Different protesting <keyword id="500933" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Punjab-farmer">Punjab farmer</keyword> bodies on Tuesday decided to hold talks with the Centre over the <keyword id="10002582" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-farm-laws">new farm laws</keyword> in New Delhi on Wednesday. The decision to this effect was taken by representatives of several farmers' organisations at a meeting here. A seven-member panel has been formed to hold talks with the Centre, said Bharatiya Kisan Union (Rajewal) chief <keyword id="276944" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Balbir-Singh-Rajewal">Balbir Singh Rajewal</keyword> while addressing the media here. "We have decided that representatives of all farmers' bodies will attend the meeting," said Rajewal. The leaders included in the panel are Balbir Singh Rajewal, <keyword id="4361892" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="darshan-pal">Darshan Pal</keyword>, Jagjit singh Dalewal, <keyword id="33921" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="jagmohan-singh">Jagmohan Singh</keyword>, Kulwant Singh, Surjit Singh and Satnam Singh Sahni. Earlier on Monday, the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, a farmers' body in Punjab, decided not to attend the meeting called by the Union Agriculture Department on October 14. The farmers' organisations, whose agitation against the laws has disrupted rail traffic and severely impacted coal supply to thermal power plants in Punjab, had last week rejected the Centre's invitation to participate in a "conference to address their concerns" on October 8. Rajewal said as per the invitation sent by the secretary of the Union Agriculture Department, the Centre wants to hold talks with them. "We are going because if we continue to reject the invitation, then they will say we are not ready for any talks. We do not want to give them any excuse. We will go there," said Rajewal. Farmers in Punjab have been demanding that the three laws passed by Parliament recently be repealed. Farmers have expressed apprehension that the new laws will pave a way for the dismantling of the minimum support price system, leaving them at the "mercy" of big corporates. Farm laws: Punjab farmer bodies to talk to Centre

Sandhu said this during the varsity's annual convocation that was held on Friday at the campus premises. "Our government is working closely with their counterparts in Canada to resolve the issue which we are hopeful will happen soon," he said while talking to the media. Left in the lurch, 700-odd Indian students, mostly from Punjab, are facing <keyword id="106041" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="deportation" source="Orion">deportation</keyword> from Canada after the authorities in the country found their admission offer letters to be fake. Satnam Singh Sandhu said, "The university will provide every possible help to these students if they are deported. We will give them admission and enroll them in the same batches. Their credit score mapping will be carried out properly so that the credits earned by them in their previous institutions are not wasted. Bridge courses will also be offered to them if any gap is found during the credit score mapping. The university will make sure that they do not face any loss." Sandhu also said that if these students are deported, later the university will also assist them in pursuing their study abroad dreams in legitimate ways. "We understand the situation they are facing right now in the foreign country. We can feel their pain and stand with their families back in India," said Satnam Singh Sandhu, adding that the university is also exploring starting a helpline number for the affected students and their families. Meanwhile, more than 1400 students were awarded undergraduate and postgraduate, and Ph.D. degrees during the annual convocation held at CU on Friday. The convocation ceremony was attended by former president of India Ram Nath Kovind as chief guest. Chandigarh University is a NAAC A+ Grade University and an autonomous educational institution approved by UGC and is located near Chandigarh in the state of Punjab. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), 161 anti-Asian <keyword id="6463069" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hate-crimes" source="Orion">hate crimes</keyword> took place in 2019, which rose to 279 in 2020. Giving a religious break-up, the FBI said that 54 anti-Sikh crimes occurred in 2019, which rose to 89 in 2020. Anti-Asian hate crime increased by 339 per cent last year compared to the year before, with New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and other cities surpassing their record numbers in 2020, according to research by the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism. Late in August, four Indian American women were told that they were "ruining" America and should "go back to India" by a Mexican-American woman in Texas. In the same month, Krishnan Jayaraman was racially abused and called a "disgusting Hindu" by Californian Rajinder Singh in a Taco Bell outlet in Fremont. Community members have also expressed concerns over multiple brazen attacks on Mahatma Gandhi's statue in New York and other US cities. "Such bigoted attacks motivated by <keyword id="44060" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="racism" source="Orion">racism</keyword>, xenophobia, and other forms of hate victimise not only those directly targeted by them but also broader communities through creating an atmosphere of fear and danger," Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi had said recently. Last month, Indian-Americans held a peaceful protest at Time Square against the recent spurt in hate crimes and instances of vandalism of the Gandhi statue in the city. An Indian American Attitudes Survey released last year found that "one in two Indian-Americans reports being discriminated against in the past one year, with discrimination based on skin colour identified as the most common form of bias". Somewhat surprisingly, Indian-Americans born in the US are much more likely to report being victims of discrimination than their foreign-born counterparts," the survey, supported by Carnegie Endowment, said. Biden had spoken strongly against hate crimes at a recent event against racism. Half a dozen murders in a week send shockwaves across Indian community in US

Every protesting farmer at <keyword id="10719874" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="singhu-village">Singhu village</keyword> gives almost the same reply, "We won't go back till the three anti-farmer laws are taken back". Police barricades that were earlier put up at Singhu village, now have also appeared at Singhola village, which is around one-and-a-half km away from Singhu. Singhu and Singhola, these two Jat-dominated villages of northeast Delhi are located either side of the road - (Delhi-Panipat highway) which is blocked since November 26 due to the farmers' protests. Scores of farmers from Haryana and <keyword id="6354953" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="punjab">Punjab</keyword> have been protesting at Singhu against three the <keyword id="9970645" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="farm-laws">farm laws</keyword> passed by Parliament. These three laws are - The Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020, The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020 and The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill, 2020. In the last one week, IANS spoke to a varied section of people and farmers at the Singhu protest site to get their views about three farm laws they have stood against and about their lives within multi-layer security for the last two months. Though most of them were not well aware of the contentious points of these three farm laws, they have their own stories of struggling as farmers. A group of farmers from various districts of Haryana sitting with their traditional hookahs in the middle raised their concerns that the new farm rules will end the mandi system and leave them dependent on corporate agents. Mahar Singh Talwandi, an old farmer in the group said, "We are worried that the government will end the mandi system and will give free hands to big companies. The Mandi system helps us to take money in advance and the people associated with the system are also familiar with farmers' issues." As to how the movement against three farm laws started in Haryana, Devender Singh, another old famer in the group said, "Government's laws are written in English and we old farmers do not know. But, we know farming and its rules. After the Government passed these farm laws, farmers in Haryana started meetings in villages and opposed farm laws. People those who are dependent on farming have reservations against these farms laws." While a middle-aged farmer who has come from Jind district in Haryana, sitting in the group added, "At present, the farmers in Haryana have no work to do on farmland for next two months. We are free and will stay here only." Young farmers at Singhu would often reply to any query slamming the BJP-run government, especially incidents on January 26 at Red Fort and scuffle due to stone-pelting at a protest site on January 28. They expressed their anger slamming the government for suspending internet services there, putting up barricades, blocking the place they are protesting, arrests of farmers, and many more issues. "BJP-led government first tried to divide farmers and then made several attempts to derail peaceful farm protests through its partymen. Many of us are students and we are here because of wrong policy (farm laws) by the government. We will not allow corporate companies to snatch our lands. We will fight until these anti-farm laws are repealed," said Sukhvir Singh, one of the farmers in the group. Satnam Singh, a farmer leader in the group added, "We will not talk with the government till all the farmers are out of jail. No matter how long the government will test farmers, we will sit here and will leave this place only after these three farm laws are taken back." Security beefed up at Singhu border, farmers firm on demands

New Delhi, Jan 27 () As cracks began to appear in their ongoing agitation against the agri laws after the violence during the tractor parade, farmer unions on Wednesday cancelled their planned march to Parliament on February 1 when the Budget would be presented. They said their agitation against the farm laws will continue and public meetings and hunger strikes will be held across the country on January 30 on Mahatma Gandhi's death anniversary to emphasise on peace and non-violence. The decision by farmer unions came a day after massive violence during their tractor rally in the national capital that left nearly 400 police personnel injured, as the protesters deviated from the routes, clashed with the cops and laid seige to the Red Fort. The farmer leaders, however, alleged that there was a conspiracy behind Tuesday's incidents and demanded a probe. "The tractor parade was hit by a government conspiracy. Deep Sidhu is an RSS man. Police let him go after he hoisted a religious flag at Red Fort," farmer leader Darshan Pal, who has been accused by the police of making inflammatory speeches, alleged at a press conference. Sidhu is a former aide of actor and BJP MP Sunny Deol. Deol had distanced himself from Sidhu in December after he supported the farmers' agitation. "We have cancelled our plan for a march to Parliament on budget day on February 1. But our agitation will continue and there will be public meetings and hunger strike across the country on January 30, " Pal said. Another farmer leader Balbir Singh Rajewal claimed that over two lakh tractors and lakhs of people participated in Tuesday's parade and "99.9 percent of the protesters were peaceful". Even as the farmer unions continued to allege that "anti-social" elements had perpetrated the violence to "torpedo" their peaceful agitation against the farm laws, Tuesday's incidents that have been widely condemned started taking a toll with Bharatiya Kisan Union (Bhanu) and All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee withdrawing from the protests on the Delhi's borders. Swaraj India leader Yogendra Yadav, who has been supporting the farmers' agitation, said, "We regret the Red Fort incident and accept its moral responsibility. The incident should be probed. There is a conspiracy behind it." Responding to a question on farmer leaders being named in FIR, Yadav said, "FIR, jail and torture are rewards of movements". "We have video clippings and we will expose how a conspiracy was hatched to defame our movement," Shivkumar Kakka said. As many as 37 farmer leaders, including Rakesh Tikait, Yogendra Yadav, Darshan Pal, Medha Patkar and Gurnam Singh Chaduni, have been named in an FIR in connection with the violence during the tractor parade. Wielding sticks and clubs and holding the tricolour and union flags, tens of thousands of farmers atop tractors broke barriers, clashed with police and entered the city from various points to lay siege to the Red Fort on the Republic Day. Farmers, mostly from Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh, have been camping at several Delhi border points, including Tikri, Singhu and Ghazipur, since November 28, demanding a complete repeal of three farm laws and a legal guarantee on minimum support price for their crops. "The conspiracy to defame a peaceful movement of last seven months is now exposed in front of the public. Along with some individuals and organizations, like Deep Sidhu and Kisan Majdoor Sangarsh Committee led by S Satnam Singh Pannu, the government made this movement violent. "We clarify again that we dissociate ourselves from the violent actions which took place at Red Fort and other parts of Delhi," Pal said at the press conference. He alleged that the incident of "orchestrated". "The parade of the farmers was predominantly peaceful and on the agreed-upon route. We strongly condemn the insult to national symbols, but the farmers' movement cannot be painted as 'violent' as violence was done by a few anti-social elements, who are not associated with us. The representatives of the committee said they were getting support from several sections including government employees and labourers. Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee president Satnam Singh Pannu said that they have appealed to representatives of political parties, ministers, MPs and MLAs not to take part in the farmers' agitation. They vowed to gherao BJP leaders and socially boycott those who voted in favour of the farm bills. As many as 31 farmers' outfits have given a call for the complete shutdown of Punjab on September 25 to protest against the bills. Farmers hold 'Rail roko' agitation in Punjab, train services suspended

New Delhi, Apr 15 () As the government extends the lockdown, non-governmental organisation Smile Foundation on Wednesday said it plans to reach out to 40,000 families in the next one month across 14 states for providing psychological counselling through tele-calling. A pilot phase of tele-counselling, which started a week ago in Howrah, Kolkata, scanned about 250 patients a day and the programme is now going national, it said. "With the lockdown being extended, our beneficiaries need us more than ever to be there for them. Through this directly connecting with beneficiaries, we aim to create a sense of security and also help in addressing their fears," Smile Foundation co-founder and executive trustee Santanu Mishra said in a statement. Suicidal tendencies, fears and anxieties have gripped the poor and migrant labour populations who have been the worst affected by the sudden decision of lockdown by the government to contain the spread of coronavirus, he said. Smile Foundation, which works on primary healthcare, has drawn out a plan to reach out to these marginalised populations and help them fight their fears and anxiety in this period of lockdown through mental health counselling. In the coming days, the state governments will be scaling up screening operations in coronavirus-hit states namely Maharashtra, Delhi-NCR, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Jharkhand, Orissa, Chhattisgarh, and Uttar Pradesh. "Over the next couple of weeks, trained counsellors, doctors, nurses from Smile Foundation will be making several thousand calls to all beneficiaries within our network and partner organisations to ease out their angst caused by the spread of the deadly coronavirus," Smile Foundation Health Lead Satnam Singh said. Last week, the Foundation started its first phase of ration distribution reaching out to 40,000 families across 10 states. Over the coming weeks, the foundation aims to reach out to another 1,10,000 families across 19 states and help them meet their daily nutrition needs, as well as sanitation needs like masks, soaps, sanitary napkins and sanitisers, the statement added. "My wife was also planning to come to India on March 16 as we had plans to go back together. Neither could she come, nor was I able to go back to London. I even approached the British High Commission in India and the Indian High Commission in UK for a ticket in the chartered flights arranged by the UK government but all the tickets were sold out within 15-minutes! I am eagerly waiting for some solution", he said.US-based Avtar Singh Dhillon, who came on a 28- day leave to attend a wedding in Punjab in February, is among those stuck."My family is stuck in Tracey city in California while I am staying with my parents. Thankfully, I didn't come on a return ticket as my father was unwell but I had plans to go back by April end but now I am stuck here. Even my family is living under lockdown in the US due to COVID-19 cases", he added.US-based Sukhvir Singh said that his mother had travelled to San Francisco to attend his wedding and was planning to go back to India in April but was stuck now. "My brother back home in Jalandhar is eagerly awaiting my mother's return", he said through email.NRI from Greece Ram Lubhaya, who is in Jalandhar to meet his family, said, "I came to India on January 28 and my return flight was on March 21 but by that time the Indian government imposed a ban on international flights". "The Greece government has announced some measures to assist its work force and I could not even avail that," he said. Another Jalandhar-based family, Rakesh Mahi, the father of Punjabi singer Ginni Mahi has been stuck in Rome since March 4. Mahi said that he was accompanying his daughter on a musical tour in Europe, when the situation turned bad. "We would have landed in India by April 13 but all plans were changed due to COVID-19 pandemic...We are eagerly waiting for the situation to improve", he shared through email.However, some NRIs were lucky enough to reach their destination well on time. Simran Kaur, who came from Canada to meet her parents in Hoshiarpur district in February, returned to Vancouver on March 15, the time when the Canadian government announced a ban on international travel. "I am glad, I reached well on time and was able to resume my work too", she quipped. Countries across the world including India have imposed travel restrictions to contain the spread of coronavirus.
