Online retail major <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword>, headquartered in Seattle, has crossed $2 billion in its investments in India, after it infused another Rs 1,680 crore in its main local unit <keyword id="2654766" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Amazon-Seller-Services">Amazon Seller Services</keyword> last month. After this round, its total capital invested in India stands at over Rs13,800 crore ($2.1billion). This makes Amazon the second largest global investor in India's digital economy, next only to <keyword id="163404" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Softbank">SoftBank</keyword> Group. The Japanese group has so far invested about $4 billion in its India operations. "There are few areas <keyword id="6354743" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Amazon-India">Amazon India</keyword> is targeting now - they want to grow big in fashion. The focus is also on growing Prime membership for next six months and keeping the user engaged. Part of the infusion will be directed to Prime content development," <keyword id="1671153" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Satish-Meena">Satish Meena</keyword>, senior forecast analyst at <keyword id="151787" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Forrester-Research">Forrester Research</keyword>, told <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/amazon-crosses-2-billion-mark-in-india-investments/articleshow/59463903.cms">ET</a>. Some part of this money could also be used to strengthen the network before the upcoming festive season, which sees the biggest sales in India’s e-commerce space. "They are gearing up for Diwali and the usual investment in logistics and warehousing will continue. This year, the competition is only from <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>," said Meena. Amazon would continue to infuse capital into India in a six to nine month interval for the next two to three years, so that it can be ahead of the rivals. Amazon’s biggest rival in India, the Flipkart group, has recently raised a round of $1.4 billion funding, led by Chinese internet conglomerate <keyword id="212412" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tencent">Tencent</keyword> and US technology corporations eBay and <keyword id="10387" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword>. This round took Flipkart’s total capital raised till date to a whopping $4.6 billion.

Amazon has invested more than $2-billion in India so far

<keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> is having a tough time dealing with the home-grown Indian e-commerce companies. The proof is <keyword id="639385" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon-Inc">Amazon Inc</keyword> has reported losses in its international business for the quarter ended in September. The reason for this, as per the analysts is extensive investments in India to take a lead in the market. 
 
The Seattle-based e-commerce giant has lost $541 million in the third quarter, as against $208-million loss during the same period last year. However the company will continue to make the same kind of expenditure in the current fiscal as well. Having launched its annual subscription service ‘Prime’, Amazon has also signed collaborations with movie production houses like Karan Johar's Dharma Productions, <keyword id="15354" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="mukesh-bhatt">Mukesh Bhatt</keyword>'s <keyword id="359695" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vishesh-Films">Vishesh Films</keyword> and <keyword id="736069" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chhota-Bheem">Chhota Bheem</keyword> maker <keyword id="1093857" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Green-Gold-Animation">Green Gold Animation</keyword> for the launch of its video service. 
 Amazon's Chief Financial Officer <keyword id="2501764" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Brian-Olsavsky">Brian Olsavsky</keyword> told the <keyword id="6474066" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="economic-times">Economic Times</keyword>, "By far the biggest individual thing is investment in India., He indicated the investments (in India) will continue as the company is "very excited about the initial reaction from both customers and the sellers. That is essentially the international margin guidance in Q4.” 
 
 "We are very encouraged by what we see in India but it is still very early on. Our most recent highlights will be the launch of the Prime programme in the past quarter, and it is now one of the top-selling units on Amazon India,” <keyword id="3790980" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="olsavsky">Olsavsky</keyword> told the ET. An Amazon India spokeswoman said, "(We) are committed to invest aggressively over the long term to transform how India buys and sells.” 
 This is the biggest operating loss that Amazon's international business has reported in its history, according to company filings reviewed by the ET. India is the next big retail opportunity for Amazon, after having failed to make much headway in the Chinese ecommerce market dominated by local powerhouse <keyword id="302749" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alibaba">Alibaba</keyword>. 
 The report, dated September 13, also said that Amazon is losing $1 billion in India annually right now. In June, Amazon founder and CEO <keyword id="191583" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jeff-Bezos">Jeff Bezos</keyword> announced scaling up investment in the country to $5 billion, which is more than the combined capital raised by local rivals <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> and <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword>, which slipped to third position earlier this year. 
 "Winning the India market will be expensive, and Amazon knows this. From the last six months their burn rate has increased, which is now showing in the results,” <keyword id="1671153" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Satish-Meena">Satish Meena</keyword>, forecast analyst at <keyword id="151787" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Forrester-Research">Forrester Research</keyword> told the ET.

A two-hour delivery service of daily essentials called <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Amazon+Now&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Amazon Now</a> has been started by <keyword id="6354743" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon-India">Amazon India</keyword> in Mumbai, following <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Bengaluru&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Bengaluru</a> and parts of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=New+Delhi&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">New Delhi</a>. 
 The consumable are sold on the company’s website <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword>.in and <keyword id="3231599" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon-Now">Amazon Now</keyword>, an on-demand delivery platform available as an <keyword id="6355645" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="android">Android</keyword> app. Unlike Amazon.in, the online marketplace which targets monthly bulk purchases, Amazon Now provides daily or weekly top-ups of groceries, taking on online startups including <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Bigbasket&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Bigbasket</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Grofers&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Grofers</a> as well as traditional retailers such as <keyword id="44949" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Future-group">Future Group</keyword>. 
 
“Daily consumables are shaping up to be one of our largest categories... Fashion, consumables and consumer electronics are neck-and-neck in terms of volumes," country manager <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Amit+Agarwal&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Amit Agarwal</a> told ET. 
 
Though, the average sale price od a product is low, it has been anticipated by the analysts, that the category will be useful as it will help Amazon India boost repeat purchase and loyalty among regular online shoppers, whom the company is targeting through its Prime subscription service launched in July. 
 
"Amazon will look to acquire the top 50-60 million of existing online customers who are spending very frequently online through services like Prime, which will be the first leg of their strategy," <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Satish+Meena&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Satish Meena</a>, an analyst at <keyword id="151787" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Forrester-Research">Forrester Research</keyword> told ET. 
 
In volumetric terms, the company’s fast moving consumer goods business has grown by about 200% year-on-year, by the end of August. "Amazon.in has witnessed strong growth in the category from tier-II and tier-III cities, with nearly 50% of the orders coming from outside the top eight cities," a spokeswoman for Amazon India told ET. 
 
Pantry' product were introduced in Hyderabad this week by Amazon. The customers can select grocery and household essentials to be packed into boxes of up to 15 kg for home delivery the next day, with a shipping charge of Rs 20. Though, it is currently free for Amazon Prime subscribers. 
 "We see a very high degree of repeat usage and very big basket sizes that customers are shopping for," <keyword id="781" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Agarwal">Agarwal</keyword> added.

New Delhi, As the e-commerce battle intensifies in India, with <keyword id="58448" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Retail">Reliance Retail</keyword>'s JioMart being the latest major entrant with a massive potential to disrupt the space, the next big thing is the <keyword id="6355447" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="delivery">delivery</keyword> of <keyword id="389479" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="groceries">groceries</keyword> online and the market size is estimated to grow eight times in the next five years in the country. As companies from Reliance to BigBasket put their top dollar in serving daily grocery at your doorsteps, <keyword id="1640900" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Online-grocery">online grocery</keyword> is going to be the next battleground for growth, expanding to over $18 billion by 2024. The eGrocery market has grown 60% from the calendar year 2020 and is expected to grow 41-49 per cent by the first half of CY21, according to the latest data provided by homegrown consulting firm RedSeer. Another recent report by Bengaluru-based RedSeer and Bigbasket (Brand Intelligence) found that demand for comfort foods like noodles and cookies, immunity boosters such as lemon, and hygiene products like sanitisers picked up after the pandemic while essentials remained strong. Within snacks and branded foods, biscuits and cookies were the largest sub-category and grew the most. "We have observed that traditional brands which pivoted quickly to be digitally ready brands have seen 2x+ jump in sales compared to offline brands," said Anil Kumar, founder and CEO of RedSeer. Now, JioMart is set to take the pole position in online delivery of groceries. "Grocery is the largest retail category. This makes it an important category for retailers and one that is going to drive future growth of online retail sales. JioMart will definitely be a key player in the months to come," said Satish Meena, Senior Forecast Analyst with global market research firm Forrester. Driven by the uptick in online grocery adoption due to the Covid-19 pandemic, "online retail sales will grow at a CAGR of 30 per cent from 2019 to 2024 and reach $359 billion", Meena informed. India is witnessing a surge in demand for online grocery. The latest Reliance takeover of <keyword id="44949" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Future-group">Future Group</keyword>'s retail business is a major consolidation of organised grocery retail. In terms of grocery retail, the revenue of Reliance Retail in FY20 was Rs 346 billion and that of Future Retail's annualised revenue for FY20 was Rs 100 billion. According to Meena, grocery will also be the category where most marketplaces' investments will be made in the next five years. Reliance Jio's new commerce platform JioMart and Whatsapp will be working closely to create growth opportunities for millions of Indian small merchants and kirana shops, <keyword id="6355199" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="reliance-industries">Reliance Industries</keyword> (RIL) Chairman Mukesh Ambani said recently. In India, there are more than 15 million monthly WhatsApp Business app users, and more than 400 million overall users. Reliance aims to integrate JioMart in WhatsApp within the next six months. The Covid-19 induced lockdowns and social distancing led to a surge in online orders for groceries, driven by utility as 80% of those who ordered online during lockdown did it for convenience as opposed to price and selection. According to a survey by LocalCircles, 52% online grocery shoppers found the e-commerce grocery apps useful during lockdown. As many as 32% online grocery shoppers placed one or more orders every week during the lockdown while 38% found fruits and vegetables delivered via e-commerce grocery apps to be of poor quality. A recent Bernstein report said that Reliance is "best positioned in new commerce, digitising neighbourhood stores, and e-commerce apps (JioMart and AJIO)". Online Grocery market estimated to grow eight times in 5 years in India, JioMart big gainer

The petitioner in the court contended that the Assembly elections were held in Rajasthan on December 7, 2018 in which the six MLAs were elected on tickets issued by the BSP. The six MLAs -- Sandeep Yadav, Wajib Ali, Deepchand Kheria, Lakhan Meena, Jogendra Awana and Rajendra Gudha -- later defected to the Congress in September 2019. After the truce with Sachin Pilot, the Congress government is safe in numbers as the party has more than the required majority. At <keyword id="9428604" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-congress-legislative-party">the Congress Legislative Party</keyword> (CLP) meeting, the two camps shook hands in the presence of the party observers. The two leaders Ashok Gehlot and Sachin Pilot met before the CLP meeting in Gehlot's house. At the meeting, Gehlot gave a call to forget the past, saying, "'Apne tau apne hote hain'. We could have proved majority on the floor of the House even without these 19 MLAs, but then there would have been no happiness around." Gehlot further said, "We will move the confidence motion ourselves. We shall also resolve the grievances of our MLAs who are annoyed with us." The BJP on Thursday announced that it will move a no-confidence motion against the Gehlot government when the special Assembly session commences. Now, some see Jio as the next Alibaba, and some see it as India’s Tencent. Or is it both rolled into one? “Similar to Alibaba or Tencent which created tech-based ecosystems in China, we find RIL best positioned to create a similar ecosystem in India. We note that Tencent has taken a similar approach in China for WeChat, with stakes in platforms such as Meituan, JD, PDD, etc. We see such a move by RIL to be positive for the Indian internet ecosystem,” said a Goldman Sachs report dated July 16. Jio has already invested in over 20 startups since June 2017 and, as Ambani hinted at the shareholders’ meeting, there may be more in the coming weeks and months. “I believe that there is no better partner for Indian start-ups than JIO. ecosystem control — right from content to music to movies as well as having all the different apps within that ecosystem. Meanwhile, Arvind Singhal, managing director of Technopak, thinks it's foolish to compare Ambani’s plans to those of Tencent or Alibaba. “Many many years ago, people used to say Reliance will be the Walmart of India or the Amazon of India… no Reliance is Reliance, it deserves that credit. Their thinking is very far ahead in all sectors. In this case, Jio along with Retail is one complex piece of a puzzle,” he said. Tencent is a big player in gaming but Jio is still planning to get started with Akash Ambani’s announcement of Jio Console in the 2019 AGM of the company. While making big investments in technology, Ambani is also going big on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/mukesh-ambani-next-goal-seems-to-be-the-retail-king-of-india/articleshow/76953716.cms">physical retail</a>, where Tencent is not a player, though Alibaba is. Refining and petrochemicals continues to contribute over 60% to the consolidated revenue of RIL⁠. Yet, Ambani has already disclosed his plan to spin out Jio and list it as a separate company. And when that happens, the sheer expanse of the company’s interest areas and their individual potential may be benchmarked to the value of similar businesses under the Alibaba and Tencent banners. India may be a smaller market compared to China, where Alibaba and Tencent are major players, but that also leaves a huge growth potential on the table for Jio. Step aside Cyber Monday, forget Black Friday and watch out Singles’ Day. India is home to a shopping festival that hopes one day to eclipse them all, even if it hasn’t settled on a name for it yet. Much like Thanksgiving in America and November 11 in China, Diwali – India’s festival of lights – has come to assume a whole new meaning for the country’s bargain-hunting shoppers. In the run-up to Diwali, online retailers slash prices on everything from newly launched smartphones to home appliances and the latest fashions in the hope of cashing in on a tradition that sees Indians celebrate with a splurge of new purchases. This year’s festivities promise to be the biggest spending yet, as Amazon and Walmart-owned Flipkart launch rival sales in a head-to-head battle for market dominance. But while the companies may brand their sales differently – Amazon’s is the ”Great Indian Festival”; Flipkart’s is “Big Billion Days” – consumers could be forgiven if they struggle to tell them apart. After all, the events will run at the same time, from September 29 to October 4, and under a new law no item can be sold exclusively by either platform. Photo: Reuters “I usually plan to buy any electronic or electrical items during this period only,” says Surya Chandra, a software engineer based in Bangalore who has been eagerly anticipating this year’s sales. “I wait until the sale is announced. This time, I’m planning to purchase a mobile phone for my mother.” Chandra is far from alone. Such is the demand that Amazon and Flipkart have hired an additional 140,000 temporary staff to ensure things go smoothly. Forrester Research estimates US$4.8 billion will be spent during the month from September 27 to October 29, 80 per cent of which will be during the sales period. Amazon and Flipkart have not released their estimates regarding spending habits in the sales period. Satish Meena, a senior forecast analyst with Forrester Research, says the goal of e-commerce firms is to change consumption habits rather than simply boost sales. “This time, they are trying to nudge customers to spend more online than offline, rather than trying to increase their overall purchases. So, if someone has a total budget of 10,000 rupees [US$140], the consumer is now being nudged to spend more than 5,000 of those rupees online.” Discounts ranging from 10 per cent to 80 per cent along with cashback offers and options to pay in instalments are among the chief lures. Photo: AFP “I have more options when buying online, and more time to compare and contrast all different options without being rushed by a salesperson as I would be in a physical store,” says Maya Walker, a researcher who has made several purchases over the sales period. Online purchases have other advantages over bricks-and-mortar shops, too. “I find it easier to maintain warranty details for products bought online. It’s easy to lose physical bills or warranty cards, especially when you relocate,” Walker says. PURCHASING POWER Purchasers like Walker are expected to catapult the value of the Indian e-commerce industry to US$200 billion by 2026, up from US$38.5 billion in 2017, according to the government-funded agency India Brand Equity Foundation. While not all agencies agree on this figure, none of them see anything other than enormous growth in the sector’s future. Though the Indian figures pale in comparison with China, where retail e-commerce sales are predicted to touch US$1.19 trillion this year, and the US, where consumers spent US$517.36 billion online in 2018, India’s growth trajectory is remarkable. <h3 style="margin-bottom: 1.42857rem; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: 300; font-stretch: inherit; font-size: 1.71429rem; line-height: 2.35714rem; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; vertical-align: baseline; display: inherit;"><a href="https://www.scmp.com/week-asia/business/article/2110992/e-commerce-bike-shares-how-chinese-firms-went-copycat-copy" class="link-text">E-commerce to bike shares: How Chinese firms went from copycat to copy that </a></h3>By most estimates, the world’s second-most populous country is home to its fastest growing e-commerce sector, with experts attributing the growth to rapid internet penetration, robust investment, improving digital payment infrastructure and digital-first initiatives by the administration of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The success is also partly attributable to the country’s burgeoning middle class. A recent survey by the brokerage firm Jefferies found that Indian online shoppers currently spend about 12,000 rupees (US$170) per year per shopper, and it forecast this figure to nearly double by 2030 as the number of items that can be bought online grows. Piquing shoppers’ interest are electronic items and accessories, which account for close to 40 per cent of all online sales, and lifestyle and apparel, which make up 25 per cent. Accounting firm Deloitte predicts the industry’s value will grow to US$1.2 trillion by 2021, up from US$795 billion in 2017. During the same period, the number of online shoppers is predicted to quadruple from the current number of 100 million and the number of smartphone users is expected to cross the 800 million mark, suggesting competition is only set to intensify. Manish Tiwary, Amazon India’s vice-president for category management, says reaching customers in the “farthest parts of the country” is central to its plans: “We are extremely buoyant for the upcoming Great Indian Festival. Amazon’s Great Indian Festival is a significant event for us, and it is a key element for us to bring the next 100 million customers online,” he says. “India remains a key growth region for Amazon and we are investing in all the things that are good for our customers as well as sellers. We are increasing the pace of our local innovations to overcome language barriers, digital payment complexities and infrastructure challenges and at the same time partnering with the ecosystem to transform lives.” THREE-WAY RACE Until 2013, India’s e-commerce sector had been dominated by Flipkart – the country’s long-cherished unicorn launched in 2007 by entrepreneurs Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal (the two are not related). Amazon’s arrival heralded a years-long price war in which the two faced off with aggressive campaigns, ludicrous discounts and attempts at innovation. Last year, the competition heated up when Walmart acquired Flipkart in a deal that valued the Bangalore-headquartered start-up at US$21 billion. The buyout, the world’s biggest e-commerce deal at the time, marked the end of the era of the Bansals, who have long been idolised by India’s aspiring entrepreneurs. The deal also made India the battleground for a collision between two American behemoths. Now the market is braced for the entry of a third player in the form of the e-commerce wing of Reliance, owned by one of Asia’s richest men, Mukesh Ambani. Reliance has been making waves in various sectors in recent years with radical strategies that have shaken up both the telecoms and internet services markets. Analysts say news of Reliance’s challenge, which reports say is in the testing phase at the moment, has already prompted Amazon and Flipkart to up their games. “That’s why they are adding two more layers beyond price this year,” says Meena of Forrester Research. “They are not only playing on pricing but also on special offers and the overall customer experience, hoping to make it difficult for shoppers to switch to the new entrant.” It remains to be seen whether Reliance will hold its own sales period to coincide with Diwali. And when it does, however it’s branded, to most shoppers getting ready to celebrate the festival of lights it will mean just one thing – even more bargains.
