging population, play a part in the situation, Dill said.In 2020, 55.8 million Americans, or 16.8% of the population, were 65 or older, and by 2030, all baby boomers will have reached age 65, according to a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.census.gov/library/stories/2023/05/2020-census-united-states-older-population-grew.html ">US Census report.</a> As people age, they require more physician services, such as cardiologic or neurological care, and at the same time, doctors are aging and retiring, adding to the shortage, Dill said.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/labor-shortage-hospital-beds-empty-nurses-doctors-staff-covid-vaccine-2021-10">Physician burnout</a> further exacerbates the problem, Scott said. In one survey that was part of AMA Organizational Biopsy report, of over 12,400 doctors, 48% of respondents said they were burned out. In another survey from the same report, one in three respondents said they planned to retire or reduce hours within two years.One AMA survey found some doctors were leaving their practices because they were being paid less to handle more <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electric-health-records-causing-doctor-burnout-2018-12">administrative burdens</a>, such as spending 12 hours a week filling out prior-authorization requests. "Medicare is paying us nearly 30% less in 2024 than it did in 2001, when adjusted for inflation," Scott said, citing further data compiled by the AMA.<h2 id="1d068686-c4d6-4ee0-81d9-f17918ad516a">Strategies to alleviate the shortage</h2>To help alleviate the physician shortage in rural areas, medical students need to receive training there, said Molly Fox, the vice president of institutional advancement at Kansas Health Science University."We engage students with the rural community because we know that people tend to practice where they feel connected," Fox said.At KHSU's Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine, for example, third- and fourth-year students can complete clinical rotations at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, four hours from Wichita, where the university is.Chase Hearn, a third-year student, said he'd seen doctors at the hospital who have worked 26-hour shifts to meet patient needs."I've also heard patients say they can't take a day off work to travel 200 miles to see their OB-GYN," Hearn said. He added that his training had strengthened his resolve to practice in a rural community but that he anticipated challenges, like burnout and working with patients who lack consistent access to care.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-el-paso-trying-solve-us-physician-shortage-2023-7">Rural residency programs</a> are also needed to address the shortage, Dill said. Only 2% of residency training occurs in rural areas, the US Government Accountability Office says.A residency program through Oregon Health &amp; Sciences University aims to alleviate the doctor shortage in three central-Oregon counties, including Crook County, where Case lives. The program is training physicians in primary care, family birthing, emergency medicine, behavioral health, and hospital medicine.According to the Rural Medical Training Collaborative, 133 rural residencies in family medicine and 69 rural-track programs are recruiting for 2025 enrollment, along with 30 internal-medicine residencies and 16 psychiatry residencies.Several pieces of legislation have also been introduced to Congress to address the doctor shortage. Scott said bills to adjust Medicare payments for doctors — no matter where they practice — to the annual rate of inflation and rules to reduce the need for prior authorization could help ease administrative burdens.Some legislation, if passed, would specifically influence rural areas.For example, HR 7855, the Association of American Medical Colleges-endorsed Rural Residency Planning and Development Act of 2024, would codify the Rural Residency Planning and Development Program, which funds the startup costs of residency training in rural areas, Dill said. From 2019 to 2024, the program has enabled the launch of 46 accredited rural residency programs across 38 states and Puerto Rico.Hollie Davis Frick, an immigration lawyer for Wintersteen Patel Law Group, said congressional action could easily incentivize doctors born abroad and who receive advanced medical training in the US to remain here and practice in rural areas."Many doctors who come here for residencies and fellowships return abroad because of our ineffective immigration policies," Davis Frick said.If passed, S 665, the Conrad State 30 and Physician Access Reauthorization Act, would allow state health departments to sponsor additional visa waivers for foreign-born doctors who agree to practice in underserved areas within those states.While Case remains skeptical that doctor-training initiatives and legislation will directly affect her community anytime soon, she considers herself fortunate, she said."I have the ability to drive, afford travel expenses, and pay for out-of-network doctors," Case said. "Not everybody does."

Medical schools and legislation aim to address a worsening doctor shortage that's already hitting rural communities 

<ul class="summary-list"><li>I'm a Yale student, and I just toured Oxford for the first time while studying abroad.</li><li>The famous school is the inspiration for Yale, so I recognized some of the architecture.</li></ul>As a sophomore at Yale, I'm no stranger to a large, beautiful, ancient-looking college campus. I'm a student of Yale's Saybrook College, which occupies the Memorial Quadrangle. This is the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/successful-ivy-league-college-application-look-insider-2024-5">Ivy League school's</a> best example of collegiate gothic architecture.Every day, I wake up to Sterling Memorial Library right outside my window. I can see the awe-inspiring Harkness Tower rising in the background behind my <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/college-food-best-dining-halls-2017-8">dining hall</a> and feel transported into a different time.When I first <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/yale-university-freshman-dorm-room-college-student-2023-12">toured Yale</a>, it felt like I encountered the sublime for the first time. I figured I would experience that feeling again.However, over the summer, while <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/more-american-students-avoid-debt-studying-abroad-college-europe-2024-10">studying abroad</a> in London, I had the opportunity to spend a day wandering around the streets of Oxford and Oxford University. I got to have that same magical experience all over again — magnified.<h2 id="2b1f426f-e1b8-4bcb-9d8c-ccb5edfe5839">I took a tour of the schools at Oxford</h2><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/yale-student-study-abroad-grad-school-masters-2024-10">Oxford University</a> consists of over 30 individual schools or colleges. I was most familiar with All-Souls College at Oxford, but that school was closed to tourists for the month of August. However, I was able to walk around the famous Magdalen College.At Yale, a tour of a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/single-mother-professor-raised-daughters-college-campus-community-family-2024-3">residential college</a> might last around 10 minutes if you keep a good pace, so I didn't expect to spend the better part of an hour at Magdalen. But that's precisely what happened. Magdalen College was massive. It had two large green spaces and overlooked a segment of the River Cherwell where tourists were punting (riding in small boats called punts).I also toured the Radcliffe Camera, arguably the most famous building and my favorite. It's a massive, baroque temple-like building that is a bit imposing.<h2 id="22b2b9d4-a83d-41bc-b806-6d7220577ad2">It's clear that Oxford inspired Yale</h2>When I took the trip out to Oxford, I expected the campus to feel a bit like home. Once there, I felt like I was walking around the ideal of Yale itself — what my school strived to be and emulate.Oxford University is much, much older than Yale. While we are very proud of our 1701 charter date, Oxford was started at least 500 years before that. As a result, the university dominates the town surrounding it in a way that Yale — even as the biggest employer and contributor to the wealth of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/visited-madison-connecticut-things-to-do-great-beach-town-2024-11">New Haven</a> — doesn't.Yale attempts to recreate Oxford in many ways — albeit in a somewhat confined space. Architecturally, of course, Yale's collegiate gothic architecture is a revival of the original <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gothic-inspired-interior-halloween-decor-dark-macabre-design-meet-owners-2023-2">Gothic style</a>, in which many buildings in Oxford were constructed.<h2 id="66622b96-c6c4-4503-9629-17840fecd6c6">Oxford's surrounding town is drastically different than New Haven</h2>A big difference between <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/exercise-makes-you-happier-than-money-says-yale-and-oxford-study-2019-4">Oxford and Yale</a> was the nature of the towns surrounding the schools.Yale's New Haven is a proper <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-cities-with-cheaper-than-average-rent-south-midwest-inflation-2024-11">American city</a> and feels like it. Everything is on a nice grid layout, and we are surrounded by American convenience. It feels like home.While Oxford is a city, it feels like one that has been around for centuries. Even before I got to the school, cobblestone pedestrian paths, and winding alleyways made me feel like I was in a different era. The city leans toward this impression; many shops play into the medieval university feel, which I loved.<h2 id="cc3dc4a5-e7ea-4ecb-89b1-80d0cdc62d73">I can see myself at Oxford in the future</h2>As I left Oxford for London, I was left in awe of the city and the university. Of course, it's still an active university in a 21st-century town, but it was incredibly well preserved. If you looked at the Radcliffe Camera against the backstop of the university church at just the right angle, you could feel teleported back centuries.Although I have a long way to go and a lot can change, I can definitely see myself going to Oxford for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/daughter-graduated-high-school-didnt-enroll-college-2024-10">graduate school</a>. Even if that doesn't happen, I know I will return to Oxford for another tour. I can't wait to go back.

Well, not with my parents — but with my husband and young kids in a home that backs up to my parents', in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-san-francisco-mansion-presidio-heights-2020-2">Presidio Heights in San Francisco</a>.Our homes open to adjoining <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/beautiful-gardens-2018-6">private gardens</a> connected by a gate. A weathered, carved wood sign, a Christmas gift from my kids, points the way to Gigi and Papa's.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/living-multigenerational-home-lessons-pateince-openness-death-2024-3">Intergenerational living</a> is nothing new, but our approach to it is. I don't know anyone in San Francisco who has a living situation like ours, but it works for our family.<h2 id="45d377d8-cfa2-4a8d-8e48-d56bc4fdf622">There are many perks</h2>The perks are many: <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/i-saved-childcare-costs-by-swapping-babysitting-with-a-mom-2021-10">free babysitting</a> for date nights, someone to watch the kids at the drop of a hat, and my parents taking the kids to school each morning. When we leave town, we don't have to look far to find a pet sitter or hire someone to water the garden and fetch the mail.What's more critical for us is that our kids have authentic, quotidian <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lessons-learned-living-with-my-jewish-grandparents-2021-12">relationships with my parents</a>. They don't just get together for holidays and special occasions. They know each other in a natural, casual, everyday way — an opportunity few modern families have. This is particularly important to my husband and me as his parents are deceased and will never know our kids.It's not that I've never moved out and had some kind of epic failure to launch. I left home at 14 for prep school and lived abroad and all over for college and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/undergrad-vs-grad-school-pros-cons-cost-specialty-social-life-2024-2">graduate schools</a>. When my husband and I were living in LA and knew we wanted children, we moved back to SF to be close to family.Having two extra sets of hands in our lives to share the load is a tremendous help.<h2 id="ae5c7a22-5c96-4ab1-b7de-72c77918f004">But there are also drawbacks</h2>As you might imagine, there are drawbacks. Not everyone wants to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/my-in-laws-expect-me-to-clean-their-house-advice-2020-12">live with their in-laws</a>. My husband is a good sport, and my parents respect our space and independence. Nevertheless, it's been more challenging to establish myself as a parent and head of my own separate household. Free childrearing advice often comes whether we like it or not.Establishing boundaries between our homes has been an imperfect process. One rule is while the kids can come and go from either house as they please, my parents must ask to come into our home.A month before the pandemic hit in 2020, we moved in.
