This was after TCS iON, the strategic arm of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) for education, announced free access to its platform. Digital Glassroom, designed exclusively for schools and colleges, aims to furnish the educators with interactive tools and methods like polls, debates, quiz and surveys to share lessons, videos, worksheets and more real-time. “This is focussed on schools and higher education institutions. We have mimicked every activity that happens within a classroom — assignments, hands-on activities and more,” Venguswamy Ramaswamy, global head, TCS iON told Business Insider in an exclusive interview. All the educational institutions have been asked to shut down and suspend classes till March 31, as a precautionary measure. “These are unprecedented times. With schools and colleges shut down across the country, we want to empower these institutions and help them switch to a virtual mode, so students’ learning journeys can continue uninterrupted on our platform. I do hope large numbers of public and private institutions will take this opportunity to use technology to overcome the disruption,” he added. In addition, the platform also provides an embedded live classroom for a better learner experience. However, it is still in a grey area when it comes to regulations on assessment. “As far as certification and other requirements are concerned, you still need an assessment. Today, we provide an assessment capability where one can do a remote programme to ensure it's a free assessment. But we still have to wait how the regulators are going to look into it and whether they will agree to take this as the final assessment. Will they ask for a physical assessment later — that is yet to unfold,” he said. Ramaswamy also added that the move can also revolutionize distance learning. This is in line with the initiatives proposed by the United Nations as well, which proposed solutions for inclusive distance learning programmes. “While temporary school closures as a result of health and other crises are not new unfortunately, the global scale and speed of the current educational disruption is unparalleled and, if prolonged, could threaten the right to education. ICAI, ICSI and Sastra University are first three educational institutes to collaborate with TCS iON’s ‘digital glassroom’

Indian IT giant Tata Consultancy Services (<keyword id="6357150" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="TCS">TCS</keyword>) has partnered with the Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology &amp; Research Academy (<keyword id="413075" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sastra-University">SASTRA University</keyword>, Tamil Nadu) to train university teachers about digital-based teaching methods. 
 
The program would train more than 2,000 school teachers from various educational institutes across tier 2 and tier 3 cities in Tamil Nadu. 
 
"Technology is rapidly transforming the education sector with digital technologies increasingly becoming an integral part of the students' daily lifestyle. By announcing this initiative for teachers in Tamil Nadu on the special occasion of Teacher's Day, TCS believes that empowering the teachers through this program on digital learning pedagogies will help enhance the quality of education provided across Tamil Nadu," said TCS executive VP Ajoyendra Mukherjee. 
 
Along with space for digital teaching methods, the training centre would also house a language lab, digital assessment solutions, lecture capture solutions, studio to develop learning material, facilities to develop simple applications for a teaching-learning ecosystem and other support facilities for the training programmes, says an official release. 
 
Each programme would train 45 teachers over a period of six days.

Though, no Indian institute has yet broken into the top 200, IISc holds a rank in the 201-250 band. The last time around it was in the band of 251-300. 	 "The government's focus on improving India's standing in global rankings - and even the introduction of the India-specific rankings - has started to yield results. Institutes ranked in the 801+ bandare Acharya Nagarjuna University, Amity University, Amrita University, <keyword id="6386394" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Andhra-University">Andhra University</keyword>, Cochin University of Science and Technology, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Manipal University, Osmania University, SASTRA University, Sathyabama University, SRM University and Vellore Institute of Technology. 
	 
	 Amrita University and Andhra University slipped down to the 801+ group. However, on the brighter side NIT Rourkela, Sri Venkateswara University, TIFR and Tezpur University made their way in the top 800 list. 
	 “This year's expanded list is a testimony to how competitive global <keyword id="6375224" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="higher-education">higher education</keyword> has become. The 980 universities come from 79 different countries,” <keyword id="3660284" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="batty">Batty</keyword> told ET. 
	 US for the first time in 12 years lost the first rank in the list with <keyword id="150557" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="University-of-Oxford">University of Oxford</keyword> becoming the world's top university. Others in the top five include California Institute of Technology, <keyword id="101399" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Stanford-University">Stanford University</keyword>, University of Cambridge and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

enter the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, IISc Bangalore
ranked highest

<keyword id="3157934" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="National-Assessment-Accreditation-Council">National Assessment &amp; Accreditation Council</keyword> (<keyword id="6361410" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="NAAC">NAAC</keyword>), the autonomous body established by <keyword id="56459" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="University-Grants-Commission">University Grants Commission</keyword> (<keyword id="44171" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="UGC">UGC</keyword>) has given a near-green signal to all 38 deemed universities which were blacklisted in 2009 because they had failed to meet a range of quality parameters required. 
 
In a report submitted last month to the Supreme Court, 17 out of these 38 deemed universities were placed in Category A, while one - Nehru Gram Bharti University in Allahabad – was placed in Category C. 
 
This has come almost a year after the UGC report in which it gave a clean chit to all except seven of these deemed universities, which were blacklisted six years ago. Even these seven universities were placed in categories A or B by NAAC. 
 
The universities which were awarded category A rating are Bharath University (Chennai), Maharishi Markandeshwar University (Ambala), and Manav Rachna International University (Faridabad). Meanwhile, Ponnaiyah Ramajayam Institute of Science and Technology (PRIST) University (Thanjavur); Vinayaka Missions University (Salem), Academy of Maritime Education and Training (Chennai), and Institute of Advanced Studies in Education (Sardarshahar), got a Category B rating. 
 
A, B and C categories refer to institutions that are considered very good, good and satisfactory, respectively, and are accredited, however, grade D is an 'unsatisfactory' rating and these universities are not accredited. 
 
This latest review means that the deemed universities which were been declared severely quality deficient in 2009 by a committee headed by PN Tandon can be considered to be reprieved. 
 
"With the Supreme Court accepting NAAC's new gradation, the human resource development ministry should instruct UGC to take all policy decisions based on NAAC accreditation and not the Tandon classification," Dr S Vaidhyasubramaniam, dean of SASTRA University in Thanjavur, told ET.

The 12-month program will cater to the younger generation and help them fetch a job in the IT sector. “With this program, HCL aims to hire the best talent and enable them to achieve financial independence at the start of their career. Students also earn a degree from leading universities that HCL has partnered with as part of this program,” said Sanjay Gupta, Executive Vice President, HCL Technologies &amp; Program Director – HCL New Vistas. After-school Students who end their education right after Std XII have few opportunities to seek employment. Only limited government jobs are available to such dropouts, with the exception of a few-corporate driven programs that induct them into auto and manufacturing sectors. HCL’s program however will offer IT engineering jobs to the high school graduates — who clear the 12th grade — after grooming them in software tools, life skills and software testing. This initiative is a part of the government’s Skill India program. The students who undergo their training process will be awarded a technical degree from BITS Pilani and SASTRA University. The blended training program will include on-the-job training and classroom training, with an early stipend of ₹10,000 every month. The company initiated the program in 2017, and has enrolled 500 students. Highschool passouts will be now groomed for IT jobs

By Vishwam Sankaran New Delhi, May 7 () An emerging technique that uses lab-grown tiny human organs to study viral diseases can accelerate research on the novel coronavirus, and pave the way for new COVID-19 therapies, leading scientists say. "Organoids, are lab-grown organs, which closely resemble human tissues that are relevant for disease," Josef Penninger, Director, Life Science Institute at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Canada, told . In these human organ-like structures, Penninger said, scientists are beginning to perform more experiments to explore how the SARS-CoV-2 virus replicates in hosts, or even test vaccines and drugs against COVID-19. Cultured from undifferentiated cells in the human body called stem cells, he said, these tiny organs contain cells which are also present in a "real" human organ. For instance, organoids of blood vessels are perfect mini versions of the vascular tissue, made up of an empty cavity, cells that stabilise it, and a membrane wrapped around and keeping it all together, Penninger explained. Similarly, the scientist said, kidney organoids have multiple cell types found in a normal kidney, including those expressing the ACE2 receptor which acts as an entry gate for SARS-CoV-2. According to Penninger, research using organoids can open new doors for studying COVID-19 symptoms. The tiny organs have previously helped scientists understand how the Zika virus, an emerging mosquito-borne pathogen, causes smaller head size, and intellectual disability in developing newborns. Infection of brain organoid models with Zika virus revealed which cells were affected, and resulting neurological disorders, noted a study published last year in the journal Viruses. But even now, preliminary experiments on viral infection use only mouse models or lab-grown animal or human tissues, which do not possess the complexity seen in human organs, Penninger said. "For studying infectious diseases, the commonly used lab models are vero cell lines which are derived from monkey kidneys, and colon cancer cell lines, but these do not fully capture what happens in humans," Shuibing Chen, stem cell biologist from Cornell University in the US, told . While scientists also study SARS-CoV-2 infection in mice, Chen said the rodents do not have the same human version of ACE2 -- the SARS-CoV-2 'gateway' receptor. Organoids can help overcome these limitations, she said, adding that they can change how scientists understand and test potential COVID-19 therapeutics. For instance, Penninger and his colleagues recently found that a trial drug could block early stages of COVID-19 in a study involving blood vessel and kidney organoids. Another study, published in the pre-print server bioRxiv, screened 1,280 drugs already approved by the US Food and Drug Administration against novel coronavirus infection of the intestines. The researchers, who studied these drugs on large intestine organoids, said there is an urgent need to create standard models of these tiny organs to study COVID-19. "In colon, we have more than 10 different cell types like nutrient absorbing cells, and cells which produce hormones," Chen explained. Since using just one human cell line over-simplifies studies, she said there is a growing number of COVID-19 research using organoids to "capture the complexity of infection". Citing an example, Chen mentioned a study published in the journal Science, which showed how SARS-CoV-2 infects intestinal cells. Joep Beumer, co-author of this study from Hubrecht Institute in the Netherlands, told that organoid experiments revealed which cells in the outer layer of the intestine are infected by the virus, likely contributing to gut-related COVID-19 symptoms like diarrhea. The scientists led by Hans Clevers had previously developed a new method to grow snake venom gland cells as organoids. The first pathogen-organoid cultures were done only a few years ago, and since then these studies have been increasing, with COVID-19 likely accelerating this further, Beumer said. Penninger too believes that several COVID-19 puzzles -- such as how the virus lives inside cells, and how it can be blocked from entering them -- can be pieced together via organoid studies. He said tricking the virus, and preventing it from finding the ACE2 entry gate, is "probably the most rationale therapy possible for COVID-19." "Many groups in the world have followed our example, and are using or developing organoids for COVID-19 studies, also in tissues like the heart, and especially the lung," Penninger added. Some scientists also caution that organoids may not capture the whole reality of diseases. "Organoids are certainly better than cell culture, but they are missing the immune system and the endocrine system," Saisubramanian N, Professor of microbiology at SASTRA School of Chemical &amp; Biotechnology in Tamil Nadu, told . In order to overcome this limitation, special versions of the tiny organs in which the virus, organoids, and immune cells are co-cultured can be used, Beumer noted. Commenting on the affordability of organoid studies in developing countries, Penninger said, "this is still relatively expansive work, but we work on making it much cheaper, and at numbers that allow testing of new drugs and combinations in thousands of experiments." Beumer said growing these mini organs requires equipment like culture hoods and 37 degree Celsius incubators, along with the supply of patient biopsies as a source for the organoid culture.
