India successfully tested an anti-submarine weapon system developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (<keyword id="6355142" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="DRDO">DRDO</keyword>) on Monday, in a boost to its naval warfare capabilities. <keyword id="7706628" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="defence-minister-rajnath-singh">Defence Minister Rajnath Singh</keyword> congratulated the DRDO scientists for the feat. He said, "The DRDO has successfully flight tested the Supersonic Missile assisted release of Torpedo, SMART. This will be a major technology breakthrough for stand-off capability in anti-submarine warfare. I congratulate DRDO and other stakeholders for this significant achievement." DRDO chairman G. Satheesh Reddy said that SMART is a game changer technology demonstration in Anti-Submarine Warfare. The DRDO said that "supersonic missile-assisted release of torpedo (SMART) has been successfully flight tested at 11:45 hrs from Wheeler Island off the coast of Odisha. "All the mission objectives including missile flight up to the range and altitude, separation of the nose cone, release of Torpedo and deployment of Velocity Reduction Mechanism (VRM) have been met perfectly," DRDO said in a statement. It also stated that the tracking stations -- Radars, Electro Optical Systems -- along the coast and the telemetry stations including down range ships monitored all the events. It is a missile-assisted release of lightweight anti-submarine torpedo system for anti-submarine warfare operations far beyond torpedo range. This launch and demonstration is significant in establishing anti-submarine warfare capabilities. India successfully tests anti-submarine weapon system

The Defence Research Development Organisation has developed a prototype ventilator that can be used for multiple patients, its chief <keyword id="3051242" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Satheesh-Reddy">Satheesh Reddy</keyword> said on Monday, amid a spike in the number of <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> cases in the country. He added the model is being improved to include changes suggested by medical researchers and doctors and the new version should be ready by next week. "We are attempting to take the output of one ventilator. The mechanism makes it usable for multiple patients. We have developed the first model. We have seen it is working. There are some medical researchers, doctors who have advised us to incorporate features. We are working on it," he said. Reddy said this is a "last-minute resort" if the number of coronavirus patients increases and there is shortage of ventilators. "By next week it should be ready with the suggestions made by the doctors and medical researchers," he said. The DRDO has prepared ventilator designs in the past and passed it on to the industry. Separately, the <keyword id="210071" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Health">Ministry of Health</keyword> said the DRDO will begin manufacturing 20,000 N-95 masks per day from next week. The ministry has also asked the Bharat Electronics Ltd, a public-sector undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, to manufacture 30,000 ventilators in next two months. Among private players, Agva Healthcare, Noida, has been given an order to manufacture 10,000 ventilators within a month. DRDO is stepping in to build ventilators and manufacture masks

The <keyword id="152819" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="defence-research-and-development-organisation" source="Orion">Defence Research and Development Organisation</keyword> (<keyword id="6355142" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="drdo" source="Orion">DRDO</keyword>) conducted two successful flight tests of the <keyword id="6354416" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="indian-army" source="Orion">Indian Army</keyword>'s version of the Medium Range Surface to <keyword id="635273" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="air-missile" source="Orion">Air Missile</keyword> (MRSAM) on Sunday. The tests, conducted at the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha, were carried out as part of the live firing trials against high-speed aerial targets. The first test was to intercept a medium-altitude, long-range target and the second against a low-altitude, short-range target. The missiles intercepted the targets and destroyed them completely, registering direct hits at both ranges. Developed jointly by DRDO and the <keyword id="621699" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="israel-aerospace-industries" source="Orion">Israel Aerospace Industries</keyword> (IAI), for use by the Indian Army, the MRSAM Army weapon system comprises multi-function radar, mobile launcher system, and other vehicles. The flight tests were carried out with the weapon system in deliverable configuration. The performance of the weapon system was validated through the flight data captured by range instruments like radars, electro-optical tracking systems and telemetry deployed by ITR, Chandipur. Senior officials from the DRDO and the Indian Army were present at the test site. DRDO successfully flight-tests Army's surface to air missile

India on Thursday successfully carried out test fire of <keyword id="42900" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="brahmos" source="Orion">Brahmos</keyword> missile with enhanced capabilities. The <keyword id="152819" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="defence-research-and-development-organisation" source="Orion">Defence Research and Development Organisation</keyword> (DRDO) in a statement said that Brahmos supersonic cruise missile with increased indigenous content and improved performance was successfully test fired at 10.30 a.m. from <keyword id="58540" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="integrated-test-range" source="Orion">Integrated Test Range</keyword>, Chandipur off the coast of Odisha. The launch was conducted by <keyword id="129898" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="brahmos-aerospace" source="Orion">Brahmos Aerospace</keyword> in close coordination with DRDO teams. In this text book flight, the missile followed the predicted trajectory, meeting all mission objectives. The flight test is a major milestone in the way forward for Brahmos programme. The highly manouverable missile cruised at supersonic speed for its maximum range and all mission objectives were met. The missile was equipped with the advanced indigenous technologies and followed a modified optimal trajectory for enhanced efficiency and improved performance. The missile with the modified control system has been fine tuned to achieve an enhanced capability. This flight test was monitored by all the sensors of the range instrumentation including telemetry, radar and electro-optical tracking systems deployed across the eastern coast and the down range ships. Teams from DRDO and NPOM Russia participated in the test. Brahmos Aerospace the Joint Venture between India's DRDO and Russia's NPOM has been continuously upgrading the powerful, highly versatile BrahMos to increase its effectiveness and lethality against sea and land targets. India successfully test fires new version of Brahmos missile

India, Israel sign agreement for development of dual use technologies in defence

New Delhi, Apr 30 () Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held a meeting with the top military brass of the country on Thursday to take stock of the overall preparedness of the armed forces in dealing with the coronavirus pandemic, officials said.Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat, Indian Navy Chief Admiral Karambir Singh, Indian Air Force's Air Chief Marshal R K S Bhadauria and Indian Army Chief General M M Naravane were present at the meeting, they said. Hyderabad, July 6 () The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is going to establish a research cell at Indian Institute of Technology here to meet the future defence technological requirements of the country. The DRDO - IITH Research Cell will undertake basic and applied research programmes in identified technology areas, a press release from the institute said on Monday. An MoU was signed during a virtual event organized at the DRDO DG-MSS Office in Hyderabad on July 3 in which officials from DRDO and IIT Hyderabad participated. Being established as an extension of the DRDO Research and Innovation Centre (RIC), Chennai, the research cell is envisaged to become a Centre of Excellence in conducting scientific and applied research in advanced technologies for defence, it said. Highlighting the role expected of DRDO-IITH Research Cell, G.Satheesh Reddy, Secretary, Department of Defence R&amp;D and Chairman, DRDO, who addressed the event through video conference, said,the MoU is aimed at bringing together the capabilities of DRDO and IIT Hyderabad, in order to achieve greater heights in indigenous technology through collaborative research. "This DRDO-IITH Research Cell will ensure seamless execution of different projects between DRDO and IITH. IITH has a strong research base in advanced technologies, which will be strengthened for the growth of the country through this cell," Reddy said. DRDO to set up research cell at IIT Hyderabad

India successfully carried out the final trial of <keyword id="1636608" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="anti-tank-guided-missile">anti-tank guided missile</keyword> -- Nag -- on Thursday. The missile will be inducted soon in the India Army. In 2008, Ministry of Defence approved procurement of 300 Nag missiles and 25 missile carriers for Army. The test was carried out at 6.45 a.m. at the Pokhran field firing ranges in Rajasthan, Defence Research and Development Organisation (<keyword id="6355142" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="DRDO">DRDO</keyword>) said. The missile was integrated with the actual warhead and a tank target was kept at designated range. This was launched from <keyword id="794819" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nag-missile">Nag Missile</keyword> Carrier NAMICA. The missile hit the target accurately defeating the armour. Anti-tank guided missile has been developed by DRDO to engage highly fortified enemy tanks in day and night conditions. The missile has "Fire &amp; Forget" "Top Attack" capabilities with passive homing guidance to defeat all main battle tanks equipped with composite and reactive armour. The NAG missile carrier NAMICA is an Infantry Combat Vehicle BMP2 II based system with amphibious capability. With this final user trial, NAG will enter into production phase. The missile will be produced by Defence PSU Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), whereas Ordinance Factory Medak will produce the NAMICA. India's anti-tank guided missile NAG completes final test — will soon be inducted into the Indian Army

New Delhi, Apr 23 () Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday unveiled via video link a Mobile Virology Research and Diagnostics Laboratory (MVRDL) developed by DRDO that will help in speeding up COVID-19 screening, a statement said.The first such Mobile Viral Research Lab (MVRL) that will speed up coronavirus screening and related R&amp;D activities was developed by the Research Centre Imarat (RCI), the Hyderabad-based laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), in consultation with ESIC Hospital, Hyderabad, the statement said.The Mobile Viral Research Lab is the combination of a Biosafety Level 3 lab and a BSL 2 lab essential to carry out its activities. The lab is built as per World Health Organisation (WHO) and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) biosafety standards to meet international guidelines. The system has built-in electrical controls, LAN, telephone cabling, and CCTVs, the statement added.The Mobile Lab will be helpful in carrying out diagnosis of COVID-19 and also virus culturing for drug screening, convalescent plasma derived therapy, comprehensive immune profiling of COVID-19 patients towards vaccine development and early clinical trials specific to Indian population. The lab can screen 1,000-2,000 samples per day and can be positioned anywhere in the country as per requirement, the statement added.Speaking on this occasion, the Union defence minister said the government has taken several timely decisions because of which the spread of COVID-19 in the country is far less in comparison to many other countries.Singh also appreciated the setting up of this Biosafety Level 2 and Level 3 lab in a record time of 15 days though it usually takes about six months to set up such a lab. He said the testing facility can process more than 1,000 samples in a day and will enhance the country's capabilities in fighting COVID-19. <ul><li>The <keyword id="152819" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Defence-Research-and-Development-Organisation">Defence Research and Development Organisation</keyword> (<keyword id="6355142" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="DRDO">DRDO</keyword>) will no longer require ‘performance security’ for any new development contracts. </li><li>The move will further remove the red tape between the industry and the government and hopefully incentivise participation, according to the Ministry of Defence (MoD).</li><li>However, a Performance cum Warranty Bond will still be required from successful development partners to cover DRDO’s interest during the warranty period.</li></ul>India’s Defence Minister <keyword id="6355121" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rajnath-Singh">Rajnath Singh</keyword> approved Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) waiving the requirement of ‘performance security’ for development contracts under its helm as a move to incentivise the private sector’s participation. The same will also be true for the Indian Navy’s Advanced Vessel Project (<a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/defence/russia-offers-to-jointly-design-build-submarines/articleshow/64877908.cms?from=mdr">ATVP</a>) to design and construct a submarine with Russia. The new submarines will be customised to Indian systems, including the Brahmos missile. “This provision will be applicable to all RFPs (requests for procurement) issues in respect of develo contracts after the date of issue of this amendment that is 23 September 2020,” said the Ministry of Defence (<a href="https://pib.gov.in/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=1658680">MoD</a>) in a statement. All existing development contracts, where the RFP has already been issued, will continue to be regulated as per the provisions outlined in the contract. What is performance security? Performance security is one of the requirements for obtaining a Letter of Credit (LC) from the bank — an undertaking given by it on behalf of the buyer to pay the seller. It is one of the banking instruments to facilitate foreign payments, according to the DRDO’s <a href="https://www.drdo.gov.in/sites/default/files/procurement-manuals-document/procurement-manual-2016.pdf">procurement manual.</a> What is a development contract? "Developmental contract is concluded for the development of an item as per given design and specifications by DRDO for producing a specified quantity by the selected development partner," outlines DRDO's manual. These contracts may subsequently lead to production contracts with unit production cost worked out based on successful completion of the contract. Should that be the case, DRDO will then require a Performance cum Warranty Bond. In issuing this, the seller is promising performance of the contract till the warranty period. It usually pegged at 5% to 10% of the total contract value. For Indian partners, the Performance cum Warranty Bond may be accepted in the form of a bank draft, fixed deposit receipt, banker’s cheque or a bank guarantee. For foreign bidders, it may be accepted in the form of a bank guarantee or 'stand-by' LC. Chairman DRDO Satheesh Reddy stated that it is another important milestone to support Industry. <ul><li>The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore have developed a new bomb detection device called Raider-X. </li><li>It can detect up to 20 <keyword id="1645562" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="homemade-explosives">homemade explosives</keyword> from up to two meters away. </li><li>Raider-X’s data library can be updated to accommodate the detection of different explosives in their pure and contaminated forms. </li></ul>A new explosives detection device was unveiled at the National Workshop on Explosive Detection 2020 in Pune. Dubbed Raider-X, it can detect up to 20 explosives from a stand-off distance of two meters. Chairman of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (<a href="https://pib.gov.in/PressReleseDetailm.aspx?PRID=1604799">DRDO</a>) Satheesh Reddy said that such devices were incremental to thwarting the threat from homemade explosives.  "There is no universal solution in the field of explosive detection as it is constantly evolving. There is a need for a synergetic approach towards developing the latest explosive detectors by bringing scientific institutes, academia, security agencies, armed forces and police on one platform," said Reddy. Raider-X was developed by the High Energy Material Research Laboratory (HEMRL) — an arm of the DRDO — in Pune and the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. Raider-X — Features and capabilities The default Raidex-X can detect explosives from a distance of 2 meters. However, according to the director of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/cities/easily-available-home-made-explosives-major-threat-drdo-chairman/story-paNxUUGO9w54d0QeCJfIAL.html">Shiva Umapathy</a>, the stand-off distance can be increased. The customisation could result in an increase in the size and weight of the kit.  The Raider-X can also discern bulk explosives even if they have been concealed. Since the nature of homemade explosives can vary and change over time, law enforcement agencies have the option to update the detector’s data library. The data library will allow the device to detect multiple explosives, in their pure form as well as with contaminants. "The device has various applications including narcotics, for local police, for customs and other detection agencies who need to detect various elements which may be explosive or non-explosive in nature," said Umapathy. The mission was carried out by DRDO. The satellite used during the test was the one present in India’s lower orbit. What are anti-satellites weapons Anti-satellites are space weapons designed to incapacitate or destroy satellites for strategic military purposes. There are only four countries in the world with this capability — the US, China, Russia and now India. These weapons can allow a country to attack enemy satellite by blinding them or disrupting their communication. They also provide a technical base for intercepting ballistic missiles. They are also helpful in bringing down spy satellites. India can now hit satellites at long ranges with a few centimeters accuracy, said Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) chairman G Satheesh Reddy told news agency ANI. However, India has not directed the test against any country. The Ministry said the test was done in the lower atmosphere to ensure that there were no space debris. "Whatever debris that is generated will decay and fall back onto the earth within weeks."
