To tackle this situation, the Delhi government has proposed that a 29 km long elevated road be constructed between Wazirabad and IGIA, which would reduce travel time taken by North Delhi residents to around half an hour. The plan, which was presented before <keyword id="6365413" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="lg-anil-baijal">LG Anil Baijal</keyword>, has got a go-ahead by the lieutenant governor. He has directed Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning and Engineering) Centre, the concerned authority, to approve the Rs 6,000crore project at the earliest. As per PWD minister <keyword id="2726632" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Satyender-Jain">Satyender Jain</keyword>, the north-south corridor will be partly constructed over the Najafgarh drain and would reduce travel time from two hours to 30 minutes. An elevated road for North Delhi residents to reach airport faster

In Delhi, the government is going to introduce a new policy for Ola and Uber, after which there would be a cap on fares that the customers are charged. 
 
The new policy is, as of now, under consideration by the Aam Aadmi Party government. 
 
"The draft is ready. Soon, it will be put up for public consultation," said Transport Minister Satyendar Jain. 
 
While asked to explain how the tariff and method of charging will be regulated, Jain said, "We have said meters should be there. Tariff will be what the government fixes, though it will be dynamic. They (aggregators) won't be able to impose surge pricing." 
 
The reason behind such policies is the huge amount of losses that black-and-yellow taxis and auto-rickshaws are suffering ever since <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Ubers-merging-with-Didi-Chuxing-in-China/articleshow/53490542.cms">Uber </a>and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Ola-has-done-something-which-will-make-it-way-ahead-of-Uber-Find-out/articleshow/53488024.cms">Ola </a>have started operations in the country.

"They play a game with you - sometimes charging you more and at other times less. We are fixing maximum (tariff) now and they won't be able to charge beyond that. (This maximum) tariff will depend upon the vehicle (which will be used)," Jain added. 
 
He said that the policy will be made keeping in mind the benefit of all stakeholders, while keeping up with the central government’s directions that allowed states to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Ola-and-Uber-maximum-fares/articleshow/52865453.cms">cap maximum fares </a>for these aggregators. 
 
As reported a few days back, the central government has <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/States-to-decide-Ola-and-Uber-meters-fate/articleshow/53499888.cms">authorised the state governments </a>to decide whether mobile app-based taxi aggregators would be charging fares based on digital meters or GPS in the capital.

Delhi to cap tariffs for Uber and Ola

The <keyword id="6360421" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-capital">national capital</keyword> has witnessed 2,364 <keyword id="6419711" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Deaths">deaths</keyword> due to coronavirus since October 28, when the daily rise in infections breached the mark of 5,000 cases for the first time, according to official data. Amid a surge in <keyword id="8785701" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="COVID-19-cases">COVID-19 cases</keyword> and deaths, 99 more fatalities on Wednesday pushed the city's total death toll due to the disease to 8,720. It was after five days that Delhi recorded single-day deaths below 100. The city reported 98 deaths on November 19, 118 on November 20, 111 on November 21, 121 each on November 22 and 23, and 109 fatalities on November 24, according to official data. While 131 COVID-related deaths were recorded on November 18, the highest till date, Delhi registered its highest single-day spike of 8,593 cases on November 11. On Thursday, Delhi had recorded 7,546 cases, followed by 6,608 on Friday, 5,879 on Saturday, 6,746 on Sunday, 4,454 on Monday, 6,224 on Tuesday and 5,246 on Wednesday, according to the government data. The total number of coronavirus cases in Delhi climbed to 5,45,787 on Wednesday, of which 4,98,780 have recovered from the virus, the data shows. Late hospital admissions leading to <keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19">COVID-19</keyword> cases turning critical, shortage of ICU beds, unfavourable weather and rising pollution are among the factors experts attribute to the spike in COVID-19 deaths in Delhi, health experts have said. Going by the epidemiological trend, the severity of the disease is more in this phase of the pandemic compared to the last one and several factors, including weather and pollution, are contributing to it, a health ministry official said on Wednesday. Amid a spurt in the infection tally in the city, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had Wednesday requested experts to audit COVID-19 death cases and suggest measures to reduce fatalities in the national capital. Health Minister Satyender Jain on Wednesday claimed the national capital reported the "least fatality per million" population amongst all four metro cities in the country. The National Centre for Disease Control in a report drafted recently had warned that Delhi needs to be prepared for about 15,000 fresh cases of COVID-19 per day taking into account the upcoming winter season-related respiratory problems, large influx of patients from outside and festive gatherings.

Experts believe that one of the reasons is the focus on ride-sharing. The ban could either be good for the companies if customers shift to solo rides. Or, bad if customers choose to shift to public transport altogether or find other alternative means of transportation. Other issues on the table In reviewing the regulations for cabs in the Indian national capital, the committee is also discussing the issue of green fuels and permits. Possible outcomes include enforcing that cabs only use fuels like CNG or LPG and providing proof of parking before applying for a permit. The biggest development to come is probably the tracking of cabs. Currently, cabs in the city aren’t monitored as they pick up and drop passengers. But the committee is considering adding GPS monitoring to the roster, not only for cabs in Delhi but for cabs that are registered in other states while operating within the city. For actual customers, the issues of greater relevance are the ‘panic’ button that will soon become a mandatory feature in cabs and putting a cap on the maximum fare that companies can charge from customers. If the scheme also goes through with its plan of limiting the number of cabs that can be put on call by a cab operator, the demand-supply disparity might even increase the overall prices in the market. The committee, that includes the transport minister Kailash Gahlot and Satyender Jain, a minister at the Public Works Department, is currently reviewing the City Taxi Scheme 2017, Licensing and Regulation of App-based Cab Aggregator Rules 2017 and app-based premium bus services. Sources have told Times of <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> that this the committee is unlikely to rule in the favour of companies being allowed to operate ride-sharing in Delhi.
